  • Grab this last week from officeworks. Seems like better value imo https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/176574

Works great so far only downside it doesn't connect direct to PC so it's painful uploading to the drive via Ethernet.

    • +1

i would have thought ethernet would be faster than usb?

      • USB 3.0 is faster (5 gigabit in theory, but in real life, you'll be luck to get half of that). Gigabit ethernet is at most 1 gigabit, but again in theory, except you can generally get close to it).

WD My Cloud has impressive sequential read / write for a NAS in the price range (hard drives included) [92MB read, 71MB write - network is dedicated for the test; no other traffic]. If you put large files on My Cloud, then you should be happy with the performance. USB3 will still be around 10-20MB faster. Putting lots of smaller files, the performance drops quite a lot. Under that condition, USB3 will have more significant advantage.

If you don't have gigabit ethernet, or copy files to it using wifi (even if you use wireless N), the performance will be pretty shocking, but that's a network issue.

        • writing to NAS from HTPC using wireless 5GHZ ac, I consistently get 35MB/s. and thats with 3 brick walls and 12m separation.

If i was to move the HTPC right close to the router (NAS is ethernet connected to router) it'd be even better I assume.

So for the majority of users this might be an acceptable speed and will suit them 99% of the time. suits me always.

          YMMV

  • Its not unusual these days for NAS devices to not have PC connectivity via USB. I see many people buying special USB to USB plugs to plug into the USB port on the NAS to get them connected, these ports are only for the printer or an external drive etc.
They often have a spac attack when they find out they can only connect via Ethernet, for most hopefully Gig, some 10/100
    Patience is a virtue !

    • Are there any that you know of that have both? I'd like one that I can access via network at 1Gbps (100Mbit would do but would prefer gigabit) as well as having it accessible via USB at the same time (read only).

      • You don't want those ones. Reasons are: (1) Most decent NAS are UNIX/Linux based. They would normally use ext3/ext4 partitions (instead of NTFS). You may find ones which support NTFS, but they are risky (unless they are Windows based - hardly any). The reason is that NTFS is Microsoft proprietary. UNIX camp managed to reverse engineer it, but the write support is not always safe. (2) Decent NAS are really designed for network, it won't allow dual access (LAN and USB3 to it at the same time).

  • http://www.qnap.com/static/products/comparison/All_NAS.php is a good coomparison tool for some high end Qnap products, you can just google for other similar products, or compare the lower end HS-251 product to find similar units. and No i dont work for them

  • Good deal. Looks like cheapest on staticice is 349, not including postage:
