Arguably this is worth the $10 extra for 4 DIMM slots.

Also no USB C front port on the MSI mobo.

This one has much worse capability on CPU power, using the same VRM as the infamous Gigabyte B650M Gaming WiFi. Don't get fool around by the naming.

People buying at this price range won't run 4 DIMMs anyway. It is a rumour about compatibility issues about 2 DIMMs mobo and Zen 6 though.

Don't even consider 4 DIMMs for DDR5 unless above 96GB RAM is needed

Ten dollars more and you get a board with substantially more features: https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/motherboards/amd-socket-…

This one has much worse capability on CPU power. 120W vs 165W

      • Perfectly fine for a 9800x3d and below.

        • +2

It's not perfectly fine if planning to run a CPU just on the power limit of the mobo

      • Appreciate the info. What are the power stages on the VRM of this MSI board? I bought one a couple of days ago, but cant seem to find the details on that.

        • +3

          6+2+1
          MOS: SM4337+SM4503
          PWM: RT3678BE

Larger number of power stages does not always mean better but generally better. The actual capability depends on multiple factors including quality of MOS/PCB/heatsink/layout.

  • what b650/m/mini motherboard is budget but can be upgraded to the highest 9000 series cpu and handle it without throttling at 100% workload etc (i won't be overclocking). for under $240. i'm building our office some pc's using the ryzen 7 7700

MSI B650M Gaming PLUS WiFi, used to be $199 daily but now have to wait promotion to get that price. ASUS B650M-E would also be capable but with slightly higher price, worth considering if previous one is not on $199

      • awesome thanks Meteor ^^)

Want about MSI pro b650m-a ,seems to be same PCB but without rear USB C, integrated IO shield and external antenna and gamer aesthetic. $30 less

        • MSI B650M-A uses slightly worse VRM and heatsink than Gaming Plus, so has less power limit and might not be able to run R9 under 100% load

7700 is a value king. Especially at the lower power consumption compared to 7700X.

  • What about the VRM on the MSI B650M Gaming Plus WIFI? That is my go to for 7800X3D/9800X3D builds now.

    • Absolutely fine for 9800X3D, could run 9950X

  • How does this compare to something like this from umart, albeit ATX? For a 7700

    • +2

B840 is actually A620, BIOS functions and supports are much worse than B850/B650, like RAM compatibility, overclocking. Don't buy any B840.

  • Are msi still good for motherboards like they were in AM4?

  • I recommend factoring in shipping costs if your going with other motherboards. I found the cheapest board with the features I wanted on it. But when adding shipping, it's almost same cost as more expensive board, that for $10/$20 more I may swell pay for the other board. So yeah unless your doing click and collect. Factoring in the shipping costs means the cheapest board is not always the best bang for your buck *unless it's free shipping hehe. I wanted to go with the MSI b650a wifi originally for $188 at msy , but inc shipping costs $20-30 more, so mayswell look at options around $210-$230. So then I'm choosing between MSI MAG B650M GAMING PLUS WIFI and b650e tuf wifi. And because I see a ton of people talking about issues with the msi on the net, I go with the tuf. Because I'm building 8x work computers and don't plan to game, and need to build something reliable that won't break down etc that can also handle future CPU upgrades, that do not require over clocking etc. heard boot times can be slow certain brand motherboards but that doesn't bother me. I signed up for centecom premium for $50, so I get further $10 off the tuff etc ended up getting a board for around $209 inc shipping I think. Only reason centecom premium is worth it for me is because I'm building 8 computer. I like the tuff because it will hopefully last longer than another board and be more reliable.
