Arguably this is worth the $10 extra for 4 DIMM slots.

    • +1

Also no USB C front port on the MSI mobo.

    • +2

This one has much worse capability on CPU power, using the same VRM as the infamous Gigabyte B650M Gaming WiFi. Don't get fool around by the naming.

People buying at this price range won't run 4 DIMMs anyway. It is a rumour about compatibility issues about 2 DIMMs mobo and Zen 6 though.

Don't even consider 4 DIMMs for DDR5 unless above 96GB RAM is needed

      • +1

Im running 4 Dimms for DDR5, but I wouldnt recommend in almost all cases. Plus I have read (not 100% sure the source) that two dim mobos may be more stable at aggressive timings.

        • +1

Correct, 2 DIMM slots is actually a better feature for gamers than 4 DIMM.

          • @Meteor Anarcom: That said, not if you like to have 200 chrome tabs open

            • @Franc-T: Even 2 DIMMs can run 128GB RAM DDR5, could run many more than 200 tabs

              • @Meteor Anarcom: Ok, but you cant have four sticks of corsair dominator with the nice little squares.

  • +2

Ten dollars more and you get a board with substantially more features: https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/motherboards/amd-socket-…

    • +3

This one has much worse capability on CPU power. 120W vs 165W

      • Perfectly fine for a 9800x3d and below.

        • +2

It's not perfectly fine if planning to run a CPU just on the power limit of the mobo

      • Appreciate the info. What are the power stages on the VRM of this MSI board? I bought one a couple of days ago, but cant seem to find the details on that.

        • +3

          6+2+1
          MOS: SM4337+SM4503
          PWM: RT3678BE

Larger number of power stages does not always mean better but generally better. The actual capability depends on multiple factors including quality of MOS/PCB/heatsink/layout.

  • what b650/m/mini motherboard is budget but can be upgraded to the highest 9000 series cpu and handle it without throttling at 100% workload etc (i won't be overclocking). for under $240. i'm building our office some pc's using the ryzen 7 7700

    • +3

MSI B650M Gaming PLUS WiFi, used to be $199 daily but now have to wait promotion to get that price. ASUS B650M-E would also be capable but with slightly higher price, worth considering if previous one is not on $199

      • +1

        awesome thanks Meteor ^^)

      • +1

Want about MSI pro b650m-a ,seems to be same PCB but without rear USB C, integrated IO shield and external antenna and gamer aesthetic. $30 less

        • +1

MSI B650M-A uses slightly worse VRM and heatsink than Gaming Plus, so has less power limit and might not be able to run R9 under 100% load

    • +1

7700 is a value king. Especially at the lower power consumption compared to 7700X.

  • +1

What about the VRM on the MSI B650M Gaming Plus WIFI? That is my go to for 7800X3D/9800X3D builds now.

    • +1

Absolutely fine for 9800X3D, could run 9950X

  • How does this compare to something like this from umart, albeit ATX? For a 7700

    • +2

B840 is actually A620, BIOS functions and supports are much worse than B850/B650, like RAM compatibility, overclocking. Don't buy any B840.

  • Are msi still good for motherboards like they were in AM4?

    • My last two motherboards have been MSI and I've been extremely happy with them.

  • +1

I recommend factoring in shipping costs if your going with other motherboards. I found the cheapest board with the features I wanted on it. But when adding shipping, it's almost same cost as more expensive board, that for $10/$20 more I may swell pay for the other board. So yeah unless your doing click and collect. Factoring in the shipping costs means the cheapest board is not always the best bang for your buck *unless it's free shipping hehe. I wanted to go with the MSI b650a wifi originally for $188 at msy , but inc shipping costs $20-30 more, so mayswell look at options around $210-$230. So then I'm choosing between MSI MAG B650M GAMING PLUS WIFI and b650e tuf wifi. And because I see a ton of people talking about issues with the msi on the net, I go with the tuf. Because I'm building 8x work computers and don't plan to game, and need to build something reliable that won't break down etc that can also handle future CPU upgrades, that do not require over clocking etc. heard boot times can be slow certain brand motherboards but that doesn't bother me. I signed up for centecom premium for $50, so I get further $10 off the tuff etc ended up getting a board for around $209 inc shipping I think. Only reason centecom premium is worth it for me is because I'm building 8 computer. I like the tuff because it will hopefully last longer than another board and be more reliable.

    • *i was talking about the ASUS TUF Gaming B650M-E Wi-Fi, not the b650e wifi (which is worth around $300)

  • im making 8x office computers.. im wondering, can anyone tell me if this is a reliable safe power supply? im not putting in any graphics card, and need something reliable for around $85… I cant find this on the psu tier list so idk if it can be trusted or not….

    Toughpower 550W Gold (Modular)
    PS-TPD-0550MPCG

    can find it on amazon.au

    • +1

I suggest you contact your local retailers for a bulk buy. They could offer some discount on this I think. Low-end PSUs in AU are all overpriced

      https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1akCHL7Vhzk_EhrpIGkz8…

Thats 2025 tier list, looks like its on there (no model number as there are variants)…..and its shite - At the cheap end of town, I wouldnt recommend anything listed on amazon for that price honestly (I looked at every one lol as I was curious - I wouldnt touch anything listed under $120 ish on Amzon - cheap psus are often poorer quality here is a reason they are that cheap, last thing you want is fried (or worse) and/or unreliable computers due to psu

Looked at a few sites, and the best I could find of an actual good quality PSU was:

Phanteks PH-P550GF 550W Gold Power Supply for $99

My corsair Cs850m, last 4 years and cooked.

My new 4090 build, spent up on 1200w corsair shift.. Didn't make it a year. 2 HR sessions on cod twice a week..

        • Not sure what you are getting at with your comment - but those powersupplies are good ones. Also the 1200W shift def would still be in warranty, I have one in my main gaming rig at the moment.

Get a UPS, I am going to wager the dirty power coming into the premises or some other electricial issue inside the house, given its happend twice on pretty reliable PSU's.

      • nice find! but is this on the teir list? or has it ever been fully tested?

        • Couldnt find it on the tier list, but its based on seasonic gold and they are pretty decent. All Phanateks on the tier list are decent as well.

Personally I would feel comfortable having one in the above system, though i typically spend double that for extra capability down the track as I do swap in additional stuff over time on my rigs.

          • @Franc-T: what do you think about Silverstone DA750R-GMA 750 W 80+ Gold ? i got one because i thought it might be good but im not sure.. its its not so good i will get refund and buy the phanteks one

            • +1

@JURBA: Im not a power supply guru, I just do my reasearch before buying (after learning better in the old days when I always got the cheapest). Anyway that PSU isnt directly in the tier list but judging by the other Silverstone DA's it should be decent. The tier list isnt a bible, but its the best source out there for a roundup of a lot of PSU's when looking.

You can find reviews online from generally reliable sources, they all seem to think its fine so you good to go.
