JB Hi-Fi - Dell Venue 7 3000 Quad Core 3G Tablet + Phone Intel Baytrail 3735G $116 in Store Only

70

It's not a simple tablet + 3G. It's a real 6.9" Quad Core android phone!

Bought this from JB HIFI Mount Druitt Sydney (Last one in this store) today.

The price on their online store is $148. But there's a red price tag in store at $116.00. When service staff did this transaction, he uses the reason 'Price match Harvey Norman" in their system to reduce price from $148 to $116. So guess this maybe a nationwide deal both in JB and HV although I didn't find this product on HV online store after came back.

For this tablet, 1GB ram is the disadvantage. But thinking it's not only a tablet but also an Intel Quad core 1.8GHz Android phone. So it should be a good deal especially for those who love a phone with huge screen.

Just did finish setting and use it to make phone calls, no any difference to a normal android phone, all functions are same. Just bigger.

Ps. met problems below, will much appreciate it if someone knows how to solve it
1. There's no 'Australia' in country settings
2. After I did check and download 'system update', it fell in loop "please reboot to apply update' then 'Error' in rebooting and reboot again to older system. But after the tablet restarted, it would automatically download update again, then ask "reboot" again….Over and over, never stop. So had to choose 'reboot later' to remove notice from top bar. But whenever you do restart tablet, this would come back again.

    6.95 inch 1024x600 TN
    ehhhh…

I guess if you think of it as a tablet that can supply it's own data in an emergency but not for me.

  • Man i hate people calling 7inch tablets with 3g a phone.

    • -1

      It's a giant Phablet?

      • -3

        No it's simply a tablet.
A Samsung galaxy note 4 is a phablet which the galaxy s5 is a phone.

going by your logic you would call my galaxy note 10.1" with 3g a phone instead of what it is a tablet.

        • +3

I would regard your 10.1" as enormously huge and you can call it whatever you like.

@Junk Collection: never mind mate admins fixed the title.
          Have a good day.

Heard of a earset or a bluetooth headset

  • I am confused is it phablet Tablet+Phone or Just a Tablet wifi+3g.

      It's a tablet with 3g
no where do dell call it a phone it's listed under tablets.

        "Touch, type and talk
Get more versatility and value from our most affordable 7" Android tablet with the latest wireless features, Intel processors and 3G voice calling."

This is from their website you provided the link again confusing voice calling is Skype type calling or actual phone calling. OP clearly states that he had made phone calls using this device though.

        • -4

          Thankyou,you just proved my point.
they call it a android tablet NOT a phone.

        • @holden93: To be fair, they call it a tablet with the connectivity of a phone:

"A micro SIM card adds 3G voice calling capability, so you can make phone calls on the go from one device. Get more versatility with the portable convenience of a tablet and the connectivity of a phone in the Dell Venue 7 3000 Series."

The photo of the guy using the seven inch tablet as a phone is a classic. Also in the quickstart guide, the calling out seems straightforward (ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_tab_mob/esupr…)

          "Making a call
          1. Tap the Phone icon on the home screen.
          2. Tap the dialpad icon.
          3. Enter the phone number and then tap the phone icon to
          dial the number.
NOTE: You need to activate your network service before making
          a call."

        • @twocsies: And the first picture in their features list is a guy with it up to his ear using it as a phone. Holden needs to chill out.

        • -5

@Phreakuency: doesnt make it a phone. Just showing that it can be used as one if needed.

try cleaning delvik cache and system cache and it may help… back up all your data if you have any before doing…

  • Whats app doesnt install on tablets any more.
Use it with an appropriate bluetooth headset.

  • I had this tablet for 5 minutes, put it back in the box and sent it back to Dell. The screen is really bad!

I had this ordered when Dell first put it on the AU website. It did not have display resolution listed at the time, so I based my purchase off the specs of the US version of the Venue 7 which had the display listed as 1280 x 800. Once I had it in hand I looked at the display and knew straight away it wasn't 1280 x 800. I checked back on Dell Australia and noticed the 1024 x 600 spec now listed, went straight back to Dell.

    • Please be known, the US version is a dual core CPU but not Quad core. It's not comparable. And also the US version has no 3G at all.

      • Cores don't mean speed, smooth or stable. Its the integration and optimisation of the firmware, software and hardware. A dual core with a better optimised android will be better than a quadcore in many circumstances

        • -1

To make a pc faster, you can add ram, change to SSD, change video card, use different system, etc. But CPU is the heart, the speed of the quad core atom is 10 to 7 to the dual core used in these 2 devices when all others are same. That's almost 50% faster, and even more on multitasking. What's you think dell used to compensate it for the same generation device? I can't see any from product specification.

        • @tramperleo:

Its only beneficial if there's software written to take advantage of the extra cores. Majority of Apps aren't optimized for use of those extra cores, hence why tablets like the iPad and Nexus 9 have focused on having 2 fast cores rather than 4 slower cores. My Tab s has 8 core processor for instance, yet its no where near as fast as my tri-core Air 2.

        • @tramperleo: You need to do more researching. That's if ALL cores are in use on the exact same software. Yes, you would be correct. Are they, no?

      • US and AU versions are different especially in the processor and screen size/type.

        AU: quad core 1.83ghz, 3g, 8gb eMMC, 1280x600 TN, wireless N etc
US: Dual core 1.6ghz, no 3g, 16gb eMMC, 1280x800 IPS HD, wireless AC etc

  • Whatever you call it, a tablet? a phone? It's just a name. What's I said here, it's not just the tradition tablet + 3G. With that device, you can not make real phone call and your interface is a tablet.
But this device is the same as an android phone in any aspect. Exactly the same interface as a mobile phone and functional and operational the same as a mobile phone.

Can not find the frequency parameters
But tested with sims from all major carriers. Make phone call without problem with all sims.
    Optus: 3G
    Vodafone: 3G
    Aldi(Telstra dealer): 2G

So it seems the device is not compatible with Telstra 3G network, 2G only with telstra and dealer's sim

Attention here, no headset needed for phone call and not use the loud tablet speaker.

WHEN YOU MAKE PHONE CALL, THERE's ANOTHER SPEAKER FOR PHONE CALL ONLY JUST AS THE NORMAL MOBILE PHONE
Also the Mic is at the right position for calling, perfect!

A tv can be connected to a computer tower to use as a monitor but it is still technicly a tv screen not a pc monitor.

  • @tramperleo~

I'd go back to jb & ask them to transfer another phone/tab from a different shop. Yours appears defective.

Or, ring Dell AU directly & let them talk you through the diagnostics & then it's free ship back for warranty service.

I personally don't think 6.95 is "too large" for a phone. I LOVE my Sony T2 & it's 6". I love the large screen & I carry it in-hand like a small purse anyway (the cover is a billfold/CC wallet). I've never put a mobile into my pocket.

    Cheers!

  • hmm…intel quad core…if only someone can convert this over to run windows os…

  • Can you comment the battery life?

    • 4100mAh battery. But still seems not lasting long. Light use, just for setting, testing phone calls, totally around 2-3 hours with screen on, plus restart/reboot around 30 times and standby. Now 12 hours, only 40% left.

But not as my Toshiba Encore 8, the back cover of this Dell is very easy to open-similar to a normal phone, and it's also very easy to change battery. Found quality branded cameron sino replace battery for this device is below AUD30.00 on eBay with free shipping.

  • Can you send text messages on this thing or is it just for phone calls?

    • +2

It's in fact a real phone. As I said, from any aspect, shape, button position, user interface, function, operation, etc. It's exactly a phone. No any difference to the android phone on yuor hand. So for msg, of course, same as yuor phone

      • thanks mate! the nonsense some of the posters in here were carrying on with had me confused.
