good price for a proper windows tablet that is fast enough to do stuff.

That Youtuber is using a jaw droppingly cheap tablet — $59 USD. I wonder if they even profit selling that.

      http://www.microcenter.com/product/439773/TW70CA17_Tablet_-_…

      • I'd buy something that cheap!
How would this tab go though with 1GB ram on Win8.1?
Prefer a 9-10" with 8.1 on 2GB ram, but not found a good deal yet.
        Have to consider this…

        • To get the cheap/free Windows licence and ship with “Windows 8.1 with Bing” the device must have 1GB RAM only.

        • +1

          @Shonky:
strange as my chuwi VI8 has 2gb of ram and it has windows 8.1 with Bing

        • +1

@Shonky: It is not the RAM size, it has something to do with price. It needs to be under $200 USD I think.

        • +3

The Pipo X7 has 2GB RAM, and Windows 8.1 with Bing.

          @aacheney:
Not to go off topic, but any feedback on this one. Was very tempted, just wasn't sure I wanted Win8.1 over android. Tried steam game streaming?

        • @Wimma:

I have not tried any steam game streaming I am happy with the Chuwi is does everything I want/need I did upgrade it to a windows 8 pro and I some times use it for remote desktop.

Any game you want me to test, I tried ace of spades (http://store.steampowered.com/app/224540/) it loaded but played up once I used the touch screen. I am happy to get the otg cable and try with a keyboard and mouse

        • @aacheney:
can you explain what remote desktop functionality native in windows pro you use?

          i normally use teamviewer

what does pro offer that teamviewer doesnt? is it faster?

        • +1

          @aacheney:

Thanks. Just wondering if it could do the steam in home streaming? (if you had a main PC setup for it)
Wouldn't expect awesome performance over wifi, but I love my TBS games, which should be playable if it worked ok.
Still on the fence with Win8 v Android though - I have so many apps to install!!

        • +1

          @furythree:
I am using RDP the default windows one. I dont think you get the function with windows 8 with bing.
          @Wimma:
Yes it does work, load as it is still in beta there are a few problems and I have tested batman arkham origins and arkham city. they load but I have not tested game play

Where did this myth about free Windows only being available for 1GB RAM machines come from? And the <US$200 idea is a new one for me.
The only requirement is the screen must be less than 9".

        • @Shonky:
I believe the restriction is on the Screen size of < 8" or under $120 USD..

          http://www.pcworld.com/article/2158665/microsoft-announces-w…

Not the RAM size. The 32bit ones floating around support up to 4GB as per any Windows.

        • @Shonky:

So you can transfer licence to a desktop? Can you tell us more?

        • @McFly: That's partially correct, however you can buy devices with Win 8.1 with Bing that don't have screens… One example is the Zotac ZBox PI320:
          http://www.zotac.com/products/mini-pcs/zbox-p-series/product…

I can't remember where I read it but Zotac commented on the above box stating Win 8.1 with Bing was for devices that cost less than $200 USD.

        • @McFly:

My 11.6 inch asus baytrail laptop has Win 8.1 with bing…cost $240 has 2gb ram, bigger than 9" screen so MS must have different criteria..

        • @bircoe: 0" < 9"

        • @zeggie: Cool story bro.

Anyway, here it is from the horse's mouth:
          http://blogs.windows.com/bloggingwindows/2014/04/02/thoughts…

… Windows will be available for 0 dollars to hardware partners for Windows Phones and tablets smaller than 9” in size.

This might also be where the 1GB myth (and maybe the <$200 one) originated:

Today we announced that the Windows 8.1 Update will support Intel’s Bay Trail Cost Reduced options, along with 1GB RAM and 16 GB storage configurations which are popular on entry level tablets and notebooks.

I like how the TW700 has a proper USB host port.

      • +1

If only we could buy that online…ugh.

    • +1

Lol so it does run Crysis.

      • +1

Yes it will, lucky you didnt ask is Crysis playable on this :P

      • The video's tablet is a 2GB box. with the 1GB, you're lucky to have 200MB free after a virgin boot (ie. nothing running in memory) let alone any of the apps you install.

    • Cant compare it to a Winbook TW801 - it has 2GB RAM (just a bit over 1.2GB free after boot). Crysis will struggle with 1GB RAM even worse than this.

      • Ever heard of virtual memory?

        • Yes. It runs like crap. And you were saying?

        • @bchliu: said the guy that has one..

        • @eXtremist:
Referring to the use of Virtual Memory and limiting to 1GB for swapping. All of my devices run quite adequate with 2GB+.

        • @bchliu: Virtual memory is actually quite snappy with decently fast flash storage, sucks entirely on mechanical disks though.

  • What is the Microsoft signature edition? Its the same price.

Does anyone know if this has GPS and OTG USB?

    • signature version wont ship to Aust.

    • No gps

      • would of been awesome deal if it had gps

        • Out of curiosity - what GPS software would you be running on WIndows 8.1 x86?

        • +1

          @bchliu:

I use tablets for drone software. In this case ardupilot. Needs GPS for maps, follow me, guided navigation.software is APM ground sation.

        • @bchliu: oziexplorer

  • since this is full win8.1, would i be able to use this as a torrent machine if I can remote into it and hook a hard drive via the usb port…. mind you transferring the files off from this to the NAS via wifi will be painfully slow tho….

    • Sure, why not. Could possibly use a USB NIC as well.

      • shame it only have a single usb… wonder if a hub would work with both usb hard drives and usb nic

        • +3

This is a standard PC running a full x86 CPU and 32 bit Windows. It's not a proprietary OS or an ARM based device running something like Windows RT. So anything you can do on a regular Windows PC you can do with this including any PC compatible hardware using the regular Windows 8 32 bit drivers drivers.

The only issue where you might have issues is power. It's unlikely the USB port will be able to supply a large amount of power so you would want to look at using a powered USB hub if plugging in a few things.

        • +1

yes but youll have to buy a set of cables to form a network that both charges and provides a hub functionality

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3LhqtJ4Z9sk

    • +2

don't know exactly your plan but considering that a torrent machine would usually run on 24/7 then the be careful since the usb port is used to recharge and to access usb devices via otg, however it is only one or the other… not everything at the same time. at least that is my experience with my toshiba wt8 which was some sort a disappointment.

  • +1

    Colour: Black Licorice - wot?
Awesome (standard) price. Wish I could justify buying one of these just to play around with, but I can't think of any good uses for it. Perhaps good for watching movies in bed (keeping in mind though that most of the eMMC will be taken up by the OS)

    • Not an issue if you stream over your home network though.

    • There is a MicroSD card slot, and it also takes μUSB drives so it won't be much of an issue. Stick in a OTG drive and you're good to go with storage.. just don't expect super fast file transfer over USB2.0.

The only thing to note is that the tablet charges over that same USB port, so this means no USB usage while charging.

  • +1

So you'll get maybe 10gb of usable storage and 1gb of ram when running a x86/x64 version of windows 8.1 will be slow torture..

    I've got a laptop with 4gb ram and win 8.1 and that's horrendously slow…

    • But 365.

    • They do "optimise" their windows for tablet. I don't know what they did, but I've heard from people that MS did reduce the size of Windows and stuff for tablets.

That being said, from what I've gathered from forums, 1GB ram is usable, painful but usable, but you can't run more than few tabs on IE and blah.

      • Windows 10 and the new IE in win 10 will make this tablet even more usable when released.

        • +1

Apparently they are making new type of browser I've heard… The codename I believe was Spartan?

Also, I've heard that the UI is better for desktop and blah. I simply hope they deliever decent product this time. (Windows 8 is fine in my opinion, after I got used to it, but it took me a long time before I could use it without going huh.)

EDIT: I hope to God it's free or at least dirt cheap for Windows 8.1 users to upgrade to it.

        • Yeah, spartan looks very exciting.

        • +2

          So much Halo references…

p.s. I love my Cortana on WP, I hope they make one for Windows 10 as well (I have a Surface Pro).

        • +2

@AznMitch: Cortana is in the next Windows 10 preview due this month

        • Yay!

    • +5

You need an SSD for your laptop, 4GB of RAM is more than enough for easy tasks.

    • +2

Computer performance is much more than just ram. If your CPU or HDD is the bottle neck throwing another 32g of ram at it won't make a difference.

1G of ram in this case pretty much limits the tablet to a few simultaneous tasks. And that's what it markets for.

    • Windows 8.1 Bing edition (what this is) uses WIMBoot as described here:
      http://www.howtogeek.com/196416/wimboot-explained-how-window…

Its roughly about a 10GB footprint inc Page file and hibernation file. a 32GB eMMC (ie 28GB in "real" size) has about 18GB remaining if the OEM didnt bloat it with crap.

    • +1

I got the Pendo Pad 7 running Windows 8.1 with Bing and it's not horrendously slow, performs excellently in fact. Use it for what it's designed for - web browsing, media consumption - and not what it is obviously not - gaming, hardcore programming/file editing - and you wouldn't know it only has 1GB of RAM.

If you buy a cheap tablet expecting it to replace your desktop of course you'll be disappointed. Have reasonable expectations and it'll surprise you.

  • +1

Pity no hdmi or 64-bit EFI .

  • Great price for a Windows 8.1 tablet from a "name" oem.

With cherry trail being announced as shipping over the past day or so it might be worth waiting for the next generation of cheap Windows 8.1 tablets. The cherry trail CPUs look to be significantly better in terms of graphics performance and with power savings as well.

    • +2

Add another year on top of that for the $AUD to come back

    • +1

There are no benchmarks but looks like they are twice as fast in graphics performance. Can encode at double the frame-rate at 1080p.

      http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2015/01/intel-begins-shipping…

New new chipset also supports wireless charging.

    • +1

There's always something better to wait for though …

      • yep, could wait your lifetime not jumping on cos you are waiting for the next best thing..

    • But the main point is not when cherry trail comes out, the main point is when cherry trail hits $200 mark. Because it's surely at least 1.5 to 2 years away.

      • The Trail CPUs (and following iterations) are Intel's tablet/phone play, so Cherry Trail should come in at the same price point as Bay Trail. Should see Chinese OEMs like Pipo and Onda bring out tablets with the new CPUs in Q2. HP and company shouldn't be too far behind.

  • How did you guys buy it? It doesn't ship to Australia

    • It appears to, as far as I can tell. Pretty tempting, too!

    • I got $8.13 postage to Melbourne

      • =AUD10.40 using the Amazon converter…

  • What? I tried Sydney and it says no…

  • +2

Toshiba 8" version (in gold) for $19 more, "11 hour" (v "8") battery, better camera, and less memory bandwidth. Hmmm…

edit: I thought it had microHDMI, but neither does.

    • Nice find - I personally find 8" tablets to be perfect size for a small tablet - I had a 7" tablet once and gave it away as it felt like I was using a phone screen (I was used to a 5.5" Note phone screen at the time).

    • (nevermind)

  • +3

    Can I say dupe?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/170088

99.99 is the RRP for this, it has been this price since it was released

    http://camelcamelcamel.com/HP-Stream-Windows-Includes-Person…

It was briefly sold out prior to Black Friday when the last deal was posted, but it was always available for back order.

    • hah, and it only got 5 votes, and yet this has 31 already….. wonder why its popular today.

      • Probably because L plater posting and the Black Friday being so close that we were expecting deals on tablets that are better than this. (i.e. if you have methods to ship tablets from US, refurb Dell Venue 8 Pro, 2GB RAM, z3740 etc, was around this price or slightly above this price.)

    • +1

      Duplicates
Don't post duplicates (deals that are already on the site). Please search OzBargain before posting.
      Exceptions:
The original deal is older than one month, and was expired or sold out between then and now.

According to the site rule, I don't think it is duplicate.

  • is this a kind of tablet where i can install any software like a desktop software? —-> like surface pro 3

but not an APP ? —> like surface pro 2…

    • +2

      you can do both

    • +1

Hmmm? You can do those things in all the Pro lines?

Basically it uses same CPU as the ones that goes into netbooks. If you are talking about the metro apps that is on the store in Windows 8.1, you can.

  • so tempted….

Got two just before christmas for $198 delivered USD with the AMEX free shipping deal. Probably the best bang for buck device I've ever gotten for $99

    • +2

Re bang for buck, you have probably never bought a Rabbit (mind you, nor have I)

      • O.O

  • XBMC machine? Would be interesting to see how it performs.
