Presale: Pipo X7 Intel Quadcore Windows Mini PC USD $89.98 Inc Shipping @ GearBest

PipoX7LM

I'm a massive sucker for these tiny Windows boxes and I saw PiPO have released the X7. The PiPO X7 is an Intel Quadcore Mini PC which runs Windows 8.1 with Bing. The enclosure is apparently all aluminium. PiPO has been around for a while, predominately making tablets.

I asked GearBest for a coupon for the PiPO X7 and they gave me one for my readers so I thought I'd share it as everyone seems interested in small, cheap Windows boxes. Cheapest I can find for the X7 on AliExpress is $109.99.

There is more information here: Mod: Site removed - do not link to site with affiliate links

There's also more info on the Intel chip itself here: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-Atom-Z3736F-Tablet-SoC.12…

Technical Specs:

  • Chipset: Intel Baytrail quad core processor with Intel HD graphics (Z3736F)
  • RAM: 2 GB DDR3
  • Storage: 32 GB eMMC + micro SD slot up to 32GB

This seems like a half decent option for a proper Kodi / XBMC machine, rather than these substandard android ones. As long as you can remove Windows 8.1 / customise it.

    • +2

Apparently the only restriction of Windows with Bing is that it has to ship with Bing as the default search engine so can't see why not. I'll see if I can find out if it will support Linux but, given its X86, it should be able to as people have been doing it on the MeegoPad T01.

      • +3

Warning it's not possible to install linux yet due to UEFI. Lack of 64 bit support. Windows only at this stage.

I have a baytrail laptop and besides graphic intensive games it's fantastic.

        • -7

If you're using it for home theatre I would avoid Linux due to video rendering issues (still… lol).

        • +3

          @Diji1: I use Xbmcbuntu….. don't have any video issues….

        • +3

          @Diji1:
As a long term 'nix user with a HTPC (AMD APU) running mythtv backend and a number of XBMC "frontends" around the house, I wasn't aware I was having video rendering problems. I better have another look…

        • +1

@Forfiet: OK. Er … keep on going then.

        • +1

Many Linux support UEFI including secure boot. The installation may be more difficult, but it will depend on the UEFI on this particular system.

        • Intel NUC DN2820 is UEFI based and installing linux is fine. So not sure why you believe UEFI limits being able to install linux.

        • @michaelf:

Note where I said lack of 64 bit support. Then do a Google. Affects baytrail only (which this item is)

          NUCs are completely different.

    • +1

would be kick a$$ with linux,
      or hackintosh :)

        • +6

You either have never used a Bay trail atom on 2gb with ssd, or were using it for the wrong purpose.

        • +1

          Quite ignorant sir.

        • You've got to experience Bay trail tablets with 1gb. They run pretty smoothly surprisingly. But definitely better with 2gb that's more than enough.

        • +1

          @bigbosssnake:

I can't say that I have. I have an Iconia Tab W500 (I think). It has 2gb and windows 8.1. A lot of people might be satisfied with it, I am not.

Any word as to whether the 2gb limitation is in the CPU itself, or can be changed in BIOS?

        • @tomokaicho:

It is a limitation of the chip set (SOC) and can't be over come.

        • @not a bargain: Just to be clear, it's the previous-gen clovertrail ones ("2" in the processor number) that have the 2GB limitation. The bay trail atoms like this one ("3" in the proc number) have a 4GB limit. Of course if the RAM is soldered on like this one, you can't upgrade it anyway.

        • @eug: Yes and no. I remember that first batch of Baytrail CPUs could not support x64 because of software issues. I am not sure whether they fixed it.

        • @AznMitch: The Thinkpad 8 comes in a 4GB RAM flavour. It uses the Atom Z3795 processor,

        • @eug: It's not first batch. First batch were Z3740 and Z3770, I believe.

          https://www.change.org/p/tablet-makers-fix-the-lack-of-64-bi…

        • @AznMitch: OK, so bay trail atoms now have a 4GB limit. :)

        • I am not sure about limits though.

a processor with 64-bit memory addresses can directly access 264 bytes (=16 exbibytes) of byte-addressable memory. (straight from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/64-bit_computing)

Though obviously they will be limited by the slots available.

        • @AznMitch: Mathematical limits are irrelevant here, as no laptop can actually support 16 exibytes of memory.

If Intel artificially limits max memory support to 4GB, then it's definitely a limit.

        • @eug: That's why I am not sure about the limits. I've never seen articles about RAM limits imposed by Intel.

I've only seen them being referred to as being able to support x64, that's why I gave you the absolute limit.
I don't know, maybe they imposed RAM limits on them… Doesn't sound unlikely, remembering how netbooks were confined to a small form factor by Intel.

        • +1

@AznMitch: Intel definitely imposes a memory limit. I thought it was common knowledge. They don't want their low-end parts to eat into their CULV market share.

        • @eug: I've learnt something new today then. :)

        • @eug:

From the horses mouth it is 2GB: http://ark.intel.com/products/82115/Intel-Atom-Processor-Z37…

Yet it can still operate in 64 bit mode.

  • +25

Oh awesome this one come with Power button! Been waiting for one with that feature for a while. ;-)

    • +23

It's depressing just how many boxes don't have a power button. I hate that I have to list it as a feature :p

      • +16

        Depressing - pun intentional?

        • +4

Yep - It's not Ozbargain without the bad puns right?

  • +5

You can get it over at geekbuying for US$93.10 with this 5% coupon: QRBHLEUL

I've already used it once, so I'm not 100% certain it will work, but worth a shot.

    http://www.geekbuying.com/item/PIPO-X7-Windows-8-1-Smart-Min…

    • +4

Also notes on this one "1 x Power adapter (A right AC Adapter will be sent as your shipping country)"

Edit: code looks to be accepted for me too - thanks.

    • +4

I managed to get a new price from GearBest now.

      • +2

Good work. Now, can you find out if Windows is actually activated? The meego requires a $25 fee to activate Windows because it's not an <8 inch tablet?

        • +1

          Keen to know too…..

        • Microsoft recently changed that so any size tablets under $200 get free Windows 8.1

        • +1

          @OzzyOzbourne: But this isn't a tablet…

        • @OzzyOzbourne:

With the condition that the device has no more than 2gb RAM. tje reason being that MS does not want to cannibalise sales of lower end laptops.

      • +1

Nice. Can you get them to include the Aus PSU? :)
        Geekbuying does, and for USD93.09

        • +1

Pretty much all vendors send you the US adapter plus a US to AU converter.

        • @Darkscythe:

          Sent this question to geekbuying;

"A right AC Adapter will be sent as your shipping country" - Does this mean that I'd be receive an australian AC cable for this device, or does it mean a seperate european/american to australian adapter would be included?

          Reply from geekbuying;
          "Dear Kiah,
          Thank you for your inquiry.
Yes, we will send you a Australian Plug."

If gearbest is going with converters and geekbuying is providing proper aussie plugs, then that's no competition for me, regardless of minor price difference.

        • You could have more luck on this one but all devices I've purchased from GearBest or GeekBuying have been a UK/US plug plus an Universal to AU adapter.

      • +1

Nice work evil one. We're getting closer to $100 AUD.

        • Would you please suggest how get this one $100AUD? I am surprise as most of the website have about $125AUD or about $98USD

        • @greatbuy: It was just an Ozbargain fantasy to see if collectively we could get the price lower. Other than that we'd have to take on the stock market and get the Aussie dollar higher to achieve the same result.

  • +1

I'm thinking of a nice little plex + steam box?
Price is right, SFF, just be ideal with IR port.
Nice it has ethernet though, but has a US PSU (any idea on PSU specs?)

  • No info on preformance. "More info" link is just fluff

    • +1

There are many 7"-8" Windows tablets in the same price range with the same specs.
Windows 8.1 works pretty well on this hardware, it's good for web surfing, watching movies, even some light gaming.

    • +1

      Manufacturer page is here:
      http://www.pipo.com/product.php?id=157

Says it has either a CPU "up to 1.83Ghz(Z3735F) or 2.16Ghz(Z3736F)". Doesn't mention the graphics card; I'd be interested to know if it can offload video decoding to it, rather than relying on the CPU.

      • +1

The CPU is the Z3736F - I confirmed it with GearBest. The graphics card is the onboard Intel HD - It should support hardware decoding as everything does these days.

        • +3

Do you know how hard you are making it to say "No" to this deal? ;-)

      • Interests me too. Can the onboard video do dxva hardware decoding?

  • -1

    USB: 4x USB 2.0 port

    • +1

      Keyboard
      Mouse
      ExHD
      Spare

      • +8

probably meant no support for USB 3.0 is meh

    • +38

      the price son…

      • +1

        ok dad…… :)

  • This little device may make me reconsider building a HTPC these summer holidays.

Surely Ozcollectively speaking they will give us a better deal. I say $100 AUD shipped is fair and they may just find them self Ozbargained.

  • Looks like a good deal!

Is anyone able to tell me if the specs are ok to log into a VM?

Both my wife and I work from home at times and tustle between the laptop (I cant log into work using my Mac).

Hoping this would solve my problem :)

    • +1

I can't see why not as that's not a particularly taxing task but someone with more experience could confirm.

    • +3

It should be fine. The point of that whole "thin-client admin" stuff is that the thin client doesn't need much in the way of resources.

      • +1

Exactly - provided your VM is in work and you're just remoting into it there's little or no stress on your machine.

        • Thanks a lot guys. Just to clarify that I don't think it's a VM. I'm just logging onto an external site in Chrome and then it opens up a window with a blue bar on the top. Not too sure if its VM.

        • +3

@alwayslooking: Sounds like a remote session to a server, probably running windows I assume? Either that or Citrix?

        • @Jackson: I think its Citrix. Should be fine still?

        • +1

@alwayslooking: yes, I use Citrix on my z2560 dual core atom, any performance issues I have had have been server issues

  • what speed is the LAN port?

    • Fast Ethernet - so 10/100

  • +4

    Other Features: Power button

  • Upgradable to 4gb?

    • No, this CPU only supports 2Gb.

  • Wonder how this would go displaying 1080P video?

    • Should handle it fine, due to the Intel HD graphics

  • would graphics have enough grunt to play full Bluray content?

    • +1

I'd guess. I've got an old motherboard using a 780g chip that handles bluray fine.

  • Storage: 32 GB eMMC + micro SD slot up to 32GB

So does this mean it has 32GB onboard already? Of which I guess the OS is taking a chunk out of?

    Windows 8.1
Isn't an OEM license for windows alone already over $100?

    • "With bing"

    • +3

Yep, 32GB onboard storage which the OS uses part of.

With regards to the OS, it's Windows 8 with Bing - This is Microsoft's "free" version of Windows for device manufacturers. No difference for the end user though.

    • Yes bing is that sucks.

  • +3

Should be an awesome VoIP mini exchange with 3CX!!

    • +1

Good idea. I've got some IP phones I should put to good use.

      • Ordered one, will test it as VoIP mini exchange with 3CX,
        Should do the job.

        • I used to run 3CX on a netbook without issue so I'd guess it'll be do it no issue.

  • Is this mini pc enough to login WiFi internet for browsing for children… or guests?
Is it coming with windows 8.1? So can run word docs and excell as well?

    • huh? its a pc with windows… should do whatever you're asking, its just a pc.

    • +2

I would say "yes" to all of those questions.
Obviously it doesn't come with an MS Office license, so you would need to separately purchase Word/Excel if you haven't already got it.

    • +1

Yup more than capable. It's guts are what's in a lot of windows tablets already on the market

    • +58

pretty sure you shouldn't be browsing the internet for children on any device.

    • +4

      Take a seat over there..

  • +1

OK, as a XBMC box it seems like it will do pretty well. How about as a box for steam. I realise not actually playing any games itself, but what about in home streaming?

The other things i've been looking at replacing the HTPC with are an Asus Chromebox, but then it will dual boot chrome os/open elec, or an intel NUC, which will cost more. Any got comments on price/performance ratio etc. What will i not be able to do with this that might be doable with an NUC or chromebox?

Thanks for the help in advance, this seems like a great deal. (i saw the other post for it cheaper as well)

    • +2

Apparently Steam streaming isn't too demanding - but the wireless is 150Mbps so not sure if that's sufficient.

In terms of performance, it's going to be fine for XBMC and the basics (i.e. Word, browsing, light gaming) but nothing super taxing. A NUC would be more powerful but significantly more costly.

Price has also been updated to $89.98 now too.
