Air Asia -> Indonesia ? I think there are more topic jokes possible. Avoid monsoon season.

Don't mean to troll and I know lots of people love it there but… you couldn't pay me to go to Bali. I don't understand why it is so popular, everything I hear about that place only strengthens my resolve to never set foot there. My friend just got back from a week there with her partner and she said it was the worst holiday they have ever had… partly due to the Air Asia re-routing their direct flight to a flight via KL with a 13 hour stop over, then cancelling their return flights at 4AM on the morning of departure… but also partly due to the insane prices ($15 for a cocktail), rip off taxis, filthy streets and stomach bugs. The holiday cost them a little over $2000 each. This is just one example, but I keep hearing bad things about Bali… is this some kind of trick known only by returning visitors intent on keeping the rest of us away from this tranquil paradise?!

    • +11

      At least she got back…..

    • +11

Sounds like they went to the wrong Bali.

I've been at least 10 times, the cocktails are about $8 and during happy hour 2 for 1.

The taxis are cheap as they start at $1 Aussie and 10km later they are at $3.00.

The stomach bug, is usually from drinking all the fruit juices, unless they drank the water.

Bali is not a place for snobs, yes it's not the most cleanest place, but for relaxing in the pool, cheap beers, cheap food, its paradise to many.

It sounds like your friends didn't listen to any advice, ie only travel by the blue meter cabs,I've never had flights cancel and admit that would suck.

    • +2

$15 for a cocktail and rip off taxis? Are you sure they went to Bali? Maybe Nusa Dua i guess..
Been a ton of times, i can see why others might not like it but i love going back when i can.

    • $15 cocktails would be those made from real liquor vs the cheaper ones made from local hooch

Since only tourists drink spirits, its highly taxed.

The only cheap booze is Bintang or other local beer.

Like all travel, the "when in rome" rule applies

Likewise buying steak and wanting choice cuts you won't find it cheap in Bali

The AirAsia debacle isn't Bali's fault.

But Bali is Bogan paradise, you need to get away from Nusa Dua or Kuta to find the real Bali.

    • +2

It's only the uncultured snobs who ever complain about Bali or Phuket etc. MissLouise.

They go to Bali/Phuket thinking they're going to a cheap Australia. Fact is the culture is completely different, as is the scenery. Yes, it is not as "clean".

For me that's most of the charm. I love experiencing how the rest of the world lives. Why go to another country if you don't want to see something different? Stay closed minded and in Australia then right?

As for the statement "you couldn't pay me to go to Bali", you then say "everything I hear". So you've never been, but go on the testimony of the kinds of people I've mentioned above.

There's a bucketload of people who will tell you the exact opposite, including me. And yes, I have had the "Bali belly" the last time I went, even after avoiding the water and juices. Sometimes s**t happens. I've also had bad bellies here in Australia due to something I've eaten. I'm not immigrating because of them.

I just suck it up and enjoy the rest of my holiday.

But yes, if you enjoy the level of comfort enjoyed here in Australia and cannot go without, then absolutely don't go. I think it would prevent you from seeing half the world, but some people just aren't meant for travelling.

      • +6

Uncultured bogans are the majority of people who profess their love for Bali as a place to experience 'culture'.
Bali's culture is long gone. As the rice paddies are carved up for villas and the daughters of the rice farmers turn to prostitition, rich westerners are ripping apart every last bit of beauty on that island.
The beaches are almost unusable because of the filth pumped into the sea. I have had nappies float past me in the surf.
Like snorkeling? too bad all the reefs are dead from dynamite fishing.
Don't even get me stated on the corruption.
Taxis? Over Xmas/new year, none of the taxis would put on their meter (including blue birds). $20 minimum fee or don't get in.

If floating in a pool, wearing your bintang singlet and buying cheap beer is your idea of experiencing another 'culture', then enjoy.

        • +3

What Bali did you go to? Anything away from the south has lots of culture left.

Snorkelling is great in the North, or hop on a boat to Nusa Lembongan or the Gilis. Either of them is in better nick than what I saw during my last visit to the Great Barrier Reef.

        • Yes I've heard that about the north. I suppose it's a matter of time until the westerners and indo corruption ruin that too.

The reefs at Gili's have been cyanide/dynamited and continue to be subjected to it. The main island at gili is on its way to ruin and is overrun by English backpackers.

I've spent time across indo including remote Java/Sumatra. The entire environment is on its way to ruin. Bali is just the worst example of the lot and nothing is being done to prevent it.

Personally, I find Bali a depressing place to visit.

      • Hi Ramrunner,

Thanks for your reply (and to everyone for your comments which have been interesting to read). I'm not sure I agree with you about the label 'uncultured snobs', I can attest that my friends are very cultured people, and it wouldn't be fair to class them as snobs, just your average aussies (if there even is such a thing). I don't think they went expecting to find a 'cheap Australia', but to experience a different country, people and culture, and they were disappointed with the reality.

Yes, as I have never been there, I can only rely on the testimony of others. I would assume that many people do this when planning a trip, hence the popularity of Tripadvisor. I'm glad you had a positive experience in Bali, what did you enjoy about it?

I agree that you have to accept that when you go to a place like Bali, there is every chance you will get sick, and if you don't get sick, then take that as a bonus. S**t can happen anywhere, and most travellers would have a story that illustrates this. When I was in my mid 20s I spent a few years working and travelling my way around the world. Being a solo female traveller, I was always very careful about the pitfalls of travel, including illness and worse. I was lucky that despite my adventures, the worst thing that ever happened was having my purse stolen. It was my fault - I was in Belfast and had let my guard down because I felt safe. It was inconvenient at the time and I lost $1000, but I don't mind because nothing worse than that happened, even though I had been in much 'riskier' environments.

Whether it is valid or invalid, for whatever reasons I have this image of Bali as a place where everything that is special about it is being corrupted in the pursuit of the tourist dollar, particularly the culture and the environment, and I don't feel I can support that by travelling there. I know Bali isn't the only place where this occurs, but as one of our closest neighbours and most popular holiday destinations, it is happening right on our doorstep and I feel we are enabling, and encouraging it. Given the popularity of Bali with tourists over the years, I am wondering whether tourism has had a positive financial impact on the people of Bali? Where does the money go? Back into the island? Is the wealth distributed relatively equitably or is it funnelled back to only the wealthy few? Given that Indonesia is the largest recipient of Australian foreign aid, and Australians visit Bali in droves, are there projects underway to ensure that Bali can maintain a sustainable tourism trade without further compromising their environment? Or will it be exploited into oblivion for the sake of a quick buck? I think I already know the answers, but I am happy to be proven wrong. I'm not a hardcore hippie or environmentalist, but I think if I went to Bali I would feel sad about the situation there and guilty returning home to my fortunate standard of living in Australia having consumed, used and disposed of in order to satisfy my desire for a holiday at low cost to myself.

This is why I can't go there and don't understand why others do. I agree, this mindset will probably prevent me from seeing half the world but I'm ok with that.

At $164 return from Perth, it makes it a great stepping stone for a cheap SEA holiday. You don't have to depart Bali's airport and head to Kuta.

Why not book a connecting flight to somewhere else exciting? You could choose to stay in Indonesia and head to Central Java, or you could get a cheap flight to Thailand, Philippines etc. Once you are in SEA, your options and potential for savings are huge vs booking a flight direct from Australia.

  • We also had the option recently of re-routing to KL then to Bali or receiving a refund.

We took the refund and went with Jetstar.

My understanding is that they don't have permission or the right paper work to fly direct to Bali.

Regardless, I would look into this more closely if you're considering it.

Ps it was my first time to Bali. My partner and I stayed in Ubud and had a brilliant time. 'Mingles' has 2 for 1 $7 cocktails..

    • +2

They don't/didn't have a permit to fly Melbourne > Denpasar direct is the news I heard. They do have the correct permits for many other routes, including Perth to Denpasar.

  • Aahh, another trip to Bali??
    Why wouldn't ya???

    • -2

      Why wouldn't ya???

Not been reading the news this last week?

      • yeah. More news is better. So you know which places to avoid.
It's a whole different country. Has its own good spots and bad ones. Australian tourism has had a lot to do with transforming the scenery there in both good and bad ways.
At the end of the day, your holiday experience depends on what sort of people are around you. If you are after cheapo accomodation and free beers, you will be around ppl who also are looking for the same. Most of them bogans going there to get the max bang for their Centrelink buck.

Bali is a great weekend gateway, heck it might be worthwhile (cheaper) than going to Rottness or down south!

    1. Buy a cheap ticket you can buy a return trip $148 with AirAsia (see Feb-16) price match with Jetstar that's $133.20 (no need baggage travel light!)
    2. Stay 3 nights @ the many cheap and clean 3-4 stars hotels total will be around $50 (per person - twin room)
    3. Visa fee will be approximately $45 plus departure tax $20 = $65
    4. Assuming you go in the morning and come back at night to maximize your time that means you have 4 days x 2 meals (breakfast at hotel) = 8 meals @ $10ea = $80 and mind you $10 is PLENTY if you know where you go - don't go to overpriced places in Jimbaran/Kuta/Seminyak
    5. Hire a driver for the 4 days @400,000 per day (if you go with 4 friends that's 100k ea) = $10
    6. Activities - depending on people preference you might want to go for an adventure (ATV, watersports, rafting etc), shopping (many new modern malls have sprung up), partying, or just relaxing - set aside max $100

    Total ~$440!

Now for people in Perth, 3 nights at Margaret River would cost around $165 per person for a twin room (3.5 star) based on a quick search. Food for 4 days assuming you only go out for lunch & dinner might cost around $125, fuel for 1.5 tank $75/4 people = $19 plus the activities (Caves, Maze, Wineries etc) $100.

    Total ~$410

Now why wouldn't you want to go to Bali for $30 extra!! with amazing food, people and sceneries! Of course you need to know where to go - do your research and you'll have a blast in Bali.

This is the main reason I keep going back to Malaysia again and again.. I can stay there for 2 weeks for the same price I'd spend in Sydney in a long weekend…. It's insane..

      • +1

Same. Malaysia has almost become a second home for us and a great hub to bounce around the rest of SEA. The food is out of this world, especially all the banana leaf offerings around brick fields. You can get a 5 star hotel for well under $100 with a little homework. Awesome well connected and clean modern monorail system that leaves most western cities for dead, and cheap! Entertainment is affordable too with cinema tickets less than $5 each. Can't go wrong.

if you go to rottness, beware the rottness monster!

I'm in Bali now… Dunno what's wirh the negative comments
Everything is quite cheap let alone the flight.
    +1 from me

You can also explore a lot more of Indonesia from DPS with cheap domestic flights - Surabaya for shopping, Yogyakarta for sites (Borobudur, Prambanan), Sumatra for orang utans, etc. etc. Just avoid Jakarta - you'll just see a lot of traffic ;)

Bali is great for a resort holiday (just follow TA reviews) and Ubud is great these days with heaps of fab restaurants. But as an Ozbargainer, the lure of shopping in Surabaya is just too big!!

  • -1

I agree the place is a dump, I hate the way the authorities there are always trying to set you up, wanting bribes etc

They do nothing about people selling methanol in drinks, also do nothing about Street people selling drugs though if a tourist was to buy them they would be locked up before you know it.

To add insult to injury you have to pay money to leave the s$&t hole.

    • +7

Don't like Bali? Very well, so don't go back there next time, as simple as that. No need to bad mouth other people's country because you're just a visitor, a guest of their country, so don't expect things are done the Australian way.

When I go visit your house, I don't expect you to run your house like the way I do because I know people are different. I would just enjoy your hospitality and thank you for welcoming me into your house. When I go home, I wouldn't talk behind your back and telling my neighbours how dirty and messy your house was. Why? Because I respect you and I know I was a guest, therefore I need to watch my manners!

Better shut down TripAdvisor.com on your logic Gorod…

  • i am crying looking at this deal as i spent $750 return last year from melbourne :(

    • +1

It's always much cheaper for those in perth than anyone else, don't feel too bad. I always get excited by these "Return flights to bali $150!!!" etc sales, then it says 'ex perth' -Melbourne $600 return or some shit.. gah!

I haven't been to Bali yet, but it seems to be that Thailand is better value in terms of holiday quality x_x

    • +1

      Hi Vijay,

As Lunawinter said, Perth is always cheaper than Melbourne. However, there are $404 return flghts available now and also a lot of availability if you go to $412:
      http://iwantthatflight.com.au/x2MELDPS-Flights-from-Melbourn…

Jetstar had a sale 2 months ago that had Bali flights from Melb at $322 return:

So its not all bad :)

My best experience in Bali 11 days stayed in reports with all inclusive cost me $110 per day plus flight. And came with 5+ gain weight. Was felt simply paradise, alcohol pouring in swimming pool bar 12am to late evening no any charge,3 times buffet on beach felt like wedding dinner, live music, live shows every night at beach( depend on rain), 24 hours restaurant open and food was great plus fine dining dinner restaurant felt spoiled.
I even did not went out I came for relax and my picture after 11 days told all story.
What you get in australia$110 per night crapy cabbin and not even heater or cooling. Where room was made of marble equal 2 bed room unit.plus unlimited food and booze. Needs Two persons for this deal. So$220 per night for two.

    • Hi Zuban what was the name of this place? I have been wanting to try an all inclusive in Bali.

Bali's great. I'm surprised by how many people on here are haters. There are so many different types of holidays you can enjoy in Bali and all at great value for money. Proper planning prevents poor vacationing! anyone that goes to Bali and doesn't have a great time needs to do a bit more research/planning before they go on their next holiday.

Miss Louises friends spending $2000 each for a week in Bali and still having the worst holiday ever speaks more about the type of people they are than Bali as a holiday destination……

      • Check malia benua blue package pre book will save you more

  • 11 days all in the resort? You need to get out and see the real beauty of Bali!

  • oops just got that Philippines deal…

  • Maria benua resort, blue package little off season will make rate cheaper. Include cocktail, beer, wine unlimited.
