  • anyone want to go OOL > NRT from 9th to 22nd april? Need a second person

  • Does anyone add the bundles? I can't work out if it's a better deal to accrue FF points and get a meal / seat selection or just save myself the $65 x 2.

What are my chances for 2 seats together if I don't preselect?

    • +1

Could be hit and miss depending on how full the plane is. So far we've only had separate seats once in lots of AirAsia and JetStar flying without pre-selected seats. But we were able to play musical chairs with a few different people, swap around and sit together eventually :)
In saying that, I didn't want to do that again, so I've paid for pre-selected seats this time.

  • Thanks OP - getting $620 return from the Gold Coast with 15kg luggage, is that a fair price? I can't seem to get the $450 price :(

    • Same here. Booked gold coast to Tokyo return in august for $1216 all up. That was with 25-30kg of luggage for one person and carry on for the other.
Plus the flight over is via Melbourne which is a pickle but at least the flight is overnight so no hotel for one night.
I'm guessing the cheaper fares were at as different time??

  • Don't forget to use your smartphone, and pay with Mastercard DEBIT card, in order to avoid the credit card surcharges!

    • Does any Mastercard debit card work? The Jetstar website only talks about the Jetstar Mastercard having no credit card surcharge, but I'm curious whether an ING Orange Everyday debit card would also work (i.e. do Jetstar just check whether it's a Mastercard debit card, probably from the first 4 digits of the card, and then assume that it must be one of their cards, and waive the fees?).

    • Why do you need to use your smartphone?

      • I put my CBA debit card into the website and it showed $25 fee per person as it's not one of their cards but on the mobile site it says any mastercard debit is fee free but I can't see the 2 for 1 deals on the phone app.

    • I just paid the flights with my citibank credit card so I can get the travel insurance, not so bad with $50 extra surcharge.

  • Very good.. my friend just bought tickets about 2 days ago :(

  • Thanks OP! We went Japan last year and we so wanted to go again and this deal just made us go for it. Syd <-> Osaka $1402 all up. (15kg checked baggage onwards, 40kg return baggage, meals for both on Cairns to Osaka and return flights, inflight use $10 vouchers at 10% discount, one comfort pack and selected standard seats for Cairns to Osaka and return.)

    So happy right now :)

Now time to spend some more on JR pass! Would be $600 for two x weekly passes, taking the expense all up to $2000 including JR pass. Not bad at all as JAL usually costs $1200 return per person.

    • Don't suppose there are any good deals on the JR passes around?

      • +1

The cheapest I found last time was by HIS travel. Just checked their current rate and the weekly economy one is $293. I think that's quite reasonable. You can do more google searching as there are a number of other agencies that provide JR passes but I don't think it will get much cheaper than $293 as in JPY it costs 28,300 JPY which is roughly $313.4 (Conversion rate of 90.3 JPY -> 1 AUD as on KVB Kunlun's website)

        • Thanks, a few bucks cheaper than the ones I was looking at.

        • +1

What is JR pass? Sorry I'm a newbie

        • +1

          @sagrules:

It's an all inclusive public transport pass. So you pay for 7 days (or 14) you get unlimited access to train/bus/ferry. Including the bullet train

        • @stevem42:

the cheapest JR all pass i could find was $280 in australia.
Therefore I usually buy R pass in overseas, i can get less than $250 from Taiwan.

        • awesome! Will look into this

        • +1

          @frozenkuku:
Do you have a link you could share for the $280 pass?

How do you go about buying from Taiwan?

          Cheers

        • @sagrules: I think JR stands for "Japan Rail". I'm pretty sure it doesn't stand for "Jetstar Reliability"

    • +2

Porco Rosso. Love the username. Was a childhood favourite animated film for me :)

  • Can anyone share their experience on the dreamliner?

    • i think I went on the dreamliner before - i didn't think it was that much different - a bit more space but I got the emergency seat - the only thing I remember is they had usb charger

    • +1

Personally I prefer A330-200 to dreamliner Boeing 787. The economy seat pitch of A330 is 31 and width is 17.5 vs 30 and 17 in dreamliner.

Even the row configuration of 2-4-2 in A330 is better than the 3-3-3 in dreamlinear.

    • It was the slightest bit quieter than the A330-200, and has a USB port.

  • is $3,172.80 for 3 adults, 1 child (including the plus bundle) a good deal? never been to japan so don't know how to compare against

    • How on earth are you getting $3100+?

I love her very much and I wouldn't trade her for the world. I do however miss out on all these sweet travel deals.

  • +1

I booked in the sales last year, looking forward to my 15 hour layover in Cairns on the way home! Going with my brother so get to be a cheapass - wife would kill me if I subjected her to jetstar again.

  • How do you get the 2-for-1 discount to apply? I searched during the promo dates, however the cheapest tickets I could find from MEL-NRT is $450+/person one way? Tried both in late Apr/May and August… help pls!

    • On their homepage, you need to click on the Japan 2 for 1 banner to have access to special fares.

  • Fellow bargain hunters,
I've bought the Japan tickets in a hurry using POLi payment method and not thinking about travel insurance. I've got a Citibank card that is eligible for complimentary travel insurance and common sense says that I wouldn't be eligible as I didn't pay for the tickets using their card. But I found this on their website:
International Travel Insurance for Citi Prestige, Citibank Rewards Credit Card - Signature and Emirates Citibank World® Cardholders
    Eligibility
Citi Prestige, Citibank Rewards Credit Card - Signature and Emirates Citibank World® Cardholders are eligible for International Travel Insurance, if their travel is for no more than six (6) consecutive months or less and when prior to leaving Australia their overseas travel ticket (but not taxes or airport or travel agent charges) was obtained by one or a combination of the following methods:
    * charging the cost of the overseas travel ticket to the cardholder's card; or
    * obtaining the overseas travel ticket under the Citibank Travel Program; or
    * obtaining the overseas travel ticket via the cardholder's airline frequent flyer program, provided that a minimum of 15,000 points were transferred to that frequent flyer program from points earned on a Citibank Card or via Citi Rewards, over a 12 month period prior to obtaining the overseas travel ticket; and

    * the person is a cardholder at the time they obtain their overseas travel ticket.

Does that last point mean I'm eligible?

    • +2

No you are ineligible. The key word is the final "and" in the clause.

      • Ahh missed that, thanks mate. Damn my selective reading.

Knew it sounded too good to be true!

Will now have to fork out more money in travel insurance :-( would've been better to use the citibank credit card and pay the surcharge. Bummer!

  • +3

    I'm going to Japan!

  • Damn you OzB. Deal too good to pass up.

Ended up paying $2295 for two adults and two kids from Melbourne to Osaka return (end of September).

  • Anyone would like to go on middle of April for around 2 weeks please let me know, from Melbourne to Tokyo.

    • I could be tempted by this. I've just bought a house and moving in soon so not sure how budgeting will go….. I love everything Japan.

      • PM me if you are interested to go!

  • just tried dummy booking
doesn't seem a superb good deal

    Adelaide to Tokyo, 2 people
with luggage of cos, total $1488.90
    that is $744.45 each person
and that is not including any meal yet

my friend just bought a ticket to japan through Cathay pacific for $700, included luggage and meal.

I just checked the receipt we purchased few years ago with jetstar promo, flew to japan with two people was $1224

    • You are right I just checked Cathay Pacific's website and they are having a promo, $758 return for adl-nrt. try to go with that.

    • Yes the cathay deal is a better deal especially if you are flying from perth. On too of the included luggage and meal they have better service too. And cathay transits in HK.

But i guess it might depends on the date and the point of origin. So just compare the two first.

  • tempted to book one way to japan $1000 for 2 adults and 3 kids in early dec during school holidays. its gc to tokyo direct. no stopover. but worried abt no deals coming back. we want to go to thailand for xmas and come home via scoot or air asia. one way flughts to oz in local currency is always cheaper than from oz. around 16/12 can start skiing in hokkaido?

  • Is there anyway to increase baggage allowance after booking? Worked out 20kg is better value than 15kg :(

    • Click on manage booking. There should be a section to allow you to increase it there - keep in mind that you'll be charged something a ridiculous amount in extra fees for adding baggage after your booking, so it's no longer the bargain you were expecting.

  • Return from Tokyo to Perth via Cairns - transit in Cairns for 13 hours and 30 minutes… any ideas on what there is to do in Cairns for this time?

    • Check cathay, they may have better deal depending on your date. The return flights is around 23hours with 13hours transit in HK though. But its better than cairn.

  • Forever alone. Anyone wanna duo up on this ? Can make exchange via paypal if you're cool wit it

    • +1

maybe start by saying which city and which month?

    • where will you be flying from? i'm interested in week of 1 May to 7 May

      • Cairns, End of May?

  • Going to Tokyo soon.

Any tips or advices for first-time travellers?

I only can speak very basic Japanese (learnt from anime) very nervous now.

    how's everyone's japanese btw?

Does anyone have any hotel recommendations - what's a good area to stay in?

      • +2

        i suggest shinjuku prince hotel
it's so close to kabuki street, 24/7 open.
So in the day time you go out and visit other places, come back after dinner, drop in your loot, and then you can still go out shopping in shinjuku.

other places close very early, around 8pm. It will be boring afterwards so i am sure you don't want to go back to hotel after 8.

Download the Japan Trains app. It'll help you save money by showing you the cheapest way to get around.

      • which app you recommend most?
i tried to search japan trains, it came out many

I'd recommend pairing it with Google Maps if you find it difficult to figure out which platform to catch the train to your destination. Google Maps is also useful for counting down the stations so you don't miss your stop. I don't recommend depending on Google Maps alone as it doesn't show all the train options.

There are plenty of people who willing to help you with your little or no Japanese speaking skills.

      Enjoy :)

    • Just got back from Osaka (first time) a few days ago with whatever I could remember from Japanese in high school, so reading and speaking were good enough.Everyone I met was extremely friendly and helpful however if you do try to speak English to them, speak slowly. However basic Japanese phrases were appreciated.

I recommend getting as much of an understanding of the subway system as possible as it can become quite overwhelming at first.
And I ended up with a lot of Yen coins towards the end of my trip. Perfect for the vending machines that are literally everywhere.

      Few more tips,
buy plenty of SD/Micro SD Cards before you fly, they are expensive in Japan.
There is no such a thing as vegan or halal food in Japan either.
Beer is cheaper than water in some places :)

      • upvote for beer cheaper than water!

      • Nah SD cards are cheaper in Japan, just avoid the large retailers for the same reasons you'd do the same here in Aus.

        • I bet there are cheaper shops out there but when I comparing with Aussie retailers, there were way expensive. Plus I only do OzBarganing in Australia, when I'm overseas, just a tourist no time for bargain hunting :)

  • Great price, thanks!

  • -1

If we do a large group booking / ozb meet up, they might give us further discounts.

  • Just trying to book during the sale period from gold coast to Tokyo but even though it says 2 for 1 it doubles the price of the fairs I.e. $211 one way then becomes $422 for two people.
Even when I click through to the next luggage stage the price is still doubled.

    Does it get reduced later?
Also, I'm booking for my wife and myself so should the the fair be deducted or something??

    • The $211 fare is already half price, that's why it's $422 for two people. If $211 was the regular fare to japan I'd be there every second month!

      • OK, I kinda figured but thought I'd ask. So is $1100 return for 2 a decent price or can you get better?

        • +2

$550 per person is pretty cheap….

        • About as good as it gets. We're going to south korea over easter and it's $1100 each, not for two and it's pretty much next door to japan.

        • @slknv:

Cool. Thanks for the replies. Will book!

        • yeah, jump on it - just booked my flights too, melbourne-osaka may-june for 1130 return :) Some seats already selling out (friday/saturday nights mel-osaka), my brother and gf was going to fly to osaka the day after we are, but the flights just sold out - so now they're coming on our flight on a thursday.

Now to see if I can get time off work…

  • Booked it for me and my GF near the end of June, prices were reasonable considering the return date was outside the sale window (seemed to still be marked as valid?)
19th-26th of June to Tokyo from Sydney

First time in Japan so excited! Hoping that some other Oz Bargainers post some cheap places to stay ;)

  • Anyone booked the flights with any extras? bundles? vouchers? meals? entertainment? which ones do we need?

    • It really depends on your own preference/who is travelling i.e. adults or kids.

We usually take our own food and get the entertainment for the kids. We also pre-select our seats as we have kids so we want to make sure we're all together.

If it's just adults travelling I would take your own iPad/tablet to save money on entertainment.

  • +2

Has anyone noticed a massive price increase since yesterday? A lot of flights area at least 30% more, with a smaller selection.

Baggage has increased from $30 for 15kg, $35 for 20 which was consistent between flights. Now it's up to $55 for 20kg. Even their 'packages' with meals / bonus points have gone up by $20.

Totally kills the deal for what I wanted.

    • indeed, now the cheapest I can find form melb to tokyo is around 1600 for 2 (800 each), I dont know if still worth it

    • It's because the promotional seats 2for1 for that flight on that day have sold out. My parents and sister booked for May 29, 2 hours later when my brother wanted the same flight it had sold out and was double the price. Deals like this you kinda need to book ASAP for the dates you want or risk them selling out, especially for busy periods like weekend flights.

  • There are a lot of nice places to rent on trip advisor if people are looking for somewhere to stay.

  • d

  • Do you guys notice that in the Jetstar 2 for 1 Japan sale page under the Melbourne to Tokyo it clearly specify "Direct Flight only"? When I tried to book all of them are with 1 stop though :\

  • Check this out for some cheap docomo Wi-Fi hotspots (roughly 150,000 locations throughout Japan) 972JPY for one week or 1,404JPY for three weeks.
