Pro tip: The new FlyBuys readers bolted to the top right corner of the screen on the self-checkouts are optical readers capable of reading barcodes off phone screens.

Ive always wondered what they were, thought they were video recorders or something

    • Is this assuming no screen protectors or tempted glass protectors? Or can they do them too?

      • I have a z2 with a tempered glass screen protector, so I can confirm it works fine :)

    • Those readers are camera-based as opposed to normal barcode scanner that use laser-based reader. It requires camera-based system to recognise barcode on phone screen.

      • That's not correct. I have a laser scanner sitting here at my desk, and no problem reading the barcode off my computer screen or my iPhone (which has a reflective screen protector on it).

Barcode scanners work by detecting the white space between the black lines. If the screen resolution is not sufficient or the bacode image is inadequate (too small or blurred), then this could be the reason the barcode can't be read by a laser scanner. A screen that doesn't have a high enough resolution may not be correctly representing the narrow bars causing inability to read.

If a barcode is scanned as an image, this can also cause problems scanning the barcode as the barcode image won't have straight lines which can cause pixelation.

The barcode in the image on this listing is good enough to be read… though (very) older scanners or poorly configured scanners may have problems.

        • If you have a look at the inside of your barcode scanner you can see a small camera lens in addition to the laser reader.

        • @phynnd: sorry, not the case - there is no camera in my scanner (Honeywell Hyperion 1300g). a linear image scanner - these things are good old technology - pretty typical handheld scanners, that have been around since before camera technology was cheap enough to put everywhere.

        • +1

@braddsey: I stand corrected. I always thought that was the case :)

        • Could you try scanning an AMOLED screen.
I have had problems getting my AMOLED screen to scan but notice that my wife’s phone with a IPS screen has no issues.

    • +1

I think they are doing a gradual roll out to stores before they update their phone apps so you can scan your flybuys off it instead of taking around the card.

The scanner is basically a camera to take a photo and analyse the data instead of a scanning laser based barcode reader (which works very well for reflected light off paper, etc but basically doesn't work at all for backlit screens). Upgrading the self checkout machines themselves is probably not possible so they have to bolt on an additional reader.

      • +1

All stores were finished in December.

    • +15

I use an app called "Beep'nGo" on my S5 (Android) which can take a picture of any barcode, or just manually type it in and then it transmits it to the laser based scanner.

I don't carry around any loyalty cards as they are all scanned into the app (across multiple devices) and you can scan it at any checkout without the need for these camera based scanners to be installed by the shop.

I also regularly download the coupon pics from OzBargain directly on my phone and then transmit to the self service checkouts at Woolies, Coles, Big W etc using the app.

I even put my phone in the grocery scanner at a normal checkout when the person asks for my everyday rewards card and before they can finish saying "oh that won't worrrr" it beeps and I'm done :)

      • +4

What do you mean by "it transmits it to the laser based scanner"

        • +1

haven't used it. but i believe it would flash the screen, laser scanners work by sensing the pulses of light as the laser scans across the bar-code. these don't work on a phone screen because it is not reflective, but the phone could imitate the pulses.

        • +3

Event Cinemas can scan the barcode off my phone when I book online and have to go collect tickets from the counter. How does that work then?

        • -1

@uggugg: they have updated readers that are compatible

      • It's possible that the higher contrast OLED screen allows it to work on some readers? But for the most part, screens won't work on readers not designed for them.

      • Some of the fancier Samsung phones (like my Note 3) have a built-in light source that sends pulses of light to imitate the reflection of a laser bar code scanner. Works pretty well, but have had a few POS that wouldn't scan.

        • +1

It uses the IR blaster. Actually pretty clever.

      • Maybe you have to set the brightness close to the right end?

      • Is there an iOS equivalent?

        • +1

There are plenty but none that will specifically work where others won't.

        • +1

          This one works.

I use this one and confirm that everyday rewards works on the self checkout in woolworths.

          https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/stocard-loyalty-cards/id4445…

        • Not with laser scanners.

          • Several stores still use outdated scanner technologies (laser or flatbed scanners instead of image scanners). These scanners unfortunately cannot read smartphone displays.
      • So with this app, you just take a photo of the back of your loyalty card with the barcode on it, and just use that instead of the cards?

If the photo size is bigger than the physical card, does that affect it?

That would be great if you can do it with all cards - I have so many I have one wallet for the food/coffee ones, and one for the non-food ones (I get a LOT of freebies when my birthday comes around….)

      • +1

Thank you for recommending the app. It works!

  • -1

So I'm assuming I couldn't do a heap of these at once as assistant approval?

    • I'm guessing so

    • +1

I was holding two bars to check out but decided against it when it came up with approval required.

  • Good spotting OP!

  • +12

How long until Coles requests this to be removed? ;)

    saves image

    • +2

Depends on how quick some greedy users do something silly in store to ruin it for the rest

    • You win!

  • +5

Shame that its Coles not Woolworths… Coles requires staff approval for coupon, and Wollworths doesnt

  • +3

I self scan copouns at coles self serve regularly and it never asks for authorisation

    • i think the point is because if you are just buying chocolate the total will be $0.00 and the self service needs staff to check it's right maybe. if you bought the chocolate and a drink it'd be fine.

      • This is not true. (Some) Coles stores require staff auth regardless of type of voucher and total amount (discount, flybuys points, etc)

  • +3

Dude, wish you posted earlier. Just left coles and it took all my will power not to buy a time or for 99c.
I would have got it if it was free.
A huge thumbs up from me

    One voucher per QUALIFYING PURCHASE

So u can buy 20 bars and have printed out 20 coupons and get them all for free right?

    • If you can find some checkout operator willing to do it as 20 separate transactions, then yes. Good luck :)

      • -5

It doesn't say the purchases have to be separate transactions

        • +1

Well try it out and get back to us then.

        • +2

@Cardz: Why can't you try it out?

        • They do have to be separate.

    • dont forget, find 20 different checkout operators

      • +13

Free Cadbury chocolate at Coles? Hello diabetes!

  • +1

    mmmmmm chocolate

  • +5

Excellent we can get our chocolate back that they're stealing by reducing the weight of the bars but keeping the price the same.

  • Are you sad because Cadbury chocolate blocks got smaller again? No problem! Here at OzBargain, we have the cure - free chocolate bars!

    Welcome back, Diabetes :)

    http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2015/02/cadbury-is-shrinking-it…

  • I'm guessing they have been reduced in price because of the amount of customers angry with the drop in quantity and the same pricing!

    • +4

Or it could be the same 50% off medium bars that runs every 3 weeks or so?

    • -5

Cadbury is facing a boycott at the moment because they support Islam. Probably why they've dropped their quantity. It's all related.

      • +3

So wait, you think they're facing a boycott, so because of this you think they're going to offer worse value for money?

I'm trying to work out your thought process behind this, if there is any!

  • +3

Can confirm that this works, but only if you buy them individually.
The guy at coles was nice enough to do 3 transactions for me though.

    • Cool! What did you tell the attendant so that they were willing to do three transactions?

      • +10

Well I just went straight to the attendant at self-checkout holding the 3 bars and voucher and said "hi i have this voucher which supposedly gets me $1 off for entering a competition and I noticed your chocolate bars are $1, can you scan it for me and see if it works? :)"

So I handed him one, and when it worked, I said, ok thanks, can we please do it with the other 2 bars?
I guess he felt locked in at that point.

        • Might give it a try!! Thanks!! Thanks thanks OP!! Awesome deal!

        • When I tried out this deal the self -checkout attendant said "oh one of those vouchers" and took it off me after authorising it. No opportunity to use it more than once.

        • +2

Can I ask, are you male or female? This may have been the reason why he was so accommodating :)

        • Also, did you have the voucher printed or was it on your phone?

        • +7

@froodh: Use your phone next time! :)… but maybe he'll take your phone.

        • +1

@imissbeans: I would just print out a few, but I had printed 1.

        • +3

@Spackbace: Haha, well I am female but was looking very average so I think it's more about whether they are in a bad mood, and how you approach them

        • @itsmemeow: thanks for the tip!!

        • @illumination: great idea. i'll try that

        • +4

          @itsmemeow:
He may still have thought you were cute. Jeans and a plain T shirt is plenty for most guys. IE guys ideas of when girls look hot and what girls think can be very different things.

        • +3

          @illumination:

The lady at the self checkout was not impressed when she saw the coupon on my phone. She hesitated for a while and then said "Can you delete that from your phone after I put your transaction through?" I gave her a big smile and deleted it right in front of her.
I'm putting the coupon back in my phone now big grin

        • @ST:

Is that because it's an iPhone? Jokes.

So inefficient isn't it.. all it causes is you more effort to have to re-download it. hahaha

        • @itsmemeow:
Awww shite. I visited three separate COLES' on my way home from work today, for a total of 3 bars…
NOW you tell me that if I'd only dressed in drag for the day, I coulda' tripled that booty?

        • @GnarlyKnuckles: Haha, well I'm sure there are girls who work there too, so drag may not be entirely necessary … but that's your choice

  • +5

Shirley no one pays full price

    • +15

I am serious, and don't call me Shirley.

      • I love you guys

    • +6

Well no one is even paying half price now with this, Shirley.

  • +1

Loaded it into one of those card apps but couldn't get it to scan so just typed the code in. Free chocolate
    Thanks oZb

    • Thanks for the tip, just entered the code at self checkout too!!

    • +2

Does it still require the authorisation if typed in?

      • Unfortunately yes! But the attendant didn't even look and just approved it without even knowing what it was.

  • +1

    Worked! Total $0.00
