Cathay Pacific Chinese New Year Special to Japan from $751 Seoul $753 Taipei $733

1070

Just saw this after I booked with Jetstar 2 for 1 and it turned our that this one is a bit better in value after all the add-ons. For example I paid $1465 for 2 people ADL-NRT return with two 20kg luggages and one 15kg, no meals only some inflight voucher and entertainment and only some seat selections.

This offer includes changing travel dates, food service, entertainment, seat selection and don't need to buy the "bundle" from $1516.

My first time travelling to Japan but next time definitely going to check Cathay Pacific's promo before booking.

Soooo sorry for myself now:(

Wow why did you flights come to so much?
For two I got 1040 from melb with luggage.
I wouldnt pay another 500 for these but if it had come to 1400 it would have been worth the extra.

    • Yeah prices have gone up a bit. Either flights have sold out or they've jacked up the 2-for-1 prices since yesterday, most return from Melbourne are $650ish bare minimum.

      • Damn! Sorry you missed out on the cheaper fares!

    • I guess it's because I'm travelling from adelaide.
$302 adl-nrt, $285 nrt-adl, $1174 for 2. There were some cheaper dates but the stopovers were too long.
15kg baggage $47.5 to tokyo, 20kg baggage $56 times 2 back from tokyo.
      entertainment $9 times 2 for one person & seat selection $7 times 4 on cairns-tokyo and tokyo-cairns.
in-flight vouchers $9 times 4 on cairns-narita and narita-cairns to buy water just in case.
credit card payment $50 (for complimentary insurance).

      • same here, i also bought adelaide to tokyo through jetstar's 2-for-1 promotion
i checked cathay on that day, the promo was not up yet.
so don't feel sorry too much.

and yes, cathay deal is much better.
however, i convinced myself that the ticket i bought was end of nov to 7th of DEC.
Cathay's promo ends on end of nov, it makes me feel a little better

Note that you'll have to stop over in Hong Kong if you fly with Cathay. I had a quick look and total travel time from Sydney including layover ranges from around 18 to 24 hours.
Just something to keep in mind as it can be a pretty long time to be in transit.

    • +1

hong kong airport is quite awesome, heaps of shops, places to eat etc
also if you have amex (a high level one), there should be places u can go for free

also u can try to time it and leave for japan the next day, transport from airport is cheap and try to find a cheap hotel or tough it out!

    • do you think that a stopover at hong kong on the return trip for like a month would make the prices much higher?

      • +1

usually it doesn't, stop overs in hk is permitted once on ur ticket
as long as the dates u leave are not peak should be fine, I do it all the time when going to Europe and japan

        • +1

is OCLP in hong kong ends yet?
if not, i don't recommend you go there

moreover, if you are going to japan, you will feel disapintted about hong kong
japan is much better i am sure you will love japan

        • +1

@frozenkuku: The last of the OCLP occupied areas were cleared late last year. For the uninitiated, OCLP = Occupy Central with Love and Peace.

As for your other comment, I have been to both countries on separate occasions and having experienced Japan first, I do agree that HK can be fairly underwhelming in comparison.

With that said, I still think a visit to HK is worthwhile, but perhaps plan it so you visit HK first (ie on the inbound leg) then Japan, not the other way around.

    • Shortest I found was just over 14 hours :)

    • No for the adl-nrt the total stopover is about 2 hours and 4 hours for the return.

    • Try to search by multi flight, I just tried from SYD - HKH - TYO - SYD it cost around $792, which is the best bargain I have ever get! Qantas with the same cost around $1600.

  • Hong Kong is around $653 return from Melbourne.

  • these are going up by $400 as I look at them.. they'll be gone very soon I'd say …

Cathay Pacific is one of the safest airlines around the world, also it was founded by an American and an Australian, strictly speaking not a typical asian airline.

      • +1

What is your "typical Asian airline"?

I've been on Japan Airlines, Korean Air, Asiana, Singapore Airlines… All have been top knotch with excellent service.

Just because one or two budget airlines from South East Asia had tragedies doesn't mean the typical Asian airline is "bad".

        • What I meant by typical is the ones that he/she referred to as "high-risk" airlines (have had recent tragedies), at the same time, they are budget airlines from some of the asian countries by coincidence. All the airlines you mentioned are very good and reputable airlines (and not limited to the ones you mentioned either) and I flew with some of them, their services and cockpit crews were fantastic.
Does it sound better to you now?

To be honest, I personally wouldn't fly with Malaysia airline, Air Asia and Transasia.

That deal is a Perth to Hong Kong deal, how is that a dupe?

      • Because it is the same sale. Perth- HKG is just an example.

        • +3

Doesn't matter though, different titles so different deals. Same with all the grocery deals.

+1 for op being so unselfish and putting this up for others despite not being able to book themselves!

    • +1

      My pleasure!
ALthough my husband had to put up with me saying I made such a bad decision.

      • +3

Don't sweat it. It'll be just long forgotten detail once you land and experience Japan! It's an awesome, awesome place! I'm sure you've love as as much as I did when I travelled there! Would love to go back, but the timing isn't quite right for me to take advantage of this deal. :(

        • +1

Thanks it makes me feel better. I heard positive comments from many people during their stays and most of them would like to go again. I think I have already been thinking about going back next year! haha !

    • That's alright not time we know where to look and book.
which date are you going? Maybe we could be travel buddies:)

      • 31st oct to 14th nov. 2 of my friends booking through cathay now so sad..

cant wait to go akihabara for figurines. First time wooo

        • Very good time to go as you can see all the autumn colours.
Unfortunately both of us can't take leaves during that time of the year.

        • @a1169377: yea thats gonna be good. Gonna go tokyo osaka n kyoto. Cant wait

  • Thanks, was just about to buy China Southern to Seoul from Melbourne for $900~, much happier with Cathay and cheaper to boot. Lucky I procrastinated as this deal wasn't on a few days ago!

  • Its been hard finding those min prices. Especially around the school holidays.

    • -3

Of course there's no specials on school holidays. Noob.

  • I guess from SYD to Seoul isn't $753? :(

    • +1

      $770 from SYD

    • Yep some good dates early august

  • I'm after tickets to seoul. However the ones that are 700 ish requires a stop in hk and Taiwan. If u don't want to stop in Taiwan goes right up to $1000 ish

    • +1

Can I ask how your getting Taiwan included as a stopover? I'm just getting one stopover in Hk.

      • It depends on the dates. I put in 29 April return 10 May from Perth to sydney. Select cheapest flight which is 700 something . And it goes through hk and taiwan

  • Nice one - $661 return ADL to HKG

  • Anyone know how to book flights to Japan with multi-day stopover in HK?

    • +1

you will need to select "Multi-city / stopover" at the homepage

  • Click on Multi-city/Stopover and add in your countries.

  • +1

plugged in the same dates on the website and skyscanner. Ended up with better prices through skiddoo

    • Some of the best deals you see from skyscanner are in American dollars, just be aware of it.

    • yeah its about $25 cheaper on skyscanner.

    • -4

skiddoo? never heard of that airline

      • +1

        I think it's a comparing and flight booking website like cheapflights.com.au, byojets.com, webjets.com.au etc..

        • +1

          ah ok.

          I didnt know that.

    • Hey Ryan,

Tried PMing you but you don't accept them. Offtopic but I used your ING Direct referral code a while ago for the $250 Iconic Voucher. Just wanted to confirm that you actually received your bonus :-)

      Let me know!

      • Hey!

I didnt get your PM, thanks so much!

Yet to receive the email but I will let you know when i do :)

        • Please check your spam folder too :-)

  • Bought Jetstar 2 for 1 deal Syd -> Osaka return with extras + baggage for $1400. If this deal was on, would definitely pay the extra $100 (if I got the dates I wanted). Ah well, just have to live with it. Such is the life of a bargain hunter :-(

    • +3

But you have $100 … Goes towards accommodation. Good job!

      • … but no clothes. unless he literally lives out of his handluggage.

        • ??? By clothes, do you refer to check in baggage? If you do then I did pay for the carry on baggage (and other things) in jetstar which is why the fare came to $1400. The original fare was $1083 for two return tickets.

    • +1

This deal makes you wait 6-7hrs in transit. I rather fly the Jetstar deal unless youre planning on staying in HK.

      • Agreed, I'm in the situation of having already booked with Jetstar but given the partner doesn't sleep well on planes taking a direct flight Cairns -> Osaka on a dreamliner during the day more preferable than a 6 hour wait in HK…

  • Thanks OP.

  • What dates is this deal for?

  • How come all the flights takes up to 20+hrs to get to Japan.
I was through some dates during April/ May
In that case the Jetstar deal is much better since its only 1 stop and takes 13hrs total.

    • See my comment here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/182100#comment-2555948

Basically, Cathay Pacific's main hub is Hong Kong, so pretty much all of their flights will involve a stop over at HKIA.

      • Depending on where you are travelling from, if you depart from Adelaide, the stopovers would be approximately 2-4 hours.

  • Peeps, travel noob here need some help.

My departure date needs to be quite flexible, if I book then change the date, do I have to pay the fare differences + fee (esp. fare differences since this is a special fare)?

    Thanks all!

    • Have a look at the fare conditions here.

Looks like you'll have to pay any difference in fare and possiblt re-booking fee depending on fare type.

  • Gee Gee Gee Gee I'm going to Seoul 30th Oct -> 11th Nov.

    Happy birthday to me
