SONY 70Inch 3D FHD 100HZ Smart TV KDL70W850B $2000 @ JB Hi-Fi

1400

I was looking at a new TV and was really only looking at size and picture quality for general viewing.
I ended up purchasing this Sony model for $2000 bucks from JB Mt Druitt. I understand it's not UHD or OLED but I thought $2k for 70 inches, 100HZ, Smart 3D, 2 pair Glasses and the Sony brand and it was a great deal!!
Got it home and it looks great. Haven't got into hooking it up to WiFi or looking at 3D, but seems great value for Foxtel and Digital TV.
Please don't tell me if you have picked it up cheaper:-;.

I have that model in 60inch. Seems like a good price, you should be happy with the tv. Although same as you I haven't used the 3D yet and I've had mine for around 7 months.

    • +27

are the pixels the size of potatoes?

      • Why would you ask that? You can have 1080 projectors blown up to 150 inch diagonal or more. It is all down to how close you sit to the screen.

      • +4

Depends how big your potatoes are, freak!

      • -3

By that size it should be a bit pixelated, also depends on distance.

This is an awesome TV as I bought one as well but from Good Guys at Castle Hill.
Bought it last month and paid $1960 with $100 store credit voucher (which I used for extra 3D glasses)
So in fact the TV was $1860

Go in and see Hamel. Tell him Mark P sent you and want to match price as mine.
The $100 store credit is now over as that was a Global Good Guys thing which ended.

Extra $40 but still good AND if you see it cheaper within 30 days after you buy, go back and they will refund you the difference.

I am NOT associated with Good Guys.

    • +6

I love good guys price beat. I bought something full price from good guys, knowing it was cheaper elsewhere. Came back in 1 hour later and took up 30 day price beat. Because I didn't haggle on original price the refunded difference was quite large.

      • Why not price beat originally? They have competitors prices listed on their computer system.

        • +6

Because they said they will only just beat it by $1 at time of purchase whereas the 30 day price beat is 110% of difference.

        • +1

They refund 120% of difference. Doesn't seem to apply until after you've bought it.

        • +1

@fruxo: sorry you are right it was 120%. But yes they were firm on the fact that it was only after you purchase the product.

        • so doing the the price match after you buy it gives you an extra 20% on the savings… thats awesome.!! :-)

          20% of $200 =$20

        • No, 20% reduction on the difference amount.
          Ha! You corrected yourself.

        • +12

          @aussieaubs: 20% of $200 is not $20.

        • @fruxo:
i never heard of this but this seems interesting! can you give me an example so i can understand easier plz

by the way, is this limited to electronic goods only?

        • +4

          @howard22:

Purchase item for $200 (let's say an electric toothbrush). You see it at Myer for $100. That's a $100 difference. Take it back to Good Guys get them to honour their 30 day price policy to get 120% of the difference (ie. 1.2 x $100 = $120). All up, it costs you $200 - $120 = $80.

This applies to anything they sell in store as far as I'm aware.

        • @alvian:

          correct - its $40

        • @aussieaubs:
          20% of 200 is 40

          EDIT: apologies… Page wasn't refreshed

Mark P as in Pace? Just a wild guess…

Didnt OP say not to tell it if you got it cheaper?

  • Still +1 you :)

  • same price during the Boxing Day sale.
However, be aware that this particular model has problem with radial banding.
Hope you got a good one, this is like lottery.

    • Not necessarily helpful, most commentors are from the US and their TVs come from Mexico where as our one's come from Malaysia. Can't always assume their problems will bleed over to us, but I guess checking in-store won't hurt.

      • I have this model and it has the radial banding issue, it's honestly too big to go through the hassle of returning it.

      • it's a problem here as well, apparently a few people got it during the boxing day sale:

        http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2367157

and here, poor guy trying to fix it:
"Ok. As posted on another tread I've received TWO Sony tvs. The first had radial banding very noticeable. The second I didnt notice until 3 days later when looking at a blue sky on a PS3 game."

        http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2359316

      • Just out of interest, my replacement Samsung 65" uhd ( lighting storm killed the old one) was made in Mexico. I didn't know they made TVs there

  • +2

God damnit! This is the TV I was after… Lying JB salesman told me not a chance a store in Australia had stock left, all went at boxing day. Just got a smaller Samsung for the same price delivered today :(

  • +5

Will this one hear me whisper sweet nothings to the housemaid like the samsung tvs?

  • cant believe that i bought the samsung 6 65 inch* H6400 for $2500 last July!!!
    Damn it!!!

  • It was advertised at $2697 on the ticket and DSE had it for $2297 at Penrith store. I was surprised to get JB down so much….how much are these guys making on TV's??

    • +6

      Are we related??

My mum once mentioned I had a long lost cousin but unsure if he was a 'wad' or a 'bottom'

  • +2

4K is a bit overated when there's so little content ;)

    • 4K Might become the betamax of the flat screen tv era.

  • +7

Be warned, this Sony TV has a lot of problems, it has terrible banding problems where huge (what look like) watermarks appear on a light screen. They are permanent. Its image quality is also much worse than pretty much every other TV on the market, save kmart specials. Reviews don't pertain to this, but if you go in and compare it to like televisions, it is clearly inferior. You are better off spending the extra $1000 on the 4k model, which has none of these problems.

      • +8

Oh yeah, Im sure a Sony salesperson would bag their own EOL product they are desperately trying to shift. Says personal experience and every AV forum on the internet.

Oh and Im sorry Channel 10 sacked you, they should have got rid of that old looney instead.

  • How do I get them to match the price? Show them the picture of the receipt you uploaded on my phone?

  • Nice deal, great series in Sony.

  • Leighzor,
You can show them photo of my receipt or if you are in Sydney try JB at MtDruitt, a young bloke named Bayden looked after me and his service was fantastic and he looked after me on price.I live an hour drive from "the druitt" but it was worth the trip.

    • Thanks, I'm in Melbourne unfortunately :( But I'll try tomorrow at a store and see how I go!

    • Can confirm they'll match: I printed out the picture, told them my friend just got one yesterday with this price and they matched it no questions asked within about 2mins

  • +2

So many typical ozbargainers recommending 4k instead /sigh. You DONT NEED 4k YET

    • +5

but the average tv lasts 3 -5 years , you might want 4k at some stage between now and then

    • +7

Sad to say they we barely need HD (1080P/I) with the state of free to air television in Australia.

Not that I have foxtel but the fact they charge for HD as an extra in 2015 is mind boggling.

Streaming services such as Stan will hopefully help the situation for HD, but with the BS changes to the NBN model to reduce fibre coverage I doubt we will see much use of possible Ultra HD sources via Netflix or other providers.

I've still got my Hitachi 1080p lcd model from 2007, keeping it until it dies as despite the great prices there is no incentive for me to upgrade.

    • You are right, but the linked TV is such a flawed set, and the 4K model with a different panel is so much better, you might as well go for it.

  • +2

They keep discounting this TV for a reason guys… It has major radial banding issues.

    Google it.

I ended up going with a 60 inch 7 series Samsung for this very reason.

    • +3

I have this TV, no banding. The larger the TV it seems the higher the instances of banding regardless of brand probably due to difficulties creating uniform panels the larger you go.

Had to try three Series 8 Samsungs before I got one which didn't have vertical banding.

      Google it.

Lots of big TVs have banding.

      • +2

        BandGate?

      • I think anyone's best bet when they're buying a big TV is to mentally prepare to have it replaced. Ask the person selling it to you what will happen if there's banding. They'll tell you they've had none returned but ask them their policy anyway eg pickup/delivery etc. If you get one that's fine then you win.

This is pretty much irrespective of brand.

    • What do you mean by banding issues? I have this TV as well and haven't noticed anything wrong yet :/

    • Nope, not my set. It's not perfect, but no banding. Actually, I've never seen a perfect consumer-grade LCD TV set.

  • +1

I have this tv, it's big on size but on the lower end of quality especially for Sony.
My Samsung 64" plasma was far superior.

      • +2

CRT's are actually superior for playing games. Most go to 100hz and they have 0 input lag.

      • +4

Living in the past perhaps but the fact is plasma blows these lcd tvs out of the water in terms of picture quality.

      • Lol, in before someone says LED is so thin it must be better than Plasma.

    • I had read one review that wasn't flattering regarding picture quality but for 2 grand I thought I would take the risk. I also thought only paying 2 grand means I can get rid of it in 2 or 3 years when OLED come down in price or 4K starts kicking in.

      • in 2 or 3 years when OLED come down in price

Did you mean 5-6 years? :)

        • It's sub 4k US for a 55" now - we're up to generation 2, 2 more generations and they'll be semi-common.

        • @hamwhisperer: I was thinking of 70" at $2k. But yes, they're definitely coming down… unless manufacturers skip FHD to concentrate on 4K OLED. If they do, the prices will probably remain high for a bit longer.

      • Anything over 720p looks fine but SD television can be pretty brutal at less than 3m. When you start getting this big you need to really consider your viewing distance. I'm pretty sure 4k wouldn't look any better at that size with SD content.

    • No crap your plasma was superior :( thank god I got one of the last ones.

  • You can buy OLED tvs?

    • +2

Well.. you can admire them at CES…

    • +1

Yes, LG has a 55 inch set for about $3.5k. The blacks are amazing, but its only 1080p. That said it blows all the other 1080p sets out of the water in terms of image quality. Its about the same as most brand name 4k sets in terms of image quality, but its blacks are obviously better and the colours are pretty vibrant.

      • The OLED TVs now are pretty amazing. A 70" would buy a car or three though.
Dolby Vision looks like it's another step ahead of OLED, but that's probably another 5-8 years or so away before it becomes affordable (at 70"), and there's a good amount of content encoded with it.

        http://www.theverge.com/2014/1/6/5276934/dolby-vision-the-fu…

  • It is OP's first post - please be nice and don't give heart attack with too many +ve

  • I reckon if you get one without radial banding issues its a good deal…for me it wasnt worth the risk after reading aal the threads.

  • I'm confused if good guys price beat by 120% only after purchase why get them to price match up front. Just buy and then come back the next day with the better price and get the better cash back.

    • I would ask the same day (you may find they may not accept if stock runs out.

so order online and ask for a refund at store before pickup.

  • Great TV, huge size small price.
Would have jumped on this 12 months ago but I can't spend $2k on a non 4K TV, not in 2015.

  • What would be better image quality, this or http://www.thegoodguys.com.au/sharp-70-inches177cm-fhd-led-l…

    • Tough one. That's like comparing two turds and asking which one smells better.

    • I can answer that after owning both, the Sony was better but both are bottom of the barrel.

      • even with the radial banding the sony is better image quality?

        • They don't all have radial banding. The best TV in the world with banding will probably be more distracting than an average TV which has good panel uniformity.

  • +4

WARNING WARNING DANGER DANGER WILL ROBINSON!
Now that I have your attention I would like to let you know that you would be better off passing on the 70inch model 70w850b.
I bought one on the boxing day sales, whilst I am happy with the picture quality after fiddling with the settings, my particular set is afflicted by Radial Banding.
Do a quick google search particulary on the AVS forum on this issue.
This model is affected by this issue in a very large number of sets at varying degrees.

Essentially it looks like a big black circle on your back lighting, like a ripple in water.'

The degree of banding in my set is not as significant as others, but I can still notice it.

Just my opinion I hope it helps, do your research you will see what I mean.

  • Sony would be likely to sell the TV section, so good bye sony TV.
I perfer to buy x8500 series with Triluminos tech.

  • -1

Just wait till it goes on sale like 15% off which jb normally do so it would go down heaps more.

  • I have this model. Paid 2799 12 months ago from Costco. No radial banding. The smart function is very slow and avg. Great picture love playing gta5 on it. Havnt tried 3D yet. Which was one of the reason I went for this tv over Samsung as I wanted passive 3D

    • Er, I have this and it has very bad Active 3D.

      • Yup, the two worst things about this TV is its 3D and its smart TV features. So if they're crucial to you I probably wouldn't recommend this. I use a seperate media streamer so don't touch the smart features.

      • I stand correct. I have Sony Bravia 70inch LED 3D R550a
        Didn't read the description right

  • Now you all have me paranoid in regard to radial banding!!!! Mine looks fine. If a product is defective and does not perform to expectations, surely you could all take the TV back for refund/exchange….. It's what I will be doing if I notice it.
