HP Stream 8, $169 Dick Smith (Click & Collect)

540

Not a bad deal for this Windows tablet.

I paid about $115 (inc delivery) for the 7" version from Amazon in the last week… an extra inch screen size / local warranty / AU charger adapter for about $55 more is fairly reasonable and still a good deal.

My Amazon purchase is still "en route" :(

1 year free Office 365 personal subscription included as part of the package.

Please, no whinging about only 1gb ram…. It's been done to death and thrown out already :)

8" tab will also get the full FREE upgrade to Windows 10 once it's released.

EDIT: same price in store according to Zirkaloy

Also, we paid only $99 for Office 2010 (licensed for 3 PCs) earlier on.

Office 365 is like Heroin, IMO: The first one is always Free. :-/

  • Amazing this is nearly the same price I paid for my Kindle.

    • -6

Why would one buy a Kindle, ie, not a color screen, full Android tab of same / larger size (& run
      kindle for Android)?

      • +10

If reading is all you want to do, a Kindle might be better. It's much lighter, has a loooooooong battery life, looks a lot like paper (it's not a bright light shining at your face), and (used to be) cheaper.

      • +1

Because the kindle battery lasts for weeks and you can read it for hours without your eyes feeling like they are about to explode

      • +1

My primary reason was the lack of functionality e.g. no distractions. If I use a proper tablet to read apart from it being worse on the eyes I'm constantly distracted by notifications and temptation to do something other than read.

  • +3

Its the same price in store, and it has been that price at least since the beginning of the week.

  • +4

Just from personal experiences, you'd probably want a keyboard and a mouse, if you want to use your Windows tablet to its full potential. It's not compulsory though. It runs full Office and offers desktop environment but metro apps are lackluster at the moment.

  • +2

Beginning to regret that Amazon grab. This is a good price

    • I feel your pain… delivery scheduled for NEXT Monday!!!

We'll get over it though, there's always a better deal just around the corner… just wait until Win 10 tabs start being released and everywhere want's to clean-house from 8.1 tabs, there will be deals aplenty I guess :)

    • +3

Don't be the 7 " has the same resolution in a smaller lighter thinner size and higher pixel density.

  • So this can run full Windows 8/10.

    Technology advances so fast.

Back in 2000(15 years) Desktop computer's only had

    800Mhz Intel Pentium 3
    256mb ram
    CRT Monitor
    floppy.

    • +2

We now also have smartwatches that are more powerful than the average consumer desktop back then too.

Food for thought, it's better than laptop CPUs from 7 years ago in terms of benchmark.

      • whilst using 85% less power.

      • Single thread rating: 364 (Atom) vs 654 (Core2). Still not there yet.

        • True that, usually single thread is the important one, but the fact that I can compare my old laptop which weighed like 3~4kg to a tablet that size is intriguing at least.

      • So .. what can we expect in the next 5 - 10 yrs? Boggles the mind.. :-)

      • Heh. windows XP volume license key. Pretty sure that's what like, 80% of the world's windows XP users are probably using :)

        • People still use it for "cheap upgrade" to Windows 8.1

      • +1

Oh man, that takes me back… Good ol' FCKGW

        • F*** Gates and Windows, if the internet is to be believed.

    • Back in 2000 ?

Try early 1980's !! We had ibm pcs with 64kb of memory or so in the lab. Fond memories, they worked well too.

    Pity there's no GPS

  • "8" tab will also get the full FREE upgrade to Windows 10 once it's released."

Been announced by Microsoft that every existing legitimate Windows 7/8/8.1 will get a FREE upgrade for the first year..

    • +1

I wonder if for the first year actually refers to first years rental rather than the period of time in which people need to make the upgrade… Given the news of a Windows 365…

      • +2

Pretty sure it's been restated multiple times that the upgrade offer is available for a year, but the OS itself is forever.

        http://blogs.windows.com/bloggingwindows/2015/01/21/the-next…

We announced that a free upgrade for Windows 10 will be made available to customers running Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows Phone 8.1 who upgrade in the first year after launch.*

*Hardware and software requirements apply. No additional charge. Feature availability may vary by device. Some editions excluded. More details at http://www.windows.com.

        • Cheers.. seems so "once a Windows device is upgraded to Windows 10, we will continue to keep it current for the supported lifetime of the device – at no cost."

  • What's battery life like?

  • This one doesn't have 3G or 4G ?

    • No… Only seen that on US models with a free 200mb/month data pack from one of their telcos for the life of the device

      • Okay thanks heaps.

Amazon have the HP Stream 8 4G for US$150.

Would the 4G work in Australia with a telstra sim?

        • +1

I own the HP Stream 8 4G, it works with Telstra and Vodafone.

        • +1

@infekted: Thankyou. That's cool, didn't think it would work. Is that the American one you have?

        • @mmarab:
          Yes bought from Amazon

  • Why is the Acer version in white case W10 with exact same specs costs more?
Same epecs for the Toshiba encore 2 but Tosh is double the price.
this tablet is rather thick and clunky compared say to the Lenovo Mixx 2 and 3. It's even clunkier and thicker and heavier than the Pendo Windows 8 @$149 in Target but that's 16 gigs.

    • Toshiba Encore 2 I think has 2GB RAM, Micro HDMI and also sensors like Accelerometer, Gyroscope and GPS. Baytrail tablets are fairly indistinguishable if you look only at CPU since they are all using similar CPUs. It's ports, sensors, speakers, screen quality and build quality that differs between these tablets.

      • Toshiba Encore 2 only has 1gb of ram, plus I think only the 10inch version has the micro hdmi port.

    • You're better off with the Pendo from Target then :)

  • Could anyone recommend a win 8 tablet with hdmi and a separate usb or dock.

  • Uum paizuri I think you are due for your medication

  • I picked this up yesterday and have been using it non-stop ever since. It has exceeded all my expectations by a very wide margin. It's quite quick in general use for surfing, email, etc. I spend most of my time in desktop mode as well. So far no real major issues, it's a great deal at this price.

Did I miss something or is Amazon cheaper for the U.S. version
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00NSHLVD2/ref=pd_aw_sbs_pc_1?…
    $79 + $8.13 Shipping USD which totals $87.13 USD

    • +2

      size does matter …

    • +1

Yeah, also, some people are not comfortable with getting things from Amazon. It might take a lot of effort if you want to get the tablet fixed, because they are based in America.

    • That's the 7 inch version

  • $149.99 + shipping on Amazon for the EIGHT inch version…

  • I would bite but the specs are a bit too weak for me, I can only imagine that it would struggle for anything more than MS Office. Can anyone confirm how it handles dosbox, Google chrome tabs, 720p video etc?

    • +1

720p mkv streaming from NAS using VLC player is fine. Chrome is fine, just that Microsoft's touchscreen for desktop app is still (well, has room for improvement - basically needs to hold the press when opening the new tab, because that tab is drawn quite small on screen).

Haven't tried dosbox (sorry, don't have the interest to run dosbox on this). Also, I only have HP stream 7, but specs is close to Stream 8.

Just a relative comparison. The intel Atom NUC (NOT the intel Celeron NUC), with a much weaker CPU than this, despite putting 2GB and a 64GB SSD in that NUC, struggles even with Intenet Explorer (this tablet performs much better). The CPU in this tablet is closer to the intel Celeron NUC (based on geekbench score). Basically, the CPU is better than iPhone 5/5C, Moto G, slightly better than Nexus 7 (2013), but not as good as Nexus 5 (snapdragon 800).

I think the price for HP Stream 7 is okay, not sure I want to spend $169 on Stream 8 (but I am biased as I have a ZBox and a Stream 7). Still feel Microsoft have a lot of room for improvement on the OS level for tablets.

I do want to complain about the headphones jack, when you use a decent pair of headphones, the constant background noise is really bad. Using those el cheapo eBay / fake $1 iPhone earphones seems a lot better (but what you really want to hear is quite soft and lacks details).

  • Can use DROP20 code to get $20 off today

    • +2

No you can't. Unfortunately it's excluded

  • is the office 365 linked to this machine? or can it be deactivated on this HP and use on another machine? thx

    • It is Office 365 Personal… you can move around from device to device

      • does it comes as a code in the package?

        • +1

No, it lets you sign up to the service to a particular e-mail account of your choosing, but you don't get a code.

  • I noticed a circle when typing. Are there any wireless pens that are compatible with the HP Stream?

    • Any capacitive stylus will work. They're "finger-fat" though. You won't be able to use an active stylus (Wacom, N-trig, etc) with it unfortunately.

      • Using the capacitive pens, would you be able to take handwritten notes?

        • It's more like finger-writing, so it'll really only work if you write large text.

If you want to do handwritten notes, an active stylus is way, way, waaaaay better. The Dell Venue 8 Pro has an active stylus option. I paid about $200 for a new refurb last year and $29 for an active stylus. Alternatively the Asus Vivotab Note 8 comes with a Wacom stylus which inks better than the Dell one, but the screen isn't as nice.
