if you want 2gb ram get the ASUS VivoTab 8

      • Any ideas about 4gb ram? Apart from European ThinkPad 8's.

        • surface pro

        • +5

Most of the Baytrail CPUs are limited to 2GB RAM because of Intel, I think. So it actually would be better to look at non-Atom CPU tablets if you want something with 4GB RAM, that would give you more option.

Anyways, ThinkPad 10 as well, but that thing cost you around the same as the Surface Pro.

@tds: @tds: Uh yeah sure but that's very far removed from this device as it's er … useable for things other than light browsing, email etc. I don't know about video decoding on these but presumably they can playback 1080p video.

And it doesn't have the budget price attached of course.

I mean to be frank whilst these things are very attractively priced you are getting a device that is well … compromised shall we say as far as performance.

        • @AznMitch:

Intel is a factor. It might also be that Microsoft charges more for Windows with Bing running on > 2GB, so not to cannibalize their higher end profits.

        • @RedHab: Possibly, but if you look at the CPU information, the instruction set is 64 bits, but it only supports up to 2GB, or even 1GB.

          For example:

          http://ark.intel.com/products/80275/Intel-Atom-Processor-Z37…
          http://ark.intel.com/products/80274/Intel-Atom-Processor-Z37…

        • @RedHab: It might be reverse, actually. Microsoft did put a price limit on With Bing version. It might be that Intel is selling the CPU supporting 4GB with higher price that they cannot make it for With Bing version with 4GB RAM. To be fair, the reason why we are seeing these cheap tablet is that Intel is subsidising the Atom CPUs heaps.

down vote for telling the truth? .. what a world!

      • I believe most of the negs could be as it runs Windows 8.1 with Bing, not Windows RT :)

        • -2

they don't get my point or refuse to face reality: it was like Windows RT but it is now on a X86 hardware. the tablet is best use like Windows RT powered machine..

        • @jackau: From the reviews on Amazon it is not RT its actually a "PC".

        • -2

          @sentinel:
it is a PC, full fetch PC, but what I meant was and IS:
Desktop Programs will RUN SLOWLY AND Struggle because it only has 1GB RAM!
hence impact on the usability of all desktop programs.

        • +2

@jackau: You don't get these type of tablets and expect them to run like your desktop. Just expect them to do what netbooks did and be patient.

I wouldn't get a 1GB Windows Tablet because I'd want to spend little bit more to get something with 2GB RAM as well. I think tablets last long like a laptop per se, so buying something decent goes a long way. At the same time, these things, with 1GB RAM, are at really decent price.

I've found few videos on 1GB RAM, 16GB storage space budget Windows tablet.

          RT App Experience: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvNs3jD6Xyw
He's saying that Windows apps experience might be awful on that tablet because it only has 16GB storage space, which would not apply to this tablet (32GB).

          Desktop Experience: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8zEcx4wbuE
It runs excel, words, powerpoint fluently, there are lags definitely, but it looks usable. He's complaining more about the 16GB storage space on this, which wouldn't apply much to this as well.

MS did optimise the Windows 8.1 OS really well for tablets. Even then you pretty much get what you pay for, but it doesn't look that bad in my personal opinion.

Also, I think people negged you because there were a lot of comments like yours on any Windows tablet deal that had 1GB RAM.

All these awesome deals on windows tablets :)
I think this is better then the HP stream 8 it has stereo speakers

hopefully teh stream 7 will come this week and will be good :)

    • +1

      apparently has Dolby Digital Plus

  • -1

It is more expensive than HP Stream 8 which was $145.34 on 14 February and can still be bought for $149 when the code DROP20 applied.

    • I wish DROP20 could work on HP Stream 8, but it doesn't. It's excluded.

      • -1

Didn't notice this. Strange that it is excluded.
Could be bought yesterday with 14% discount though. But after some thought I decided not to buy.

  • Thanks mate picked one up.

    If only was 10"

  • So…am I seeing this right.. the Toshiba Encore 2 doesn't have Blutooth. Will have to give it a miss.

    • +1

Official specs from the Toshiba website state that the WT8-B32CN does have support for BT 4.0.

      • Awesome, guess theres no reason not to get one. Ordered.

  • Strange my encore 1 had two gig of ram. Cost more than double though.

    • +13

      Cost more than double though.

So not very strange then? :)

  • +2

Would jump on this if it was the write edition

  • That's very cheap for a computer, remind me of the good old days of netbook.
I am just wondering what will you do with this machine normally? Web browser/facebook/email?
If that's the case why not android tablet instead?

  • Have the Encore 1, works well but is a massive fingerprint magnet. I'm a bit skeptical of the performance on the Encore 2, seeing as the Encore 1 only just gets by with double the ram. I would recommend waiting for a special on the Encore 1 (they're quite common, and I got mine from DSE for 226 AUD shipped last year), or any other equivalent Win8.1 tablet (if you have the budget), since they come with full versions of MS office.

    • I got the encore 1, have it now running Windows 10 technical preview

Apart from the crappy Wifi issue of the system, all goes well with Windows 10.

But by running Encore 1, I am very aware of the RAM shortage while firing up Desktop software, hence I am not kidding around when I put claim on speculation of 1GB ram models, especially when you fire up chrome to browse sites with tons of flash!!

  • +1

Hey guys, just looking for a reason to get one >:) What will you be using it for?

    • +1

As a person using LG g pad 8.3, I'd say,I normally use it for :
      1. Reading in bathroom.
      2. In buses/trains for reading books, watching movies, etc
      3. Surfing ozbargain and other sites when at home
      4. During my uni days for reading lecture notes, Pdf etc
      5.Syncing my Dropbox to it

Tbh if you have a 5" phone and a laptop you don't need it, but the battery life and standby on these things is extremely good and I these things are really pocket able and portable..

        Thanks for the reply General!

        • +1

He have basically wrote most of the things I can think of, but I think he missed one point.

This tablet can run full Office etc etc, it can run PC softwares (it basically is a netbook in a tablet form) given that those don't require that much performance from your tablet.

That being said, I personally find Android tablets to function better as a tablet than Windows Tablet, so if you want to get tablet for what GeneralZod has said, it might be better to look at Android tablets.

      • +2

Reading in the bathroom, as in on the throne!
make sure tablet is wiped with alcohol often!

  • How does this compare to the old i think 2011 samsung galaxy tab 10.1 GT P7500 model in terms of gpu / graphics and cpu power… Im assuming the ram is just ram probably clocked at the same if not similar frequencies.

  • -1

Why buy now if there's always a better deal next hour! ;)

  • I keep reading about desktop. Can someone please clarify if this can run a full desktop just as any other laptop would or will it limited be some kind of mobile page like the windows tiles?

    • +1

      Full Windows 8.1 desktop :)

    • +1

Basically it's a netbook in a tablet form. It runs same OS as your desktop would.
Though, unlike your desktop, you'd rely more on the metro apps, than in a desktop, from the store because they run well/is optimised to touchscreen.

  • Thanks guys. Sure sounds like a winner!

  • This has a mini HDMI port. so i can hook up to monitor and use as a PC right?

    • You can, but bear in mind that this thing is fairly limited in its hardware, i.e. RAM. Other than that, you'd have no problem (well other than having micro USB instead of full USB, but that's besides the point)

    • this 8inch model does not have any hdmi outputs. only the 10 inch one have hdmi port.

      • Correct.

  • Travelling to Europe next month and was tossing up getting a cheap second hand netbook or one of these. Main purpose is to transfer and backup photos from the camera SD card. The android tab just doesnt cut it for transferring larger amount of data.

This looks like the perfect accessory for my purpose.
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/kwmobile-7-IN-1-MICRO-USB-CARD-RE…

    • Given the limited storage space wouldnt a larger SD card have been a better investment?

      • +1

I think the main use of the reader/hub wouldn't be to transfer photos to the tablet for storage, but to allow the use of the tablet as a means of transferring those photos elsewhere, ie cloud storage or perhaps simply to an external HDD.

        • +1

Exactly, the idea is to have a copy besides the SD card, so copying from the SD card directly to the External HDD.
Could copy to a microSD, but that will be holding all my TV/Movies etc..

        • @danield: ahh of course! That's a good idea. I wonder if cameras with Wi-Fi could soon do this direct to a Wi-Fi enabled drive. That would be awesome. Have a great trip!

  • This model does not come with the wacom pen, does it?

    • Correct, no pen.
