Bonus 1GB on Telstra BYO and No Lock in Plans (Total 3.5GB on $55 Plan etc.)

921

Telstra has announced a bonus 1GB of data for BYO plans and No Lock in Plans, valid for the life of the plan.

I know, many of you will say it's not a bargain because it's Telstra, but 3.5GB for $55 is incredibly good compared to what Telstra's pricing has been in the past.

The usual offer includes only 1.5GB, there is already a 1GB bonus running and now this is a second 1GB bonus for a limited time only.

Minimum contract length is 12 months.

There is also a $45 BYO plan, which includes 2GB of data.

The offer expires on the 27th of April, HOWEVER the Telstra Upgrade offer that has been running for a while now (allowing you to choose between a bonus $1000 of calls or 1GB of data per month expires on the 31st of March.

As mentioned in the comments, you also get Telstra's Peace of Mind Commitment if you sign up for one of the contracted plans - that is, you receive unlimited calls, unlimited text, and 25GB of data for use in your first month of your contract.

Also, remember that you can recontract within the last 31 days of your existing Telstra contract with no charge. If you recontract before this day, you will have to pay a $50 Early Recontract Fee, as well as any remaining Device Payment Contract amount.

  • Good find

    • ..but behold, a marvel to observe. Telstra so moved by Voda's Uncounted autumnal offering( psst updates>cloud services>netflix>endless radio) that it should now throw its kin a bone .

For the 1st month alone T's get to sample the real deal '25GB'& a order of magnitude increase to quota, fundamentally changes the way apps consumed

Copy to Voda- - Telstra CONFIRMED, grandfathering their bone :D.

** tip inline thread for $50.prepaid.price-beat apparently. Boom.
      3.5g wooo

  • I believe you'll also get 25GB for the month too. Time for me to switch away from my ancient plan.

When it says "for the life of the plan", that means we'll get 3.5GB/month at $55 for as long as we are on that plan, and not for the length of the contract, right?

edit: yup, the fine print says:

BYO 1GB bonus data offer: The offer is effective for the life of your plan unless you move to an ineligible plan or cancel your plan.

    • Yep, that's right :)

  • bugger - I literally just converted by expired contract plan to the casual $55 plan. This included 500MB bonus data per month

Now I see this has gone up to 1GB bonus per month on this plan. @astrodude - don't suppose you know if I would be eligible for this upgrade?

bit pissed this wasn't mentioned when I signed up

    • Check with Telstra Support. They are pretty good with this sort of thing.

      • +6

I have had to deal with Telstra support 3 times this week. They are not "pretty good" with anything. I don't think I've ever been more frustrated dealing with a company. That flippin voice recognition…

        • +2

Well that was fun. Since I signed up on Monday and this offer came in to effect today, there is no way that they can give me the extra 1GB allowance on the plan

So now I offered to cancel my plan(casual) and sign up again to the same plan and get the bonus offer. I guess there is a way….

I get headaches every time I talk to this mob.

        • +7

Try livechat.telstra.com while watching some cricket. Much more stress-free.

        • +2

@astrodude: yep - tried that. They just told me I can't get it. Thanks for nothing…(them not you)

        • @fattyboombatty: Well since it's a no lock in plan you should be able to change that fairly easily, as you have no contract.

If they still give you trouble there's always the option of switching out to Optus on a $2 sim, and returning an hour later with the bonus data. :)

        • +1

          @astrodude:
Yeah - I've taken the matter in to my own hands and done it that way. Optus coverage here sucks - if I didn't need to be on Telstra I would have left long ago

        • In just a few words, explain why you don't like voice recognition…

Great. You've selected billing. Is that correct?

    • +1

Same situation for me. Tried to switch over without paying anything but they refused. eventually recontracted on the same plan now with the bonus data. For the $50 dollars I paid to recontract an extra 1GB of data each month works out to be pretty good value.

  • Someone explain why this is better than lycamobile's unlimited calls + 5gb = $19/month? They are apparently a telstra reseller.

    http://www.lycamobile.com.au/en/super-saver-plan

(actually I was considering posting the above.. what do you think? are there any deal-breaking pitfalls about lyca that mean I shouldn't?)

    • +4

      Lyca is not 4G.

    • +3

Lyca is 3G only and people report the data connection is slow.

      http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2367599

The $19 price isn't locked in either. They also don't allow tethering.

    • +1

      lyca is 3g only.

    • +1

I don't mind 3G. That's all I've got now. But if it was to time-out a game, that would be an issue.

I also don't need tethering except in extremely unusual circumstances.

    • lyca seems to good to be true, bad reviews out there for lyca. lyca might even be 2G.

      • +2

It's 3G but all your internet data goes through their crappy gateway turning it into 2G speeds.

    • Lycra: no tethering if I recall correctly.

Edit: Doh, now I see no tethering required.

  • +1

Title says "No Lock in", while in detail it reads "Minimum contract length is 12 months"

    • You can also get it on the casual plans

    • The bonus data offer is for both - BYO and contract plans.

    • No Lock in Plan = Casual Plan. You're able to sign on to a BYO plan that locks you in for 12 months, or a casual plan that is month to month.

You get a price benefit for going into a contract - for example, you only pay $55 for the same benefits you would get on a $70 casual plan.

  • Damn, my current BYO plan expires on 5th May, a little over a week after this expires.

Anyone know if I'd be able to 'upgrade' to this plan before my current plan expires? I'm forever buying extra data packs, 1.5GB just doesn't cut it.

    • Just sign up on the last day, you'd only miss it on a week of your current provider.

      • Telstra IS my current provider. I'll have a chat with Live Chat and see what they can do.

        • +1

I just "upgraded" by moving from $70 (3.5GB) to $55 (3.5GB special) so kept same data allowance. Call amounts don't matter as I hardly make calls. And no recontract fee, but for the fact my contract restarted so I have to stay with Telstra longer to avoid exit fees.

Saved $15 a month plus got extra 25GB first month. Great deal.

        • @freelife: +1000 this is awesome!!!!!

        • +1

So they renewed my contract, even with 3 mths to go, they waived the recontract fee and gone from 1.5GB to 3.5GB with no extra cost.

          AWESOME!

    • +1

You'll be able to upgrade your contract within 31 days of the end of your contract at no penalty/$50 early recontracting fee.

    • As hrdnrg has already said, you can upgrade a full 31 days before the end of your actual contract.

So set yourself a calendar appointment for 5 April.

Now, keep in mind that the Telstra Upgrade offer (which provides one of the bonus GBs) expires 31 March. I would advise that you pay $50 ETC and recontract early in order to take advantage of both offers.

  • +2

BTW astrodude, are you a rep for a certain friction-reducing agent? :)

    • +1

you had to slip in with that comment

      • +1

        Id say he glided in.

        • +1

          Sorry… I couldn't help it, oKY!!

  • So does this mean on the $45 plan you get 500mb + 1gb + the extra Telstra 'upgrade bonus' of another 500mb = 2gb per month?

If so, that's a fantastic offer on Telstra.

    • yes

    • Keep in mind the expiry of the Telstra Upgrade offer - 31 March 2015, unless extended (already extended from 31 Dec 2014).

  • Optus

$60 unlimited talk and text +6gb data month to month no contract.

Im on this m2m as I dont live and work in city and my note 2 has 4g its pretty darn good.
Cant belive I have burnt through 5.5gb data though…. I know I have but yeh lotta PH.

    • If you are spending $60 already, why not get their 15GB plan? You get unlimited calls and sms as well for just $60/m, pretty good value I think.

      • Depending on the day I could easily burn through a gig ina few hours.

Also pre paid aint my thing anymore

  • +1

Optus $2 days means for $60 a month you get

    • unlimited talk
    • unlimited text
    • 15Gb of a data a month (500Mb/day, expandable up to 1Gb)
    • 4G
    • no lock in contract

no bad considering if you sit on wifi all day and don't make a call, you don't actually pay the $2 for that day.

  • Irritating.

Contract ends in 9 months on - 13 November 2015
    Costs to alter contract:
    Includes: $578.76
    Plan early termination charge $315.69
    Device buy out $263.07

So I guess I'm stuck for now. Excellent reward for existing customers….NOT.

If I stick with this I pay $99 (9x$11) for the phone and $45 (9x$5) extra for the $60 plan I'm on. My only complaint is I only have 1GB. I'd love 3.5GB but I'm not paying $434 for the privilege.

    • So I guess I'm stuck for now. Excellent reward for existing customers….NOT.

This is what I hate about Telstra, I'm out after this round. Overcrowded, overpriced and under serviced.

    • +1

So I guess I'm stuck for now. Excellent reward for existing customers….NOT.

To be fair, you did sign the contract. Surely you were aware that it would cost you money to break the contract?

      • -1

Yes I was aware. I got a galaxy S4 in the bargain. It's still annoying to have gotten stuck with one of the plans they came out with when things were at their most expensive.

    • Unlike other carriers, of that $315.69, you only pay $50.00.

      So your early termination cost is $263.07 + $50.00 = $313.07.

  • +2

Need a starting point lower than $45 to get me remotely interested

  • Isn't Boost the same full Telstra coverage at $40 unlimited and 2.5Gb?

    • Boost doesn't get 4G

      • Is this deal 4G? Can't see it anywhere.

        • +2

As far as I know, the big 3 telcos don't have 3G plans anymore.

        • +2

If you get any plan with Telstra, you have access to the full range of connectivity we provide.

  • +6

    Had a chat to Telstra.
I think my prepaid cap encore option with them is still better, they tried hard to move me over. =p
$40 gets me 2GB (I can use my credit to buy 2 blocks of 700MB on top of my 600MB)
$550 worth of calls as well
Free calls from 6pm - 6am everday to all australian numbers

If you are on the Cap Encore I suggest you do not move! =)
    https://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/prepaid-mobiles/fre…

    • Is the Cap Encore available for new subscribers or are they being phased out for the Freedom plans?

      • They were phased out last year.

    • Hmm I almost got duped in the razzle dazzle and moved my wife over.
      Thanks

    • Dont forget - You can use the credit in the Android market. I'm assuming you cant do the same with OP's offer hey?

    • I looked at the same thing and the prepaid cap encore option is definitely better with no lock-in period.

For the same $55 you would get 3.8GB data (800MB plus a 3GB pack bought with the credit) and still have $6 left over each month to buy google play apps/subscriptions.

However I can see this deal being great for those who don't want to have to remember to recharge, or worry about buying data packs - I'd recommend this for any new family iPhone owners for a tech-supportless experience!

  • I tried moving my older $50 BYO plan to the $55 plan on a 12 month contract, but Telstra told me they would only apply one of the two promotions, not both. That was online via their 24x7 web chat, I think I will pop in store on Sunday to talk to them directly…

    • I just spoke to the web chat and they said that you can have both.

    • Both offers apply. The Telstra Upgrade (first bonus) will get applied on the spot, the second applies within 48 hours.

      • Can you help please. Can I get 3.5GB on this plan for $55. I am at the Telstra store fountain gate. Should the in store associate know about the bonus 1GB on the 2.5GB ??

        • +1

It's ok. One store had no clue about the deal. Another store had it advertised in store

        • +1

@aussieaubs: Glad you managed to sort it out.

  • Nice… thanks !!

My $60 p/m 1.5GB plan ran out.. so i re-signed up yesterday and thought 2.5GB deal was great… my upgrade got delayed.

I used the 24/7 chat online thing just now and talked with an operator (named Ar i think) and they cancelled my delayed plan and set me up with this new plan, which includes both bonus data..

so now my monthly plan is $5 cheaper with an extra 2GB data.

    Happy with that.

(and Telstra coverage is best, ive tried the others and always come back).

    [edit] BYO plan

  • Hmmm now the question is, do I go $45 for 2gb or $55 for 3.5gb

    • 1GB data pack is $15. So definitely worth the price difference for the data alone, let alone the extra calls.

  • -2

My current contract expires on the 2nd of May. What is my plan of action rep? Cheers!

  • This is great. I was on the Mobile Accelerate Casual $55 plan, paying $15/m for extra data (after getting screwed around by Telstra when they called me up and offered me a deal that turned out to be literally too good to be true… long story). So this effectively gives me more calls and more data for the same price, without any lock-in contract.

But seriously, if it weren't for the fact that Optus and Vfone suck balls where I live, I'd have switched long ago. Customer support seems to have dropped off a cliff in the last year or two…

  • Thanks OP for heads up - contacted telstra on live chat and they switched me over to the new conract and waived the fees to get the 3.5gb - too easy!

  • Currently with Vaya (much regret), worthwhile switching to the $55 plan? Or should I just wait for the Amaysim 4G unlimited?

  • Literally just signed up yesterday! Luckily on a month to month - Think I might switch to 12 months provided it gives me this upgrade locked in.

    • Just as an update on this: I called Telstra, was able to cancel my initial order and sign up again on this. They confirmed that I'd get both sets of bonus data for as long as I choose to stay on the plan, even though I'm on a month to month.

  • I get 3.5gb pm with unlimited calls / text through boost on the tested network for $40

    • Boost mobile runs on the wholesale Telstra network, which doesn't include 4G at this stage.

That is also a great value plan though.

  • there's no telstra reception at garden city westfield, upper mt gravatt and Warrigal Square, Runcorn. :(

    • Hmm, where in garden city? I have reception there. 8 Street used to have no reception, but now I have good 3G there.

Haven't had problems at Warrigal Square either. I've only been to the maccas there though.

      • i still got problem 2 weeks ago near 8 street, and the new wing, have they finally fix it?
macca side is a little bit better, still drops out once a while, but if you are at the woolworth/restaurant/toilet part = no reception.

        • I had coverage at 8 Street when I was here last month.

I'm sitting at Hakataya at warrigal square right now, in front of Woolworths. Posting this from my phone. I have 2 bars of 4G here. I walked up and down the block and it's consistent.

    • +2

@uccoffee And you're hoping someone on OzBargain can help you with this ?

      • lol, not hoping, just complaining on every spots on the net.

  • Oh damn! I just joined Telstra after switching from liveconnected on feb6. Possible to get this extra data? I already took the 1gb from the mobile accelerate promo

    • I called telstra and asked about getting the new plan for free - they basically said since the cooling off period had already passed (10 days) I would have had to pay an extra $50 to get a new contract.

  • Or for those that don't need 4G but want Telstra network, $40 of Boost credit gets you unlimited calls and SMS, plus 2.5GB data.

  • Thanks for bringing this to the light! I was on the same $50/1gb plan for 5 years and just had a chat to Telstra. Now i'm on a $45 p/month plan with 3GB of data / $550 of calls/text. Happy with that!

    • Hmm, how'd you get 3GB for $45?

  • Employment verification? I've been a Telstra customer for 10+ years, but I still have to jump through all the BS hoops to try and get this plan. No thanks.

  • Tempted to go, at the moment on the $12.99 TPG plan which is only 3G. Last 2 months I overused my data and TPG had to take more money from my account. Can anyone advise me if $40 or $55 is worth the price for me as I use an iPhone 6 Plus.

    • 4g is very fast and will improve your phone experience greatly… No brainer.

  • Very good deal! Crappy data limits is the only real downside traditionally with telstra.

  • Is this deal available on the $39 staff plan?

    • I just confirmed. Staff plan is not included…that that plan is already amazing value.

  • Awesome just recontracted on the $55 plan

    Thanks

  • So on the $55 plan, it says 1.5GB + 1GB bonus (expires on 27th April)….. Then choose either 1GB bonus or calls.

Are we sure that this is going to be 3.5GB of data for the life of the plan?? or just until 27th April then it drops back to 2.5GB?

    • +2

Are we sure that this is going to be 3.5GB of data for the life of the plan?? or just until 27th April then it drops back to 2.5GB?

Yup we are sure. It's for the life of the plan, not the life of the contract. Check out the fine print at the bottom of the page linked to above.

BYO 1GB bonus data offer: The offer is effective for the life of your plan unless you move to an ineligible plan or cancel your plan.

Telstra Upgrade: Available on $55 and above Mobile Accelerate Plan (including Data Share Plan) and 24 month $45 and above Mobile Accelerate BYO Plan (including Data Share BYO Plan). Some usage is excluded, such as calls/text/MMS to premium numbers (eg 19xx numbers), 1234, 12455, 12456 and satellite numbers, content charges and use overseas. Unused allowances expire monthly. Your chosen Telstra Upgrade will start on your contract commencement date, and will remain on your account until you recontract, cancel your plan or move to an ineligible plan.
