Bonus 1GB on Telstra BYO and No Lock in Plans (Total 3.5GB on $55 Plan etc.)

921

Telstra has announced a bonus 1GB of data for BYO plans and No Lock in Plans, valid for the life of the plan.

I know, many of you will say it's not a bargain because it's Telstra, but 3.5GB for $55 is incredibly good compared to what Telstra's pricing has been in the past.

The usual offer includes only 1.5GB, there is already a 1GB bonus running and now this is a second 1GB bonus for a limited time only.

Minimum contract length is 12 months.

There is also a $45 BYO plan, which includes 2GB of data.

The offer expires on the 27th of April, HOWEVER the Telstra Upgrade offer that has been running for a while now (allowing you to choose between a bonus $1000 of calls or 1GB of data per month expires on the 31st of March.

As mentioned in the comments, you also get Telstra's Peace of Mind Commitment if you sign up for one of the contracted plans - that is, you receive unlimited calls, unlimited text, and 25GB of data for use in your first month of your contract.

Also, remember that you can recontract within the last 31 days of your existing Telstra contract with no charge. If you recontract before this day, you will have to pay a $50 Early Recontract Fee, as well as any remaining Device Payment Contract amount.

      • thanks, great deal… contract ending next week, great timing !

"I know, many of you will say it's not a bargain because it's Telstra…"

Bit hard to compare a service that's usually working well with something that isn't (ie. not Telstra) though.

    There. I said it. Mad?

    • Pretty much this for rural WA, unless I want net that only works during school hours and standing in one spot when it's not cloudy/rainy. Vodafone network reception = 0, Optus reception = if the stars are aligned, telstra network not too bad.

Wow, business plans really get screwed over in the data quota. 1GB of data on a $55 business plan vs 3.5GB of data on a $55 personal plan. Also get less talk value, $550 vs $700 What gives?
Not sure the business perks make up for the shitty data and calls allowance. Free unlimited MMS is nice, I guess.
Business data packs are a rip-off, too.

  • This is still a worse deal than what you can get on Telstra prepaid - With Beyond Talk cap you can get 3.5 GB per month for $50

(500mb included, then buy a $49 3GB browse plus pack after topping up - which comes out of the $50 "real money" balance).

I'm still on Encore Cap (which is no longer available) and getting 3.8 GB per month for $50 using the same method.

Is there any reason you would go for a contract with 12-month lock-in for $5 more per month ($60 more per year) for the same amount of data?

Prepaid also has the advantage that you're not forced to pay the $50 like clockwork every month - If I go overseas for a few weeks I'll wait til I get back to top up (obviously I'd never use the Telstra SIM while overseas). Same thing if I'm staying at home with wifi for a few days - No need to top up until you actually need mobile data again.

"Is there any reason you would go for a contract with 12-month lock-in for $5 more per month ($60 more per year) for the same amount of data?"

I think that you had already answered your question yourself (which is no longer available). These new offer are for those people that cannot get encore cap on prepaid anymore but still want the extra data.

"I'm still on Encore Cap (which is no longer available) and getting 3.8 GB per month for $50 using the same method."

      • The byo $70 has free night and free weekend calls.

      • You can still get almost the same deal with Beyond Talk cap which is still available (which was the main point of my post) - It's just 3.5 GB per month instead of 3.8 GB with Encore.

    • Is there any reason you would go for a contract with 12-month lock-in for $5 more per month ($60 more per year) for the same amount of data?

I'm currently on the Beyond Talk prepaid deal getting 3.4 GB per month for $50 using the technique you’ve described. MMS messages are not included in the Beyond Talk cap. You have to use your ‘real money’ for this which is already used up when you purchase the 3GB data pack. ($50 - $49 for 3GB data pack = $1 ‘real money’ remaining per month.) MMS (within Australia) are changed at $0.50 each so 2 x MMS per month.

Sure there are other ways to send an ‘MMS’ (email, Facebook Messenger, etc.), but for an extra $5 per month (equivalent of sending 10 MMS per month) you can send as many as you like within the $700 value talk & MMS included on the plan. It won’t entice everyone but I’m strongly considering jumping on this new deal simply to avoid this hassle.

      • I don't seem to be charged for MMS on Encore Cap - I mainly send photos to other iPhone users so it uses iMessage which is free/just comes out of data allowance, but I've definitely sent more than 2 standard MMS to Android users this month and I still have my $1 "real money" balance left from when I topped up $50 almost a month ago.

Having to pay 50c real money per MMS seems ridiculous in 2015 - Seems like a legitimate reason to prefer this contract over Beyond Talk then.

Definitely going to hang on to my Encore Cap for as long as I can.

        • Yeah it seems the Encore Cap was a really good deal. I'd definitely hang onto it.
I'll be switching to this new plan once this months credit expires.

  • My contract with Optus expires on 04/04. They want to charge me early termination fee if I switch to Telstra on 31/03. It looks like I am going to miss out on this.

    • +1

Optus are doing the bonus data deal aswell, in fact they started a month ago Telstra are reacting. I went with 1.5 GB on Optus for $30, no contract.

    • Ask Telstra if they'll pay out your Optus early termination fee.

    • But the website says it expires 27th April. I think this deal expiry date is incorrect

  • hmmm wondering if i can hop from telstra amway plans to this directly ?

    • From what I know, Amway plans would be under a corporate plan. You'll need to go into a shop and provide paperwork authorising the transfer from business into a consumer account

      • +2

Jst spoke to AMWAY guys and now I am on this plan.

so its $52.50 per month / addtional 1 GB as per the promo (inlcuding 2.5 as standard data usage limit) + $70 credit towards first bill.

        Awesome.

  • Hi, does anyone know..

I am on BYO 55 at the moment and still has 5 mths to go. if I recontract to again for another 12mths , do I pay $50.00 only for recontracting or do I inccur my ETC as well?

    Thanks.

    • $50 early recon fee only applies

  • +1

Thanks OP. Just upgraded over live chat.

I'm $14/mo better off and with an additional 500MB data… and that's before the one month of 25GB and unlimited calls!

    • +2

      You're welcome!

  • Just signed a 12 month BYO $55 late Jan.

Waiting in queue on the chat to see what they can do. Not expecting anything special!

  • For those that use <600MB/month, still a better deal to go prepaid $30 (which gives 400MB) and then recharge when you run out.

If you don't want lock-in, prepaid is a better deal if you use <730MB/month.

Is it possible to redeem the +Extra $1,000 worth of calls for cash?

  • +1

Managed to get the rep to waive the $50 recontract fee, still had 7months on my existing BYO plan.
Now got 3.5GB a month thanks OP!

    • Great to hear :)

      • thats good for you then… I couldn't get them to waive it even though I just contracted to the BYO $55 plan 14 days before they started the promotion

  • +1

Swapped my $49 1.5GB BYO to the $45 2GB BYO.

Had to show the dude in-store the promotion. They didn't seem to know about it.

  • BTW

everyone should be careful with this.. I joined up to the M Plan and when I got the sms of 27.5gb to use on the first month I was curious as it meant 2.5gb instead of 3.5gb. Went onto online support and this is what I got.

    XXXXX(named removed)
"The 2.5GB is the sum of your base data + extra 1GB from your selection of either extra data or $1000 allowance. Only one bonus data is applied, the one you see under Telstra upgrade is also the same as what was under the data section. The data section only indicated the maximum data you can get with the $55 BYO."

It's being escalated, but just double check your accounts if you joined

    • +1

It will take up to 48hrs for the extra 1gb to be added to your account.
I went into a Telstra shop today and signed up to the $55 BYO plan…..in the portal that staff look at it quite clearly says that both offers can be added simultaneously. The rep added a note saying I signed up on the proviso that there is a total of 3.5gb data. I got the extra data SMS a few minutes later and my data jumped to 27.5gb from my old 1.5gb.
The staff didn't have any idea about the deal either. They were quite taken aback when they realised.

      • I know how things can go so I requested a note on my account that I signed up for a total bonus of 1.5GB but they forgot.

  • Yeah, I had 2 staff tell me online that it was only 2.5gb and that the bonus's didn't stack. Took about 45 minutes for them to sort it out on my account and then I got the SMS shortly after.

  • I am still having issues despite the website clearly stating they stack. Wondering if anyone else hasn't had the correct data amount allocated?
