Pay by any MasterCard DEBIT card using phone/mobile for no booking fees!

    • Thank you dammit. Added to bottom of post.

    • Hmmm you also lose the travel insurance cover from your credit card company. I had to look up Jetstar's cancellation rate yesterday for an upcoming trip, and it's consistently around 2.2% overall for the past few months. So unless you are buying travel insurance separately, I'd tank the booking fee. YMMV.

      • +1

But most basic credit card travel insurance has an excess of $100 - $250. That can equate to more than the cost of the flights anyway

        • It's more than the cost of the ticket; they cover accommodations too:

(This is from CitiBank, which I assume most OZBr would have from the $0 annual fee promotion)

If you reschedule your travel arrangements at the earliest possible opportunity after the unexpected event, we will pay for either (at our option):
          (i) any part of your rescheduled travel and accommodation arrangements for which you have paid but are unable to use and are non-refundable; or
(ii) the cost of a higher class of travel on the same type of means of transport or increased seasonal rates for travel, if that is the only class or rate available We will pay these costs minus the amount of any refundable part of your rescheduled travel arrangements.

If you do not reschedule your travel arrangements, we will pay for any part of your cancelled travel and accommodation arrangements for which you have paid but will not use and are non-refundable.

If you want to claim under this cover, you must take the following steps as soon as possible after the unexpected event:
(iii) recover any refund you are entitled to; and
(iv) cancel any other travel or accommodation arrangements that flow on from your original travel arrangements and that you are now unable to use.

Meals are also covered (god knows how much food or hourly bed rental you can get with $250 in an airport):

          7. Travel delay
If departure of your scheduled means of transport is delayed for six or more hours, we will reimburse your additional meal and accommodation expenses if you supply receipts for the expenses incurred and written confirmation from the carrier confirming the length of delay.

I'm new to this (like I said, literally only looked things up yesterday), would be nice to have some expert opinion! Please do share :)

You don't need travel insurance in NZ anyway because aussie citizens are covered by NZ's public healthcare system (unless you want further cover for lost luggage or whatever)

      • Isn't there usually a minimum spend to get the travel insurance through the credit card? $150 spend doesn't make me eligible on my card.

  • at these prices, are we sure they don't drop you off half way and you have to paddle the rest of the way?

    • +10

They don't usually but for you they'll make an exception. 😊

  • Damn that's cheap - any suggestions on best time to go weather wise for say hobbit tour?

    • Wellington is NZ home of craft beer, drink up! Also I hear the wildlife park thingy they have there is nice too. Weather is nice now, gets cold in winter like here.

bloody sydney misses out. its like we've turned into perth or adelaide

    • this always happens lately! Not fair!

    • +1

Airport fee's are too high for them to turn a profit at these prices. Blame Sydney Airport Corporation if anyone! I just hope SAC doesn't run the 2nd Sydney airport otherwise it will be abysmal!!

    • +1

Did you see the new fares from Sydney to Singapore vs Melbourne to Singapore? Not only do you have to fly to Melbourne to get to Singapore but they'll charge you 50â„… more for the pleasure.

    • Explains why Melbourne <-> Sydney flights were so expensive in yesterday's domestic sale. I didn't look at other Sydney legs.

  • +1

This is an incredible deal! I think I might book it now, then change the return flight based on work holiday allowances. Anyone know what the change fee is for Jetstar?

  • +1

Ahh, Jetstar must be a tad nervous with dollar parity so close, NZ was expensive before, now it would have to be one of the most expensive.

  • Damn. Can't find any cheap flights for the ANZAC weekend.

  • Wow. That's awesomme.

Why are there never any cheap flights to Queenstown!

    • +5

Because everyone wants to go there.

    • Hire a car/motorhome, take the ferry across to South Island and do a loop of the South Island crossing the ranges to Haast after stopping off at Queenstown. It seriously is one of the worlds greatest drives.

      • Probably not ideal for a lone student traveler

        • I strongly disagree. That part of the world has an incredible student travelling experience.
Check out the "Kiwi Experience" hop on / hop off buses.

        • @guidedlight:

I meant hiring a car, probably not cost effective for just 1 person.

        • @ptenkae: I got a car for NZ$15/day last year. Pretty damn affordable.

        • +1

          @jason07: pray tell details please…

  • damn, no skiing there :(

  • Great, going to NZ!

  • Thanks TA. $231 return to Auckland from Mel. is dirt cheap!

  • Booked! NZ here we come!! Thanks TA!

If you take $1650 of purchases with you as carry-on for the tourist refund scheme, you are practically getting a free flight :)

    • +2

Except that you can only bring $900 tax-free back IN with you.

      • +1

Yes, because everyone is re-declaring their TRS'ed items when returning to the country.

        • That's not the point; after all you can always turn ANY 25%-off sale into a 100%-off sale just by shoplifting, downloading from pirate sites or just plain old mugging, but there's no skill, fun or OzB-honour in that.

The OzBargain game is to save the most money by unearthing odd sales, using strange airlines, splitting big purchases into multiple $99 transactions, navigating amazon.es or amazon.jp using only Google Translate and the pictures, and making all your personal hygiene products with recipes from ghost-written Kindle pamphlets picked up from TA's latest freebie post.

And buying more Eneloops every time they release a new colour or flavour.

  • I've booked a trip…thank you TA!!!

When does it start to warm up ther after winter?

    • December lol.

    • We went last year in September/October and the weather was beautiful!
Cool but sunny on the South Island and warm and sunny up on the North Island.

  • It seems like where the dollar is falling, the flight prices are too. Remember is may be cheaper to fly there than it used to be but once you land everything is going to be a lot more expensive than it used to be. The AUD:NZD rate has fallen 30% in the last year.

    • For reference…it was around $1.08 when I was there last year in July. It's around $1.04 now. I didn't find anything particularly expensive except petrol! We had a great time, it's a beautiful country and it was easy to get around with a hire car. The weather was a lot milder than we were expecting for that time of year.

Wellington is awesome. Was a surprise highlight of my last trip to NZ in April 2014. Amazing price for flights - flying into Wellington airport can be pretty hair raising though! (check YouTube for Wellington airport landing videos)

    • Going to the airport and watching the landings over the fence should be on TripAdvisor as a tourist attraction!

  • Flight there from MEL is a red eye.

  • Holiday for my family of four booked for July for under $600 including bags. Can't complain about that :)

  • Any idea how long this promotion is on for?

    • It's all in the post.

  • Lol swore it wasn't there before ;) thanks ta

  • Any cheap recommendations to get from Wellington to Auckland?

    • Just booked Jetstar for $6 NZD

  • Booked my flight for 5 days with 3 days long weekend…

Also bonus found $6NZD ($5.76AUD) flight to Auckland

    • Oh? How did you score the $6 to Auckland?

      • +1

there were some $6nzd flights on Jetstar website this afternoon… from Auckland to Wellington or Wellington to Christchurch with limited dates, only found one way as the dates too separate. So drive one way and fly back return….

Got 3 x $6nzd one way tickets… Need to book 1 by 1 as if I choose 2+ person it went back to normal price.
