I feel like I should own one of these just because they are advertised so often on OzB. But I have no idea what I would use it for.

Its the best purchase I've made in a long time. It works especially well with android phones.

It let's you use ur smartphone to stream YouTube videos, spotify, chrome browser, and android phone.

    • +3

I use it to stream Plex and Youtube to the TV. Cheaper and less troublesome than running a 10-15m HDMI cable.

      EDIT:

      Sorry Hulu and Netflix too.

      • So your the one that keeps buying the Monster HDMI cables

    • Brass tacks… It (primarily) extends the display of your tablet or phone to your TV, via your WiFi network… If that's something you'd find useful, then one of these may be. With all the new streaming services hitting the market (Presto, Netflix, etc), you may find yourself in need eventually.

I'm a bit the same. I have a big bag of silver coins that I'm taking to the bank to cash in. I can justify buying something more if it's purchased with spare change.
PS: Or I could read the comments below and put my coins back in their Jar.

      Or NRL Livestream. ;-)

      • So I'm not the only one!

Chromecast is basically just a wireless HDMI dongle. Instead of plugging a HDMI cable from your computer to your TV to watch your shows stored in your computer or streaming from internet, you can do it wirelessly with Chromecast.

      • Don't see why someone negg'd ya… that's exactly what it is… You can use your phone to stream media content from your PC or the internet (such as youtube, hulu and netflix) provided the app let's you do so.

        • What someone neg me for that comment? Must be Mondayitis. I am not saying anything bad about Chromecast at all, just trying to explain in a simple way to other people who aren't familiar with Chromecast and how it works. I own one myself and like the convenience of streaming shows to my TV wirelessly.

Probably because that's NOT what it is.

What it IS, is a small, low powered, cheap computer, plugged into your TV HDMI port and controlled from a phone or tablet.

In general that means you can control it to play music/movies/etc. from an internet source, or from a source on your local home network - with the phone just being a 'remote control'.

Actually streaming music/movies/etc. from the phone or tablet itself is a special case - and generally best avoided unless you've no other option.

It's got more in common with a Raspberry Pi than it has a Miracast dongle.

That is the function at it's core… and that is what edfoo described… not to mention I personally don't know the internal workings but what makes the miracast dongle different from the raspberry pi?

Also I don't actually control the chromecast from an internet source, you need to be on the same network…

          @ProjectZero:

You stream from an internet(or local) source - you control it from a local controller (your phone). In theory it could allow control from anywhere on the internet (but that would be silly).

And what makes it different? Well, in general if you turn your phone off the chromecast will continue to stream your music/movie/etc. from the source (unless the phone was the source). Whereas with miracast you turn off the phone, the streaming stops.

          Why does it matter?

Quality. Because you are, say, streaming a precompressed MPEG4 file from a source, there is only one decompress stage (on the chromecast), and the compression is the best you could do (multiple passes, optimisation, etc.) If you use something like Miracast, you are decompressing then recompressing the file, in real time, on the phone, only to be decompressed again on the dongle. Needless to say, quality suffers.

And really, saying that it's a little computer, plugged into the back of the TV, controlled from the phone, isn't a complex idea to get across.

    • I cant get the Ansell lifestyle to fit my chromecast Properly.

Maybe I should wait for a Dick Deal?

  • At Rockdale only? online side $48?

  • +1

Just called Spearwood WA Big W, $49… only time it was lower was with Every Day Rewards card aparently.

    • +2

Yep, Rockdale only. Called, and it's a store special. 5 in stock.

      • 5 in stock? They're getting free advertising and will probably sell heaps more at normal price to people who don't read comments and rush to buy it.

        • Ye, I called around 12:30 and they only had 5 left. No idea how many they had to begin with.

  • +3

Don't forget, the Dick deal for a dollar more but with free delivery plus free Stan code (terrible name for a streaming service) ends today. Nationwide, not just Rockdale ;)

  • I have a smart and an iPhone already, is this any more useful for me?

    • I have a smart and an iPhone already, is this any more useful for me?

I'm going to assume you said smart TV… in which case, probably not… Although I can say this, I have a smart TV from samsung and it lags like hell when I want to use the smart TV functions… using this and controlling the media I want to watch from my phone is a lot less stressful seeing as it's touch screen and it doesn't lag.

    • You could for example subscribe to and stream movies and TV shows from Stan via your iPhone. Note the Chromecast does require an internet connection even if you are streaming content from your local devices and not the net - very annoying for me.

      • Didn't know this, do you know how much it uses or what it uses the net for? I mostly stream from my desktop to TV via PLEX.

        • It surely can't use that much as your content is local. It's more the inconvenience when we went travelling with it and tried to stream something to the hotel room's TV.

I have an iPad and found the Miracast works better with it. You can also transmit your PC screen, not just Chrome browser tabs. You can also just point it to files on your PC and it plays them.

      • Actually you can do the same thing with chromecast, thought it should be noted that if you have two or more monitors… it streams your whole desktop including your secondary monitor.

      • Thanks for the heads up on this. Just purchased one from eBay from an Aussies seller for $28 inc postage. Look forward to receiving it.

Meantime, does it stream any iPad app or is it dependent on if the app has Airplay activated or not (i.e. Foxtel Go has it turned off).

        • Foxtel Go can be AirPlay-ed if you JailBreak.

  • I love the idea of the Chromecast, but it doesn't have audio out, which means I can't run it through my speakers (and my TV speakers are awful). I've always passed on it for that reason.

    • +1

You can't connect your TV to your speakers via optical or the headphone jack? Or if your TV is connected to an amp just connect the Chromecast into that

      • No, not connected to an amp and no headphone jack on my TV :(

        • Weird that it doesn't have a 3.5mm output. What Brand TV/Model is it?

    • What sort of speakers do you have IHFC? Passive or powered? If you have passive connected to an amp then a Tos-Link from your TV to your amp/speakers will mean any audio source passing through the TV will go to your amp/speakers.

  • We've been informed that the store has "1 or 2 left" as of 4:55PM. If any updates let us know so we can mark the deal accordingly.

Edit: 15/3 We've been informed store should have stock again.

  • I decided to buy a chromecast and to be honest it's pretty much junk.
I only really bought it to cast football to my TV and even in 720p it's very choppy….. and considering I can already cast to my smart TV without a chromecast…

Glad I only paid $33, heck I might even take it back.

  • I have managed to get a price match in a Melbourne suburbs Big W. I called Rockdale first and they confirmed that this special is still on, till beginning of May. The first local Big W I called said that they would not price match, but the second one said they could if I had proof. I showed them this article and after a lot of hassling and manager approval, they did match the price :-)
