Sorry but there's no page here.

    • My guess is that the page won't be there until tomorrow because that's when the catalogue starts.

    • +1

Surely this deal is Chromecast for $39 (save $10 of normal price, plus $5.95 delivery) and nothing to do with Stan. Stan always has the 30 day free trial. Perhaps I am missing something, but it looks just like some product placement for Stan - perhaps they are subsidising Dick's deal this month to encourage takeup?

LOVE my Chromecasts… but does anyone know when V2 will be released?!

    • Whats wrong with V1?

      • +7

Lack of wireless 5Ghz for starters. My area is littered with dozens of 2.4ghz wireless networks that makes it quite hard to get a good stream going. Thankfully there has been some vacant space on Channel 6 for the past few weeks :-)

      • +6

Nothing's wrong with it… however although wireless is OK I'd still like to have the option to connect via Ethernet plus a direct audio output would be a great addition too and there are rumours that V2 may offer both. If not the Chromecast V2 then the next model up (is it the 'Play Box' or something) will offer these features but its release date is also unknown :(

        • +3

I'd still like to have the option to connect via Ethernet

That's when I'd consider getting one.

        • +9

@jv: Ahh, a fellow 'copper comrade' :) I may be old-fashioned but I still think Wifi should be dedicated to mobile devices and if a non-mobile product is released with Wifi it should still be hard-wire capable.

        • +1

The Nexus Player is apparently garbage software wise at the moment, but it acts as a Chromecast anyway so it'd work as a (fairly expensive) "ethernet Chromecast".

        • @Passa: The Nexus Player does not have an Ethernet port. I believe people have gotten around this by using USB Ethernet.

        • +4

you guys wanting ether net should look into a rapsberry PI 2 and a project I think is call PiCast.

        • @Elijha: I was hoping someone could do what I'm too lazy to do and figure out the pin-outs of the Comms IC and just hack a Chromecast instead :) Been doing PCB level hacks like these for years but I'm 'getting too old for this sht'* and just hope someone else can do the hard work instead ;)

        • +1

@tonyamazing: wow, sorry didn't know that. What a silly omission.

        • V1 works perfectly. Wouldn't see the need for an upgrade more likely firmware update.

        • @Gavman: I got a Cubox. I love it but it's not a replacement for Chromecast when it comes to DRM support (OpenELEC on it can also serve as an AirPlay server, but again - no DRM).

      • +1

It can't stream 1080p content without stutter (specifically my 10-20GB movies). That's why I don't use mine. I also have a stutter issue with twitch in its highest res. Perhaps its CPU just isn't powerful enough.

No, it's not a network or internet issue. 25Mbit NBN with Cat6/802.11ac network (Chromecast only supports 802.11n)

An ethernet option and perhaps a better CPU would make it pretty killer.

        • +1

i agree.. i have play any 1080p content.. it starts buffering after some time.. videostream is what i use..

        • +3

I can play 20gb 1080p files fine, streaming over wifi. I use a plex media server running on my desktop.

I haven't had anything I can't stream over wifi to the chromecast.

        • +1

          @theguyrules:
I also have never found anything I couldn't stream

        • +2

Are you sure that it's not interference or internal CPU issue rather than a bandwidth issue.

802.11n on Chromecast supports 300mb/s. A 20gb movie of around 2 hours long (7200seconds) would require a stream rate around 3MB/s, which is roughly 10 times slower than the max bitrate of the Chromecast.

Someone please correct me if my maths are way out.

        • +1

cpu or nas performance issues me thinks rather than wifi

        • @c0balt:

Theoretically 300 megabits/sec is approximately approximately 30megabytes/sec (plus some overhead). However in the real world getting -20Mb/s (bytes) with minimal interferences would be fantastic. Unfortunately most 802.11n run much slower than this, thus maintaining a consistent 3Mb/s would be difficult.

        • +2

          @theguyrules:
Plex Server auto-encodes based on the output so you may not be playing to the maximum resolution/bitrate.

        • @kingmw:
I'm aware, but you have to transcode to play most files on the Chromecast. However I always run it on Maximum quality with no issues.

    • +2

Yeah, I want 5ghz ac support, ethernet port and 4k and h.265 support.
but but.. for what it is the v1 is pretty useful. I mostly use it for playing Hulu and youtube off my phone to the TV.

      • +1

which is exactly what it was made for.

    • i want the nexus media player released for australia that is really chromecast v2. an actual interface etc !

  • This seems to be an online only special. Shouldn't the post include postage?

    • Can you 'click and collect' with DSE?

      • +1

not if it's an online only special :-)

        • Damn, thanks

  • +1

You can get 2 months free Presto which is Stan's competitor, They have some good collection of movies on it too as well Google Play free for 90 days. $6 credit to enjoy a movie rental from Google Play too

    https://support.google.com/chromecast/answer/6008760?hl=en-A…

    • I found Presto's chromecasting experience pretty ordinary. If you have an ipad (not iphone) or one of a couple of specific android tablets then you can use the app - which may be OK. I was stuck with using the Chrome browser tab casting from my laptop which is pretty clunky. Maybe they have improved things since my free trial expired - I dunno.

      • Lip sync isn't too good on Presto. Stan seems better.

      • Presto just launched an iPhone and Android phone app today.

        • +1

Good to see the competition is making them try a bit harder.

    • +1

Presto is goddahm SD. Worth $0.

  • -1

    It's good when it works
Constantly having to go through setup.
    Piece of $%&#@

    • +1

Sounds like you've got a faulty unit or interference with other devices. I have four and they've all been excellent apart from a few niggles every now & then but I'm blaming Plex for those :)

      • Interference as in microwave interference with 2.4ghz WiFi??
I'd set it up and it'd work fine then following day I'd have to go through the same process …. Weird
Too busy and lazy to work out the cause.
        Thanks for the tips anyhow.

        • Not sure. What other 2.4GHz devices do you have in the vicinity? Cordless phone, baby monitor, security syste,… the list is endless! Could be something the neighbour's running too, really not sure.

    • I got two no problem.

  • From what I understand, you need to sign up to Stan to capitalise on the discounted chromecast? I just cancelled my subscription once the free month was over. The service never worked properly on my Macbook and I already have Netflix.

    • what was their content like ? Noteable shows present/missing ?

      • Pretty good actually. Had a few things netflix was lacking, although some series of tv shows would only have a few seasons, eg Avatar the Last Airbender only had season 1 (of 3) for some reason.
Their marketing is all around 'Better Call Saul', straight from the US. Can't think of anything notably there/missing though.

  • +2

Would be great if you could stream local content without an Internet connection, like when you go on holidays.

    • +1

Tell me about it! I setup a Plex and a Chromecast to play media off a local NAS in a house with very limited internet connectivity thinking it'd all work perfectly… I mean why wouldn't it?! Of course Google being Google want to collect data from whatever you're viewing so before it will play anything it has to connect to the internet. Sometimes took 10-15 minutes to start playing sometimes, grrrrr. Probably my only real gripe with Chromecast TBH. Lets hope they can play offline in the future!

      • +1

IIRC casting video stored locally on a laptop with the Videostream extension worked well for my brother.

        • Ahh cool! So you think that maybe it's Plex reporting back, not the Chromecast itself? It'll be a while before I get back to that setup but I may be able to get someone else to test Videostream out for me. Thanks for the link!

        • +1

@SteveAndBelle: Maybe; Plex does have a cloud service, and it didn't seem to want to work without it. Then again I couldn't get Plex to work with the cloud service either, so I don't really know. After a couple of days of fiddling I just gave up on Plex and used the Chromecast and Videostream instead (both of which just worked out of the box).

        • @gmatht: Yeah, I'm thinking you're right. It must be Plex that's pinging the 'net. Thanks for the Videostream recommendation.

      • don't have that problem at all with my plex and chromecast.. playback takes 2-3 seconds to start. What format is your source media in? I suspect there's transcoding going on which is causing the issue you are experiencing…

        • So you have no active internet connection and it's working perfectly? Not sure you're understanding the problem exactly.

My Chromecasts all work perfectly with Plex sucking MKVs off an Xpenology NAS when there's an internet connection. The exact same media running through an identical Xpenology NAS will take anything from a few seconds to 15 minutes to start playing on a network with a flaky internet connection.

pretty shit deal if you can't click and collect and SYD metro shipping is a whopping $5.95

    • +1

What do you classify as "normal" shipping prices if this is whopping?

      • He has a point though, if shipping is a mandatory $6 with no click and collect option, then it blows 60% of the $10 you'd save otherwise on the Chromecast. Here's hoping for free shipping.

    • +1

      Pretty shit reason to neg.

    • It is too early to neg a deal based on shipping. The deal is during the period of 24 Feb to 9 Mar. We might find some free shipping code during the period.

    • Free delivery according to https://www.stan.com.au/chromecast

  • These were $37 instore at JB Chadstone last week. Not sure if it's still like that.

  • $39 with Stan code (http://www.dicksmith.com.au/networking-wireless/google-chrom…)
If it's a generic code this deal is going to get Brodened hard!

    • +1

$39 is not even a decent price. Thousands of people bought them at COTD(Sold by Dicksmith) for less than $30

      • Aussie dollar has collapsed since then though. Haven't seen prices close to $39 for a while.

  • Chromecast noob here.

Do I need to have a streaming device (e.g. a phone) to view Stan (or other apps for that matter)?

Or are there some apps that Chromecast is able to take advantage of simply over wi-fi, i.e., don't need a phone/laptop?

edit: wait…I just realised that there's no remote. So, I'm guessing I will need a streaming device…duh!

    • Not quite - the phone or browser is the remote, the chromecast does the streaming, unless you are using it in "mirror" mode. You either use an add-on in the browser [desktop] or the app itself has an option to connect to the chromecast if one is found on the wi-fi [phones] . There is also now a "guest" mode whereby visitors can use the chromecast without logging into your wi-fi via a PIN.

    • Yep, you can use a desktop/laptop PC, or their android or iphone app. Once your Chromecast is connected to the TV and your wifi, go to your streaming device, choose the media you want to stream, click on your chromecast and it sends it there.

  • i rarely use my chromecast. still waiting for the day the chromecast extension actually works in iOS for streaming chrome tabs to TV…

  • +1

Not off to a good start. Signed up to Stan and received the email with the code. Clicked the link to buy the chromecast and it won't stay in the cart. Managed to search chromecast and add to cart but won't accept code.

Rang Dick Smith and they knew nothing about the promotion. She eventually found out what it was (sort of) and started to do the order over the phone - until I told her it was free shipping. Waiting for a call back.

  • Same problem - did not accept code.
Code I received is "LU****YP" so probably not generic.

    • Yes it looks like it's not generic. Mine is different.

  • I managed to get the Chromecast to stay in my Shopping Cart (had to log in to DSE account) but it doesn't accept the code that was emailed to me. Will try again later.

Update: tried again without logging in, works now.

  • anyone has had any luck, this morning ? Does't look like working from the comments above .

    • +1

      Yes its working now.

      • do you mean working on the website as in you can apply the code and it accepts it?

        • +1

Yes. I went to the site via the email from Stan and it all worked without a problem.

        • Had the same problems, just completed checkout. Add a discounted powerbank (or 7) and make the most of free shipping ;)

        • @chichi:
Yes, confirmed working only if you follow the link from email:
          http://www.dicksmith.com.au/google-chromecast-dsau-xh1443sta…

It is basically same Chromecast but different Catalogue # (XH1443STAN)

  • +2

Already signed up to Stan a month ago. So i can't get in on this deal?

  • +1

Got the deal so I could get a Chromecast for my old man. Stan actually looked pretty good, but no root support on Android meant I cancelled my subscription immediately.

    • can't you use xCon or other root cloak to make it work ?

      • Probably - not really interested in doing so though.

    • I own 3 android tv boxes, all dodgy cheap Chinese junk, but all run SPMC perfectly fine.
      All 3 are rooted apparently.
Now I want to do the right thing but they make it hard for me.
      Really disappointed…

  • Is there any way to stream Foxtel Go to one of these doobries?

  • when did you guys received the discount code? I signed up, but no code been emailed to me.

    • Check your spam folder or promotions tab if you use gmail

  • so, we dont know what movies collection they have got until you pay for the subscription, is that correct?

  • Received discount code 5 minutes after having submitted.
The Stan app does not support rowed devices.

  • Getting this error: "Coupon code "Sign up Stan to get the code" is not valid."

    • lols… you literally have to sign up to Sign to actually get the code!

  • Is anyone else getting nothing in there cart after clicking 'Buy now'?

  • WOW! Some great movies

    • That sentence no verb. Puffery.

  • Ordered on 16 Mar, still waiting (23 Mar.) Are DSE or their choice of courier always this slow?

    • +1

I ordered 18/3 and received an email that night saying its on its way and a link to a tracking number.

Still no chromecast 6 days later on the 24th, so I decided to try the tracking - invalid link.

Chased it up with DSE email support, they were hopeless and couldn't tell me if the thing had even been sent or not, even though I had received an email saying it had been sent.

Phoned the online sales number today, it seems the store that was assigned the orders (In my case Pakenham) is not responding to emails or phone calls from DSE online and they have a heap of customers in the same boat waiting for Chromecasts. They will be getting back to me with a progress update within 24 hours apparently.

I made it clear that it was very misleading to customers when they receive an email saying their item has been sent, when in fact, it hadn't been.

      • +1

And today its onboard with driver for delivery.

Surprise surprise the day after I phoned.

  • Any idea how easy it is to cancel the subscription with Stan? Wouldn't want to sign up and end up having to call up and all. Cheers in advance.

    • EDIT: For those interested, you can cancel online immediately after the code is sent via email (~5minutes).

  • Thanks OP. Just ordered mine now.
Selected local pickup instead of delivery.
    Came down to $29.05!
    win
