SYD/MEL/BNE to LONDON return for $1999 on V Australia (via LA)

171

Saw this deal advertised in the paper this morning.
V Australia now offers return fares to London via Los Angeles.
This would be good if you wanted to have a USA stopover on the way.

Travel 20th January and 25th March, and 20th April and 20th May 2010.

LA - London is on Virgin Atlantic.

    Exactly.
and if you are not interested in visiting USA, this deal is not reasonable at all after paying more and spending more time let alone to go through the notorious friendly US immigration.

  • Long way to get to London but great deal with a USA stopover +ve from me.

not exactly a bargain at this price, i bet full service flight can be found lower than $2k

    • V Australia is full service airline.

    • Why do so many people think V Australia is a budget airline? Its not… its a full service airline… hence the reason why its called V Australia and not Pacific Blue.

      • Because all of Virgin Australia's brands (except this one) are budget carriers, and they haven't done much of a promotional job differentiating why V is different.

I think their onboard experience is quite decent, but it's quite understandable that people expect they are budget since they are under the same umbrella and not differentiated.

  • This is a great deal - it's almost a 'round the world ticket'.

There are many cheaper deals available on other sites such as that of Best Flights.

You need to pre-register to go to the USA and be fingerprinted and photographed when you arrive. No thanks.

not a good deal. i bought a world ticket with luftansa for $2200 including taxes which was la, fly out of new york, london, fly out of frankfurt, tokyo and back to sydney.

    • When was this ticket for?

Last year (before V Australia) I bought a return ticket from Brisbane to LA for more than $2500.

Now you can get to LA and London, return, for more than $500 cheaper. Seems like a good deal to me.

Because there's many other offers at a similar or lower price.

If your final destination is Europe, there are scores and scores of better deals.

Just because the price now is cheaper than it was before, doesn't automatically make it a "good deal". It could be that the previous price was too expensive, for example.

  • Can someone explain the economics of why Australians appear to get so badly ripped off on international flights?

My friend just bought a return flight from London to Sydney for £400, which at the current exchange rate is $720. Flying on Singapore airways. This was a special (happens quite often though) but even normal price is £550-600.

Surely the symmetrical flight should be the same price unless there is a higher demand for one-way flights in one direction than the other. But even that doesn't really explain it does it?

Is it just a case of "Rip off Australia"?
