As Lenovo has been known to install bloatware and Super Fish on their machines, we will wipe the hard disk and use one of our own images with no preinstalled software other than key utilities!!

    Nice price. Nice machine :-)
Pity I already have the MSI GT60 which weights a tonne..

I was thinking the same thing, with my $3200 MSI GT70-2OD…

Similar specs… almost double the price and double the weight :( and now it's under repair out of warranty… sigh

      Still, it is a beast.

      • I regret not getting the Ghost version :-(
Even the power adapter for the GT is a brick :-(

I won't downvote this deal, since the seller is offering to wipe the HDD.

But who honestly thinks, given the deceitful way Lenovo did this (then denied, then downplayed it, once caught) that there's no chance something else nasty is hidden in say, the motherboard firmware, or a hidden partition, or something else?

You are definitely taking a huge risk if you ever buy a PC from Lenovo again. I wouldn't buy one at half this price.

Their stunningly stupid, dangerous behaviour needs to be met with an appropriate response - a complete loss of demand for their products. Otherwise this sets a serious precedent "you can install malware on your machines, manufacturers - it's OK you won't go out of business".

  • How's the build quality of this machine? compared to Blackbook?

    • +4

      Sorry, what is a blackbook?

        • Ah I see thanks. It is probably easier to phrase how does it compare to a Clevo P series as that is what that is.

We sell ours under the brand name Horize. For reference.

To answer the OPs question. They are really in two different leagues.

The P series is an upgradeable configurable notebook that is quite heavy and thick. This Lenovo is designed for your average to mid range gamer that values portability over performance.

Probably a realistic comparable model would be the P650SE which has similar specs and size.

Quality wise I think both are good.

      • Why are we comparing to a device at double the price?

  • Is Win7 x64 an option?

    • Hi,

Sure we can, but there is no free way to do it. Also as 7 HP no longer available, it would have to be 7 pro which is $199.

      • K, tnx.

    • That seems pretty good. But no SSD and external dvdrw? But I guess bonus bloatware is a plus!

      • You can choose the SSD version with the same -$700

  • Hi, Rep, is it a touch screen?

    • Sorry it is not touchscreen.

  • No chance the gtx860m will run any modern game at 4k without HUGE sacrifices to quality.

    • Agreed. But you can scale by 1/2 or 1/3 for gaming that will give you good performance. But still have that ultra sharp display for Windows.

      • That is true. 4k desktop is amazing

      • Without scaling websites are terribly displayed
Maybe windows 10 to the rescue?
How do people browse websites with such a high res without proper scaling?

  • Any deal on the 512gb SSD ones OP?

Also do you if/when you'll be getting the new y50s with series 9 GTX cards?

    • Hi,

Sorry we do not have any deals on the 512GB model so we do not list that one.

Additionally I don't have any update on the 9 series cards for the Y50 at this stage.

I have this model of the Y50 (except mine came with 4GB VRAM and a 512GB SSD) and it's relatively easy to swap the HDD. I swapped mine for a 1TB Samsung EVO. Amazing laptop and screen quality, pity win 8.1 doesn't support 4k very well and i have to switch font sizes (extra large to normal) when I switch between programs. I ended up defaulting the screen res to 1080 and it works well.

By the way, anyone considering this for FPS shooters, the screen refresh rate is locked at 48Hz and the laptop screen tears when playing Bioschock 3 for example. Having said that, the gameplay's really smooth if you don't mind the tearing.

      • I do play FPS, thanks for the info. I also love RPG's like Skyrim, The Witcher …… how's it go with these games?

        • Haven't tried it with third person perspective RPGs like Skyrim and the Witcher unfortunately but i play isometric 3rd person games like Lara Croft Osiris and How to Survive and the graphics are flawless.

Oh yes, the design of the trackpad on this laptop's a bit loose as well but I got used to it after a week. check out this video review at 3 min 33 sec:

Also talks about the 48Hz screen and some of the resolution issues.

        • @Innamura: tnx m8, good review.

  • Sorry another question OP. Is there a difference between this 2gb gpu model and the 4gb gpu model on the Lenovo Australia website?

    • Hi, sorry we only do it with 2GB.
