WD Red prices seem same as many other places according to Static Ice so only a deal if you also buy the server. Didn't check other products.

    • For ds214play, other stores have been selling around $409 + shipping …

Savings when buy with NAS or Microservers:

      WD Red 2TB: $25.80
      WD Red 3TB: $32.40
      WD Red 4TB: $45.80

    • I'm thinking the TS140 is a better buy for a lightweight server, unless you really are space restricted.

I'm just waiting to hear if they get here in one piece before pulling the trigger.

      • +4

Mine was delivered yesterday in one piece. They literally just slap shipping stickers on the ThinkServer box, but as long as it's not major mishandled you should be OK.

        • Thanks to whomever neg voted. I'll be sure not to share any information that will help other users in future. Selfish mode ON.

        • FYI all OEMs like these package them in a box capable of international shipping, so whacking a label on their box is 100% OK (I didnt neg either)

        • @Gav:
          someone probably clicked it accidentally.
          anyway you're +'ve now :-)

        • @Gav: Thanks Gav. Please PM me if you have any issues (eg DOA). I've checked and it doesn't seem to be possible to add warranty on to an international purchase.

  • Any recommendations for silencing the N54L boxes? I've had mine for a year now and it's too loud.

      Quiet fan swap instructions

    • +1

I've read that for some people it's the psu fan, not the case fan, causing the racket, and they replace the whole psu with a 'pico psu', which has a power brick laptop-style cable with no fans.

  • Can you install Plex media server on the HP Microserver N54L?

    • +3

Yes, I have it running on mine.

    • +2

I installed freenas on mine and run plex media server.

      • I want to do this

Did you follow a step by step guide that you can link

        Thanks

        • I'll be honest and say it's not super easy, especially if you've never spent time in the unix command line.

From memory, I started by watching some freenas installation guides on youtube. I'd try checking out something like that before you consider going down this path: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-mRgeDS8rk

FAR easier than FreeNAS is Xpenology. I tried several times over about 6 months to get FreeNAS fully working just as a very dumbed down basic home type NAS and although I managed to get it working each time something always screwed it up. FreeNAS is a very powerful OS and can be used to run massive enterprise level data stores however I found it way over-complex for a basic home NAS so I highly recommend Xpenology instead. Same hardware, same expectations, same everything and I had Xpenology running within about 30 minutes and has been running perfectly ever since! I run PLEX and the Security Station add-ins and everything just works. Can't recommend Xpenology enough… and I can thank the members of the OzBargain community for recommending it too :)

Just be warned though… the N54L is a killer NAS solution however the CPU easily hits 100% when decoding media for Plex streams. I've had no big problems with it to date but have noticed a few very high res files start to jitter & pause and know that will get worse over time as the resolutions increase more & more.

A very basic Step-by-Step Guide to Xpenology setup:

          1. Download latest ISO boot image file from here: http://www.xpenology.nl/boot-images/
          2. Write it to a USB Memory Device using RUFUS Software (https://rufus.akeo.ie/)
          3. Insert USB Memory Device into any of the USB ports on your N54L or PC (use the internal port for a cleaner, neater NAS)
          4. Boot the machine up and press the down arrow key at the first menu to begin the setup process (only has to be done once for setup, boots automatically after that)
          5. Answer a few basic questions, let it download the latest version of software and about 15-20 minutes later you should have a fully operational NAS!
          6. Create a few Shared Folders, install Plug-Ins like Plex and that's basically it! Sit back, relax and start filling her up with data :)
        • Another option is unraid. I have it on my n54. It's awesome, just looks like a network share to any windows pc. Or Android device or whatever else. Can use it with xbmc/kodi and I assume plex also. Anyway worth checking out, setup difficulty sits between xpenology and freenas.

        • Thanks all for the replies

        • +1

@smokenmirraz: I Recomend Xpenology. Really really good.

    • Can it transcode 1080p as well? Hear a lot of conflicting reports online.

      • I don't think so. Maybe 720p would work. AMD Neo N54 processor is a lower powered one. You need at least Intel 1610T processor do transcoding. This is the problem with Plex Server running on most of the NASs as well. They designed to just serve the files.

I built my own NAS using the a Intel Celeron 1610 and it can transcode 1080p but the processor utilisation goes to 99%

I think you might have to get an i5 to have a smooth 1080p transcoding.

      • N54l of mine does

      • It will certainly serve 1080p streams fine to network players that support 1080p of the format you're sending, without transcoding, assuming your network can handle the bandwidth required. It's only when it needs to convert the 1080p files to a different resolution/format that you'll need to transcode.

For example, my N54L hosts my 1080p mkv files. i stream them over my wired 100mbps network to an intel NUC2820, which has xbmc/kodi installed on it. and as kodi can natively handle 1080p mkvs, no transcoding is required.

I also streamed 720p mkv tv shows from my n54l to my girlfriend's laptop in canada. running plex server on the n54l, and plex home theatre on the laptop. again, as the laptop could play 720p mkvs, no transcoding was required. We didn't try 1080p as the laptop at the other end was on wifi and we weren't sure what spec the wifi was. I'd recommend eithe rvery strong clear line of sight 5ghz wifi n, or wifi AC for 1080p streams.

        • In your case you do not need transcoding. Your N54L is simply serving the file.

The original question from "eecan" is to check if the N54L can transcode 1080p videos.

For example, if you are trying to stream a 1080p movie with AC3 or DTS audio to a Chromecast, your PLEX server would have to transcode the movie or the chromecast would not play it. In that case N54L cannot to that. If you have a PC/Laptop with Plex player install then N54L would just serve the file.

        • +1

          @dealspider:

Agreed. I've just come across a few instances where people didn't understand what transcoding was and actually only needed it to serve files.

N54L Cheaper here and it has got 4GB RAM

  • Hi Rep,

Special on Asus AC68U router please ;)

N54L used to sell for $229 2 years ago.
    Now $269
I understand dollar has come down.
But still don't think its smart buy.
    Anyway its my personal opinion.

    • +4

Yes, I'm glad I got my two N54Ls for $229 as they seem to be appreciating with time! Great investment :) At this rate they might be worth thousands in a year or two :p

    • +2

couldn't reach $229, but have provided an ozbargain exclusive code to get $10 Off N54L or $20 Off Gen8 Microservers.
If you add one 1 x 4TB WD Red hard drive you can save $45.80 off the order.

  • Hi rep , this is netgear not HP .
    HP GS205 5 Port Gigabit Switch - $19

    N54L NOW $259
    Gen8 G1610T NOW $409

    • As mentioned above, BudgetPC have the N54L for this price as well, but with 4gb of ram instead of 2gb. However, their postage is about $10 more (to my postcode).

If I were looking to buy a new microserver, I'd probably pay the extra $10 for the extra ram.

      http://budgetpc.com.au/computers-servers/branded-servers/tow…

Adding purchase of internal disks into the mix and things get a bit more complicated though ;)

  • Rep when will you have pickup?

    • Good question. I don't have a definite answer for you right now, but this option is still in our to do list, so hopefully this option can be available sooner than later.

  • Any chance of a deal on the ReadyNAS 316?

Nope, we don't have stock of them atm.

      • ReadyNAS 316 deal would be nice.

  • Any chance of adding the HP 1810-24G switch to the list of 20% discount switches ?

    • have done it for you, please try

  • No Standard 3Tb HDD, Seagate 7200?

    • only WD Red this time.

  • which would be the better buy?

    HP 1410-24G-R 24 port Unmanaged Switch - $109
    or
Netgear JGS524AU Prosafe 24 Port Gigabit Rackmount Switch - $125

    • Much the same from the ones I've used. Plug them in, turn them on and forget about them. Simple. If you don't need to rack it then just save the $16 worth of rack ears and get the HP!

      • thanks so between the Netgear and HP switches they seem similar. is it worth getting the managed switches?

        • You only really need a 'managed' switch if you need to control, restrict & monitor the flow or traffic through it which is handy for businesses etc. An 'unmanaged' Switch is just a 'free-for-all' which is all you're going to need for a home environment. Save your money and just get the unmanaged switch.

        • +1

One (very good) reason to get a managed switch is this. If you have mixed speed clients on your LAN, all higher speed clients will throttle back to below the speed offered by the lowest speed client as soon as the lowest speed client starts transmitting. This is due to Ethernet flow control conflicting with TCP/IP flow control. This will affect you badly if there are continuous file transfer happening on your LAN. Experiments have found a guaranteed method to avoid this: turn off Ethernet flow control using a managed switch.

For unmanaged switches, there are three ways to avoid this. 1. Turn off Ethernet flow control on all network adaptors (but it does not always work — it didn't for me; not possible with most network appliances); 2. Upgrade all clients to GB (may not be possible for all network devices); 3. Use two GB switches: all GB clients on one switch, all low speed clients on another, and connect a cable between the two switches to form one LAN (guaranteed to work).

E.g. On a LAN with one unmanaged switch, typical file transfer speed between two gigabit clients: 60 MB/s. As soon as a Fast Ethernet client starts transmitting on the LAN (not necessarily to the two GB clients), the GB clients' transfer rate will drop to 3-6 MB/s. More than 1 Fast Ethernet client transmitting? The two GB clients will be lucky to reach 1 MB/s.

Source 1: http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/lanwan/lanwan-features/30212-… Source 2: My own experiment.

        • @alvian: Thanks for the advice, bought the 24 Port Gigabit Switch and could use the current switch for any devices on Fast Ethernet then plug that to the Gigabit Switch.

    • HP has better warranty service, should you need it.

  • I recently bought the N54L and am very happy with it as a Myth TV Front and Backend. The N54L price at $259 is the same as what I bought it for; but the savings on the disks could make the deal sweeter. I had got my disks from Officework; when they had those specials a month or so ago.

    • I did not know Officework sells internal hard disk! What was the price you got? I am looking for 4TB disks.

      • They weren't internal. They were external WDs, which I converted to internal by taking out of their case and modifying some flags on the drive firmware. They were on special - 3TB WD for $99.

  • Hi Rep

If I buy a NAS or HP server, and a switch and a HD, can I have discount on both the switch or HD? or Only 20% off one of them?

    Thanks.

    • just one of them.

      cheers

  • Has anyone used the Gen 8 G2020T to play 1080 direct to a TV, got the N54L and it jumps and lags a little.

Wondering if I should upgrade while this lasts

  • Dear Rep
Has the deal expired? I want to buy a Netgear 314 NAS and tried both HP 24 port J9803 and hard disk, both get no discount.
Do I have to use special code?

    'Bargain!' does not work.

    Thanks

    • Yeah caught me of guard too. Sale said til 29th the other day. If you add to the cart. The discount still applies even though the ad now says 459

      • Hi guys,

Please PM me what you need, i'll see what can be done

        regards
        SE

        • Thank you for your offer. Unfortunately I thought the deal has expired, and have ordered via E-bay yesterday. Despite the 20% off I still paid more than from your deal. I am sorry about that, and should buy earlier next time.

By the way, I don't know how to PM. Could you teach me or point me to the information how to do it?

          Many thanks.

        • @seniordoc:

No worries mate, i just sent you a PM with more information
