Still doesn't beat Prepaid Encore Cap - Getting 3.8 GB for $50 a month.

No longer available for new customers and they're trying to get me to switch. NEVER!

    • +4

Under the older Weekend+ prepaid I can get 5GB on a $50 recharge. It's a shame data allowances have gone backwards.

      • Wow, just Google the Weekend + plan and it looks awesome. It's insane how in 2011 you can get 5GB with Telstra prepaid recharge and now you can only get 3.8GB (and it's already considered a lot in current market!)

        • Yeah. On one hand I'm thankful no ones forcing me to swap plans and I've benefitted somewhat for getting on a smart phone plan early on, on the other hand it's a bit frustrating to see that in a field where the technology has advanced at such a rapid rate, the back end infrastructure struggles to keep up and they've had to scale back data allowances to cope rather than expanding outwards.

Hopefully in a year or two we'll reach a point where the data allowances are back to where they were years ago as the backend continues to improve.

        • Disclaimer: I am a Telstra employee but am not speaking on behalf of the company.

From my discussions with some colleagues who are "in the know" - 4G data per MB is extremely expensive to provide.
The plan changes are evidence that it is getting cheaper, but the 5GB for $50 was definitely geared to a saturated 3G market of that time, not a 4G (or 700Mhz 4G 'X') like we have today.

In time, you will see 4G becoming affordable, however by that stage, the market would be saturated; 5G will be the latest and greatest advancement; and the price per MB for 5G will be very similar.

Personally, I believe Telstra moving from 10c to 3c per MB over your allowance was the best thing for the mobile market.

Also, use Data packs if you go over your Plan's value, if you add them on mid-cycle, you only get charged Pro-rata (be sure to turn them off them before you next cycle starts). Meaning that a 250MB $5 data pack for 10 days will only be charged at $1.66, representing a 0.006 per MB value.

This is because a few years ago there was no way, with the speed limitations, you could use that much data unless you were using the mobile internet almost everyday all day long. As speeds increased so did the awareness of the telco's that it was costing them a heap of profit by offering loads of bandwidth they then HAD to supply…
Was easier to offer plans with 3G(+) speeds and only 500Mb to use. That meant that you needed to purchase more or have HUGE bills when you went over (Iphones in Australia was a good example with the telco's showing customer what you can do in shop and then giving them just 500Mb to use… $20,000 bills were not unheard of in the first few months)…
I remember when mobile internet first came out that I had a whopping 10Gb to use per month and only 2G speeds to use. Now I have 4G+ speeds I'm limited to 1.5Gb… Sux big time…

        • That and the user base was smaller, which more people still on their old Nokias and the like so they had lass need to hold people back. That said, I could get through it back then without too much effort still if I was watching a lot of YouTube and the like…service was on a fairly solid 3G connection so speeds while not as good as I typically get today, weren't too bad.

I'm on this and I love that you can call international number using your cap credit ($950 if you recharge $50 a month) too! Other plans might start to offer more data but none of them seems to give you international callings except Vodafone.

      • omg why didn't I think of this sooner?? Never burn through my $950 of calls but hadn't considered using it for international calls until you just mentioned it. Thanks!!!

      • Virgin also allows international calling with the included cap

      • Really? I had no idea international calls could be made me with the $950 "fake money" credit you get with a $50 encore topup.

Good to know, although I tend to just use Facetime or Facetime audio these days anyway.

Starts on the 9th of April. (Not that obvious from the post start date)

    • +8

I've listed the deal as starting on the 9th of April? Is there something else I'm doing wrong?

      • not at all, in fact, we do appreciate to your contribution, 1+ for the Like ;)

      • +1

You juts might want to add to the top of your text
"From 9 April……" just so it's clear. But great post!

      • Nope, you did nothing wrong.

I didn't notice the "From 9 Apr" the first time I read the post, so I scrolled down to see if someone had left a comment on when it started. They hadn't, so I clicked through to check it and started to write that comment. Then I double checked your post to see if you put it in and noticed in the second time down, looking extra carefully this time round.

I thought it wasn't particularly noticeable, so put it in a comment in case anyone did as I did, missed it next to the ad in the post and scrolled down to the comments to see.

My intention was exactly the same as @supabrudda's clarification of my post

You juts might want to add to the top of your text
"From 9 April……" just so it's clear. But great post!

  • I am on the old $60 one where you get 3gb then use the credit to buy another 3gb happy days!

  • +6

It'd be great if they add 'em to existing plans (like what they did for broadband customers). It's a while 'til my contract's up.

  • +1

Is this for new customers only? I literally just upgraded to the $95 plan last week…

  • going to try and get my plan changed from the old $95 to the new $95.

    wish me luck

    • $50 early recontract fee, plus any handset repayments you have left.

      • why?
        same rate plan, same repayment…
ill get around it, always have.
have a chat with live chat……………….

        • If you're still in contract, what astrodude is correct unfortunately :(
Hope you can get around it though!

        • By all means give livechat a go!

        • @astrodude:
currently they have no details, ill go back to them in april
thanks for the new plan deets!

        • @tuzii:

The guy I spoke to said he had heard the details, but didn't have firm details on who would be offered the data.

        • @justcallmeboss:
          thanks for the confimation.
          Goodbye soon Telstra!

    • I think you can upgrade your plan whilst in contract, but not downgrade?

      • I downgraded and was not charged fee or even have contract date changed, they were really helpful over live chat. Couldn't do more for me, I was 13 months into my old BYO plan (55 bucks/month I think it used to be with 1GB data) and downgraded to the new 'small' plan with is 2GB/month for $45. I even got 25GB to blow for first month, this just expired.

      http://www.news.com.au/technology/gadgets/telstra-announces-…

Please refer to tweet attached in the article. Seem to suggest that you might be - I will hold off contacting them till Telstra announce formally.

    • When did you signup? I'm just going to wait till the end of the year when I can get a new phone through the new phone feeling anyway…

  • +1

I wish they would upgrade people who's been with them for a while, just like they did with their adsl and cable plans.

    • They do you just need to contact them, I guess they don't change peoples contracts without them knowing. You need to be proactive and contact them to do so.

      • +2

No I mean, for the mobile contracts, add more free data like they did with cable and adsl.

        • yeah, they do. Start a live chat on the 9th when this goes live and they'll happily move you to their new version of the same plan without disrupting your contract end date.

        • @DarkRyoushii:

Really? I heard it cost $50 as well…

        • @squaredonut: nope, there was no cost to me. Just hit them up on live chat

        • @Infinite Monkee:

I should ask clearly , were you on a post paid contract? And how did you ask them? Also I thought it wasn't ready till 9th?

        • @squaredonut: yes and still am on post paid contract, I just hit them on live chat saying I see the plans you have now have changed and are better than what I have. Can you move me to the new plan? That was it, they said sure thing no problem and because I am 'valued Telstra' customer they even waived the recontract fee. Me contract end date was not changed either :D now I am on the small ($45/month) plan which is cheaper and has more data. NB: These current plans came out like a month and half ago.

        • @Infinite Monkee:

I just asked, nope, wont let me, unless i move form
$70 to $95, ha what a joke, hate telstra

        • @squaredonut: that's rubbish :s try again on live chat say tonight, you may get another person. Customer service may be little hit or miss.

  • +1

Talking on live chat now, first response was "is it on Telstra website?"

    • +4

Why would you bother asking now, it hasn't come into effect yet?!

      • -5

        Why not?

      • It's already in effect has been for a while as limited offer for new customers. Maybe the difference is it will be permanent now.

Hurry, offer ends 27 April 2015.

        vs this deal

New customers on the $55 Mobile Accelerate BYO plans normally get 1.5GB of data. The bonus means they get 2GB extra, taking the total monthly inclusion up to 3.5GB

  • What are they offering for loyal prepaid subscribers?

    • +9

      is this a joke?

    • +3

They aint going to offer us anything mate. We are the bottom of the barrel in Telstra's eyes.

    • They're offering to not kick us off the grandfathered sick deals we're on.

  • Doesn't sound like anything extra for those on the family and friends plans

    • +2

Staff plans will never get these kinds of benefits

      • +6

The beatings will continue until morale improves.

    • +2

I get better value out of the F&F plan anyway given that excess data comes off the cap.

This month I've used nearly 6 gigs of data and it won't cost me any extra.

  • I got this bonus about a month back..I'm on $45 BYO plan, got an extra 500mb and then a bonus 1 gb. Sounds the same to me unless I'm missing something..?

They also gave me out of the blue an extra 25gb for the first month bizarrely.

    • 25gb for the first month is a thing

      • Yeah but weirdly my wife didn't get it and I did and we both switched at the same time.

        • I got 120gb for my first month! Needless to say, I smashed it all!

        • they messed up then as your wife should have got the 25gig as well, all new phones come with 25gig on the first month.

  • Any change to the $35 staff plan?

    • +3

      no such thing, theres a $10/$39 or a $40

    • you mean $39 or the $5.50?

    • 39

  • Looks like I'm due for an upgrade but not until Oct this year :(

  • +1

You can get the $55 BYO plan now if you like. They are running a free 1gb bonus until April 27. I just signed up to the $55 BYO plan, come with 1.5GB + 1GB bonus if you sign before 27th of April and I chose the extra 1gb instead of $1000 worth of calls to make 3.5gb. Pretty happy with that!

Link here for those interested in it - https://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/plans-and-rates?swi…

Its the exact same price and same data for the $55 BYO plan without having to wait until April 9!

  • Are there actually that many telstra employees in this thread or are people just hitting that checkbox accidentally?

    • Yes, Telstra hire thousands of people and many ozbargainers probably become employees purely due to the staff discounts. ;)

  • Will be interesting to see if they do update existing plan holders without recontracting, there is evidence that supports both (that they will only add the data to new customers or it will be both for old and new customers)

    We shall see soon enough.

  • I can't stand these announcements without all supporting information. A company like telstra should have prepared a well-writen press release.

I'm on a M business easy share plan and hope I'll get an extra gig - I often go over my 2.5Gb…

  • man i just signed up last month. Am i still able to get this deal @ $55/month

  • +2

Once again existing customers on a contract left behind.

  • The tweet on this post confirms existing customers (ie Me) gets a free upgrade!

    http://www.news.com.au/technology/gadgets/telstra-announces-…

However, this announcement doesn't confirm it at all:

    http://crowdsupport.telstra.com.au/t5/Announcements/New-Data…

Let's hope they'll honour the tweet!

    • Looks like the initial tweet was in error/confused employee.
Following tweets from Angela make it clear that this does not apply to existing customers.

  • Now, let's hope that they do something with the ridiculous $200 for 12GB recharge prices for 3G+WiFi modems.

  • looks like it's better to get a S6 Edge from Telstra on the $130 plan?

  • -1

    Woolworth Mobile - 5GB for 26$ lol

    • -1

On optus network and at closer to 2g speeds? Thanks but no thanks.

      • -1

        And poor coverage…

    • You're billed per MB which as a rule of thumb ends up at about half the usage. You end up with about 2.5gb.

  • +1
  • I tried to update my $70 plan while still on the byo contract. Spoke to Telstra online. Got nowhere as they said I was still on contract. Thanks Telstra after being a Loyal customer. When I jumped shipped from Optus, they would always update the plan when I was on contract. Just from this, Im jumping ship again to Amaysim when my contract is over in a few months. Premium Im paying aint worth the service.

  • Don't think I saw this being mentioned on the link nor could I seem to find it on Telstra's site. Do they charge data per MB or per KB? $45 plan, whilst a downgrade from 3GB to 2GB, is pretty tempting to me since my phone supports 4GX so I'd get better speed and possibly better reception (currently using voda and it is pretty good where I live and where I work).

  • So do existing customers really get nothing?

    • As an existing customer on a byo $70 plan, I went into the store today and was given the extra data without having to recontract, upgrade or change plans. I was not charged $50 recontract fee and didn't have to change my contract start date. Very happy to save the $30 a month I usually spend on a data pack. Thanks telstra.

  • +1

I was just looking through the Telstra website… the casual accelerate plan is $55 and not $45 as stated in the OP.

Might be better off getting the Prepaid Freedom $40 plan, you get 2GB charged by KB, $550 credit (with $40 accessable for credit me2u or google play) and can get the anytime bonus which offers unlimited txt to standand Aus numbers). Exactly the same as Accelerate plan only cheaper…

Also, according to whirlpool, automatic schedule recharge can help extend the prepaid freedom from 28 days to 31 days…

Based on all this, I reckon the accelerate $45 plan is out…

  • +2

I got my contract updated today - got the extra bonus data as per new plan without re contracting. Had made numerous calls though. Finally got someine that made it happen
