I will get one just for the metal plates(to use with the +Drive mount) :) Thanks OP

    • +1

any ideas on where to buy just the plates? i saw them on amazon but they are $10US + shipping each

      • you get 2 with the mount so it's cheaper to just buy more mounts

        • thats true, but i dont really want to spend this much on a tiny bit of metal

        • +1

          @Tm15:
I would assume it is just a thin strip of ferromagnetic metal anyway - couldn't be too hard to buy a sheet for a few bucks and cut or punch out squares or circles then use some double sided tape to attach.

  • Saw this on DS ebay on Sunday for $16 ($12.8 after CTECH20 discount code).

    • +3

The catch was you had to pay $4.95 postage as click and collect was not available.
If you can get into a store this is a cheaper deal.

    • This is now $30 on eBay :-(

  • +1

Can these be angled towards you (left or right, up or down) so you can see the screen easily or do they sit flat against the vent? I can't find an answer on the interweb.

    • there is no tilt adjustment plus there is no clearance for tilt if you mount a big phone on it

  • I doubt they can be angled As per the rhe pics. I use the actual vents to adjust the angle.

  • Anyone know why the drive mount is more expensive than the drive mount with an iphone 5 case?

    • +1

      Never-mind.

      Comprehension fail.

  • +1

Any deals on the Logitech +Drive mount instead?

    • -1

search for it on the Dick Smith eBay store you can pick it up for ~$24 mate!

      • Lies

  • Can this break my vent?

    • +13

May be it can..but there are lot other cheaper ways if you really want to.. :-)

    • If the vent slats are very weak they could, but if they were that thin it probably wouldnt hold and just fall off (speaking from experience because i have one and i like mine)

  • +1

Sorry. I can't tell but does this come with a metal plate or do we have to buy that separately?

    Thanks

    • +1

      It comes with it

      • +1

It comes with a small square metal disc to attach to your phone, not the full on metal backed case.

    • +1

it actually comes with 2 metal plates: one black and one gray

  • +4

It works pretty well on the Nexus 5 (naked). It doesnt need the metal plate.

    • Thanks. I was just wondering that.

  • +1

    stupid question
Is this magnetic gonna cause any kind of damage to the phone?

    • I want to know as well. don't magnets cause degradation to the phone's battery?

    • +1

I know that the magnet will render your phones magnetometer (compass) useless. Most likely navigation will be harder as your phone isn't able to accurately work out which way you're facing.

I think I may have permanently damaged my phones compass by using a magnetic clasp case, as it seems to think that North is West and I simply cannot get the phone to calibrate it.

      • Anyone with this can confirm these pitfalls?

Would defeat the purpose of having this if it makes our GPS ineffective

        • I have the plus drive and I use GPS on my phone all the times, never had any problem getting the location.

        • I can confirm that it does no affect the GPS in anyway. I have the case + drive version and that little thin magnet is super strong.

I originally was going to get this vent mount but opted out as my vents are in an awkward position. Best to put your phone there to try out before you buy.

        • +4

I use this on my iphone 6 and have no complaints, honestly the best phone holder on the market and the magnets are strong and hold the phone, even when drifting.

          @dishak:

I don't think anyone has picked up on the last few words of your comment ;)

        • +1

@dishak: Those rare cars you have still for sale?

        • +1

@dishak: that's the true test for any phone holder. Glad it passes!

      • maybe u were in limbo? And still didn't forget to check ozb? Haha

      • not true! it works well, i use it everyday with Google maps and Tomtom on my iphone 6 plus. Once your car is moving, front is where your car is heading, no need for an accurate compass

    • The plate itself will not, but be aware that if you use NFC for charging or otherwise, these plates can interfere with that.

  • Will this work if your mobile has a plastic cover?

    • As far as I know it came with a metal plate which you can stick on the plastic case as long as it is a flat surface.

    • I have the metal plate inside my Nokia530. As long as it's centered, the case clips up fine.

    • I placed the metal plate inside the cover of my Blackberry and it held it just fine. Likewise with a third party case on my Nexus 5.

    • Yes

    • Not so sure it will actually. I have a CX-7 where the side vent is like that and it wouldn't attach to that.

  • Is there a magnetic case for the s5 or do you guys have a cheap case and stick pads on it?
Might consider one of these but does it damage the phone being magnetic?

    • will not do any damage to phone as far as I researched. It even says it inside the instruction booklet :)

They sell logitech cases that have a magnet on the back called Protection+ or case+, look them up that might be what you're after!

  • Will it 100 %?secure my phone to the metal plate

  • Grabbed one for my wife - worth testing at $16 pickup.

    • +5

IMHO if it picks up your wife for $16 then it is worth the test.

  • Not available anywhere near me in Sydney.
    Pass…

  • If I was to purchase this today as says today only but collected tomorrow will it still be same price when I collect, can't remember if you purchase from these guys you pay in advance or pay at store so wondering if cost more next day

    • +1

Don't wait for them to call you about pickup or wait until tomorrow. I've tried to buy loads of really cheap deals from dick smith and I've found the only way to get your deal is to go immediately and ignore the information in the email about waiting for a reply.

They will sell your stock to the others who come first or they will take it for themselves. Click and collect is mostly pointless for low priced quick moving deals.

      • That's why it's better to pay on ordering rather than on pickup as they are likely to cancel unpaid orders before the paid ones as less admin involved.

        • So you can order and pay and collect tomorrow? Or can't you not pay and only can collect and pay when collecting can't make it to store today

        • +1

          @bwatt99:

I wish I could follow your post to be able to answer but so many double negatives in that question that I'm lost!

But - yes - of course you can pay and collect another day.

Been using the driv + mount on my iphone 5 for nearly a year now. Best mount system. Its really strong easy to use no hassle and fiddling around trying to put the phone in the holder. Havent used the + trip but deffs recommend the whole + system in general.

    • if the phone + case is too heavy, the +trip wont hold the phone like the driv+

  • +1

I bought a similar one off of eBay for $4. Is there really any difference?

  • Thanks op, got one.

  • Looks interesting. Can anyone confirm how many magnets it comes with (2 would be awesome - one for my phone, one for wives phone) and also could I put the magnet under the back cover of the phone so it looks neater???

    • Never mind. Looks like it comes with 2 magnets and they can be mounted behind the cover. Bought one…thx op.

      • It comes with one magnet (the clip) and a piece of metal that you can stick onto the back of the case (recommended) or if your phone can handle it you can insert it into the back cover. However if you do that, the hold is not as strong, and it can just fall off the magnet as you're driving.

Additionally if you did insert it into the back of your S4 like I did, there is a bulge anyway so its not really much difference about the "neatness"

    • if you want to reuse it

      then don't stick it on..

just put it inside your case..

      or use sticktape

else you need to buy more, if u buy new phone

  • ive been looking for this for awhile.. thanks OP !!!!

    For those that are interested
Another similar deal from Telstra: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Belkin-Micro-USB-Essentials-Bundl…

Belkin Window Mount + Belkin Micro USB cable + 12V Charger + Belkin 1000mAH power bank = $22

(although 1000 capacity is not that useful considering it can not full charge a smart phone…$22 still not a bad price)

    • didn't know telstra have ebay store

  • Bought the Drive+ mount from them with the 20% off. It was down to $29.95 on clearance then got it for $23, free click and collect same day! Very happy.

Using it with my iPhone 6 in the Apple leather case with extra metal pad on the back. Works excellent!

  • Is the drive + still available from them was looking to get one for s5 seems they have iPhone one

    • Doesn't look like it. I'd grab one too.

  • Just out of interest are these things just for iPhone?

  • Will this work on a htc one m8 with out the magnetic pad but with a phone case?

  • +3

Got this a few days ago during the eBay VIP sale. It works but if you have an iPhone 6 plus with a case, there is a chance that the phone will fall off if you mount it vertically because its heavy. I have a Spigen Metal Neo case and could only mount mine horizontally, but still not very strongly held in place and a big bump in the road will probably have it falling off again.

    • Thanks, got the 6 Plus and was wondering if it may be too big/heavy.

    • Cheers for the info mate. My OnePlus One would probably do the same. I wish if they had the Drive+ on sale, apparently the magnet is much stronger.

    • Me and wife use ours with our Iphone 6+ phones every day and it only falls if you don't center it properly.Once the magnet is centered with the metal plate there is no way it can fall!

      • +1

Yeah I'm sure it would hold if you are using it without a case and have the metal bit directly attached to the back of the phone. But lots of people like me will have a case and if you place the metal bit between the case and the phone, you lose a lot of the magnetic strength. I guess if you had a thin case it might also be alright, but with my Spigen case, it falls off as soon as I drive off, if I have it vertical. I am also using both metal plates to make sure I get full contact with the magnet. I also got another for my dad's Note 3, he doesn't use a case but you can slip the plate between the backplate and battery, and it holds really tight, so it works well there.

        • I just use thin-clear belkin cases and stick the metal at the back. You can't blame the product if you don't use it properly :)

        • +2

@GregFiona: Not blaming the product, simply helping others by sharing my experience. Some people will have thicker cases and won't want to have the sticker outside as it looks ugly, thought it might be useful for them to know before buying.

        • @exile: I completely agree with you exile! You do the right thing pointing out potential issues, I personally think a thick case is uglier(and not safe to use with the metal place inside the case) than a thin case with this thin metal plate at the back, but that's just me(and my wife of course) :)

        • +1

@GregFiona: Yeah I know what you mean, whenever I take the case off it always amazes me just how thin and nice it looks without it on, but after a smashed glass incident with my 4S I decided it might be safer to have a decently thick case on, I do get use to it after a while, but each to their own I guess. :)

  • +1

Does anyone know if these 2 are the same mount, one just with a case included (and for cheaper)?

    case+mount $39.98

    +mount $54.98

or are they actually different mounts?

    • +1

      Just called Dickies.

It's the same mount it's just on clearance (even though it's not listed as clearance). They used to be $70.

So if you can find one, $32 for the +Drive and just throw/give the case away.

  • +1

One thing I've wondered about any 'vent mount' system is,
say on a hot day - will having the air conditioning blow directly onto the phone over a long drive cause any problems to the phone? I haven't used this type myself but it looks like the phone is pretty close to the strongest part of the airflow.
