As interesting as this is, it was announced a while ago, effective today, and is not really a bargain as such….. forums?

  • +1

    move to forummmmm

  • +5

I can see ticket prices will increase

    • +4

They already have. I've seen Mel->GC sale prices go from $105 -> $125
The food on any domestic flight is barely worth it (the last few times I was the lucky recipient of a cheese & tomato sandwich).

  • +6

All part of the premium prices they want to charge. So increased ticket price for a free sandwich and coffee.

What's the deal with the complimentary plonk? I flew with Virgin yesterday, 6.30pm flight, no complimentary alcohol whatsoever. Same deal last year when I flew early evening. I know it says complimentary wine etc on the website, but it has never eventuated for me :(

    • usually only for flights between mel/syd/bne/per

though sometimes they forget altogether :|

      • I flew Mel-Syd yesterday and Adl-Syd last year. I asked last year if the wine was complimentary given the website info, and they said no, I had to pay for it :(

        • I flew Melb-Syd earlier this month, a 7pm take off at Melb and was give a free fat yak and some cheese+crackers… sounds like its dependent on the attendant, it is in small print in their menu's though…

    • +1

I initially read this as "6:30am" and thought that was an odd time to start drinking… I should really stop reading OzB drunk.

  • +2

Their entertainment is done through your mobile/tablet. Need to download app before boarding. You use their own wifi on board the plan to access the entertainment network. I travelled back on Virgin over labour day weekend and found that out.

  • +2

they removed saver lite fares and make you book the saver fare now ($20 extra from Adelaide to Melbourne)
so you are paying for the checked bags as carry on only is no longer an option when booking.

as for the food and drink, its always been hit and miss between adelaide and melbourne, so nothing really new from my pov.

    • +2

Yeah, I imagine many people are actually going to be worse off as opposed to this being an outright bargain.

    • +1

Which sucks because I don't need food or drink when flying from MEL - ADL and I only ever take carry on with me when I frequently take the route. All it has done for me is be worse off financially when flying with them

      • +1

me too, regular MEL-ADL for me also…. and we will be looked at by other passengers with our carry on now!

They'll be thinking 'why not just check it in'.
I don't want to check in my 7kg- bag which I can easily walk off the plane and out of the airport. Waiting for bags at the carousel is not convenient.

  • +4

damn, as someone with a velocity gold card who got free luggage and a feed in the lounge before the flight anyway, i didnt really care :D
now i wont get to save the extra $20 or so by going saver lite :~(

Pretty much a dupe, not really a deal since it will be the norm now.

  • +1

Virgin Australia pissed me off so much that I gave up on maintaining my platinum status which I had for years. Not saying qantas is any better, but still better than the whole shit Australian domestic lot.

  • Does this include flights with an existing booking?

    • +20

Nope. Everyone else will get it, but when they see you booked before yesterday all the other people on the flight will perform a choreographed musical production about how they get snacks and baggage and you don't.

      • Haha!

  • -1

What a change, they refused to sell me a bottle of water because I didn't have the correct change and also refused to serve me water.

    • I don't understand why people are so neg-happy? I just shared my experience.

  • +2

Permanent change of policy, not a bargain

  • +8

Wow free food and alcohol on a plane ?

You mean like ALL airlines used to do for free not that long ago ?

Do these idiotic airlines think our memories are that short we don't remember a time when this was totally normal ??
Now it's supposed to be a great deal ? LOL

    • +11

Used to be normal to spend a weeks wages on a return flight between capital cities. Just saying.

    • +4

Free. And in other news, Virgin ticket prices increased by $40

    • +1

That's right but flights were super expensive back then remember.

  • +1

This is more of a PSA than a bargain.

    • +1

Really? Pffffft not a bargain then by any stretch. I'll buy the basic fare like always and bring a sandwich with me.

  • +4

Lol I love it how people can't go a 1hr interstate flight without food haha, maybe it's something about being up in the sky, because it makes me hungry too…however I'm tight, and take hungry jacks on the plane beforehand - much better than what they offer on the plane!

    • +5

I'd always assumed it was just to keep the passengers occupied, lest the entire plane degrades into lord-of-the-flies style chaos.

      • +4

Which is exactly what will happen if you try to eat that whopper next to me.

    • +4

Clearly you're not from Perth. By the time we get off the plane at Tullamarine we're so emaciated we collapse right there on the tarmac.

  • why does this deal have 5 reports ?

    • +2

because people think it should be on the forums rather than a deal.

    • +1

Maybe Tiger isnt liking this deal?

      • VHA (virgin) own Tiger

        • Who owns Vodafone? :)

        • @eug:
          you win

  • How does this effect me if I've already booked a saver lite fare without baggage. Do I have baggage now or is it just for new bookings?

  • tiger vs jetstar
    virgin vs qantas

  • I think this is a good news instead a bargain.

  • +2

This is not comparable to the Qantas offering. Virgin's is going to be a snack only service, they're still keeping the onboard menu which you have to pay for! Qantas offer hot meals and special meals on their flights during breakfast, lunch and dinner. Virgin's included F&B is vastly inferior to Qantas.

  • Not a bargain but just a change in policy,

  • "Customers can still order alternative food and beverage options through the on-board retail menu."

I think the term free food is deceiving, as there still seems to be some paid options

  • I recently read that Virgin had lowered their on-board luggage allowance and that they now include your handbag & laptop bag into this weight.

  • of course the prices will go up. nothing comes for free.

  • No deal. You're ultimately paying for it in price rises. Please move to forums.

  • that crap they serve aint worth talkin abt

  • +1

So they are reducing the options I have to travel at low cost, and compensating me with things I may not want or need.

Not a deal, in fact it's the opposite of a deal.

    • it's a scam, not a deal. I want to pay $20 less thanks and not have my bag checked in or a shitty biscuit

  • +1

the last time (not long ago) I was given a 'cream-cheesy' sandwich on Virgin it was a horrible sloppy yucky mess - nearly made me spew :/

  • What I cant understand is why dont they serve virgin cola on these planes?

    http://www.tutor2u.net/blog/images/uploads/virgin_cola.jpg

  • http://i58.tinypic.com/442ds.jpg (photo of their complimentary snack)

Gotta read the fine print at http://www.virginaustralia.com/au/en/experience/on-board-the…

Guests receive a complimentary inflight snack and selected non-alcoholic beverages on the following flights:

    Between Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane
Between Sydney and the Gold Coast
Between Melbourne and Adelaide or Hobart
    Between Melbourne and Kalgoorlie

Brisbane to Cairns is not included

    • Thats better than the 1/3 of a crustless cheese and tomato sandwich i got on Syd-Mel, on the return leg it was even worse, same 1/3 with Lettuce and cucumber or some crap.
