MUZO Cobblestone Streaming Music Player $40.99 USD Inc Shipping @ Pandawill

MUZOPW

Hi all,

I just finished my review of the MUZO Cobblestone and posted it on Home Theatre Life. I've managed to get a good coupon for my readers to get $15 USD off the normal price so shared here if people are interested. Price is $60 USD on Amazon.

Good alternative to something far more expensive like SONOS.

The MUZO Cobblestone is a network media player that is capable of streaming music from a variety of sources such as your phone, DLNA servers, or online services such as TuneIn Radio. Other services such as Spotify should be coming soon. It also looks EXACTLY like a pebble - they've nailed the look and texture, it's uncanny.

    This one, I believe.

I have loved my SONOS system since I bought my first ZP back in 2007 but I never understood why the several alternatives released over the years couldn't ever quite compete, I mean how hard can it be in this day & age? These Cobblestones look to be an excellent alternative to those of us who want to connect them to existing Hifi gear or even just use them with $15 computer speakers however it's a shame the review couldn't include proper multi-zone performance with multiple units as this is what SONOS has always done very, very well and has always been the differentiator.

I find it ironic that SONOS has only really exploded and become more accepted to the masses since they released their convenient 'all-in-one' speaker based players four or so years ago yet this little fella has no speakers built-in! Could this be a DIY Hifi system renaissance afterall? Gee I hope so. One of these Cobblestones, an inexpensive Tripath Amp and a pair of Voll bookshelfs would make a very decent little new system indeed! Prepare to press all those old RCA leads back into service people ;)

Hmmm, although I have a house full of SONOS and know these will never ever connect to the proprietary SONOS network I'm still very tempted to try one of these.

Yeah, I totally agree. I would have loved to have tested out the multi-room support but I'll probably buy another one as they are so cheap and update the review.

I loved the fact that I was able to use speakers that I chose. That meant I was able to connect up a portable speaker when I wanted to move the unit with me, or connect it to my better speakers when I put it in its final spot.

      • Agreed. The SONOS 'Play' series of all-in-one units are really, really good and I own a few of them myself however their popularity in recent years has definitely indicated that the masses seem to care more about wireless convenience rather than sound quality to an extent. This is an interesting phase we're going through because it means many people who have 'upgraded' to SONOS have then sold their very decent Amps & Speakers on Gumtree & eBay so there are many excellent bargains to be had. I picked up a pair of Dali Concepts and a very nice Pioneer 2-channel Amp in close to mint condition a few weeks ago for $50 off Gumtree. Absolutely nothing wrong with any of it and those Dalis are amazing sounding bookshelfs worth $600+ when new. All the owner really needed to do was get one of these Cobblestones and they would've had a far better sounding system for a tenth of the price of their SONOS gear… oh, but that's right, wires are so hard to live with ;)

  • Hey Darksythe, do you know if this offer will expire?

    • +1

The deal expires in a week. If there is enough demand, I can ask if I can get the coupon extended but I can't guarantee success.

  • Do how does this work? Is it not a speaker?

    • You plug in speakers via 3.5mm or RCA plugs. It handles all the smarts.

    • +2

No, it's just a receiver. It does all the technical stuff and is controlled via an app on your phone. You tell it to receive internet radio or pull music off a NAS, networked PC or cloud-based music service or even your mobile and create playlists from those tracks. It then spits the music out via a standard headphone socket so you can connect it to an existing Amplifier & Speakers or Active Speakers (eg. computer speakers) or just listen with headphones.

That's just the beginning though. Add another unit in another zone connected to another set of speakers and you can stream the same music to that zone OR listen to something completely different at different volumes all controlled via your mobile/s. Get several and play the same music in multiple zones and different music through the other zones or just crank the same music through all zones simultaneously! Great for parties but yes you'll need to add speakers and/or Amps to actually hear the music in each zone.

Still a new product though and no-one seems to have done a decent review on how well it handles mutli-zoning so that may be a dealbreaker. Time will tell…

So kind of like a raspberry pi running Squeezeplug, but without the need to get your hands dirty to configure it. (Plus you don't need to buy the SD card or WiFi dongle or power supply).

        • It probably is just that but in a funky plastic box :)

      • Awesome, thanks.
So I can plug it into my av reciever, and good to go!

        • +1

Exactly! I just bought two so fingers crossed they work OK. This offer will expire well before I receive them however I'll do a YouTube review on them concentrating on their multi-zone capabilities and post the link here. I just hope they actually work!

Studio Master (96kHz 24-bit lossless) FLAC — Not supported

    Damn. Deal killer for me.

  • Damn you OzBargain! Just bought two even though I don't need then and I can't really afford them right now ;)

  • What about the power adaptor? it's going to be an American type with 110v hope it goes up to 240v

    • Most manufacturers now only make multi-voltage power adaptors as it's cheaper for them to just make the one version. The only problem of course is that you'll need a US to AU Pin Adaptor however a much more elegant solution is to just buy a cheap MicroUSB Power Supply with the AU pins. You can pick them up for as little as about $1.50 for 500mA however at a guess this unit would need at least 1A so they're a bit more expensive at around $3.50 as per this one: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/USB-2-0-DC-5V-1A-Travel-Home-Wall… Of course as per all cheap Chinese products there's a risk they may burn your house down too but that's not to say a $50 version sold locally wouldn't do the same thing!

OK thanks I didn't realise it's powered via a MicroUSB connection - that should make it easy as I have plenty of these lying around.

        I'm getting one!

        • +1

Yep, the beauty of using standard format connections :)

    • +2

Yep, US type but with worldwide voltage. However, these rarely meet AUS standards but it only requires 1a via USB so most USB chargers will work just fine.

  • Don't suppose it's got a hackable Linux underneath? And/or Logitech Squeezebox compatible?

  • No idea on those although Squeeze box compatibility hasn't been mentioned in the material I've seen.

  • Noob question. Can I connect this to a set of unpowered speakers (or headphones)? How then do I control the volume?

    • Yep, just plug them straight into the 3.5mm socket. You'd have to use the app to control the volume.

Yay, my Cobblestones just arrived! Will give them a decent run tonight and then do a bit of a write-up here with the findings… especially on the multizoning capabilities.

    • Thanks for the update. Keen to hear how it goes.

      • Hmm. Just finished and they're good but not amazing. Will post links to my dodgy videos once they're on YouTube later tonight. They CAN multizone quote well but the App is pretty weak unfortunately :( Fingers crossed future updates improve things. Links soon…

  • OK guys, here's my dodgy little video reviews:
    Part 1 - https://youtu.be/oDE8Xrc1SdU
    Part 2 - https://youtu.be/NqkkI--Y94g

Sorry for the audio & video quality but I had a camera crisis so had to use an old Smart Phone. Should be enough to show them working though. Any questions please ask.
