Long time WDTV MEDIA PLAYER user, how do these devices compare in usability?

The WDTV does almost everything I want, although the interface is long in the tooth now and I could be persuaded to try something new…

  • A link would be nice too, instead of just an image….

  • Link would be handy.

Also, seems to be cheaper here, although never used this site before - http://www.dd4.com/goods/Original+MINIX+NEO+X6+Android+TV+Bo…

    win8.1 version please?

    • +1

      This.

And I'm assuming it's the Android version of XBMC/Kodi? Would love an OpenELEC or similar setup..

      • Same problem.
        Ship from HongKong.
        2 weeks for shipping.
        No GST invoice.
        No local warranty.

        • +1

… Not sure where that came from.

@edgar28 was asking for a Win8.1 version. I linked to another media player that could be dual booted between Android and Windows.

    • Yep, I want a Windows with Bing box with gigabit ethernet and 4K support, Android boxes no longer serve a purpose, at least not if I'm paying more than $60.

  • +2

I think you would be better off with the Nexus Player for $129 tbh

  • Beware, Netflix 720P on these.

    • Clarify?

      • That is correct.
The NEO X6 only supports standard definition Netflix. Netflix 1080p HD is not available on this devices.
However, for XBMC, both 720p and 1080p HD are supported.

  • better off with an intel atom one?

Looks like a good replacement for the parents WD streaming media player.

I'm assuming I can install plex on this and use that instead of XBMC? I myself prefer XBMC, and but the parents use plex on the Ipad so want them to stick with what they know.

    • Yep, you can download and install Plex for Android on this device.

    • I initially had my parents on a decent little XBMC box but they just couldn't get the hang of it. Gave them an old WD TV Streaming box and it's been smooth sailing ever since. Speed isn't an issue for them…

  • NUC any day. I just drove the car over the last android box I will ever buy

    • May I ask what you use it for? I'm genuinely interested in NUC but seem like an overkill if it's only to watch local movies.

    • Not really a fair comparison, since the cheapest you can get a NUC set up for is roughly 3 times this price.

I've been trying to find the best low-power-using XBMC/Kodi box that I can for years, and so far my list is:

      1. Amazon FireTV Stick - only takes first spot because of its form factor and not requiring a power point (usb powered by tv)
      2. Amazon FireTV
      3. NUC
      4. Apple TV 2
      5. Raspberry Pi Model B
      • +1
        1. RaspberryPi 2 + OpenELEC

        End of list.

        • Yep rPi2 and OE is amazing.

Would have one in the lounge too if it did HD audio pass through.

        • If only it did Netflix, I'd completely agree.

        • @blade12: Yep.. Still on the fence re: Netflix though.

But considering I have it on my FetchTV, XB1, Chromecast, all the laptops/desktops/tablets/phones …. I can live without it on the RPi. :)

        • Have you owned a Model B+? If so, how does the 2 compare to it?

        • @MrFunSocks: I've had a B+ running for about a year now - it's great when overclocked, but I can't run it like that when powered via the TV USBs, so I had to throttle it back a bit.. It's acceptable, but a bit laggy.

The RPi2 is connected directly to a USB charger, so has no power issues, but even at stock it's fast. As fast, or faster, than the B+ when overclocked.

I don't think I've tried running the RPi2 from TV USB … Might have a crack at that. ;)

        • No Hulu or Netflix is a major letdown. I should of researched more before getting one….

        • @ryang:
Looks cool, I have a NUC in the lounge now so I'm set, thanks for the tip!

      • Amlogic S802 or S805. I've been using XBMC on the Amlogic android boxes for a few years now and they've been perfectly adequate.

        • Spot on. S802 and S805 players are fine for XBMC/KODI, Netflix etc. Although with some apps such as Netflix tailored more to a touchscreen interface a wireless keyboard with touchpad or an air mouse definately come in handy. Many of the S802 players have excellent custom firmware support too.

The Amazon Fire TV stick also looks like it could be great value given you can sideload KODI and the Netflix app is customised to suit their included remote control. If you don't need the extra processing power and voice commands of the bigger Fire TV box.

The Windows based media players such as the PIPO X7 also look interesting but haven't used them so can't comment personally and they are more expensive.

WDTV Live are also ok but having owned one the interface is very clunky in comparison to KODI although the Netflix and iView apps work well with the remote.

IMO the android based ones worth considering are:

          Fire TV Stick
          Fire TV
S802 based eg Tronsmart S82 or MXIII S802 2GB (the 1GB has less custom firmware support)
          S805 based eg MXQ

      • My list:

        1. Asus Chromebox + OpenELEC (for where I need Hi10P)
        2. Raspberry Pi 2 + OpenELEC (for where I don't)

        End of list.

        • I loved the idea of a Aus Chromebox, but the lack of Netflix was a killer.

        • +1

@snuke: Yeah, would be nice if Kodi had Netflix. I don't really care about it as I can pretty much forget about streaming anything decent with my internet speeds. Download and watch local is my only option for HD. Here's hoping for NBN!

Edit: That said, I've seen people dual boot, so they get Netflix in Chrome.

        • @daerka:

Yeah, I have seen the dual boot thing, just another hassle. I have a Nexus Player with Kodi, decent but not great. Will look at the Nvidia Shield which should be released next month. It fixes two of my NP issues.

        • @snuke: Yeah, a hassle it is. I have my bedroom unit set up in dual boot and I've hardly used Chrome OS. Can't imagine ever using anything but Kodi, though, gotten too used to my conveniences. Being able to start a movie with dinner in the lounge, and then simply finishing it in the bedroom has become one of our most used features. lol

        • @daerka:

I need to get My SQL setup, I tried it once and for whatever reason it didn't work.

        • @snuke: i have been running an asus chromebox last few months playing netflix fine…

        • @daerka: Is that a new feature in Kodi? I think i'm on an old version of XBMC.

Plex does the synching of where I'm up to in a movie. I still sort of use both - XBMC onto a SMB share is easier to use with some of the file browsing mode if I want to upload and watch straight away, Plex is handy on my ATV3 on the spare TV and onto some tablets/phones. Plex library seems to work a bit better to, granted I haven't spent any time configuring the XBMC one.

        • @bigbear:

          How is this achieved?
Can you launch it from the Kodi menu screen as I currently do with it set as a Favourite?
I gather it is full 1080P and 5.1 audio?

        • @Domingo:
You need to set up MySQL, see this - http://kodi.wiki/view/MySQL
A millions time more fiddly than setting up the Plex media server, which is stupid easy.
I failed in my last attempt with my Synology NAS as the library holder.

        • @Domingo: As mentioned by snuke, you need to set up a shared library for the devices in question. I never could figure out how to run several simultaneous libraries in Plex. Plex is good, I even did a test run of OpenELEC Plex, but I still prefer Kodi for its configurability.

        • @snuke: Oddly enough, I couldn't get the shared library to run on my Synology NAS either. Eventually gave up and set it up on my Mint box, and everything was pretty straight forward. I probably just missed something on my NAS. Didn't have much luck with Plex either. Probably comes down to me having been too impatient when I tried to set it up, but I just couldn't figure out how to have one library shared between two devices and then have a different library for another. Not sure whether I'll ever take the time again to have another look. Very happy with my Kodi setup at the moment.

        • @daerka:

I found setting up Plex to be piss easy, as for your library, thing, not sure if I am reading it right, but you can chose the source library on the device. That said, I have done that with having libraries on two different devices, the NAS and an iMac, not multiple libraries just on one device. Never lookied into that as I had no need.
I don't like Plex much though, Kodi is far superior in what can be done. Now that they are doing the Kodi thing moving on from XBMC, they seem to be trying to go more mainstream like Plex is. That just makes it easier and easier for everyone to use. Plex is great in that is is everywhere, on all kinds of devices.

MySQL thing on the Synology, is a pain, so it's not just you being impatient. I wasn't too concerned as we only watch in one room really. But I have reset my Nexus Player so many times recently, the constant library rebuilding is driving me nuts.

  • Rep just a question. If I slot in a 32gb sd card, can that additional storage be used for apps? Im not sure if 8gb is enough to install multiple games and play with a usb controller on the big screen.

  • Will Kodi/XBMC work on this?

    • yes, it works with XBMC

  • can someone explain the difference between this and the google chromecast? o:

    • Chormecast is highly customized made by Google, it has very limited to Android Apps and services, works great in its particular area (streamline videos etc)

Minix X6 potentially works with all Android Apps, obviously does everything chromecast can do.
You can get more detail from minix official site and forum.
      http://www.minix.com.hk/Products/MINIX-NEO-X6-ANDROID-TV.htm…

    • A chromecast does nothing by itself, it requires another device to push stuff to it. Ie. Tell it to play this video, go to this url, etc. You cant just turn on your tv and chromecast and browse your movies in kodi.

This device is a standalone media box. It has an interface and lets you install apps that you can use to browse media.

      • Thanks for the clear explanation :)

  • hmm I need to test NetfliXBMC addon to see if it supports 1080p under XBMC/ Kodi
