Intel Broadwell Core M-5Y71 inside. Very interesting tablet/convertible only 7.6mm thick. (iPad air 1 thickness)

For the RRP @$1299 I would say it is less appealing but at the price $1004, I would say this is a deal.

  • 1920x1080 - Full HD Touchscreen

I can't be the only one who checks the screen before anything else when looking at laptops, right?

Almost any laptop with an SSD is "fast enough" these days, but the display makes all the difference.

    • The reason I didn't update the screen res is the device could have either 1080p or 1440p depends on the model. The Australian stock seems to only have the 1080p res but on DickSmith product site I did not see the confirmation info.

Currently doing a bit more search to confirm the screen is 1080p.

      Thanks for the note btw!

    • That Gizmodo Aus review says it is 2560×1440

The Asus Transformer Book T300 Chi’s screen is phenomenal. It’s a beautiful panel; an IPS LCD with an incredibly wide viewing angle, pretty damn good colour reproduction out of the box, and a pixel density of 235ppi thanks to a high resolution of 2560×1440 pixels and a relatively small screen size of 12.5 inches.

      • yep, 1,366 x 768 is absolutely useless to me, moreso in a 15" format

  • The surface pro seem to be better than this IMO, would you buy this over the surface pro? The price is similar.

    • Personally no. Just hate the kickstand / keyboard on the Surface.

  • Networking: Integrated or 802.11ac

    DS site states only:
    802.11agn+Bluetooth 4.0 (Dual band)

    Is it 802.11ac or 802.11agn?

    • AGN. 'specs' above are generic for the all the Chi models.

  • I have been looking at this for a while. I think the biggest down side about this product is the battery life. It only lasts less than 6 hours.

However, at this price, and considering I'm going overseas soon, very tempted.

  • -1

    Go for the Asus UX305

    It's 13.3" non touch screen, same chip, 3 x USB 3, 256gb SSD, 8gb ram

    ….but going for US$699 + shipping

    Also lighter at 1.2kg

    • 699USD is 900AUD. Plus shipping the price gets close to $1004, and buying from an Australian dealer has some other perks, e.g. you can get it right now.

Real question is: do you want a great laptop (like the UX305), or a transformer that makes a decent Laptop + tablet (such as the Chi)?

If you really want a transformer you'll have to prepared to make sacrifices. A plain laptop will always have better specs, and ergonomically will usually work better as a laptop than an transformer. Only thing slightly disappointing about the UX305 is that it doesn't have a backlit keyboard, but neither does the Chi (excluding the tablet mode on-screen keyboard obviously).

      • Only thing slightly disappointing about the UX305 is that it doesn't have a backlit keyboard

That is a deal breaker for me. I could never have a laptop again without a backlit keyboard.
One more plus for the Dell XPS13.

    • The T300 chi is definitely for a different group of users. The biggest advantage is this is a detachable, meaning it has a tablet form at 720g and 7.6mm thick. Then the device can be attached to perform like a laptop - this can be an advantage over the surface pro 3 which only comes in a typecover but cannot transform into a clamshell form (sure it depends on user preference).

Not to mention $699 usd is around $930 aud atm.
