  • It does seem like you get a fair bit for your money…

    CPU
    Intel Pentium N3540 processor
    CPU Speed
    2.16GHz

Not much between Intel Pentium N3540 vs Core i3 4005U http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Pentium-N3540-vs-Intel-Core-i3…

I guess ok for the money.
Just hope it dont have wireless connection problems like previous kogan laptop. http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/article/560481/kogan-offers-32…

I found CPU Boss site a bit useless. N3540 would be a Bay Trail Atom chip and simply cannot compare with a Core i3 in terms of performance. Here's the PassMark comparison with i3-4005U — i3 get almost 40% more mark and single thread is 80+% faster.

However it's still a good-enough CPU for browsing, video-watching, etc.

  • Nice specs but i wonder how crappy the build quality will be .. and then there's the kogan no after sales service..

    "Thin & light – only 2.1kg"
I know we all got the free bulk nutrient sample but that doesn't mean we lift

14" size, a HDD and 4 cell battery ain't light brah. Not without paying through the nose like the XPS stuff.

Normally a screen upgrade on branded laptops from HD to full HD costs about $250. So please give Kogan it's due respect for this product. I have never bought anything Kogan branded though.

I think they might have a winner if

    • Reduce the screen size to 13.3"
    • Reduce the weight to ~1.6kg
    • Make the hard drive and memory easily user-serviceable (upgrade or move to an SSD)
    • Keep the Full HD screen & the $369 price

I'll buy one if Linux can be easily installed.

I'll buy one if Linux can be easily installed.

Even better Kogan could avoid the Windows tax and release it with Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora … actually I don't care as long as it has linux :-)

      • How much do you think the windows tax is? $20? or $50?

    • +1

If they could reduce the screen size to 13.3" and switch out the HDD for an SSD I'd pay $450-$530

For reducing the weight, I'd throw in an extra $30-50

Upgrade the CPU and I'd throw in another $50-$80

    • That is pretty much a new model laptop.
There is a demand for 14 inch where 13 is too small and 15 is too big for some users.

      • i like you scotty and the way you think but its not feasible, not even in the next 2yrs

13.3 FHD screens are premium, hell even 14" FHD is premium, i do not know how Kogan was able to secure this price (in fact it looks like its gone up $10 last time I looked)

15" screens not so much but who wants that shit?

also every gram in weight reduced = $$$

i doubt they could fully secure your spec for $769…

btw. I found the Clevo unit this is. The thing is built like a clamshell ie. no hatches no nothing

you have to unscrew and snap it open to do upgrades… I do not have an issue with 4Gb… in fact i think 8Gb is overkill on an N3540 but do wish to do an SSD upgrade but it doesnt look foolproof

        • Looks to be $359 for 2GB and $369 for 4GB RAM. Please let us know which Clevo unit it is exactly? I'm curious to know how many RAM slots, ease/difficulty replacing HDD with SDD which by the way should shave off some weight. Shame the keyboard does not appear to be backlit otherwise I'd buy it (might still :-)

        • @samlor: It is a Clevo 940TU and 2 ram slots, 8Gb will be fine according to a reply (thanks) in the other/earlier deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/191560

Pre-order does not ship until 20 May so I might hold out for a Kogan free shipping Friday to save $19 delivery to my postcode 2035.

        • Free shipping is as now available (today only) on this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/196477.

  • Best of luck with this. Kogan don't know what they are getting themselves into when it comes to laptop build quality. For the sake of the headache I'd avoid them. They couldn't even get a simple electric motor right on their silly blender cooker rip off.

Unlike their mysterious china-brand junk appliances that Kogan usually slap their logos on, this laptop has been identified as a Clevo. Clevo make decent (but not great) laptops, AFAIK.

  • I would buy 1 but i need 1 now so i might have to settle for a refurb Dell.

    • Are there refurb Dell's of similar spec/price? If so, do tell, link please?

  • New 1080p laptop for $370? Wow.
