Eaton 3S 700 AU UPS 700VA, 400W, $89 + Shipping @ Shopping Express

140
NEW10OFF

Yes, I know this is Shopping Express. I have had no problems, yet.

This came out to be $101.25 shipped in Sydney for me. Cheapest I can find for the moment http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=eaton+3s700…

Searching the archives of Ozbargain, tricky Dick had it at a ridiculously low price back in 2012. Fast forward to 2015 and it is a bit more.

I have tried to find reviews, but none available. Ozbargain archives show nothing negative.

If you are after a powerboard styled UPS then this may be for you. It is for me, hence the buy.

  • I need one that works during a blackout. Like a power generator.
    Will this do the trick?

    • +1

Depends on what you are powering. I only want something that shust down my server when there is a blackout. I only need to to be useful for a few minutes.

Jaycar have a larger capacity UPS for 109 at the moment, but I have no idea how reliable they are. I remember reading a review of them in APC mag a year back. Their review was favourable, but I am not sure if this was the exact model.

      • I need it to power some lights/lamps…

        • This is a UPS. It's designed to allow you to cleanly shut down PCs/Servers and save any important work in progress in the event of AC power loss. When at full load (all connected appliances drawing the rated wattage or close to it), most of them (these consumer-grade ones anyway) will have battery run times of a minute or so (assuming the batteries are fully charged).

          You want a generator.

I think you want a Xiaomi power bank and usb light.

        • @Lukian: Thank you.

  • I bought one of these when dicksmith was getting rid of them for $39 from this deal- https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/78055

It has been really good but the battery now only lasts for about 2-3 minutes. Does anyone know what sort of replacement battery these use? I tried searching but I couldn't find any information.

It would be cheaper to buy a new UPS and use the old one as a power filter.

    • +4

It should just be a 12v lead acid battery, on my UPS I just removed the battery, brought it into jaycar and got the same size/cap one and installed it.

      Its a 12V 7AH Battery

      http://www.jaycar.com.au/Power-Products-Electrical/Storage-B…

I think the 9AH Battery is same size, not sure if you can chuck this one in for more capacity

    • Yes I have an older Eaton 5110 that died. Just get the 12V battery from Jaycar to replace it.

      • Does anybody know if Jaycar have a replacement battery for the Belkin 600Va from this deal?
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/102391
It has served me well, but also not running for very long.

On another note… Is it possible just to buy a few of those batteries and use a CTEK (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/192997) and an ardunio/raspberry pi to automate the charge cycles and send shutdown commands to the server?

I've got the exact same UPS but got it from a while ago, not that deal. I just replaced the battery in Jan with one I found on eBay (12v5Ah RAZORBACK PREMIUM AGM Battery - Solar, UPS, Scooter). It was $17+$11.50 postage. Same guy (aussiebatteryman01)is selling them now for $28 inc postage. FYI, the original was a Ritar RT1250 12V5.0AH/20HR.

Seems to be working fine, power's been out a few times and everything kept working. I've got it hooked up to my PS4 and XBONE. They shouldn't be powered off while in standby mode. We had a coffee machine that was constantly shorting the house. Needless to say, we have since replaced it :)

Be careful when buying a battery, some of them come with different size connectors. I can't remember if this battery was an exact fit, but it worked.

I was toying with the idea of getting a 7Ah battery, only $3 more but they're bigger in physical size. I think the Belkin 600Va might just have enough space to accommodate it, and if not, it looks easy to dremel/multitool the plastic tabs off so it will fit. Never got around to doing it because I was in a bit of a rush to get up and running.

  • This will keep a device up during a blackout, but it is not designed to keep it up for long. UPS's are designed to allow time to shut down safely, not run a system for a long time. This UPS would keep an average PC running for about 30mins.

This UPS would keep an average PC running for about 30mins.

That "average Pc" would only be able to draw <50 watts (eg Intel NUC) with say a 25w LED 24" monitor.

A more realistic "average PC" with say a 200w total power draw would last ~10 minutes.

If you have a dedicated gaming graphics card, you could only have 2 minutes or it might instantly exceed the maximum power draw, causing an immediate shut down.

A more realistic "average PC" with say a 200w total power draw would last ~10 minutes.

Realistic for someone who wishes to play GTA V during a blackout or something. Sub-100W total power draw is a far more typical when idle at the desktop or web browsing.

I also got one (actually two) of these during the Dick Smith sale. They've been GREAT. Have saved my NAS and PC from several brownout/blackouts. The NAS gets a good 40 minutes of battery time, the PC gets around 9 minutes. Just make sure that you only plug in what you really need into the UPS ports, and put the remainder on power filter only ports.

    PC - UPS
    Monitor - UPS
    Speakers - filter only

    etc.

I got one of these during the DSE clearance a few years back for my NAS i think it was about $60 then. 700VA is enough to keep my NAS, switch and router up for about 30mins still. This being an older model i dont know if this is as good value than the newer ones which can be had for $125.

  • work for synology? i mean will the nas know it runs on this backup and turns off?

    • +1

Yes - This from the link:

The 3S features a HID-compliant USB port (cable supplied), for automatic integration with common operating systems (Windows/Mac OS/Linux)

So, you'd connect this USB cable to your Synology and then configure your NAS to shutdown after X minutes.

      • You just install the driver and then configure the auto-shutdown settings to your liking.

Not much fiddling around necessary. Though I don't know what erwinsie's Synology is running but most of Eaton's UPS Companion software seems to run on Windows only (see the "more info" links on the URL above).

        • My Qnap has built-in support for USB messages from UPS devices - I'd assume a Synology would have the same. No need to install any drivers.

    • You'll have to look for the specific brands/models that your Synology supports. I have 3 UPS - one for the NAS, one for modem & switch, and one to support the cordless phones..
