8.5kg Gas Swap $25 EVERYDAY at Coles Express

580

Just noticed the 8.5kg gas swaps are now $25 everyday at Coles Express. And because your spending over $20 instore you save 10c/l on fuel. This makes a 14c/l discount on fuel possible.
For a 60L tank the gas swap works out to $19.00 when factoring in the 10c/l discount.

    Wouldn't the saving only be 10 cents for the 60 litres?

    You can't exactly say that the 4c per litre is also part of reducing the cost of the gas swap.

    • Look at it which ever way you like, but still it works out to a very good price for a 8.5kg gas particularly now it's not just a limited offer.

      • I upped the post, I just think it's slightly deceiving to try argue that it's 14 cents off fuel for the swap, not 10.

        • +1

          I agree with you. you should only factor in 10cents per litre as you would get the 4 cents per litre with or without the gas swap.

    Yeah, I don't think this is exactly a "bargain". I use 8.5kg bottles for my instant hot water, and I only pay $19.99/refill at BCF. $19/refill at the local camping shop, but you have to leave the bottle there, and pick up later. BCF also fill the bottle in front of you, so you know it's full.

    Masters is $22.98 swap'n go, and I'm pretty sure that Bunnings is $1.00 less at $21.95.

      This is better value if buying with fuel. Also I've found my nearest BCF never has gas available when I call.

        If you arrive with an empty 60l tank. But then, I am sure there is something you could buy at the servo without paying more to start with.

        How about 10 x 2l bottles of milk for $20? Same price as at the supermarket and same saving on fuel as in your example. Then fill your gas bottle at a cheaper place…

        • It really depends on your own situation, but there is savings to be had. Everyone is different so for some people they might be better off somewhere else.

        • I agree with you that mathematically you can be better off under your suggestion. However there are soooooo many grocery online specials, coupons, cashbacks etc that I struggle with my weekly grocery shop to make up the "spend $X to save $X/X%", "spend $100 to get $40 cashback" requirements.

          I don't really want to take $20 out of my normal weekly online grocery shop because it will make it that much harder to meet those minimum requirements. So for me it makes sense to get the swap 'n go at Coles Express because this can't be ordered from Coles/Woolworths online.

          You can get through 20L of milk before the use-by date?!

        • @danwarne: come on, that was just the first example that sprang to mind. A big family might well do exactly that.

          The point is: a true bargain hunter finds a way to combine bargains with each other rather than paying more for one item to pay a little less for another.

          Of course there's almost always a point where people value convenience more than saving the last cent. I do too, but I don't call it a bargain then.

      @doze:

      Depends on how many litres of fuel you buy. I would normally line up a full 85L tank in my car and 3 x 5L jerry cans at home when I do the swap. So with 100L fuel this would save an extra $10 bringing the cost of the swap to $15. Plus the convenience of swapping is far better than waiting for them to fill up my bottle.

      It's a great deal if you work the system to your advantage.

      • Where should I get cheap jerry cans? Everywhere seems to be expensive…

        • +3

          Bunnings, Masters, Big W, Kmart all have between $10-$20.

          There are cheap & nasty ones <$20 and expensive ones >$100. People argue about which to buy. Personally my three cheap & nasties have lasted me over 10 years so I don't see the need to spend big bucks on the expensive ones when I carry jerry cans only for my power tools. I think I would buy an expensive jerry can if I was using it for drinking water etc.

          u can get containers for nothing. a lot of chemical supply places / painting stores (ex-thinners, acetone, etc) literally give them away.

          drive around an industrial suburb. u'll find them literally on the street.

          @Son ofa Zombie:

          sure, but it's illegal to fill them with fuel. If the servo is on the ball they will come out and stop you. You can't know if there are dregs of some chemical in there, or if the petrol will dissolve the container (if its plastic).

          @effgee:

          I sort of anticipated a response like yours by specifically mentioning acetone.

          acetone is identical to petrol for transportation purposes and storage. acetone is also a cleaning agent. so good infact, it is an industrial cleaning solvent for things like lab glassware and METAL CONTAINERS. whoops. An acetone can, would be FAR cleaner than any jerry can u could buy in a store.

          So please research , before spouting BS that u "feel" or "think" is correct. Spouting uninformed trash should be illegal.

          @Son ofa Zombie:

          My local petrol stations state you can only fill "approved containers". As there is an Australian Standard for fuel containers (AS/NZS 2906–2001) only such containers should be approved. While another industrial solvent container will do the job perfectly well, the petrol station may reject it. There's no need to be so aggressive with effgee.

        • @Son ofa Zombie:

          You didn't say metal anywhere on your post, nor were you specific about what chemicals, "ex-thinners, acetone etc" which means any chemical, since et cetera is a Latin expression that means "and other things".

          Unlike you rather aggressive post, nothing I said is incorrect.
          Have a nice life :)

  • Did this the other day, 60l of petrol and 65l of lpg. 14 cents of and a cheap gas refill. Works out about $10 for the gas refill

    • -1

      cheap gas refill, but that means you paid full price for the fuel ;)

  • -3

    This deal is an insult to Ozbargain. Really guys. I always swap mine at Bunnings for about 22/23$. How can 25$ be a deal and appear on the first page ???

    • +1

      Because it's not $25 for the refill. It is approximately $19 (exact amount varies depending on fuel purchased).

      Read the post again.

  • -5

    Get over it.

  • The wife is telling me that she doesn't believe that you can piggy-back a 4c off fuel with 10c off purchase at shell express, instead the total of the two is max 10c/litre off.

  • +4

    Aren't the gas bottles outside of the store?
    :P

    • Thanks Qroozn, that told her ;)

  • Is there a limit to how many litres of fuel the discount can be applied to? I have a 160L tank in my car

    • +1

      • Up to two fuel types for one vehicle (including *approved containers or boats or motorcycles on an attached trailer) up to a maximum of 150 litres; or
      • Up to two fuel types in any number of *approved containers up to a maximum of 150 litres.

    • Are you sure that it is a car?
