There's a Flight in Every Credit Card-ANZ, CBA, NAB & Westpac 30-50K Bonus Qantas Points

Moved to Forum: Original Link

I saw a billboard driving past the airport and then again in the air bridge when flying Qantas and it seems that all the Major Banks are competing for us as card customers. Massive amount of Bonus points on offer if you are looking for a card or want to swap (or get multiples like me!!)

30-50K bonus points can get you a couple of flights from SYD to MEL (8000pts one way + $31 taxes or 12,000 with no taxes using Points+pay)

Look at the top 4 offers on www.qantaspoints.com/cards

CBA – 40K Qantas Points + $0 annual fee first year
NAB – 40K Qantas Points
ANZ – 50K Qantas Points + $0 annual fee first year
Westpac – 30K Qantas Points

So many flights to be had just on the Bonus points!!!!!

  • I have a bunch of cards but I'm thinking I might get some variety of American Express to add to the collection, based on the number of AmEx-only offers that appear on OzB. Just waiting for a good deal.

if you collect velocity points, theres currently 80k points on the velocity platinum ($349 annual fee). you also get 4 lounge passes and a free return flight*

at the moment, i think you can get a return economy flight to LAX for those points (+ fees and taxes)

      • Definitely worth a look. Thanks.

    • 80,000 points for $349 and a 'free' domestic return flight (main routes) + 2 AMEX lounge passes + 2 Virgin lounge passes, isn't a good deal?

        Nah, it's terrible…

Just joking - looks very, very tempting ;)

        • It's available via the comments on the other AMEX deal. It's someone's referral link, so I'm guessing that's why it hasn't been posted as a standalone deal.

Sadly, I already have two AMEX cards (Platinum Edge & Velocity), so I'm not eligible for the bonus points :>

just can't update it anymore, but the wiki has the updated points

Well good news dazweeja, they ALL come with a companion AMEX cards as well as the Visa/mastercards and NAB and ANZ AMEX companion cards are 1.5 points per $1… :) and CBA is $1.25 and Westpac is 1 point per $1

    • Thanks for the info. I already have an account with ANZ so I'll look into that one.

Aren't CBA, NAB and ANZ deals dupes?

  • +1

Ahh good point PBG - I only saw it on a billboard which had all 4 logos on it and thought I would post..

    • All good swickham, I still think the Westpac one is a deal :)

  • Do the amount of Credit Cards you officially obtain damage your credit rating?

    • +4

Multiple applications 'lower' your credit score. It (anecdotally) recovers after 6 months of no applications.

Either pay VEDA (yearly) to view yours, or use a (free) third party with an 'estimate' like creditsavvy.com.au which uses Experian data.

  • Thanks!!! :) anyone know any bonus points deals on business credit cards ?

  • which one(s) can get you the free invitation to Qantas lounge?

    • anz black gives you qantas club passes.

    • I have the ANZ Black & that has 2 free passes.

      • I just got Westpac black FF - just wondering how do I gain access to lounge? Do I show card or something?

        • Which lounge?

The qantas lounge? You'll need to call them and request the invites

The Sydney Amex lounge? Just show your card, you get two entries p-year.

        • Qantas Lounge - Looks like I need to spend with Qantas before being issued with passes?

@Gerbud: Woha, big cull! I requested my comments be removed because they were miss leading and old information, looks like everything got swept up.

For westpac cards, it now appears as though you need to register on this website.
          https://loungepass.altitudeblack.com.au/default.aspx?appActi…

AND you need to complete a purchase directly with Qantas to get your lounge invites. full Ts and Cs are on that page.

        • @ChickenTalon: Something I haven't worked out is if the paying the taxes on a flight you've redeemed with FF points counts as that purchase. I think it would, but it's not clear.

  • I am going to europe in Feb, what is to stop me gettign a few of these cards, spendi ng the required $500 or so on each one, getting the bonus points on my Qantas FF account, cancelling the cards and then getting my flights to europe for free (understanding of course that there is a $700 ish fee for getting award flights and that the best use of points is normally using them to upgrade bought flights to Business Class etc).

      Nothing, Wash, Spin, Repeat.

      • OK then have applied for the Commonwealth card simply for the points. i already have the Westpac MC linked to my normal accounts/mortgage. I looked at the NAB one but had to spend $3K on it, not sure i am that committed. $500 for Cwlth will be easy, just pay the rates and electricity bills on it and I'll be done!

        • Just to add a little more - your credit score taking a hit is what could potentially stop you. If you apply for several in a short time, you may get declined. If you space them out by a few months and aren't legitimately in financial trouble you should have no probs.

    • what is to stop me

the death of your credit lending history.

    Food for thought…

I got the ANZ FF Black card on the 50k FF points and no annual fee offer around this time last year. Just called and spoke to Credit Card Closure dept to ask them to waive the next years fee ($425) but they said the system won't allow as I scored the card through the offer. The rep said if I had of joined outside of this offer then they could waive it no problems, but because I joined using the offer the system won't allow. The offer was too good already. I even played the moving to a competitor card. No deal.

If anyone was able to get this fee waive (joining the same offer) please share how you were able to get them to do it.

Anyhoo, thanks OP perfect timing… I'll look to go with CBA I think.

    • So did you close the ANZ FF Black then?

      • Not yet, it's not due until July/August so holding off until later…

The CBA offer expires 3rd July so hoping to call ANZ again closer to that date to see if I have any more luck, if not I'll cancel and apply for the CBA one.

  • I signed up for the NAB offer, but was wondering would my amex card be eligible for all those amex offers that are on OzB? I tried to register online with amex but it didn't let me.

    • register on amexconnect.com.au instead

  • So tempting.

I just about to joing Qantas Frequent Flyer. Does anyone know how to avoid the joining fee?

  • Everytime we apply for credit an entry is made on our credit file.

Any idea how negative this impact is (say, in regards to later applying for a home loan) later on?

    • +1

      From what I understand.

They aren't too bad, but if you accrue enough of them then you'll move into a riskier category. Which could impact your loan if you're at a higher LVR.

If you've got a lot of credit cards, they'll add up the total limits for all your cards, then they'll make a decision based on your assets. This will generally reduce the amount a bank will be prepared to loan you, and potentially the price. (LVR insurance)

Big things that impact your score are defaults on loans/cards or late bill payments.

All the bonus points which amount to free flights/gift cards are mostly funded by the people who get into debt right?

Or is it also funded by the merchant fees?

    • +1

Both really, plus annual and all the other fees. The points count as a customer acquisition cost so come out of the overall revenue the banks earn from the cards. Ideally once you become a customer you keep the card forever and use it lots, and that's how the bank makes its money back.

I do wonder if all these promotions are because of bandwagoning on previous ones have resulted in a lot of credit card churn as people cancel their old cards, and hence how sustainable the cycle is. Or if the banks are wanting to push credit cards to diversify their balance sheet from mortgages.

      • I think it'll be somewhat cycilcal, i.e. every year or two will go through periods of abundant offes and scarcity of offers.

    • +1

Correct, while the annual fees and merchant fees fund a lot of the cost of the cards, they wouldn't be worth doing for the banks if people didn't end up coughing up 20% interest.

Still, Ozbargainers accumulating points are a thorn in the side of the big 4 banks, and that can only be a good thing.

  • Rookie OZBargainer question … but do people sign up for these cards, meet the bonus points requirements then cancel straight away? Rinse and repeat?

  • You can get a PS4 with those points

    https://store.qantas.com/Catalogue.a2?Page=ViewProduct&Produ…

I am tempted to claim all my points now, as I reckon they will devalue the points in the near future…

    • That's terrible value, that's about $1000 in points when you could get a bundle from EB for $600. You could even do better by buying $600 of Woolworths gift cards for 90,000 points, then buying EB gift cards at Woolworths.

      • -1

Yea, probably JB Hifi gift card will do the job. All I want to say is that I can claim a PS4 with the points I got. How much did I pay? $95 annual fee.
