Great little device. I can personally vouch for these as we use them for work travel. JB HiFi, Dick Smth, Harvey Norman & Telstra Shop all sell them for $129. Must be purchased in-store. Good luck :)

Otherwise there is the HN deal Telstra 4G Prepaid Pocket Wi-Fi Modem MF90 Lite $39 with 3GB

Link to my free unlocking guide in post.

Link to my free unlocking guide in post.

How much is your unlocking guide normally?

      • +2

Too late jv, just went back up to normal price :-(

    • +2

      @brucefromaustralia
The MF90 for $39 at HN is a good price, but keep in mind it only supports the 4G 1800 band. It has no support for 4GX 700 & 2600.

      • +1

        Thought you'd come through.

I've given up on these devices as I outlined in the link. I use a $40 4G Huawei Y550 for data (with 3GB & calls on the included Vodafone $50 pack). Using it now.

But I'm not interested in the 4GX service, yet.

        • Ah, I think I was looking this device up the other time.

      • Can we not refer to LTE bands 700 and 2600 as "4GX". It's just a marketing term, and gives the false impression that these are bands on the next iteration of LTE, which is false.

        • Maybe that's why Tel$tra didn't call it 5G - was wondering why their marketing gurus used 4GX??

      • Worth returning the $39 HN MF90 for this modem instead to get the extra 700 and 2600 band?

    • Your unlock guide was for MF91. The one you linked to is MF90. Will it work?

      • My apologies. I don't know. But it's free, so worth a try.

        • Err.. not if it bricks the unit.

        • @lostn:
Why would it do that. Do you know how the software works. Have a read.

        • @brucefromaustralia: Haven't tried it because I don't have the hardware needed to use it with.

If it does a check and won't alter the unit if it's not compatible because it's the wrong model, then there's no risk.

If it applies the new firmware anyway, then that's bad and could result in a brick.

But if it's the first case, then it won't work, and I'm out $39 because I've got a unit that I can't unlock. I'm not going to spend $39 without knowing for sure it will work. So you can't say it's free and worth a try. It's free to try after paying $39. And if it doesn't work, well you've got 30 days to use your credit.

What you're saying is, buy the $39 one and use my unlock guide. But someone could buy it and the unlock might not work, and they're out $39. It's "free to try" doesn't mean much after you've spent $39 if it doesn't work.

        • @lostn:
It checks to detect the modem model. Unlocking is a separate step. No firmware installed.
          Its alway your choice.

As I suggested, read up or ask on forums dedicated to the issue. I just unlocked with no problems - but it was a different model.

Another option. $79 for optus one with 4G, 5gb data, 3 months Netflix, and can also be plugged into the car :)

Another option. $79 for optus one with 4G

with much less coverage thrown in at no extra cost…

      • For $10 less actually ;)

About $40 less if you put a dollar value on the Netflix credit too

        • If you already have netflix with this give you 3 extra months?

Is it locked? If so, easy to unlock?

        • @ethanol: Yep, just adds to whatever existing free months you have (or just gives you 3 months free till it next charges you). Even works for US Netflix as it gives you the free months for that too.

So you can dock this thing into an Ethernet base station to make it a single port plus wifi router?

  • does any one know if dc-unlocker works with this device?
    thanks

This is a pretty average device.

Data gets used incredibly quick and uses more data than it should.
I tested this on my Xbox One whilst playing Live and it lasted all of about 2 hours with no actual console or game update, just game playing.

    • +2

Multiplayer games can consume 100Mb+ an hour (combined upload/download). This is assuming no other background data is being used besides the game. Drawing a bit of a long bow there to be blaming high data usage on the modem. What other 4G data modems have you tested this against to come to this conclusion?

    • +1

"uses more data than it should"

      what a genius comment!

May be that uploads were being counted as well as downloads when he used it.

Some ADSL/NBN providers don't count uploads towards total. I don't know of a mobile broadband provider who doesn't.

Bought it JB around xmas last year for $59, dont buy this product, i have been trying to unlock my device for a long time. The only one can unlock it is telstra.. And they want 100 bucks for it…

I prefer the MF910,cheaper, better, lighter and cost me 11 bucks to unlock it

    • Is it much different to the $39 MF90, above?

    • It will only cost $27.5 to unlock after prepaid broadband activated for 6 months
So if you can wait, $116 (89+27) is still a good price for a unlocked 4G Wifi with AC connectivity

  • +1

That would be right, been looking for a deal for the last couple of weeks, finally got sick of waiting and bought the Telstra 4G Wi-Fi Plus on Friday for $79. Although I don't really see what is better about the Ultimate.

  • +1

    oh I read unlimited..

  • I bought this device December at JB last year, internet connection not very reliable, When playing the online games like "Pirates King" and Candy Crush" facing no internet connection after 1 mins, had logged the case to Netgear a numbers of times. Netgear advised get the replace replace but the problem still the same. My previous devices MF91 and E8278 were much much better, faster and reliable.

  • Hey TA what is the range like?

My family has a small holiday house and I'm wondering if it will work or not

    • Depends on whether you have 4G coverage wherever your holiday house is :)

      • Yeah we do. Sorry I should have worded my question a bit better….

I mean if the mobile broadband device is in one room and I am in the other (say a bedroom) with my phone is it likely to reach? Or is it really only for devices in close proximity /same room?

        • Shouldn't be an issue, especially in a smaller home. Just centralise the device and you won't have a problem. I've tested it at my place and I still get close to full strength wifi from the front to the rear of the house which is around 18m. Good luck :)

Thanks - bought one this morning. Really appreciate this!

  • Hello guys.
I bought this one sometimes last year (http://consumer.huawei.com/en/mobile-broadband/mobile-wifi/f…).
It's on Telstra network. I plan soon to unlock it. However, is it worth to get this new Telstra device? Except from the interface, is it much different between them two?
