    Is this locked to Telstra?

    • If it is, ZTE devices are easy to unlock

      • devices are easy to unlock

Will it work with Optus or Voda though ????

      • Bought the same device (different branding) from an overseas seller.
Seller claimed it was unlocked.. lies.

Seller directed me to a euro website where for a few euros to unlock it. Haven't done it yet.

do you know of an easier way to unlock wakie?

        • +2

DC Unlocker has support for MF90. You have to pay, but if you look hard enough there's a "cracked" copy around too. Good luck.

          @wakie:
See comment below for free unlock process.

    • I just spoke to Telstra, they do say it is locked, but I haven't tried it with a different sim card to verify.

  • Will it work with an MVNO 3G SIM like Aldi?

    • As far as I'm aware Telstra MVNOs should work. But I don't work for Telstra so I can't guarantee, sorry.

      • You'll probably need to unlock it. I've got a 3G ZTE device and I had to remove the Telstra lock for it to work on a Telstra MVNO.

Wonder if this would work for us in Japan next week. Might look into unlocking.

    • Just hire a sim card in Japan for your phone, or a complete Pocket Wifi.

      • I already have 6 Softbank SIM cards for Japan and 2 of these are full sims, which the MF90 takes, and are otherwise useless as they won't fit our phones.

$39 seems good value compared to a weeks rental.

        It also matches Softbank's 3G on 2100MHz.

  • I seem to remember in another Telstra 4G modem thread, talk of frequency changes potentially rendering certain models basically obsolete.
    Can anyone shed some light?

I used to use Pocket WiFi style devices for years. But with cheap 4G smartphones for around same price (e.g. expired $40 Huawei Y550 deal), there seems little need for a dedicated mobile broadband modem.

They perform same function with tethering, support multiple connections, and importantly have internet access in the device itself. Phones are usually lighter than modems & often means carrying 1 less device. Battery life may be a consideration, but my 550 works great, posting on it now on data SIM.

Don't forget to stock up on the $30 Telstra Starter Packs for $1 @Coles.
With new Data Pass plans, it gives you 3GB PLUS $30 credit (can't be transferred to another SIM with creditme2u, but reportedly can be used for Google Play purchases).

    • How long does the credit last for Data Pass plans?

      • +1

Varies by recharge - see deal or my Data Passes - the new way to buy data from 12/5/15 in Telstra Wiki.

        • Will it matter whether you buy the sim card for Tablets, or for Tablets and Phones? Do they function the same?

If you take the Tablets only sim card and get the Data Pass plan, can you still insert it into a phone and make calls with it?

        • @lostn:
Any Starter Pack except the old iPad ones do the same job.

Discussion on calls on data plans - no calls. Smart phones can make 000 calls. Calls to Telstra may work.

        • @brucefromaustralia: If mobile + tablets sim can do data and calls but mobile broadband can't do calls, why would anyone take the latter?

        • @lostn:
No it is when you initially activate any SIM as data (Data Pass) - it is data only, no outgoing calls. You choose what you want to do with the SIM at the activation step. All are SIMs, so can receive calls.

I posted details of how to unlock for free in the MF91 deal I posted ages ago. Was pretty easy & quick.

    • Nice. Shame I missed it.

      • (Forgot I had written that how to advice.)

As a conciliation, enjoy Japan. It's hard not too.

        • Thx. Are you Boss fan Bruce ?

          @scottb721:
No, but big fan of Japan.
My avatar is the Kanji (phonetically) for Bruce.

    • Agh - I unlocked the MF91, NOT MF90! Sorry. Still worth a try using same free method.

  • Can you insert a $30 starter prepaid sim into one of these devices and use the credit from that?

      • Can that device also accept Amaysim sim cards?

        • Unlocked this modem will accept any telcos SIM, with the right APN settings.
          Locked, I don't know.
Details of how I unlocked free above.
