    Bloody cheap for…

    AM/FM/DVD/CD/MP3 multiformat Player

    Motorised 7inch HD screen

Full Ipod control with charge function

    SD/USB input

    High Power 4 x 50 watt

    Adjustable bass/treble/fader/balance control

    Preset Eq

Reverse camera input with Auto switching

    Remote control

    3 RCA Preouts (F/R/S)

    Bluetooth with external mic

    Bluetooth audio streaming

But I just installed a Sony Xplod MEXN5050BT Bluetooth head unit in the car, operated by a $27 Huawei 7" Tablet from Coles. Made a cradle so it pops onto the dash. It works great for Bluetooth music, movies, & offline navigation instructions through the stereo. Even installed an app to show & take video/photos from a $37 Samsung 16Mp camera with WiFi to the tablet. No one can believe the good looking touch screen system cost just over $100 :-).
Still that's about twice this, with a motorised unit. But the Sony quality was worth it.

    • +1

been installing car audio for 12+ years. Sony and quality don't go in the same sentance for car audio unfortunately but I like your setup, we've done a ton like this, only drama is what state your in, here in SA it's an auto defect unless you have a hardware switch on the tablet preventing any function but audio apps while driving its crazy.

Apparantly nsw and qld is pretty bad for this, still it's the cheapest best way to get a crisp display, road aps, just avoid using xplod or kicker speakers with your nice setup!

      • +2

        Thanks for the advice.

ABC's "The Checkout" covered phone based GPS use in program over a week back. Needs to be "commercial" phone holder in all States, except SA & NT where it's a big no-no :-(
I'm in Queensland, so will be careful.

It's a cheap install to replace a cassette HU - so anything is an improvement in an older Honda Accord in near mint condition ;-) (car was free anyway - from relative)

'Quality' was only a comparative term there with, for me, the relatively unknown brand in this deal ;-)
Saw your response about quality of JBS to my misplaced comment. Sony can be crap, but happy so far, but it's very new.

It's a Sony Xplod MEXN5050BT Bluetooth head unit from JB knocked down to $80 (including pretty useless Hoover CarVac) operated by a $27 Huawei 7" Tablet from Coles (bright IPS display, BT, GPS, but only single core which has been no issue with Sony's Remote App).

Was given unused free speakers by neighbour which will do for now. Upgrade later, avoiding the Sony & kicker.

Bought the $108 7" Orion in this deal. I've bought the Japanese brand before in home electronics & like it. So will compare & as usual, keep the best & sell the rest.

For me, it's all about the price, as I hardly drive anywhere. I have asked myself why I bothered doing an install, but the old system had to go. Enjoying BT in the car :-)

I need to replace my Mitsubishi lancer 2007 car tuner. I have no idea about how to replace it. Do you know if this can be DIY job or should I get professional to do it. I am about to buy this $33 JPS tuner

I need to replace my Mitsubishi lancer 2007 car tuner/headunit. I have no idea of how much it involves to replace it. Do you know if this can be DIY job or should I get professional to do it. I am about to buy this $33 JPS tuner

        • +1

have not worked on an 07 lancer, if you can find a guide on line to removing whatever stock setup is there i'd say go for it yourself, don't cut the harness, get a harness to iso adapter and to save the money splice that and solder it to the jbs harness and your good to go.

If its using some sort of unit which is integrated with climate control or something find a reputable local business that can do a c/fab as you might need to get around this like in the newer model fords and it can be a pain.

You want to avoid places that do QnD installs and avoid doing one yourself (quick and dirty, which means open it up, cut the factory harness/plugs and solder new wires in, a lot of people wont touch a car this has been done to, no matter how much you and the business tell you this is 'professional').

        • @acex1138: Thanks Mate! Sounds like its not simple plug and play job. I have decided to do get it done by professional. Could you tell me how much I am looking to pay if I get it done by someone. I don't think it has any climate control integrated.

        • @Danger:

it can be a simple plug and play job with the correct harness plug, but if you wanna go the route of someone doing it, easiest thing is finding a student of electronics on gumtree, in adelaide it's simple because thats me, you just avoid the other 1000 'professionals' who are self taught at home and do it, thanks to mighty car mods theres probably a few million of them in sydney.

Headunit install is one of the easiest car jobs, and for someone who has tools and knows what they are doing even simpler, if they don't have to bypass climate control or use any custom fascia's $20 max.

If they need to do any fascia's (the plastic plates etc) add another 20, if they have to us an adapter harness (make sure they arent cutting the harness) add another 20.

So for someone honest who knows what they are doing 40-60 is fair if its like this.

Unfortunately you find JB's, autobarn and a lot of other places will charge you a LOT more, and all they do is cut and solder which you don't want.

        • @acex1138
Really appreciate your help mate. Now i know few things about headunit installation. It would help me negotiate the price with installer.

  • I recently purchased a 7" single din motorized touchscreen that from the US cost $249 at its absolute cheapest price, and talked the guy on gumtree to do it for $100 for me.

So this price to get a couple for my mates was a no brainer. That being said can't wait to see my local dodgey backyard 'professionals' hocking these for the cheap price of $200 with $75 install in the next few days. Arg.

"Directed Electronics Australia are pleased to announce the immediate availability of the Orion AVR6.1 Audio Visual Navigation Receiver with Digital Radio (DAB+).

The AVR6.1 is 'The Intelligent Source' - a world first 2-Din source unit available in Australia offering DVD / CD / MP3 / WMA, AM / FM / Digital Radio (DAB+), SD / USB Multimedia, Auxiliary Input, Bluetooth, GPS Navigation (NAVTEQ), and Reversing Camera (up to 3 cameras). Utilising the power of the Windows CE Operating System, together with the fastest processor on the market, the AVR6.1 is truly a remarkable experience.

Designed exclusively in Australia for Australian conditions and consumers, the Orion AVR6.1 offers the ultimate in connectivity.

To ensure you're always connected, the AVR6.1 also features full iPod/iPhone control, with SD / USB Multimedia and Auxiliary Input, as well as Bluetooth 2.0 Hands free Mobile Phone connectivity.

With built in GPS Navigation using the latest NAVTEQ maps combined with HEMA Maps, the AVR6.1 is a very versatile Navigation system, offering users 3 years of mapping updates at no additional cost. This unit is a true all-in-one model for those wanting the very best."

In a quick search, there was no reference to it on http://www.orioncaraudio.com

A very short Whirlpool discussion, (first 4 years ago, recent 3 years ago)

"'Tis a nice unit, startup time could be faster, but it's running Windows CE so a delay is inevitable unfortunately.
The navigation seems to run entirely from the SD card, which means you won't be able to access media from SD card at the same time as navigating.
          DAB+ works well."

          And

"Map Upgrades will be available at https://www.naviextras.com/shop/portal/home.
Once available you simply put your SD card into the computer and the website will recognise your mapping and offer a free update for the AVR6.1."

There is a pdf for this unit, but my phone won't download it.

        • Good for a look at the unpacked unit, and a laugh at the RRP ;-)

          RRP: $2,499.00
          OUR PRICE: $699.00
          Sale Price: $598.85
          Savings: $1,900.15
And that was a demo model too.

        • But the probable lack of manufacture support & firmware updates (Warranty must be included, but will it exist?), the possibility of missing parts in display models (see photo - there are a lot of small & necessary parts), map updates may be unavailable, may not make this a great deal.

          Then there is the reported:
slow boot with Windows CE (who wants to wait for their music? Can hardly wait for the startup tune!),
USB must be formatted as FAT32 (ancient 320GB limit),
failure to play or even find some video files (even when in accepted format).

The world has moved on since 2011.

But I'm not at the point of regret for buying this unit. Those potential failings are grounds for a refund, so I'll enjoy the ride & look forward to the adventure.
(Already having a successful install with good navigation & free map updates, latest iPhone & Android supported, likelihood of better apps to come, current technology standards, etc can make the purchase less of a risk.)

  • Woah thats crazy cheap! cheers OP

jbs I have dramas with the extremely low end speakers they supply, the headunits and non low end amps you'l actually find built into luxury cars.

I do a lot of audio installs, some ford 4wd's and alfa romeos actually use JBS as well as JBL (nope not a misprint). For the price not too bad, I honestly think they're both a steal.

        • We don't know yet if maps can be updated free, otherwise a cheap unit with expensive to update 4 year old map is useless.

        • @brucefromaustralia:

Too True. I live in Adelaide though..not much has changed in 4 years ;)

  • Received a PM about a sad 7" Orion… it's the problem of buying display stock :-(

I just bought one of these on clearance from JB hifi but it is missing quite a lot of things (digital aerial, double din cage, instructions, and maybe it was meant to come with an sd card?)and one of them is what i believe is a redemption code to allow me to aquire updated maps for the headunit from naviextras. I havent got any instructions with it either so this assumption could be totally wrong.

You wouldn't by any chance have any of these map update files still on your computer that you could email me or if they are too big maybe a dropbox link? Or if I am way off base just update me on the process i need to go through.

I have searched high and low and you might be my only hope to finding out more about these maps!

Not quite the classic "Help Me, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You're My Only Hope" PM ;-)

I am waiting for mine to be delivered, so can only sympathise.

Posted here as others may be able to help by at least posting a copy of the instructions.

A search shows little more than a promotional video on YouTube, a pdf from Orion (which my phone won't download), a 4 post whirlpool discussion, but little else. Orion's site shows it as unknown, but contacting them should help with a pdf of the manual at least.

    My response:
I didn't realise I bought a display unit until I went back to the deal the next day :-( There was little time to check it out during the sale.

As I warned in my comment, display stock can notoriously lack vital parts. If it's been on display for a while, some will lack everything except main unit. They just throw the box out the back, grab parts for other jobs, it gets lost. (I used to buy that type of stock from Dick Smith managers I knew for a steal - they couldn't easily sell electronics without power supply or remote).

How did you work out what is missing, without the instructions? I had posted a link to a photo of an expensive display stock unit, showing the large amount of parts.

I may receive less than you did.

So, sorry to hear so much was missing. Maps would have been on the SD card. Even with the update code, map updating may not be available. Agh! 4 year old maps with no update! (available for a fee!)

On whirlpool discussion I linked to, someone had connected the car's unused window antenna as DAB+ antenna.

Of course you are entitled to a refund….
    So sorry for your losses.

    The 'fun' begins…

Even with all parts, I doubt there will be support or necessary firmware updates for this unit. Warranty on a 4 year old unit that had been on display/used may not exist. That's something to take up with JB.

Then there's "but it's running Windows CE so a delay is inevitable unfortunately" from Whirlpool. Hello 2011 :-(

    • So if anyone tracks down the manual pdf, or receives the maps SD - please uploaded to OzBargain.

A request for the manual had been sent to Orion. I have requested a parts list to be posted here.

Of course contact JB regarding missing parts - it's their responsibility. But they've probably long gone. You may receive a store credit, if you stress how important the parts are for the unit, they will be expensive or unobtainable (GPS sensor) etc.
Or ask for a refund :-(

    • Installation comment 2011
Note the need to connect to hand brake switch, etc.

software failure on Orion using Windows CE

Failures with new Orions - parking camera, loading CD

      Comments on the Orion… from 2011 :-)
Go look at this new Orion AVR6.1, i promise it is entirely porn, its a smidge expensive at roughly $1750 (1999 rrp) but i promise its the best around
Also suggestion to add a (12V) SetTopBox / PVR to 1 of the 3 AV inputs for parking camera to use as a TV - probably at terrible low res!
Knew I had a use for the $21 1TB PVR in the sale ;-) Just add an inverter…

The Orion AVR6.1 is the ducks nuts of DAB+ units and our most popular unit in the shop at the moment

/ mod to car PC / DAB+ Antenna

        16-06-2011, 11:04 PM
had a couple units freezing up a bit.

I've sold and installed plenty of them… the first firmware update sorted out the freezing issue. This was sorted within two weeks of them being released onto the market.

I have been modifying the unit to run as a carPC with very good results so far. You wont find any other units that are capable of this. I am also developing additional software upgrades for this unit that will be distributed via Orion (such as a Pandora internet radio interface).

I see a real future for this unit, not a limited 12 month life span like the mainstream brands.

        DAB+ ANTENNA
        10-12-2011, 11:16 PM
It comes with a small pad like antenna that you can either hide under the dash or stick to the windscreen (better option).

Great to hear you are enjoying it mate… It was great catching up with you too :)

        11-12-2011, 12:42 AM
antenna on the windscreen isn't really offensive, wire loop itself is fairly invisible, just the adaptor block that you notice relly, but ive put mine on the upper left corner so not in a high viewing area, don't really see it

  • +1

Here is a link to what should be coming in your orion box. http://i.imgur.com/2IPrAnC.jpg?1

From the optional box only the DAB antenna should be there, the rest are not supplied as far as I know but I am happy to be proven wrong!

I hope you all have more luck getting everything than i did.

    • What? The iPod isn't included ;-)

      Thanks for that.

Comparing that to the photo of unpacked box, I was expecting more parts. But I suppose the cables will take up a couple of plastic bags seen on the right of the photo.

    • For anyone who has installed a Head Unit before, it should be understandable.

      WIRING HARNESSES
      HDR15 - main wiring
POWER (4 wires: +12V, chassis, ACCessories - from key switch, illumination - from dimmer)
      Speakers (4x2 wires)
Switched power (1 wire, to power amps, cameras, motorised antenna)
      And the odd one -
handbrake sensor (1 wire, no movies while driving, from switch on handbrake)

Installation & what happens when you forget to connect illumination & handbrake wires in Orion - comment 8

So you'll need the wiring diagram for those!

      HDR11 - USB/iPod ?
      HDR14 - Audio/AV (to amps) ?
      HDR16 - GPS sensor
Those just plug in the back.

      Remainder is mounting hardware.

I've only done 1 install, so that's from my very imperfect memory & never seeing this unit.

  • Found a link to the manual online if anyone else is missing it. http://orion.webhouseaustralia.com.au/site/files/7043/Orion%…

    • Yes, I mentioned that pdf earlier.

The manual covers how to use the unit, but lacks the vital installation instructions & wiring diagrams for the HDR15 - main wiring harness! Get that wrong & you fry it :-(

That is usually a separate document, not necessary if you had the unit installed.

I posted above about a person modifying the Orion into a car PC.

  • So if anyone with an Orion…

    ORION MISSING PARTS LIST

Upload needed. Helpful to those who don't receive them.

Maps (contained on SD card?) may be missing for some.

yep, agree (too bad it does not have GPS)

  • Still waiting for 7" Orion in Brisbane.

    • Received my "Orion" this morning… included everything except SD card with maps… and the Orion unit :-(

They had substituted a display JBS306 in the Orion box, with the Orion installation parts. Got a bonus (TV) antenna though.

      In discussions with JB…

      So my parts list includes:
Double DIN cage, 2 release keys, black plastic finishing surround, mounting screws.

Manual, cleaning cloth & installation instructions sheet.

Remote, Satellite Navigation CD, case for SD cards, (no SD cards containing maps, no activation code for 3 year free updates).

      Cables
      HDIR11 USB & iPhone cable
      HDIR13 camera assembly cable
      HDIR14 audio output to amps
HDIR15 main power & speaker (missing - comes with display unit, cables have been cut)
      HDIR16 GPS module
DAB5.0M digital radio antenna (+ TV antenna from another device)

      • Wow, as if they put a display jbs in there!
That's a nice slap in the face considering you could have gotten a brand new one for $50 if you wanted

        • I think you were listening in on my complaint to JB ;-)

So I've got a used unit for twice the price you paid :-(

Pity I can't even try out the JBS - only shows No Video despite inserting DVD, but can play with the motorised screen. Without the remote, can't explore any more.

JB want it back. Thought I might have got it free. I've been promised another unit will be sent. Local store has agreed to hang onto this unit, in case next unit lacks installation gear & manuals this one has.

        • @brucefromaustralia:
          Hahaha :P
I have found you can do pretty much anything without the remote, you just have to press the back button in the top right to get back go the main menu.

Have you connected the break wire to ground? Otherwise it won't play videos at all as it thinks you're driving.

hopefully you get what you ordered soon! Let me know how you go :)

        • @shapers:
Yes, had connected the brake wire to ground. Otherwise get the message to keep my eyes on road.

This may be an older display model - no back button in top right, just buttons at bottom (Power/MOD - takes me to Aux input, , up/down screen movement, BND - assume is AM/FM, Vol-/+, eject).

          Certainly no menu showing.

Connecting a DVD player to AUX & selecting that in MOD, displays the video input.

          Will experiment in morning.

        • @brucefromaustralia: Sorry my bad, I meant in the top right corner of the screen there should be a back arrow which you touch.

It's a nice unit, you might not want to take it back once you get used to it ;)

        • @shapers:
That's OK. I thought it may be a soft button, as pressing there does something on this model, but does not take me to the menu. No arrow though.

What does the menu look like?

Sometimes I get 'Aux' or 'Car' in the top left of the screen. Will try pressing there when it pops up.

But my guess is we are using different versions of the same unit :-(

        • @shapers:
Touching the screen in the top right seems to turn off the screen. The only way to turn the screen back on is to power down & start again.

As I don't have more than power & A/V in/out connected on the unit on my bench, it is hard to test further. Still can't play from SD card, or operate radio.

CD & DVD play after a while, but can't control tracks played. Both show my viewing favourite "NO VIDEO SIGNAL". Ejecting goes back to previous input (A/V).

I think I would be quite impressed with a complete new unit at $53 :-)

        • +1

@brucefromaustralia: Thats weird, yeah sounds like they're different versions.
Shame you cant use all the features, the radio and bluetooth are the best parts.
Heres some pics of the radio, menu and cd (little bit sunny)
          here here2 here3

        • @shapers:
Now you're just making me jealous ;-)

Physically same unit, same buttons, but possibly different firmware… just realised it may do with a reset.

Had just packed up unit, before that insight.

          And now it's working ;-)
Looks like your photos. So will play with it & return tomorrow.

Touchscreen now works to select tracks, play DVD, etc. FM radio works with a coat-hanger :-) Videos play from SD card.

          Thanks :-)

        • @brucefromaustralia: Haha thats awesome!
check out the dialing feature, probably my favourite thing on the unit along with bt music streaming haha.

no problem, let me know how you go with your return!

        • @shapers:
Yes, just set up Bluetooth link with phone. Made a call. Playing tracks from the phone. But can't control Android phone from unit (select tracks).

But not quite as good as the Bluetooth set up I already installed (outlined above) which has voice activation, for a few dollars more of course. I'm just having a good play with these.

Current setup: Sony Xplod MEXN5050BT Bluetooth head unit ($80), operated by a $27 Huawei 7" Tablet from Coles. Made a cradle so it pops onto the dash.

It works great for Bluetooth music, movies, calls, & offline navigation instructions through the stereo. Even installed an app to show & take video/photos from a $37 Samsung 16Mp camera with WiFi to the tablet. That's the advantage with a system that uses apps.

But a nice setup with this unit at a great price!

        • @brucefromaustralia: Ahh
thats pretty cool. i can control my android through the headunit (using a htc).

for navigation with this unit im using my phones maps while playing music through bt, whenever maps gives instructions the music stops then starts again when instructions are done.

Yeah cant complain at $53 haha :P

        • @shapers:
It's been confined to its box, awaiting it's demise.

I found the touch screen too unresponsive, compared with the $27 tablet control for the Sony. I got frustrated pressing the same icon many times before it responded.

Control of video on SD card was not possible (I don't have the manual or remote). Every time I inserted the card, the same video automatically started, could not find how to fast forward or select another video.

Often pressing the power button would not shut it down.

I'm sure I would have worked it out given time. I enjoyed th fun.

Thanks for your help, shapers :-)

        • @brucefromaustralia:
Ahh fair enough, for me the sensitivity is pretty good, ive had other double din units that you have to push down on the screen for them to register!

For power you have to hold it down for about 3 seconds to turn off :)

No problem! Let me know if you end up geting your orion :)

        • @shapers:
I kept holding it down 10 seconds, but it refused to shut down. But it was a used model, I didn't have the advantage of reading the manual, & all that happened was it muted the sound.

If the touch control is used when driving, it's responsiveness is important. But there is always the remote. I mainly use the remote on the Sony. The tablet or phone can control it, but require mounting. The remote is always ready for action & I'm lazy. But a responsive 7" screen with a few large icons is a pleasure to use.

I think I have been spoilt with the 7" GPS (free offline maps) with instructions through the Sony, etc.

So the Orion will cost double yours, but I probably won't be any more impressed by it. Especially if it's major feature - the maps aren't included, warranty on a display model is unknown, etc.

But talk about modding the Windows CE system sounds interesting to me. Or it would have back in 2011 when this unit was new ;-)

        • @brucefromaustralia: Yeah must have been a dodgy unit.
Yeah true nothing like a good screen!
Id hope the maps are including, hopefully if they arent you can talk them into getting one for you!
