  • Can you install an mSATA drive into an ordinary laptop with a SATA HDD? (say 2-3 years old)…?

Or is there a special bracket or mount required?

    • No, the mSATA interface is very different to a 2.5" interface. You would need a special mSata to 2.5" SATA bracket, yes.

      • Will it fit in a Macbook Pro Retina?

        • which model do you have? this is compatible with macbook pro 15 retina 2012 mid and for later model its not

        • @ravian29: this is compatible with 2012 rmba? Last time I check most sad on the market are NOT compatible with rmba.and the compatible ones are very expensive.

      • Ah thanks.

Looks like a converter like this will do the trick:

The only issue I can see is the presumably extremely cheap logic board and it's storage controller on that PCB could introduce some latency along the way to the storage controller on the laptop and thereby give you worse performance than direct connection to the motherboard.

        • @Amar89: Great point. The logic board alone could potentially decrease performance and odds are not many people would think to purchase a decent convertor over an inexpensive cheap counterpart.

        • @Amar89: what do you recommend for an old laptop?(first generation i3 us what I am talking about)

        • @siggy213:

Appears that there are standard SATA interface drives available for just as cheap at the amazon link Cheap Charlie posted below. Better to avoid the conversion it seems. Cheers!

        • @alwayseric:
it depends on what the specs of your laptop are. If it takes sata (which I assume it does from the age), personally I'd buy sata.
Check your laptop specs to be sure.
If you're buying an ssd now to replace a standard hard drive, you likely get a good couple of years out if it at least, it makes a world of difference.

        • @Amar89:
I don't think so, there is no logic. it simply is a converter, passing through the signal.
          It notes:
The speed and other properties is not changed, only form conversion interface, because such transformation does not need through the integrated circuit chip

    • also make sure your laptop requires mSata, watch for hard disk with caddy

  • the same Samsung 850 EVO 1TB mSATA SSD was $498 aud with $50 cash coupon on shopping express few days ago, now its out of stock. I also want to buy one and waiting if they re list it

  • +1

Was looking at these for a while and decided I didn't need anything more than 120GB for my OS so decided to buy a Crucial M550 128GB locally for about $90, though this is still a great deal if you don't mind waiting.
Also OP you've accidentally written 250GB twice instead of 120GB/250GB!

    • Thanks - fixed.
I'd be happy with an M550 too

  • for laptop user, better get sata version not msata.
easier to install without any other converter required, correcT?

    • +1

Depends if your laptop has an msata slot or not

      • what is the easiest way to find out?

        • +1

Check your laptop specs to see if it has an mSATA slot…
Then google what an mSATA drive/slot looks like and then open up the your laptop HDD removal bay and have a look to see if you have one spare, though apparently mSATA looks similar to mPCIE.

    • +1

This is not true. Like djevolution said, it depends if your laptop supports MSATA. If it does use MSATA, you will not be able to put a SATA drive in, and vice versa (unless you get an adapter).
You need to buy the correct drive format for your laptop. The specs of you laptop will show either SATA or mSATA.

      • "Acer Extensa 5635 Notebook, Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo T6570 2.1GHz, 2GB DDR3, 15.6" WXGA Wide, 320GB SATA HDD, Mobile Intel Integrated 3D Graphic, DVD SuperMulti DL, Speakers, Webcam, 802.11 a/b/g/n, Gigabit Ethernet, USB 2.0, VGA, Card Reader, 6 Cell Battery, Windows 7 Home Premium (EX5635-652G32MN-7HP)"

thats my laptop spec. so it does use SATA. thanks guys!

  • I'm looking to get an external enclosure to go with something like this.
    Which do you guys recommend?

  • +1

ARC has the 1TB cheaper - plus its local
    https://www.arc.com.au/product/55467

  • damn just bought transcend 256gb for $120 local

  • I'm after a 500gb mSATA. Do you guys think this ShoppingExpress deal is still good in comparison? I think I'd prefer to buy locally, and it's not that much of a price difference… what do you guys think?

    • I also prefer to buy local, your choice in the end.
Warranty is the same regardless, except if you buy in Australia you have the choice of asking Shopping Express to look after warranty, although I wouldn't bother and would go straight to Samsung anyway.

      • Can you clarify what you mean by warranty being the same? So Samsung Aus will still give this 10 year warranty as they would for the one on shopping express?

        • Samsung mSATA SSD only has 5yrs warranty

        • It's the difference between Evo and Pro models.
Evo models (both SATA & MSATA) come with 5yr warranty.
Pro models (only come in SATA) have 10yr warranty.

You're comparing warranty for different models.

  • Decent performance. For the 250GB model:
SEQUENTIAL READ SPEED: Up to 540 MB/sec Sequential Read
SEQUENTIAL WRITE SPEED: Up to 520 MB/sec Sequential Write
RANDOM READ SPEED: (4KB, QD32): Up to 95,000 IOPS Random Read
RANDOM WRITE SPEED: (4KB, QD32): Up to 88,000 IOPS Random Write
MEMORY SPEED: Samsung 32 layer 3D V-NAND with Samsung 512 MB Low Power DDR3 SDRAM
    CONTROLLER: Samsung MGX Controller

    From: http://benchmarkreviews.com/25865/samsung-ssd-850-evo-msata-…

The read speed of 540MB/sec is 4320 Mb/sec (notice lower case 'b') or 4.3Gbps, which is typical for a modern SSD running over 6Gbps SATA.
