  • What sort of things do you run off yours while camping? Just lighting?

    • think of a kitchen appliance. chances are, you can get a 12v version

    • we run LED lights, a mini air compressor for air beds and USB charging for phones (rarely necessary). Also a small fan at the Xmas camp when it was hot.
I've also used if to jumpstart the car when some child left the door open all day while camping.
It isn't adequate for running a fridge or really any appliance that heats.
I also have a small 240v inverter. This allows it to power the instantaneous gas hot water ignition at home and the ADSL modem during blackouts. It was very handy to charge phones when we had no power for a few days.

      • You mean I can use this to still have internet when the power goes out?! Wow, why have I never thought of this? First person to find me a good deal on a 240v inverter gets a cookie :P Cheers for the tips mskeggs :D

        • also, i you have a dashcam(s), you can power them off this thing while your car is parked

        • Handy if you have to leave your car parked in a rough part of town ;)

        • +1

@Riczter: which, in Perth, is like e.v.e.r.y.w.h.e.r.e.!.

      • Mskeggs, where did you get your 240v inverter? Do you have the link? I want to keep my PC and modem running during blackouts.

This is similar to the inverter I have.
Note it is pure sine wave, you can get cheaper switching wave inverters that could potentially be a problem for some electronics (laptops mainly, I think).
          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Pure-Sine-Wave-Inverter-300W-600W…

The battery in this jump starter holds approx 200Wh of power (0.2kWh) assuming a 17Ah battery (I actually think this may well have a 21Ah or 25Ah). The TP-Link modem/router here draws 9v at 0.8A, so about 7watts. Figure you will only get 80% of the battery power out due to inefficiencies, and probably 20% loss on the inverter, you can probably run the modem for about 20 hours.

          @mskeggs:
Keeping your PC running is harder. A gaming PC can draw 300watts, so would last less than 40mins on this battery, less still with the monitor.
A frugal laptop would likely run 6 or more hours off its internal battery, figure you could recharge it 2 or 3 times before the jump-start battery was depleted.

      • mskeggs, did you use it to jumpstart the car after already using it for other camping purposes or was it unused since last charge?

I am picturing myself using it for running various little bits and pieces whilst camping and then finding I am stuck camping forever because the car battery has gone flat but the jump starter won't work 'cos I wasted it on air beds and phones.

        • It lasts for a week of camping without recharge running a 4w LED bulb 6 hours per night and air bed pump roughly 10mins every day or so.
And it jump started the car at the end of another four day trip. The battery in the car wasn't completely dead, just whir-whir. Left it hooked up for 10-15mins then it started.
edit: comment below says 2x19aH batteries, so more than double the power reserves of the one I have

        • @mskeggs:
          Thanks.

  • I've had one of these for maybe 4 years, use it all the time. Still going strong holds a charge for literally years.

    • how often do you charge it and for how long??

      • You should charge it every 3 to 6 months if you are not using it. You also need to charge it if you used it (to jumpstart a car or for camping). May not need to charge if you just used it once to re-charge your phone or tablet via the usb outlet. Maximum 8 hours recharge. As for all batteries, overcharging will kill the battery.

      • To be honest I've charged it maybe 3-4 times. I use it to jump start mine and my familys cars.

Use varies I've gone 6 months and never touched it and 3 months using it twice a day, usually use it once a month.

        • what cars do you have?

        • @lzwdavid:
Ford escape with a dodgy Battery and an old Honda Accord with a dodgy driver.

  • and i thought the $135 i paid for it last year was cheap.

    • I thought the $123 I paid in store yesterday was a deal.

      Bugger!

Do you reckon the Club Plus cash refund "if they drop the price" will be honoured in this case…?

      • i desperately needed mine when i bought it so i would likely have paid the full price :\

definitely should get your credits since it's within the 2 weeks. if you don't see it, call them up

  • I worked at SCA for 8 years, I bought this in my first year. Was and is still going strong when I left it with my parents and moved interstate. Have to jump on it at this price. Great unit.

If the battery does stuff up, you can replace it with another sealed battery. But if they go to this price, might as well buy a new one.

what size (Ah) battery does this have in it?

    • I have a cheaper one rated to 900amps which I have cracked open and has a 17Ah battery inside. So to handle the higher discharge I figure this has to be at least 21Ah or 23Ah, but I don't know for sure.

    • 38A /92 x 19A/H) sealed lead agm batteries

  • Might be a dumb question but would these be suitable for the typical 4 cylinder 1.8L petrols?

    • I guess the answer is pretty positive.

    • Suits 8 cylinder petrol engines & diesel 4 cylinder up to 2.5 litre capacity

      easy.

  • Purchased this afternoon. Manual states 38 a/h battery(2 x 19 a/h).

  • I cant work out how to do the click and collect, I cant see an option for it, only delivery. Any pointers?

    • looks like they've modified the listing to remove the click and collect option?
