Arrived yesterday. The phone has some malware on it, the browser is being hijacked once in a while (both the stock and a new Chrome I've installed) to display ads. Horrible experience - not even sure my Gmail password is safe now :(

    • Also, I've rooted the phone just now to remove the junk from it using this method:
      http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/development/ufficial…

      • Are those instructions sufficient as they are, or did you need to adjust/add/change anything from those instructions? Gonna have to get around to doing mine, there is so much crap bundled with these K3's.

        • +1

They are enough, but the phrasing is horrible.
          The 10.000 feet overview is:

You need the android debug tools (adb and fastboot) to flash the recovery partition with CWM.
You'll need to enable USB debug mode (google for it).
Install the recovery CWM with the tools mentioned above, boot the phone into recovery with pressing vol up/down/power on power-on.
It will give you a special user interface where you can install the root tools from the zip file (superSU…zip).

        • @ocoolio: Jebus that was a bit more straightforward, cheers.

        • +1

Read this the latest V3 AOSP seems good.

        • @superforever: Thanks for that, reviews look real promising.

  • Still Waiting ….

    • Paid on 29-May
    • Received email from GB on 04-Jun : Order Shipped
    • Tracking on Singpost showed : 08-Jun - Despatched to overseas (Country code: AU)
    • Mine just said on Singpost.

17-06-2015 Despatched to overseas (Country code: AU)

lol … yours despatched on 8/6/15 still waiting I have a long way to wait.

    • @Paul11 If you look at the profile of people who receive their phone on Wednesday you will find that they are from NSW or Sydney or Perth. May be it takes two days for Australia Post to ship from Sydney to Melbourne. I am exactly the same case as you( bought, shipped and despatch dates and location ). Be patient.

    • Arrived today via snail mail.
As other has reported the original seal was broken.

    • Finally arrived on 22 Jun. Lots of crap apps installed. It won't even let me install "Google Now" launcher. Was able to install another launcher (Yahoo Aviate), but then it won't allow me to add widgets to home screen. That is what annoys me most about these Chinese phones. Now need to root it.

  • I also ordered one from GearBest on 29 May & paid for Expedited Shipping, the web site said only take 3-7 days for delivery. I just got it yesterday. I think they are not honest with the delivery timeframe. The fone is come with Chinese instructions which I could not read it, plus charger with Asia power plugin standard, anyway I can live with these minor problems. I haven't had time to play with the fone yet, will let you know how it goes. I still got some credits with GearBest but I think will not bying from their store anymore. That's is only my experience shopping with GearBest. Hope it helps someone out there.

    • Yes mine had chinese instructions and asian powerplug. B ut outside the box was a lose australian power adapter thingo, which I almost threw out by mistake..

  • I think I ordered mine on 11th, or was it 12th, from gearbest.
It was shipped yesterday, so I'm expecting to have it by the end of next week.
I've had nothing but good experiences from GB.

confirm lenovo k3 note is full of malware. when i receive my phone the box seal been broken. i think gearbest open it up and install a bunch of malware. you cant unistall it the normal way, your phone need to be rooted.
easy way to root follow the link.
    http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/one-click…

    • +2

Thanks, i just did an AVG scan and can confirm it has detected threats. I've never rooted a device before and will try the link you provided, thanks!
P.S the pre-loaded DU battery saver app keeps popping up every time i unlock the phone its so annoying!

They are not installed by gearbest … flashed the AOSP v3 ROM.

      http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2393953&r…

      • +1

it not lenovo that for sure. either gearbest do it or they bought from someone else that did. flashed rom is a bit to advance for me. but kingroot step is quite easy to do, just install the app and remove all the malware.

        • +2

Agreed but some said even rooted and removed bloatware, ads still popup during browsing.

        • +1

My understand is that the Lenovo's K3 Note is meant to be for the Chinese market only. The official Rom ( until now ) is not multi-language. The firmware from GearBest is not official, it is third party. GearBest is only a internet seller not a developer, I doubt they purposely put bloatware/malware in the Rom. AOSP v3 ROM is also a third party Rom code.

        • +1

          @mtrTen:

Yeah, from Whirlpool seems like the AOSP v3 ROM is the best so far.

Ordered mine on the 5th of June and it arrived today-Melbourne.

    • DHL?

      • It went through Singpost(dispatched on the 12th), received it from Auspost.

        • Mine ordered on 30May, Gearbest said dispatched on 13June but Singpost only received it on 17June.

          Now still waiting.

  • Mine arrived today as well!

    Model (K50-T5) Absolute CRAP!

Horrible firmware. (Supplied ST1511. Latest OTA ST1524)
Way too many questionable software pre-installed.
Custom launchers cause force close. (Tested Apex, Nova, Google Now and Z launcher).
Will not add widgets to custom launchers
Removing the built in antivirus related apps cause total system meltdown
Low current charging (Using Anker 40W charger)
Internal contacts app will not sync with Google account
Best of all, OTA breaks Play support. Have to manually flash 5.0 gapps package to restore some usability

    PITA!!!

    Pro: Great screen!

Forget the firmware came with it, just flash AOSP v3.

This phone is not for people want something good out of the box.

      • Already downloading….. Whole thing will be done in 5. Will report back how it goes. Thanks once again for leading me towards WP. Forgot all about it.

BTW for those who are reading this, start here: https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2393953

        V3 rom: http://www.movilesdualsim.com/tema/custom-rom-aosp-v2-anadid…

        • I am still waiting when did u order it?

        • @superforever:

          May 28. Standard post.

        • @liveyourlife:

OK I ordered later than you in that case should arrive soon.

        • +1

          @superforever:

Oh my god!! My eyes are having an orgasm after everything this phone has done to me! V3 AOSP is so much better!

      • i have difficulty finding the guide on flashing rom, aosp v3. i downloaded the ROM already around (700mb) can i able to follow https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LcO4yYNkTl8 but using AOSP V3 room instead?

        • No you can't…

First flash CWM and then install the zip file.

          http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/lenovok3

        • @liveyourlife:

Yeah the CWM in like boot recovery mode.

After that will have to boot into recovery mode and copy the zip file (ROM) on to the phone and use CWM and flash it.

Finally my phone arrived, ordered on 30May but paypal on 1June.

Seal broken I think they opened it to flash their ROM but I will flash it to AOSP v3 anyway.

      • @superforever How did you installed AOSP v3 ? I have seen this but it only mention the link to AOSP V3 Rom. Not sure how to install it ?

          http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2393953&p…

I am still doing it now, have a bit problem boot into recovery mode.

OK, finally booted into CWM, have to hold down Vol Up + Vol Down + Power and don't release it until boot into CWM.

        • @superforever: ok, thanks, Both links talk about installing CWM, but how to install AOSP v3 after that ?

        • @paul11:

          After you got CWM installed.

          1. Boot the phone in normal mode and enable MTP (so that you can copy file onto the phone).
          2. Download and copy AOSP v3 zip file onto the phone storage.
          3. Shut down the phone, power it on with vol up + vol down + power (hold it down until it boot into CWM.
          4. Select language.
          5. install zip.
          6. select zip, you may have to wipe data and cache first.
          7. shut down and reboot
        • @superforever: Awesome, many thanks. Will give it a try tonight. Were u able to install AOSP successfully ?

        • @paul11:

I have successfully install the AOSP it is so much better. The only down side the ROM didn't come with English Australia region settings. So have to do something to set it. Details check whirlpool.

        • +1

@superforever: Thanks, hope you uninstalled a spyware in ASOP v3. Check this out for details.

        • @superforever: U mean you are installing gravity framework or installing a new (LiMoNcHeLo) Rom ?

        • @paul11:
          Installing LiMoNcHeLo

I also want to try newer version of stock ROM, can I download and flash with CWM? Or I have to use Lenovo flash tool?

        • @superforever: My phone is stuck at booting after I installed AOSP v3. Can't get past that blue Andy face … ? Stuck at it for the last 35 mins …. :( I flashed with CWM.

        • @paul11:

My first attempt also stuck at the Lenovo logo, I just removed the battery and let it boot again.

        • @superforever: I tried removing battery, didn't worked.

        • @paul11:

          Did you flash supersu?

        • @superforever: Yep, flashed SuperSU, followed the procedure exactly as here http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/lenovok3

Seems like I need to install the stock (Vibe) ROM back again ….

        • @superforever: Nevermind, I flashed AOSP the 3rd time and and it finally booted …. sigh of relief….

        • @superforever: I hope, an official CyanogenMod is available soon for K3 note … This phone desperately need a decent, spyware free ROM …. I have 3 bank account apps, I am just so afraid about installing those bank apps on this AOSP ROM …!

        • @paul11:

I bought this phone for my boy so should be OK for teenager. I myself is using Zenfone 2.

BTW LiMoNcHeLo seems so far OK, double tap to wake up the phone and "V" to go directly to camera from lock screen.

          Didn't test LED yet.

  • anyone here having problem with your phone? i cant make skype call or even fb messenger call using default ROM?

    • I have had issues with internet not working on mobile data, also after installing Firefox and seeing it work just fine, it just stopped working a couple of days ago. In addition to this, as other users also reported, there were instances of the default browser being hijacked and also the Firefox. I still haven't done this yet, but am happy to hear these issues are largely rectified with CWM/AOSP v3.

  • Paid: 29 May
    Shipped by GearBest: 04 June
    Dispatched Singpost: 08 June
    Received Melbourne: 23 June

Phone arrived with Google Store installed and the phone works so smoothly on everything. The only small trouble I had was my Virgin Mobile SIM didn't work on data initially. Voice was fine. Had to manually put in an APN entry before data connection runs perfectly on Optus 4G network.

The ROM only has English/Chinese and the English one is pretty standard. However I do find that it seems to have trouble interpreting phone numbers between international and local format. Eg. I might saved a contact in +61 xxx xxx xxx format but when the number rings on 0xxx xxx xxx then the phone didn't recognise them as being the same number.

    • I had a similar problem with the Virgin Mobile APN and tried manually entering it but still couldn't get it to work. I also tried an iinet sim (which is also on Optus network) and could get mobile data to work but it would drop out and I would have to search for networks again and then select iinet 3g (it still gave 4g speeds, but was just a pain to have to keep reselecting it as searching takes a couple of minutes.) Anyway I installed AOSPv3 and have had no problems automatically connecting to either network and I can have both sims in and switch between the 2.

For the phone number issue you're having try changing the Number Match setting from 11 to 7 - details here

  • Anyone else waiting for their phone? Bought in May and I'm still waiting for it

    • Did you select free register mail? Any status update on Gearbest site? or Singpost?

      • I chose the $5.99 (3-7 days) option. Geabest and singpost update been the same ever since, "shipped".

        • I bought it on 30May with free register.

Singpost never update after shipped but I got it.

  • +1

I just got my Lenovo K3 note from Gearbest. Paid for express shipping but only got slow post and they are denying I paid for it (their invoices hide the extra details like shipping).

The phone box seal was opened inside the packaging so Gearbest must have opened the phone box. I am worried they have installed something or replaced a part such as a used battery. Did this happen to anyone else too?

    • The phone box seal was opened inside the packaging so Gearbest must have opened the phone box. I am worried they have installed something or replaced a part such as a used battery. Did this happen to anyone else too?

They opened it to install the Lenovo ROM.

      • +1

They opened it to install spam apps.
I never used either google account or lenovo account so it is pretty obvious.
Mine has "HOT GIRL" spam app, and etc.

        • Because they are system apps, so they are in the ROM they installed.

      • The fact that Gearbest is installing malware above and beyond what comes with the Lenovo phone is not in the description of the product so I am considering it a breach of the product description.

        • Yeah really don't know what ROM came with it originally. Why they have to install another one before they deliver it. This will give them more work to do unless the original ROM without English.

  • +1

I got this on 30 June (order from 30 May), found that it was opened, and it also had a dead pixel (very visible)
I wonder what was the test that they did. Anyway, I submitted the ticket regarding dead pixel which is a defected one.
it was on 30 June but haven't got the reply yet.
I will update if I get the reply from them.

    • +1

I'm pretty sure I will never get the reply from them.
      Stay away from GearBest

  • +1

i still have no received my phone. gearbest would not reply to my messages until i opened a dispute with paypal. then they try to scam me by saying they will refund my money after i close the dispute, knowing that if i close the dispute i have no way of getting my money back. then they try to scam me AGAIN by telling me to wait until the 45th day , which is 2 days after my dispute will close automatically

    • The longer you wait , they can keep the money in their pocket. I cancelled last month ,and after 2 days I got a very nice email from gearbest with their apology and crap…I forwarded that to paypal with my reasons. Paypal refunded it after 3hrs. Please grab the money back from these guys ASAP….You already missedout the JD deal…I am sure better deals will be on the way..
