    • i have it, but not with ssd. needs a fresh install as it comes with a lot of crapware. one would need to download win8.1 (not pro) because it doesnt come with recovery disk: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-AU/windows-8/create-reset-re…

      seems to work okay overall.

I bought this laptop from this deal, and have been happy with it. I couldn't find any review for it before I bought it, so I did a quick review for it on my blog. If you are interested in some benchmark results, feel free to have a read! http://www.tylergale.com/?p=95

Thanks for your review! Helped me finally decide to get it

Thanks for the review! One question, what did you use to remove the bloatware? You wrote:

After installing all of the crapware, the system was only using 528mb out of the 1.9GB of RAM.

Did you mean to write that you used a program called crapware to remove the bloatware to bring the RAM usage down?

Hi. Yeah I actually used a program called Decrap (freeware) which runs some analysis on the machine, and then allows you to remove all of the bloatware with a single click. Just be careful when using it though, as by default I noticed it was going to uninstall the wireless drivers (you can prevent this by unchecking the drivers section). Basically, once the bloatware was removed, there was a lot less programs starting up with the machine, which made the performance much better.

I noticed there actually was software that started with the machine, and all it did was start downloading even more bloatware. So I recommend killing your internet connection after downloading Decrap, and then re-enable it once the removal process is done.

Edit: I updated the portion of my blog you highlighted for clarity.

        • Thanks very much for your advice. I ordered one last night, and this morning the store rang me to say it was ready to pick up, must have had stock to hand. I installed decrap from a USB stick before going online. Very pleased to see most of the bloatware gone.

A nice end to an OzBargain day which included free coffee from Lüneburger, $2 and $3 P-R and G-P cheese from Woolies, and Preppie bottles from Coles. :)

  • Ok for anyone who buys this Laptop please come back and leave a short review if possible for future buyers, cheers :)

    • As commented earlier, I have done so on my blog http://www.tylergale.com/?p=95

I have also updated it based on comments from this thread!

      • thanks for your information, in the conclusion part of the review, it says 'Reading the benchmarks makes this machine look horrible. It doesn’t even remotely compare in sheer processing power to CPUs that herald from 2005' i have a compaq laptop bought around $1,200 in 2008, just wondering the CPU of my laptop is better than 2840?

        • +2

In terms of CPU grunt, it' unlikely. I found that the Celeron wasnt outperforming old Opterons that used original DDR ram, and had mild clock speeds of 2.4ghz. That being said, its unlikely your 2008 machine had hardware decoding of 1080p content, so the Celeron will do better here for you.

BUT (and this is the big thing), these machines are not made for that. They are basically word processing, and web browsing machines (I use for HTML and CSS development). To use them and expect them to be "all purpose and powerful" like a traditional CPU, is going to be the wrong thing.

So basically be honest with yourself before you buy it. If you want to just browse the net, write a few office documents, then its perfect (even with watching some media). But, if you think you might need to do some media editing, or some gaming, etc, then its just not going to be able to do that. I am really enjoying it for my purpose. I can basically turn it on (not worry about battery), and start coding. I don't need any more than that

        • @holisticboy:
Great. Thanks. So its more than capable of a bit of word processing, downloading torrents and watching 1080 videos then? Without the lag/delay wanting me to gouge my eyeballs?

          @andyman1908:

Yes It'd be capable for those uses. Just make sure you get rid of all the bloatware. I'd reinstall windows but that's just me.

        • @djevoultion:

Brilliant. Plan on installing ssd later down track so hopefully thatll help the cause. Being fairly illterate in computers whats the easiest way to reinstall a fresh windows? Ive done factory reset before but obviously the bloatware remained.

  • Ordered. Thanks op and all for answering my questions!

  • What size (thickness) SSD do I need to be looking for?
