  • What's the difference between this one with Acer ES1-411-C1WDESkb 411-C1WD (jb-hifi deal last time)?

    • +2

JB-HiFi - Quad Core Celeron, Up to 2.25GHz
TGG - Dual Core Celeron, up to 2.58GHz

      • +1

Im now looking at purchasing computer for wife. The jb hifi deal looked perfect! Too bad i was a couple of days too late.

Will this be quick enough to not have to want to throw it at the wall everytime she tries to use microsoft office or when alt tabing between programs? Can hdd be changed to sdd and ram upgradable? Or it is a waste of time with a crappy cpu?

        • Office should be fine, as should alt-tabbing. If you have dozens of programs or web tabs open it could go slow.

I don't think it is really worth upgrading. If your needs are simple it is cheap machine that will satisfy them. Upgrading RAM might help a bit, but the CPU will struggle with even with many apparently simple flash games. No matter how much time and money you throw at it, it will never be a fast machine.

        • @gmatht:

Thanks for the reply. So thats another vote towards going to quad core version?

        • +1

@andyman1908: FWIW, I bought one of the JB quad cores for the wife & dropped 8gb of RAM in it; this alone made it a categorically different machine…it really struggled with running a few apps & in particular multitasking with only 2gb! Now it's a little champion! ;)

IMHO even the jump to 4gb would be a significant improvement.

        • +4

The Quad Core Celeron from JB HiFi deal is a little beast!

          When equipped with a Samsung EVO 850 120GB SSD + Kingston 8GB 1.35V SODIMM RAM :)

          Absolutely loving it!

      • more core but slower than less core? i dont get this terminology

        • +3

          more cores = more heat
therefore lower max clocks for safer temps

        • the quad ĉore is faster look at the benchmarks

          Intel Celeron N2840 @ 2.16GHz

        • +1

          @paulaus:

not necessarily, if your application doesn't take advantage of the additional cores, its going to be slower due to the clock speed (if they where the same architecture.)

        • @krisspy:

It isn't that simple. There are so many variable involved, but you statement is only correct under certain conditions.

        • @wisc: which applications dont take advantage of it nowadays? does microsoft office?

        • +1

@not a bargain: sure it is, they're both bay trails, same size die, so the 840's are just 940's who didn't make the cut and had 2 cores disabled.

Were not comparing a 45w TDP desktop cpu to a 7.5w quadcore ulv cpu here.

      • I brought this from JB when they had the 15% off on the Quad core (made it $253) - then claimed $39 back - $214. Then I put a SSD in it - AMAZING machine for the price with an SSD in it - not so much with the hard drive.

One thing I noticed with the Quad was that the Broadcom drivers for 8.1 were crap - constant and frequent (like every 10 seconds) dropouts - and given we have about 6 wifi devices in the house and this was the only one failing, I gave up and I am running a Realtek USB 300M wifi instead. I am getting a mini PCI-E based on Realtek chipset to put internally in it as a replacement.

        • Assume you upped the RAM too?

        • @jaxxon33:

No need with the 2Gb right now - but will probably do it at some stage - 2Gb with high speed SSD runs fast enough for what my wife uses it for. The actual access for the ES1-411 is very very simple.

        • @CachePC: how much did it cost you for the ssd?

        • My recommendation (having just purchased a mini PCI-E card just 3 weeks ago) which is as a result of the same frustrations you were experiencing with your WiFi is the $29 Intel 7260 WiFi AC Mini PCI-Express… It works beautifully and took under 5 minutes to install :)

        • @CachePC: And pagefile with an SSD is fast enough.

I rarely go much past 1.5gb of memory even with lots of tabs open, so personally I wouldn't think it cost-effective to worry about upgrading the RAM on this.

        • @CachePC: Very interesting. I got one from JB a few weeks ago and upped to 8GB RAM. Still the original HDD though. Assumed RAM would be the priority :)

  • Dang these are cheap

This $199 Notebook will go well with my $199 Netbook.

This $199 Notebook will go well with my $499 tablet.

        and my $1,000 iphone
        and my $10,000 gold iwatch

        • and the $99,000 iCar in 2017…

        • +5

How did you manage to get it for $10,000? You should post it as a deal.

I just got my laptop from the JB Hifi deal. It was slow out of box but I ran DECRAP program and it's much faster. I haven't upgraded the ram or HDD yet. Waiting for a deal on those components. Overall it's a nice laptop and well worth the price. The only real issue I have with it is the touchpad - feels loose at bottom two corners when tapping to touch or even clicking down.

  • +1

Acer ES1-411-C1WD is $299 at the moment in JBHIFI after cash back will be $260 with Clelron N2940

Celeron N2940 has more than 45% better 3DMark06 CPU score than N2840 (2,191 vs 1,510)
Celeron N2940 has more than 80% better Passmark score than N2840 score (1,830 vs 1,003 - test clearly favoured more core)

    • Sp are you saying its worth spending the extra $60 on the jbhifi one? Or do think the saving would be better spent on ram and sdd upgrade?

      • +1

Both laptops will benefit a lot from an SSD. An SSD should be required for both of them in any case.

        • +1

probably not worth $60 more plus $20 voucher. If prïce was the same buy the quad core. Spend the $60 on ram or ssd.

      • +1

I'd personally spend the extra and get the N2940 version. I'm using this computer in stock configuration with that processor now and I wouldn't go any lower in processing power.

        • N2940 is still quite slow though. It is neck and neck with a processor you would find in a smartphone. They are basically rebranded Atom processors. SSD is a must otherwise you would wait ages to load a simple Word document.

        • +3

Definitely spend the extra getting the Quad core - would not consider the dual core for specs. I brought the Quad for my wife to replace aging T7200 and it flies BUT only with SSD added.

A cheap SSD would make this sing. Boot times in Windows 8.1 is about 15 seconds vs about 90 secs. I have done about 9 laptop upgrades to SSDs including a few Macs, and after 25 years in IT, SSDs are the single biggest advancement in the last 5 years. Intel has been power focused for last few iterations - my laptop is a Asus Intel 2630 and its benchmarks are compariable to the latest i7 CPUs (helps it is a true quad core with hyperthreading).

        • @motor89:
i have an atom in my asus 11.5 inch vivotab and the n2940 is much faster and i haven't upgraded it yet.

        • +1

@CachePC: i cannot agree more for QUAD Core and SSD, just a question of replace the HDD to SSD, how do you move the Windows 8.1 to SSD?

        • @paulaus: N2940 is based on new atom architecture "Bay Trail". The cpu in your vivotab is probably Z2760 which is based on old atom architecture and at least 2 years old now. Of course, N294 would be faster slightly, but still not enough for most everyday computing.

My points still stand - N2940 is basically rebranded Atom processor and it is still quite slow to load most programs on Windows 8.1.

        • +2

@violentpanda: When you buy SSD, for instance Samsung, it comes with a software which allows you to transfer all your data including OS. As far as I know, only Samsung and Intel SSD come with such software. However there are some 3rd party software you can download on the internet.

        • +1

@motor89: if WIN8,1 was transferred to SSD successfully, it would be alright to upgrade to win 10 in near future?

        • @CachePC: which cheap SSD?

        • +3

          @violentpanda:

          I used Macrium Reflect:
          1. Download and install
          2. Put the SSD in a USB caddy
          3. Using Windows 8.1 Disk Management resize tool to resize partitions so they are not larger than the total size of the SSD
          4. Run Reflect - select the hard disk as the source, Click Clone Disk, select the destination as the SSD in the USB - it tells you what the drives are by model (for instance, if your SSD is a Samsung 850 EVO), then just click Finish
          5. Wait about until Reflect does it thing, and Click OK
          6. Power off machine AND take out the battery
          7. Replace hard disk with the SSD (use that video reference site You know ;-) on how this is done
          8. Enjoy

          @Jack42:

I generally look at Transcend given the 3 yr warranty and price from MSY is pretty good. I generally buy Crucial, Sandisk, or 850 EVOs (as they have 5 year warranty) is my preferred. I've been buying EVOs out of Amazon recently when they get go on special - closest I've seen the 250Gb ones was Shopping Expresses with their $10 signup - I got one then too for $143.80 delivered. Amazon have been around $138.xx delivered.

        • @violentpanda:

Yes, not a problem - the OS will be upgraded. Infact, I will be doing just that :-)

        • @CachePC:

          Its a great program, +1.

        • @CachePC: How was buying the SSDs from Amazon?
Do you know how the warranty works? I've heard about many 850's failing and bricking.
          Shipping time?
Amazon's the cheapest and I really don't want to pay $18 more for local stock but I'm concerned with the warranty.

      • Just had an idea on walk back from bathroom.

Is the quadcore version still selling at jbs?

I might purchase one on my 28 degrees card and claim the difference (with price protection) when they next have their 15% off computer sale?

Any flaws in my plan (except for no stock at time of sale or no jbs sale in next 6 months)?

    • cant find it on their site only Acer ES1-311-C9XM

      • +1

i saw one in jbhf world square branch last sunday

        • with the same deal? getting it to $200?

        • +1

          @Jack42:

I went to world square this morning to get one, they had it on display but no stock.
They told me that the one in the galleries had stock, so i went over there and got one.
          It was $299.

        • @kingdoofus:

Yep. I saw it marked at $299 at strand arcade store also. Is the normal price (obviously not taking account of cashback offer)? So when next 15% off sale comes it goes down to $254?

        • @andyman1908:
Yeah, you might be able to get it cheaper later on. I just wasn't sure if they would still have stock left and/or have another sale on before the cash back offer ends on 31 July. At $260 its still an OK deal for me.

        • @kingdoofus:

Cool.i might take the plunge and hope for a sale and price protection claim. Only thing is i dont see the product advertised on their website? Could make it hard to prove of lower price. Anyway i think ill pull trigger today

        • @kingdoofus: okay cool thanks.

  • Windows alone cost about $150. So laptop cost $50? Wow.

    • The licence is tied to the machine.. let's see you move that licence to another machine..

    • Mfrs get huge discounts on Windows licenses in volume.

Windows 8.1 Bing (manufacturer pays 0 AFAIK)

    • Windows 8.1 with Bing is being discontinued. However you might find older stock.

    • Correct, zero cost to the manufacturer. I think its meant to allow Microsoft to compete against low cost devices like Chromebooks. Getting Windows for free means that they can sell sub-$300 laptops and still make money.

  • +2

Great deal for a basic laptop.

A word about Windows 8.1 Bing (which this laptop ships with). It's basically standard Windows 8.1, but with Bing set as the default search engine in IE (whereas on non-Bing versions of Windows 8.1, the OEM can change the default search provider if they want).

And the great news…according to this link Windows 8.1 Bing will get the free upgrade to Windows 10 Home

  • Only in theory:
If WW sell TGG gift vouchers, and TGG accepts multiple gift vouchers, purchase 240 dollars worth of them, pay in 8x 30 dollar AMEX transactions (8 different cards) at the check out that will cost after the AMEX credits 160AUD, then get 39AUD cashback AND 20AUD TGG voucher for future use, so just 101AUD actual cost. So tempting.

    • i barely understand this

      • +2

        WW=Woolworths
        TGG=The Good Guys

There's an AMEX cashback offer on Woolworths spend.

Ah forget it, not worth explaining.

        • thanks for trying, some people are ungrateful. don't see what was so hard to understand, it was clear what you were saying

  • Can anyone advice me what kind of memory (ebay or shop if possible) to purchase 4 or 8 Gb to improve speed. 2Gb is really low, even for internet browsing…
I don't want to buy something is not compatible.. Thanks

    • +2

It is around $35 to $40 on the internet.
      http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=4GB+DDR3&sp…

I would say it is just not worth it and you would be better waiting for a laptop that has 4GB Memory.

    • +1

people saying SSD is more important.

    • +1

you can upgrade to 8gb RAM max..but make sure it is 1.35 low voltage RAM

    • +1

I would just replace the Hdd with an SSD.

This will give the greatest performance boost, and will make any paging done to the drive reasonbly quick too.

Manage what programs are running and you'll have a decent machine.

  • Need just for web browsing and watching online videos such as youtube. Any expert opinion if it will work well for just these tasks? Will it play HD videos smoothly?

    • i dont know, but im getting it anyway, will report back.

    • I'd say up to 1080p should be ok, 4k might be pushing it though

      • +2

There is enough CPU in there to do 1080p - The integrated GPU supports the correct framerate - wasn't always the case with Intel integrated. I use the Quad core but same integrated GPU with Kodi (XMBC) and it doesn't miss a beat - mind you, so does my Raspberry Pi 2.

  • +2

So if I wanna buy 10 of these and to maximise deal, I should get them one by one right? Sorry my math is pretty bad. Can the smart ones pls confirm this with me? thx

    • +2

      Broden, is that you?

    • If my calculations are correct, then yes, 10 x $20 store credits is more than 1 x $50 store credit…

      • reminds me of dodgeball the movie… hahaha

We need to raise $50,000 dollars…
Why don't we just pay it in Canadian dollars. OK fine, just, if that's a route your interested in traveling down, it's $50,000 American, it'd be $70,000 roughly Canadian. How are we gonna get $120,000.

        LOLL

      • Only 5 Acer cash backs per person

        • how would they know if i pretend to be someone else

  • oh and btw I read the store credit deal finishes on 5th June so better get in fast

  • This laptop would run linux nicely. I've been using Elementary OS on my main laptop and no real issues.

    • One problem for me while using Elementary os is the software center is so slow at installing & uninstalling things… Glad I'm not installing many things on it. (Apt-get works fine though)

      • Odd. I don't have this issue. I use apt-get too most of the time anyway but when I use the software centre it's not that slow for me for installing. Don't know about uninstalling

    • My 9 year old Inspiron 640m with ssd runs Linux nicely

  • Both Acer laptops, different models, one's 13 inches, ones 14 inches. Ones 3830T, ones ESI-411
Does anyone know whether acer laptops can share the same batteries? Swap them?
    Many thanks.

Celeron with non-ssd drive, gee this is 5+ years old.

May as well get a cheap andriod tablet for that price and prob do more with it/more convient

    • +1

oh no, you simply can't do more with Android and iOS… they're mainly for entertainment, at least for now.

  • +6

Lol I love the discussion that comes with posting these laptop deals, so much to learn :)

  • +2

I wonder how many of these are snapped up by the jilted HP Slatebook crowd. This Acer could become the ultimate "rebound" laptop for those seeking refuge from the hurt and pain of the traumatic HP experience.

    • +2

I keep hearing about this HP Slatebook farce, but a search returns nothing. Anyone have a link? Very curious.

    • +1

I'd snap one up if only I didn't already have the quad core version. Good laptop for the price.

  • I was gonna buy one of these to replace my 5 year old Celeron Laptop until I found out that the N2840 CPU is slower!! O_o

    • But probably a helluva lot more power efficient meaning you'd get more battery life.

      • True but majority of the time my laptop is using external power.
Oh well guess I just have to wait for a cheap i3 or something…

  • Motorola Moto G 2ND Gen $229 + $20 Store Credit On Pick Up is there a code says $268 in link. And Vivitar Avengers Or Frozen Camelio Tablet 4.3" $34 now $69 maybe over.

  • Sooo undecided whether i should buy this or quad core version at jbhifi. Currently jbs selling for $299 before cashback and this is $238 before cashback. Anyone installed an ssd into this dual core version? I just want to know it wil be a frustrating experience scrolling between screens, using office, watching movies if i get the dual core here.
