  • Thanks OP, ordered x1
Ozbargain is going to get me divorced…!

  • finally caved, hoping its a useful device

  • This review sealed it for me.

Is it strange that I feel like ordering another?

  • Ordered one but am not sure what to actually do regarding the OS.

On one hand there's the possibility of root and app2sd with 4.3. Does root make it easier to change the rom if there's development?

On the other 4.4 should be faster and newer (from reading, the lag people experienced was from not doing a factory reset after upgrade) and don't have the function bar constantly at the bottom of the screen.

    Thoughts?

    • Remote desktop for me will be my primary use.

      • I don't mean the uses, after all it would be the same on either 4.3 or 4.4 since the apps remain the same.

I mean which is the better OS to use. Factory shipped 4.3 or updated 4.4.

        • I will be going to 4.4 as I want to use MS Office and I think overall the experience will be better. Apart from SD/USB drive access.

  • Bought one. Thanks op.

  • +2

Is it worth starting a thread for this on Whirlpool/XDA? Seems as though a few are buying this. Has to be one nerd amongst us that can hack the device on 4.4.2 given it can't be roooooooted after updating OS.

  • It looks like the deal has run out - HP's site is just taking me around in circles.

    • +1

      Is this the same one?

      • Yep - TY - was just coming back in to say I had found it by googling and going in that way - the ozbargain link landed me on a page where there was a minimum price set [~ $400] that I couldn't change :-/

My estimated arrival from the track-site in the e-mail is tomorrow. Either that's a default when it has only just gone in, or they are rewarding persistence and it's last in, first out :-P

        • Default…i got that too but now it is in processing mode, no dates, no debit of credit card…maybe I've lucked out.

Did this Friday night as well…HP maybe cherry picking…

        • @thehulk1969: Fingers crossed - with "Linux Deploy" this will be a full-function machine, without with VLC, a brilliant portable media player.

        • @terrys: which distro works with ARM btw? Also Linux deploy needs root, no? So far, there hasn't been a lot of luck with rooting.

        • @kimae: Pretty much where Slackware was in the early 90's it seems. Here's a list of what are and are not working in the Debian ARM64 port:
          https://wiki.debian.org/Arm64Port#Official_Debian_port.

It's not quite as much work as Berkley posting out overnight paper tapes and the recipients running their compilers for their own architecture, but it sure looks like we could get a dim distant feel for it.

      • That link is gone now too.

        • Looks like it's finally expired.

  • +1

As terrys mentioned above, Looks like deal is finished… link pointing to another machine…

    Hold on… still alive

    • Yep bk07's link points in. Fingers crossed that we don't get a "sorry, all gone" e-mail tomorrow.

  • Just got a call from Katrina from HP saying ran out of stock and they cancelled my order and they will refund in 10 to 14 working days. Orders last Friday night

    • Nooooooooooooooo. if they do that to me I'm going to turn green.

    • Thought so…i reckon I'll get the gong as well… win some, lose some…

    • +1

The deal is still live you may as well try and order again. Unless they pull the deal…you got nothing to lose except another call from the lovely Katrina…

    • I'll be a bit peeved - I'd expect them to query the funds, then take the money on shipment.

      • Might put my legal hat on and claim a valid contract of sale has passed…and push and push and push…or request an equivalent…!

        • Not yours yet:-p
" Title to hardware products passes to you upon the later of full payment and delivery of the products. Risk of loss and damage pass to you upon delivery"

          and:
HP has the right to cancel any accepted order prior to delivery in the event of any pricing error (as referred to above) or any material error outside of HPs control in connection with your order or other conditions published in the HP Store relevant for your order, or if any further verification of your credit conditions or records so warrants. If you have already made payment and your order is cancelled, HP will issue a refund or credit to your account.

It's be intersting to see what they thought an "equivalent" to this was tho - certainly not the 1 GHz Slate tablet lol.

        • @terrys:

I cannot believe a company of this size cannot control their stock levels to the minute, especially online…crazy…pull it off the web if it's gone…

        • @thehulk1969: Me too - they have just moved to a new site I believe, but even so, they have been around for a little while.
Maybe they should get a Dell server…

    • I've just placed an order (after 5.30pm AEST) using the link provided by bk07. It all seemed to process and it claims that the delivery date is tomorrow, though I suspect that this might be the default for new orders. (Odd default to choose mind you; surely it would make sense to have a long delivery time by default so that an update could provide a shorter time rather than the reverse!) I'm fully aware the order might get cancelled but will see what happens.

Welcome to the " I gave HP a two week interest-free loan at EOFY Club" :-) We may all be in with a chance at the prize.

        • +2

I prefer to see it as $169 that I can't spend on unnecessary Ozbargain "deals" for the next two weeks. :-)

      • +1

@hajonez, I believe you are quite lucky to make the order because as of now, HP seems to have taken down the offer and I placed an order on 24th May, hence same as you, keep fingers cross that all goes well…

    • @aussie28
      Wow you ordered Friday?
So assuming they go in order, that means the entire weekend of people ordering here and Whirlpool will be getting a call?
      Wow.

      • I was 5:41pm on Friday….fingers crossed I may still be ok. I was really looking forward to it!

        • 1st order email confirmation received at 4:30pm and 2nd order made at 3:24am Sat morning, so far according to the tracking the 1st order was cancelled. 2nd order showing as delivery on the 18th of June still. Go figure… when i said I would make a complaint to consumer affairs because she was telling me 10-14 working days for a refund she said she would escalate it, Then I got this email.

          Hi James,

It was nice talking to you a while ago.

With regard to your refund, as we are trying to expedite the return of the funds back to your account, our finance team has advised us that the fastest way will be either thru Bank Account Transfer or Physical Check. Will you accept either of these payment modes?

We will wait for your kind advise. Our apologies for any inconvenience caused.

        • @aussie28:
Right, so your first order was the one she called about and cancelled.
Was the second order discussed at all? Its still showing as active right? I would like to understand what they are up to and if they are cancelling sequentially.

(wow she spelled "advice" wrongly - makes HP look a bit der)

        • @King Tightarse: Yes 1st order she called about and cancelled. Nothing said about having 2 orders.

        • @aussie28:
          Well fingers crossed for you.
If they are on fact doing them in order, they are mighty slow. You are the only one I have heard of so far but their reason was "ran out of stock". Guess we will soon see.

        • Yes, I'm rather hoping (for all of our sakes) that one of your orders was cancelled because they noticed you had two. It seems rather unlikely but I'd much prefer that eventuality than the thought that they are sequentially working through the orders and cancelling them all. Has anyone else had their order cancelled yet? Let us know so we can try to work out exactly what's going on here.

  • I got a feeling it's probably either

    1. HP don't have the stock to fulfil orders and made an error when listing it as available / too slow to take down the product page

    2. HP saw all these orders with the coupon which they are cancelling to favour those that ordered at full price

    • Yes, I also wondered whether the coupon use was a factor in this. Having said that, I can't imagine any of us here didn't use the coupon so the number of orders placed without the coupon would surely be pretty small. Even those on the WP forums had a direct link to the coupon at the top of the thread so presumably ordered with the coupon applied. It will be interesting to see whether we can work out any sort of pattern. So far we have the following info:

      (1) A single Friday evening order cancelled.
      (2) The cancelled order was one of two placed for the same item.
      (3) Presumably the cancelled order had the code applied.

  • +1

Interesting. According to the HP store page it is still in stock @ $379. Once you click on the "view full specs" link, it brings you to the product page where it is listed at $199.

    http://h20386.www2.hp.com/AustraliaStore/images/auhpshop/ols…

    • That is interesting indeed. Wonder what HP are playing at.

      • +3

I know what's going on… It's there new stock control system based on new standards… You see, companies either use FIFO (First in First Out) or LIFO (Last in First Out) in order to account for stock. HP are using the new GKFI system. (Got Know F%@#ing Idea)… May explain why HPs sales were down 7% for the quarter year on year…

        • They're in the process of splitting off the PC division from the enterprise side. At least we don't have to worry about them mis-using our personal data - they own EDS anyway [g,d,r.]

    • The strangest part is, it still works with the e-coupon code but it mentions that the shipment date has been pushed to 22 June 2015. Hence they are making this rather confusing…

  • my order placed on last friday had an estimated delivery date on the 16th of June. such a longgggg wait

    • Mine's the 18th of June. I don't mind as long as they follow through and don't cancel it

  • I ordered mine on the 9th and I just got a call from HP. The product is discontinued, they're out of stock and I will be refunded.

    • The 9th? This deal was posted on the 22nd!

      • And was mentioned in this deal on the 8th. This sale has been going on for a lot longer than that too.

        • Right! So looks like everyone's going to get the call.

        • +3

@King Tightarse: Yep unfortunately. I even looked at getting it directly from Ingram Micro and their price is nowhere near as good.

I guess we won't be seeing a sea of yellow slatebooks at the regus business lounges.

    • Damn. I was really looking forward to this laptop

      • Yep me too. If they released a Windows laptop with the exact same design I'd buy it in a second.

  • ordered this 2 weeks ago, also got the email about cancellation today…

  • +1

I hate HP. Why did they advertise an item as available when it isn't. If they were low on stock they should have put an order limiter on the system so that new orders can't be placed after stock has run out. It's basically standard for most other shopping sites

  • well, got a call for refund and stated that refund will take 10-14 days…..
    ordered 2 weeks ago.

I think that's the SCAM HP took to earn interest money from consumers.

1 month of free money for them to spend without interest.

    • Except they wouldn't spend the money because they'd have to refund it.

I wonder if anybody got this laptop in the last two deals?

      • +1

edgar was talking about the interest on it - tho I'm not sure it would quite account for the time of the staff having to make the phone calls, given that they've dropped ~39000 people over the last year….

  • My arrival date was set to 25th May but of course I haven't received it yet.

Have not received email or call about my order. Credit card hasn't been charged.

    Not looking good I guess.

  • Yep looks like our orders are all getting cancelled. What a waste of time. I was looking forward to using this as a travel laptop on flights.

Edit: Any one have any suggestions for similar laptops with long battery life, light weight, thin, about 13-14" in screen size and cheap?

  • I ordered on the 11th, just received an email said it it cancelled.

" We regret to inform you that the HP SlateBook 14-p001tu PC that you ordered is no longer available and we are going to offer you a refund instead.
Once you approved we will proceed with the refund of your recent purchase. Please note that the refund process may take up to 10 - 14 business days to complete and for the payment to reflect in your account.
We deeply regret any inconvenience caused and appreciate your patience and understanding.
Should you have any other enquiry, please feel free to reply to this email or contact us contact us on 13 23 47 (Option 2). Our customer service specialists will be pleased to assist you."

    What a rubbish statement.

    • +1

Yeah absolutely rubbish. Poor form HP.

    • What happens if you don't approve the refund do they just keep the funds indefinitely?

      • +1

Then I would think that it is us who should be nervous. They are happy anyway if the money is kept with them.

  • +1

I just had chat with HP customer care regarding $1 extra charged from my CC and they mentioned about the refunds. I told them they have deducted the money from my card, the product is still available on their website for $379, give me reason why I should not report to ACCC. The CSR then said that she will talk to Sales manager about it.
I am surprised that company like HP could not keep track of their orders and are taking 14 days to refund the money that they took in 2 hours.
Will it be any benefit reporting to ACCC? We might not get anything this time but it may help us for repeated mistakes like this.

    • No benefit. You'd be reporting the US store to the ACCC… It's not for sale on the HP Australia store anymore.

      • +1

should file a complaint to ACCC regarding bait advertising.

        • Should go report target.com because their stuff isn't on target.com.au. The Slatebook that akd saw was listed on the American store that ships only to America. It's not based in Australia and doesn't even have an ABN….. because it's American. Good luck trying to report that to the ACCC.

And was listed out of stock on the AU store, but would take orders for production.

        • @Clear: I had screenshot as PDF, it is Au store and it is still on sale for $379. But Hp cancelled my order ($169.15). Tell me why? Meanwhile, the refund payment take 10-15 business days. I am not banker, no free finance for HP.

  • +1

Worth noting that it was actually listed Out of Stock. The orange circle and "Available in 1-3 weeks" means that they don't have stock, but they're either going to get more from another source or manufacture more. Unfortunately they don't make that obvious.

    • I recall seeing a green circle on my order page and it saying will ship within 1 to 3 weeks. Unfortunately I didn't take a screen shot.

      • Cached page is your friend here.

    • Under your my order page on the website they make it out as if the order gets sent to production once the order was procesed.

      1Processing› 2Production› 3Shipping› 4Estimated delivery
      due 11.06.2015
      due 17.06.2015

      • Yep, I spoke to my manager about it. That means that the order has been sent to production, but with it being discontinued and no longer manufactured… it can't be produced.

        • Wonder when they discontinued the laptop?

        • @djevoultion: I wouldn't be surprised if it was last year. They removed the manual downloads from their site sometime ago. This EOFY sale is to clear old stock anyway.

  • Weird also that there website has a big banner at the top of the website saying IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT CONSUMER RIGHTS

    • I am guessing that this is because they have already infringed and have been asked to do so. Why else would they do this except for compliance? This is a good sign, as it means that any further infringements could have higher penalties

  • +1

What gets me is why they would place a 10', then this 14', of the same obviously discontinued line of laptop on their website for sale. They must know.

You would get incompetence flourishing where there is low transparency though. Browse on Amazon today, shows quote "Only 8 left in stock."
An informed purchasing decision ? What a novel approach.

  • +1

Just had my order cancelled. bugger.

I was really looking forward to this product It's a nice looking device and would go great in the living room of my place. Apparently all orders after the 21st are being cancelled.

Seems really suss to me. If we see this back on the site in 2 months time I will be really pissed.

    • Did HP rep tell you over the phone that all orders after the 21st are being cancelled or is that your own observation?

      • Over the phone..

        • +1

I think few comments up there was someone that ordered on the 9th May and his order got cancelled so I think that was just fluff from HP

  • Oh damn it… was so looking forward to it. They've charged my card already… sigh…. too bad they didnt accept Paypal else i would have file a claim to get my money back asap… this is BS that we have to wait for up to 2 weeks to get our money back!

    • What's more BS is the fact when I was on phone the website still said there was limited stock available.

  • Mine has been cancelled too. "Insufficient stock" which I think is bull.

    Dissapointed

  • +1

i'm expecting mine to be cancelled as well. I just ordered the asus x205 from another deal.

  • +5

So based upon the last few comments it appears this deal might be a dud due to HP incompetence. I still haven't heard my buy is dead, if it happens to come through I'll post on here to let people know. It'd be great if others could too.

    • Hmmm - my order has just been updated, still in "admin" but now has been a delivery date of 17th Jun. The order is for "HP SlateBook 14-p001TU PC AUST" but as the Ozbargain link didn't work, I'd searched for it in Google, and appear to be on the U.S.site for tracking. [h20497.www2.hp.com].

It is still up on the U.S. site :

      http://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/slatebook/overview.html

      Now listed as US$429.99.

That was the site that accepted my order [and code] and debited my card the A$169, with free shipping.

      • 430? HP trying to make a quick penny.

        • It was sitting around $499 when released I thin k - but it does make the " we are out of stock" calls look a bit sus :-/ If mine turns up, I'll have to paint the base just in case I go near a Regus lounge.
