If you are an AMEX holder… I would buy something else like a Chromecast ($43) or anything around that price to nudge you over the $300 minimum spend offer by AMEX. (ASUS X205 + Chromecast = $231) Plus you could easily sell the chromecast for $30 bucks if you already have one

  • What is the actual processor model?

    • +2

      I believe it's the Intel Atom Z3735F

    • +1

The X205TA's specs don't look like much on paper, but in the real world, its 1.33-GHz Intel Atom Z3735 quad-core CPU, 2GB of RAM and 32GB of flash storag - See more at: http://www.laptopmag.com/reviews/laptops/asus-eeebook-x205ta…

Has HDMI, doesn't have USB3. The long battery life is about it's main claim to fame. No free Office with this so you can't factor in any further cashback!
Whoa! - It does come with office - but the Asus cashback site doesn't work well with my browsers - if this cashback is from ASUS, then there will be the further Microsoft one. Then again, I'd expect hardly's to put that on the list too - they are good at making manufacturer's offers look like their own sweet hearts:-/

      • +1

It saids comes with a years subscription to Microsoft 365. Yeah no USB 3.0 sucks but I guess with the minimal storage it's not like you will transferring a lot of stuff anyway.

        • +1

With the minimal storage, mounting a USB3 drive as a directory would give you an increase in storage available @ 70 MB/s. That is one advantage of Microsoft imitating the good from the *nix world. It's the same stunt you can pull with fast SD cards on 8.1 tablets, unfortunately not available to Android > 4.3 users :-(

  • z3735f ….great for tablet..abit pushing it for netbook

    • +1

What's the difference? You're just ditching the touch screen for keyboard/mouse.

      • +5

        What's the difference?

        It's the vibe…

      • Swiping a keyboard either breaks a nail, or leaves you looking like a frustrated Elton John.

    • +1

We had worse CPUs for netbooks. Atom CPUs were used for netbooks, the current gen is faster than the older ones, so I don't understand why it is pushing for netbooks?

  • +2

I've found these newer generation Atoms to be very capable. No you won't be doing much gaming (though people do run WoW and some pixel-art style games on these without many problems) but it's more than powerful enough for day-to-day use. These are not the shit Atoms from 2009-2011 netbooks that couldn't have more than one tab open at the same time.

    • -1

      M.A.M.E!!!!!!

    • +1

I know but they're still the slowest modern processors you can get being manufactured today from Intel's entire lineup (for windows). Even slower than a celeron. (not saying celeron has the same battery life)

      • +1

        They are also the cheapest.

    • +1

though people do run WoW on these without many problems

Wow, I bought my girlfriend a $450 Dell laptop with better specs (don't have them with me). WoW runs at 15-20FPS on the lowest of lowest settings.

      • +1

I think the resolution is what gets you with this. Windows tablets with this processor can run WoW decent at low'ish settings because they're usually 1280x800. This laptop in particular at 1366x768 is just a few more pixels than that overall. If the $450 laptop has a much higher resolution then that's probably what's killing it. I think eMMC storage also reads a bit faster than traditional hard drives (assuming a cheaper Dell has a spindle and not a SSD) which may make a difference as well.

        • I think the resolution is what gets you with this.

As a gamer and computer builder for 10 years, I completely forgot to check the resolution… wow…

  • +2

I still haven't pulled the trigger on this.. I am looking for a small travel laptop with 11 hrs+ quoted battery life about $300. Will mostly be used for web browsing, watching movies etc. I've be looking at the ASUS T100 and Acer Iconia W510. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

    • On the other hand I think you resolved my issue. Got Amex as well and with end of financial year approaching, this should cover my home working needs. thanks

      • +1

It'd be good to know if the cashback is an ASUS offer - their site isn't listing any models, so one needs a receipt to check. If it does, then there is also the Microsoft Office cashback offer…

        • Hmm yeah I suspect the HN cashback could be the microsoft office cashback. But haven't confirmed this yet.

    • We ended up going with an ASUS T100. They seem pretty good value from Amazon at the moment: http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-Transformer-Detachable-Touch-Lapt…

      • I had a TF201 Transformer and it was a terrible experience, mostly related to the forgotten Android update for then almost-latest model (although I know the T100 is Windows). The service was terrible as well. The screen attachment didn't work very well (would gather a lot of dust), the screen itself was not very well fitted (same for a colleague's similar model) and, eventually it died, kaput, no google could help me to bring it back. I am even considering becoming a OzBargain sinner and add HNs the extra warranty, as my last ASUS experience was terrible.

      • Yes they do seem like good prices.. Thanks. What is the realistic battery life you get out of it if you were doing some web browsing and watched a couple movies?

        • On my TF201, when docked the battery life was excellent, certainly beyond the 6h mark. But I will probably buy the X205TA as its substitute, as I need it for work and I don't need a tablet.

        • Only just ordered ours a few days ago so no battery life stats yet. Reviews seem promising though.

    • +1

I have had a w510 for about a year with keyboard dock. The screen has become a bit wobbly in the dock so sometimes it makes the dock/unlock tone. Also the power unit just died so they are sending me a new one. Doesn't support multitouch on the touch pad. Apart from these few things it's very capable, and for day to day stuff is great, but but it hardly leaves the dock and gets used as tablet since the RT apps are shite.

Someone on eBay was flogging refurb in as new condition for 180 on eBay with keyboard which is a steal, and nearly bought on just for the charger (cheapest on eBay is 50 bucks, figured with a 15hr battery life I could probably share a charger with someone in my family

    Thanks OP - bought one.
Got the $25 discount thru the HN Newsletter signup, added a micro SD card to bump it over $300 and paid with my Amex card to get the $50 statement rebate.
Hopefully will get the MS Office 365 $25 rebate when activated.

    • +1

$25 discount newsletter. Can you please tell me how?
EDIT: found it on description, thanks!

    • +1

Great to hear. Please post back and let us know if you get the office cashback!

      • Thanks dude, just bought it. Finish work late today so unfortunately can only pick it up tomorrow morning.
It is going to work out for $228 after Chromecast sale - This is awesome.

Still to claim CASHBACK from Asus. Has anyone got the link or something?

        • +2

No worries :) When you pick it up ask if the cashback is through ASUS or Microsoft. If it's through asus you can claim 2 lot's of $25 cashbacks.

        • +1

@jdogg: Appears to be from MS, view this by clicking "Terms and Conditions" under the description:

Thank you. I really have no idea about modern computers. I use a new MacBook retina, but my six year old needs something for school work (i can't let him use my computer as I am selfish).

Would anyone be able to advise if this model would be significantly better?
        http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HP-Pavilion-11-6-x360-W8-1-Conver…

        • +1

Performance wise not a big difference. It does have 4GB of ram which would be better for more than six or so tabs open in browser and multitasking. Battery life will be considerably less than the Asus, but the HP is build more rugged and versatile with the 360 degree hinge, alas heavier.

        • +1

@ozhunter68: Thank you for the information! :)

        • +1

          @ozhunter68:
I ended up going with the ASUS one as it was basically half the price and lighter - and it is only for a six year old. Thanks again.

        • +1

          @luztra:
Good choice. some people get carried away with marginal performance differences for a lot more money. From all the reviews, there are pros and cons anyway for both, just need to decide what suits your use ( six year old's ) better. One bit of advice for anyone using these is to get used to gently and evenly ( in middle, or with two hands ) closing and opening the lid/screen. As these light portables are made lighter and thinner, this is a part that needs to be handled with care. Enjoy

  • Do you guys think that it can handle Starcraft 2?

  • ordered 1. thanks op

  • Thanks ordered one :) Great price!

  • Guys, what type of charger it uses? It is micro USB type or normal bulky laptop chargers.

    • +1

      doubt its usb

    • +3

The video reviews indicate its a propriety port, however the charger is the size of a tablet/phone charger - smaller and lighter than a typical laptop charger.

    • +1

Not USB, but smaller and lighter ( half of 15" ) than average.

    • +1

      There's a review photo available at http://cdn.liliputing.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/power_03.jpg

Yep, like others have said the charger is similar in size and appearance to micro USB but not the same/compatible, just as well because it supplies 19 volts according to what's written on it.

    • Thank you all.

  • Just need this for school. I really just need it to use word and access the internet

Will there be much room on it once office is installed though?

    • +1

Shpping square have 64GB microsd cards for $33. Problem solved.

  • +2

I bought this last saturday from HN with the $25 voucher and $50 amex credit, but never read anything about $25 cashback till now. Thanks OP!

    • +1

Thoughts on it? Is the lack of storage an issue?

      • +1

I really like it. I bought it as a small laptop for travelling - the long battery life (11-12 hrs) and "lightweight-edness" (< 1kg) is a major positive. Lack of storage is not an issue for me. I bought a 64GB microSD card for it so have chucked that in, but also have an external 2.5" HDD for transferring videos from gopro to HDD, and also store movies and tv etc on the external HDD to watch on planes and such.

I'm still getting used to the whole windows 8.1 thing but I am very happy with my purchase, especially considering i basically got this and a logitech x100 bluetooth speaker for $200 after all the cashback offers and TRS.

I would recommend a bluetooth mouse to go with it though, not a big fan of trackpads - i bought the toshiba B35 in the recent dick smith sale for $15 and its great.

  • +4

    This is too easy:
1- Bump the order to $325,
2- Use the $25 subscription voucher to bring it down to $300,
    3- $50 cashback from AMEX,
4- $25 cashback from Microsoft for Office,
    5- $25 cashback from ASUS,
6- $27.27 GST back through TRS, assuming the invoice is for 300, (going overseas in July)

for an effective cost of $172.73

All what's needed is a 37 dollar item to add to the cart…

    • +1

Internet searched but couldn't confirm/find any ASUS cashback.

      • Thanks, my bad.
I added the Sennheiser HD201 for 34 dollars, still need another 3.

    • +2

Yeah as mentioned earlier there is no ASUS cashback. The cashback is for the office 365. Still brings it in under $200 though :) I like step 6 though… I'm also going overseas in July so will keep that in mind, thanks.

  • +3

Intel Atom Z3735's passmark is 907. Not that bad. Equal to the middle Core 2 Duo's of the mid-late 2000s.
Meanwhile the old Atom N270 scored 300.

  • Bought in haste together with this $12 16GB USB flash drive for the $50 statement credit from registering and paying with Amex but then $25 discount from the HN newsletter sign-up brought it down to $275 and I confirmed the purchased already, doh! $300 minimum spend is required for the Amex statement credit so now looking for something else to buy for $25 minimum if the spend is cumulative and not required to be in a single transaction. If so, I guess I have until 05 Jul.

  • Just picked mine up and the store knows nothing about the cashback (surprise surprise!) It comes with a 1 year MS Office license, so I believe that we can use it to get the $25 cashback

    • Is the MS office came in a separate packaging or preinstalled in the laptop?

I have not pick up mine and would like t o know above.

      Thanks

      • +1

neither. The machine only has the Office application & a MS Office product activation sheet with licensing. Once you run the Office app it will ask for the licensing details.

It's funny that my home desktop has a Office 2013 student version which, at the time of installation, I chose to have 1 PC for life instead of 5 PCs for one year.

Anyway, on my new ASUS lappy I logged in with my account and it automatically used my license from my Desktop. I still have to get home to see if it is going to mess with any of the Office installations.

UPDATE: I checked my desktop and Office is working fine… so with one Student license I got my new ASUS laptop + my home desktop running Office apps fine. I will give it 2-3 days more to see if it will eventually clash. If it doesn't, I will sell this spare license.

  • One thing to note: I didn't realize that the RAM memory isn't removable… I was already planning to give it 8GB :(

  • anyone else have trouble turning it on. It has been charging for 2 hours now and still wont start up?

    • The very first time you turn it on it takes several seconds before it registers. After the O/S is installed, it's just a normal press.

  • I can't see how you get the $25 cashback, we have not purchased office it was already with the product

    • The cashback also comes with the pre-installed, the site asks for your purchase receipt for the system.

  • +1

I bought this laptop last Christmas for my son for school and we're very happy with it.
The battery lasted at least 7-8 hrs. when I played a looping video.
But there is also a white one, which a relo bought just last week for $327 and HVN would not budge on the price!
It has a shiny white lid as opposed to matte blue like this one.

    http://www.harveynorman.com.au/asus-x205ta-fd005bs-eeebook.h…

For those comparing this to the HP Stream 11, if you don't specifically want the USB 3 then I would say this is the better of the two.
Brighter and crisper screen and longer battery life.
There are comparisons on youtube, such as this one:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7XlwWP4IKk

  • How long does click and collect generally take? I ordered last night and was hoping to pick up today but nothing yet.

    • I think it depends on the store. Mine was ready to be picked up within an hour.

    • Still waiting for my local store as well. I gave them a call earlier today and they weren't too helpful. Hopefully I'll get an email today saying it is ready for collection,

  • Can anyone help- I've just set up my laptop and when I click on Office to try and activate it I keep getting an error message it has a code and when I click help it goes to a webpage and says Error in determining if office comes with this device

Edit: it was the date and time were wrong

  • The small amount of available storage worries me when installing metro apps as they will consume the space very quick. I think I will look at a Dell DFO 11 3000 2 in 1 for about $370.

Is there much difference in speed do you think between a N2840 4MB machine and this one?

  • First impressions/review: picked mine up 2 days ago and been using it since. Touchpad is quite responsive including two-finger scroll/gestures. I wish it was backlit but the keyboard is good (typing this on it) despite small keys. Performance is really fine for web browsing using Google chrome. IMDB HD trailers play mostly but not completely smooth but I suspect they are poorly/un-optimised and IMDB app would likely offer better playback. YouTube HD plays smoothly and speakers are very good/loud for such a super small light notebook. Small memory and drive (listed as a SanDisk SDW32G) may not be very future proof but the notebook is great value at that price IMO. Available storage is only approx. 19GB with the rest in boot/recovery partition and only 10.5GB free after Windows updates and 2 days of light Internet browsing, emails and watching videos. Uninstalling some bloat/soft-ware may (or not) recover any significant drive space but I have not (yet) looked into it because I don't need/want to store much locally and performance seems good out-of-the-box unlike the N2830 based Acer E3-111-C29F 11.6" notebook on which I swapped HDD for SSD and upgraded RAM to 4GB details available at https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/189913#comment-2680625. I wonder if 32-bit Windows 8 makes for better performance than 64-bit on low-end processors?

    • +1

Did you dump the Acer already?

      You did like it:

"Got the N2830 model of the Acer 11.6" laptop for $287.25 incl. delivery in Sept. 2014 at 20% off eBay sale from TGG on this deal. Very happy with the E3-111-C29F once I upgraded to 4GB RAM and SSD making the performance acceptable. Small, light and fanless so silent. The upgrade makes a big performance difference/improvement and at that price"

      • Nope, still got it. Why do you ask?

        • Just wondered why two 11.6" notebooks.

        • +2

@boxall: The OzBargain effect. They were both bargains IMO and this one is even lighter with even longer battery life. Couldn't help myself but happy with both of them. I don't have many Eneloops :-)

  • Finally got confirmation that my order is ready to pick up at my local store. Excited to be picking it up tomorrow!

Any first impressions of the machine from some one who has already got theirs?

    • +1

There has been lots said already but you only have to look a few posts above here to find what you ask.

    • +1

Picked mine up yesterday and I am very impressed. Very fast and capable machine. Used it for quite a bit, maybe 6 hours and still have 40% left. Excellent value for money!

  • I'm seeing it as $297 after cashback. Also the same with Google cache from 2 days ago. Is this state specific?

    • Looks to me like the original deal is now over. I noticed the price had gone back up last week.

  • Back at $288

  • A note to anyone who purchased this PC;
    - I've noticed that on the palm rests (far bottom left and right from the trackpad) there are small scratches forming from where the lid closes. I've solved this by putting on a PVC laptop protector skin (I put this on the trackpad anyway). Its black and not that noticeable. (here is a link to one - I didn't buy this one, but a similar one on ebay about 12 months ago. You just cut out what you need). http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Black-3D-Carbon-Fibre-Vinyl-Decal…

    • the colors on my laptop were washed out and could be fixed by using the color calibration in windows. however every restart it would revert. The problem is ASUS bloatware Splendid. Go into start and uninstall. Restart. Adjust colors and fixed.

I can't believe how fast and smooth this PC is to use

  • I bought a micro hdmi to hook up to my 42"tv, but the desktop only covers the center of the tv screen won't scale up to cover the whole screen. I played around with graphics settings, etc… But still the same issue.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks

    • Its because it is duplicating your laptop screen and its resolution is smaller than your tvs.

The solution is to extend your desktop on the tv screen. To do this, you can click start and type in display settings. Follow your nose from there or google "How to extend my display to external monitor Windows 8.1".

      Hope this helps
