      • MS Office officially supports Android. Be warned though that, for example, MS Word for android would be better described as MS WordPad for Android. Last I checked, even trivial functionality like Zoom was missing. Kingsoft Office may well be a better choice.

  • Can anyone else checkout? The page just keeps loading and not letting me check out.

    • Nevermind, firefox saves the day.

    • I managed to order two.

  • Does anyone know if it is an IPS screen?

  • Yes,it is a bargain, actually being discussed the previous HP tablet deal.I viewed it as something seemingly useful but you do not really need,so I do not bother.

  • Is it worth it? I have surface RT for browsing, videos Netflix and some games.

Can I connect wired Xbox 360 controller to it? Considering it have same chipset as nvidia shield, it should be good at playing games.

    • The Tegra 4 may be a little dated, but you won't find something with the same hardware for this price. Android has native support for xbox controllers, so you'll be all set, but some games may not be compatible.

      • Technically, the manufacturer can take out (I don't know why, but they can) the support. My tablet cannot use xbox-360 controller because the function has been taken out.

        • +1

Yep, that's very true, but fortunately HP tablets run mostly stock Android with a few extra settings like beats audio, power saving etc. I've seen reviews on both Youtube and Amazon that say wired Xbox 360 controllers are supported.

        • @Clear: That's good to hear, since the laptop does look fairly good for playing games :)

        • @AznMitch: Too bad it's not a hybrid like the slatebook x2. Then it'd be perfect for all games.

        • @Clear: If it was… I probably would've bought one. I couldn't justify buying one when I have both tablet and a laptop. At this price, something like that is very hard to come by.

  • Why hadn't this sold out yet? This is basically a really cheap really good chrome book?!

    • +1

No a chromebook is a different user experience.

      • I acknowledge that. However any of the high percentage of us with Android phones, invested in android apps, that had looked for an excuse to buy a chrome book but waited for Android support has to wait no longer.

I've spent the equivalent of the cost of this thing on beers tonight at a mates bday yet I know I get alot of use out of this! Worst case it sits on the bedroom connected to my free hdmi monitor running Netflix, plex etc with a bit of good play music etc…

      • -7

What's the cheapest chrome book with USB 3? Times by two and you have this thing moron

        • +1

          Hi cureforanitch,
I replied to you to help.
The Slatebook is $169 delivered twice that is $338. I have used both devices and am typing to you right now on an HP 14 inch Chromebook, which incidentally has USB3. The Chromebook cost only $260 from Dick Smith so not twice, nothing like it. I would have been happy to answer any question you had about either device cause like I said, I am familiar with both of them and could give you a good comparative but for reasons unknown, you think I am a "moron"?
          So I guess I wont.

@King Tightarse: Mate, fo my benefit I've been steering clear of a Chromebooks due to a workplace reliance on MS Office, it's just impossible for me not to use Excel. My understanding of Chromebooks are they boot straight into Chrome, all available apps are extensions to Chrome and mostly they expect you to store files on Google Drive.

Having said all that, if I boot into Android with this, and run Chrome, can I 'pretend' for all intents and purposes that I am using a Chromebook? Are there differences that I'm missing out on?

          @Jackson:
          PM-ed you.

          @King Tightarse: Ha, ha wasn't expecting g that :-)

        • +1

          @King Tightarse:
          Hi King Tightatse

          Thanks for you help

Out of interest, and feel free not to reply due to beer induced rudeness, what's better?

You appear to have a unique insight into the chrome book vs this device. I'm sure potential buyers beyond me would be keen for some insight.

    • Its not a Chromebook as such it is running the tablet version of android. The big giveaway is that its running android 4.3, Chromebooks have chrome os and it does not carry the android mobile version prefix.

      • +1

Thanks. For everyone not sure. Not a chrome book

    • +1

Chrome on Android however is very different compared to the actual Chrome browser on Windows, MacOS X, Linux and ChromeOS. Probably the same rendering engine, but

      • No extension
      • No Native Client
      • No developer tools
      • Still the number of Android apps crushed the number of phone extensions. And there's nothing stopping you loading Firefox

  • Had trouble validating my credit card using Chrome. Had to use IE to place the order…

  • +4

God dammit. I just placed an order. Thanks Ozbargain.. Peer pressure.

  • I find I feel much more comfortable browsing web and doing secure stuff over android rather then PC.
Windows does bother me these days.

  • What a deal, but I really don't what's the use of this device

    • +2

Take on flights. Watch Movies. Use emulators and roms to play games. Internet surfing. Connect it to the TV and stream videos. Basically most things your phone can do this can do, just on a bigger scale.

  • Anyone know if this has an accelerometer in it? I'm wondering if I end up playing something that requires tilting something will I be able to do it? Not sure if anyone has thought of this before in this thread but I'd still like the ability to do this if I had to.

    • It does. I've been reading reviews on it and they say it does. What I want to know is whether we can put a custom rom on this laptop. I'd love to flash android 5.0 on it!

      • I wouldn't be expecting a custom rom with the low volumes of these and their initial selling price, and but someone on here was suggesting at least one update, not sure if they quoted their source though.

Always a chance they are flogging these cheap due to HP dumping support, and still smarting from the TouchPad dumping (I got one relatively cheap but shit they are hopeless, I reckon they could have cemented the no. 2 brand ahead of Samsung for a while at least and given people a bit more competition, and we all know how crap duopolies are

        • Yeah I can't find anything on XDA so it looks like there isn't a modding community for this laptop which is a shame. We are at least able to upgrade to android 4.4 KitKat. A few review sites confirmed this.

        • @djevoultion: hmmm…the HP slatebook x2 has the same tegra 4 CPU as slatebook 14, there's 100 pages of discussion on xda, root via towelroot. Seems like it loss root access after update to 4.4.2. I might stick to stock and not update.

  • HP has updated the progress of my order, estimated delivery 25/05/2015. Order was placed yesterday afternoon.

    • Same

      • Now it just changed to ship date of 11th June and expected receive date of the 17th. What date would be on the invoice?

        • My shippping date has also changed to the 11th June

  • Anyone know if there is root available for this device?

I'm hesitant to click buy because I've looked around and there doesn't seem to be much community support (XDA forums) around this device. Thanks in advance :D

    • Do you Ned to root the device as such?

I know there is more access to customize the device but really at the end of the day you only have 4.3 what more can you do?

      • +2

Rooting opens up the possibilities for this device! Run Linux, xposed module, adblock (adaway), remove bloatware, etc.. Why wouldn't you want root access?

        • I understand it opens possibilities but what if there is non?
I though adblock didn't require root access and bloatware these days can be simply uninstalled apart from the splash screen which does.

      • You can update it to Android 4.4… ;)

  • How would this work as a replacement for Nexus 7 2013?
I mainly use it for web browsing (ozbargain).
I really like the idea of the big self-proping screen on the hp. It should work great for watching movies using plex and catch up TV. The Nexus 7 is too small and unstable to use for watching videos except for the occasional (short) YouTube clip.
The laptop design should also make it more durable than a tablet. The Nexus has a fair share of nicks and cracks from numerous drops, still works fine.
Hmm… I don't need it, but very tempting.

  • +1

Discount still going when I woke up, ordered…yay discount

  • Damn ive put in the wrong address. How do i contact HP to amend it? cant find in their Contact Us page. It's just presale and tech support.
    Anyone know?

  • My order just got cancelled..

    • oh what? how come?

      • I purchased it yesterday and woke up to this. No email or anything.
        http://gyazo.com/0f8b6e8a0fd24617cceb412e879064ff

      • Cannot call support for help aswell, as it's only open mon-fri, but made another order.

        • That sucks. I also ordered/purchased yesterday and mine says: Estimated shipping 11.06.2015, delivery due 16.06.2015

        • @samlor:
This is my second order after first cancelled, does yours look like this?
          http://gyazo.com/0a3f0a89534c6933e3524dd7803fdaf9

        • @samlor:
          thanks :)
Hopefully it'll come through this time.

        • @samlor: does your CC get charged once ordered? mine only show the order number, no detail on the righthand side. and no CC charge. ** login to IE seems ok now.

        • Whats the correct number to call?

My CC was charged so i guess my order went through…

        • @callmejon: Yep, my credit card appears to have been charged according to my online bank transactions.

        • @Lionmaru-G:
I found a number to call but its not open on weekends, only mon-fri. My cc was charged aswell and first order got cancelled so gotta call them up for a refund.

        • @callmejon:

It doesn't. On my account I have: PENDING - Hewlett Packard Consum Rhodes , 0522

Edit: I just checked order status page and it says estimated delivery 18.06.2015 :(. Hopefully my order doesn't get cancelled!

        • @djevoultion:
          Same here, mines pending aswell.
Update: My order is now admin (processing) hopefully it works (:

        • @bk07:

Planned ship 11/6 and delivery 16/6 for me.

        • @boxall:
Yep, getting the same now, Delivery:16-Jun-2015, Ship:11-Jun-2015

        • @bk07:

Mine has changed to Admin/Processing. Delivery date is 18.06.2015 and ship date is 11.06.2015

  • +2

For those who have purchased this be sure to check out the Google+ community for this product here - https://plus.google.com/communities/107613355619426807198

Seems like applying the 4.4.2 update will cause major lag issues. Staying on stock 4.3 has WiFi and battery problems. Sorry, but it looks like HP has ended support and are dumping this to clear their inventory. Good luck to all those who bought one.

    • I don't go into Google+, but a window on the page offered this:
      http://www.androidpit.com/turn-your-android-device-into-a-li…

THe article isn't quite correct - it's an emulation, not a full debian, and Audacity doesn't appear to play well with it, but it does open up the play-time possibilities with this unit:-)

      • +1

And that is why someone needs to find a way to root this device. HP has made it hard to root after applying 4.4.2. I've read on the Google+ community that most methods of rooting do not work including towelroot.

  • Bought one, thanks JoeJoe. At that price, I couldn't resist although I have No Idea what I'll do with it - maybe a pressy for mum…
Current estimated delivery date is 26/5.

    • +1

Wow that's only a few days away. Let us know your thoughts once you've received it!

      • Status is now back to "Processing" with no estimated delivery date. :(

        • Mine is on "Admin/Processing" with 18 June 2015 as delivery date, but I don't take their word for it. Another user here had his delivery date to 25 May but got nothing. With the orders being cancelled and no updates/emails from HP, it's looking like they will all be cancelled. It's just a matter of time.

Create a facebook group to discuss things…

    https://www.facebook.com/groups/1586007354999621/

    Enjoy.

    • Google+ is a lot better for this, link here: https://plus.google.com/communities/107613355619426807198

      • +1

Yes but not everyone wants to use Google Plus.

        • But it's better to not fragment the discussion. The previous users who own this device could give you knowledgeable feedback from their experiences.

        • @kimae:

          Agreed.

        • Could say the same thing about Facebook. Google+ is definitely a lot more community and tech orientated. Whatever people do, keep it all in one place.

  • +3

Damm I was hoping it would be sold out by now I cant resit any longer, there are lots of mixed reviews on Amazonbut that also reflects purchasing at a much higher price, my expectations aren't very high and I hope this does not turn into a lemon.

    • I see what you did there…

      • God that was funny, Bravo on the pun JC, heh!

Based on my personal experience with HP 23" Android Slate, I would steer clear of anything Android on HP because firmware updates and support are none.

Would be good for those who are technically minded who like to dabble in unusual environments, test a lot of things, habitual tester and error finder, consistent attempter of getting things right etc… It didn't suit me with my slate that kept locking up forcing reboot, or browser just crashes like IOS 8.3 running on the first Ipad type of experience… so I obtained a refund.

Not discouraging anyone from purchase, just warning EVERYONE the potential fun they will have with this oddball product.

You do get a lot of specs for the money, the summation of all parts is still equal to a pile of poop unfortunately.

  • Is MS Office supported on this?

    • Yes, MS Office is supported after you update the device to 4.4.2 but there are many office suites compatible on the playstore. However, beware, according to many users, after applying the update, there are major lag issues with the device and you lose the potential to root. You can read about below:

      https://plus.google.com/communities/107613355619426807198

      • Yes but going to 4.4.2 has many advantages. Can you roll-back?

        • I don't believe so. I've gone through the most of the posts on g plus site and it seems users report HP intentionally removed the previous stock image on their support site so you can't roll back at all.

        • +2

@boxall: You linked a Samsung product..this is HP and that's not the multi window function they're discussing about. There's a specific HP multi window app installed as bloatware for this device. That's what causing the problems but you can't remove it because the device isn't rooted.

I spent a few hours today reading about this device, my conclusions are if you can't root this device, it's not going to be worth the money, especially if you intend to upgrade the stock rom to OTA 4.4.2 KitKat. This will cause havoc for the device and doing nothing at all (leaving at 4.3) is a disaster as well (constant WiFi drop outs, battery draining…), so here's hope the few more devices shipped through this bargain will get someone to work out how to root this.

        • Wi-Fi, SoT, oddly weren't flagged as issues in a number of other pioneer \reviews. Oddly.
Supposing that I might decline /disable updates for a time till, whatever materialises…
I'll need to root Oneplusone to control + limit data 4g anyway-
learning of the crap Google REgressed explicitly in android 5,
before streaming on this wonderful display laptop.

        • @daver: rule 1. Don't give Google your WiFi password.

        • @kimae:

Someone in the forums did say they disabled it.

yes for sure this is contributing to the issues with stutter, but you can turn it off in settings which I did and its been fine since :smileyhappy:"

        • @boxall: huh? I thought you are still waiting for your device. A few posts above you said the following:

"Planned ship 11/6 and delivery 16/6 for me."

How can you turn it off in settings without having received the device?

        • @kimae: It's been on sale for a few weeks now and was mentioned in another post. Mine is expected to arrive next week.

        • @Clear: read his other posts, he just bought it when this bargain was listed

        • @kimae:

Sorry I was quoting someone else in the forums.

  • -4

If only it had decent internals. Arm + Android unfortunately isn't great for laptop stuff.

  • Finally a worthy successor for my humble haipad i7 <ICS/600p— found three year ago on Ozbargain. You had read my mind, or comment rather, on the dreary Asus deal the other day: just how we seem to miss such niche, giant display, sensible-resolution, CHEAP ±KB, touchscreen surfaces.

Could not resist at this cost (±6.80cashrewards cb) AND even after considered view of Amazon, Google+ community fb. Decent tips n advice there too.
