  • Any deal on the 4G model?

    • +1

Deal isn't as attractive. $200 more for 4G model.

      • +2

If you're smart you'd have a smart phone with WIFI hotspot facility to share your mobiles' broadband therefore reducing the number of SP accounts and contracts ;)

Also, $200 for 4G is not a bargain.

Woops, suppose to reply to abc. I agree with TA.

        Thanks for the neg vote.

        • Possibly but that's not "smart" for some users as it causes high battery use - more so if the cellular network is bad often (so um … non-Telstra networks for me).

For example I'm already down to 30-40% everyday and I don't even have WiFi turned on nor use data beyond syncing a small number of apps like email and calendar.

        • +2

These days you can get data sim cards that share your data allowance with your primary mobile device. My Telstra account comes with it free. Far more convenient than hot spotting.

        • @atlas: Ah OK - not heard of it before but that's the "best" way to do it IMO :)

        • say I've got the wifi only tablet and uses my phone to share the connection via wifi hotspot,

does that mean if I configured my tablet to allow auto update for my applications when connected to wifi as I want to keep my apps up to date, would I be potentially updating the apps by using my mobile data allowance?

or is there a way to specify a particular wifi connection to not enable auto update?

      • G'day TA. Would need a solid but no frills tab for work. How is this one bench marked against others in terms of value and performance? Thanks!

        • +1

I find the benchmarks on this device to be outstanding given today's economy.

        • @Jmally25: Thanks !
Is there a solid Windows tab you'd recommend? Just thought might be handy if work laptop and tab shares the same system. Cheers

        • @melfes:

          Surface Pro 3

        • @melfes: What sort of tablet are you looking for? If you are looking for a laptop replacement, Surface Pro 3 has the processing power of an ultrabook. If you are looking for just a simple tablet, I think any of the baytrail tablets with 2GB ram would suffice (that being said, cherry trail tablets like Surface 3 are coming out now).

I have to warn you though, Windows tablets, while they are better for productivity (document editing etc) than ARM tablets, they lack the apps (of course, you could go for desktop programs which are generally resource hogging and not touchscreen friendly) and generally are worse for watching movies (lower resolution) or playing tablet games (not much are there to begin with on Store).

        • @AznMitch: I am after a productivity/business windows tablet. The primary purpose is for document processing and demonstration at business meeting and occasional movie and gaming. I'd need a powerful/snappy Windows one that can be used as laptop but love the size/mobility of tablet; runs smoothly and have connectivity to hook up with many peripherals like projector for doing PPT etc

Willing to pay 1500 if it lasts

          Thanks for any input :)

        • @melfes: Hmmm, connectivity can be an issue (unless you buy those hubs/docking station) for Surface Pro 3, but I think Surface Pro 3 would fit your needs (that being said, if you can wait, SP4 is about to be announced, which would reduce the price on SP3 by fair amount). I am sure there are other options, I'd just wait arount for a bit since there are fair bit of Windows 10 devices that are getting released/announced soon (1~3 months time period I think) that looks cool.

        • @AznMitch: Mitch thanks alot for steering me to the right path. i believe surfacepro is gonna suit my needs with all the peripheral hubs albeit not cheap.
I will also keep an eye for other win 10 tabs. cheers

    must….resist…….buying……

  • I always get confused with Samsung tablets - it's hard to know what's good and what's rubbish.

Is this a new model? High end specs? Is the fingerprint scanner the crappy one from the Note 4/Galaxy S5 or the new one from the Galaxy S6?

    • Released July 2014. So no, it doesn't have the new fingerprint scanner.

      • +1

Yes it does have fingerprint scanner.

SuperAMOLED screen is fantastic, and battery life has been good, charge it every 3rd day even with daily use.

Bought my one for $324, so far haven't seen any shop sell it for less than that until now with all the cashback bonanzanazas

        • Samsung's AMOLED screens are great, sure, but I would pause and weigh your options if video image quality and/or image (as in pictures) quality is important to you as some people find them garish and unlifelike (is that a word?) compared to IPS or current generation LCD.

It's not a reason to avoid the device necessarily though. Most non-video applications look excellent including video games but if your someone who watches an hour of TV or a film everyday then it's a factor to consider.

        • +1

          @Diji1:

I have this tablet and think its great for video.

        • Deleted

        • I got one for $300 delivered via ebay the other week (the 32gb version)

I agree with everything you said. Great tablet.

        • +1

@Diji1: Tab S is very decent in terms of colour reproduction though. I think it was better than iPad Air in many respects in one of the comparisons done by displaymate.

          http://www.displaymate.com/Color_Accuracy_ShootOut_1.htm

        • He said the NEW fingerprint scanner which the tab S range does not have. You need to swipe on the older FP scanner whereas on the new one you can hold your finger on it to unlock, similar to the iPhone.

    • +1

I believe it goes in this order, from crappiest to bestiest:
      Lite
      Tab
      Note
      Tab S

I'm happy with my 8.4 tab S, but I did disable the fingerprint reader when installing Cyanogenmod, so can't comment on that facet.

      • +1

Thanks that's useful. If only Samsung would create a more user-friendly naming convention.

        • +1

I think they are trying to, but they haven't released any Note tablets at all for 2 years (btw, Note 10.1 2014 is as good as Tab S other than the screen as far as I know).

          My knowledge goes:

          Tab Lite
          Tab (Now Tab A?)
Tab Pro (Technically only thing that this tablet differs from Note line is s-pen and RAM, but looking at how slow the upgrade is comming out, it's definitely low on Samsung's priority list)
          Note/Note Pro/Tab S

Currently, Note and Tab S are the top Samsung tablets (In terms of SoC and RAM, ignoring the region specific models). There was a rumoured note tablet that didn't get released last year. I think they are trying to fix their naming mishap with "Pro" and "A" but it's confusing as hell still.

        • @AznMitch: I completely forgot about the Pro….. and so has Samsung ;)

        • +1

@OZB Al: I WANT MY LOLLIPOP ON MY TABPRO 10.1! ARGH! Though, I think TabPro 12.2 is definitely getting Lollipop, I don't think they've even started developing one for TabPro (A speculation from one of the forums I visit was that TabPro 10.1 would get ported version of Lollipop that Note 10.1 2014 gets when Note 10.1 2014 gets one).

I think they've tried to change the naming system so that Pro means high end and blah, but with Tab S and Tab A, I think they've lost their train of thoughts.

EDIT: Shouldn't have said definitely, since Samsung can stop developing midway through.

        • @AznMitch:

Ehh, I'm pretty sure that note 10.1 2014 won't get an update… Although I would love to be wrong!

        • @AznMitch:

The Tab A has only just been released recently (i think May 2015) and it's pretty crap… budget specs (similar to the Galaxy Tab 4 but with a S pen).

I would not recommend it… screen looks like crap on the Tab A so i got the Tab S instead.

        • @edrift: Yeah, it's on par with the normal Tab series (there is one with s pen and one without). I think it's pretty much the new budget line (what Tab used to be). I don't see it as a "Note" tablet, since 1. it's not under the name, "Note", 2. Tab A model with the s-pen is called Tab A with S-pen or something like that.

I don't know, they've changed the naming system so much, it's hard to say what is budget line without making the sentence convoluted. Though since Tab 3 lite was budget line of the budget line, I think Tab A would be above Tab lite at least.

I personally think, if you are going to get a budget Samsung tablet, there are better options out there.

      • How'd you install cyanogenmod?

        • Easily.

I also installed the cyanadelta app and use it to update to the latest nightly once a week or so.

Void warranty blah, blah, blah ;)

  • Good deal! Hopefully the 10.1" will be on special soon.

    • there never will be… the Tab S only comes in 8.9" and 10.5"

that 10.5 vs 10.1 actually made a big difference. MS Office is only free for tablets with screen sizes up to 10.1"… sadly i only found this out after trying to install on my 10.5" Tab S!!!

      • Hayes indeed you are right, i meant the 10.5".

I think the Tab S is still a good tablet. New refreshed models are coming this year but for the money, these are still good value. The processor is a bit outdated, but now with Lollipop firmware available the experience is much faster and smoother.

For watching media you can't beat the AMOLED screens. It's like having a portable plasma TV with the same black levels.

    • Yeah i agree. I just got the Tab S 10.5" model a couple weeks ago and it's great! Screen is amazing as you do get the inky blacks like a plasma TV without the typical LCD light bleed.

But performance of this tab isn't as fast as i would've liked. When i compare it to my LG G2 isn't not really any faster (i play marvel contest of champions and it lags a bit on both the LG G2 and Tab S).
