        • Having both an APS-C and a FF, I'd go with the 24mm, if the 40mm is anything to go by. The build and image quality is a bit nicer and I actually prefer the ~38mm equivalent that you get with the 24mm. Plus it's smaller.

    • personally if you already own the older version is probably not worth the upgrade to the new STM version. Image quality comparison is very similar except a full open aperture you can notice 7 blades instead of 5. Taking photos I would like to see how much faster it actually is to auto focus.
anyone who don't own a nifty fifty, this is a great buy. With a crop or full frame camera the lens takes amazing portrait photos even for a real beginner.

  • A beginner will not like this lens compared to any zoom lens. They will use it once, say isn't the bokeh terrific and then never use it again. Put the money towards a zoom.

    • +1

From going the kit lens to a prime, image quality much better, better sharpness as well as letting in about 2 stops more light in, I say it is worth it even for beginners, as it forces them to use a single focal length and zooming with their feet.

I agree that most beginners will prefer zooms over prime because of the versatility of it. But those looking to progress with their photography will eventually seek a prime such as this for low light shooting.

    • I can only assume a beginner who was serious enough to buy a DSLR would have got one with a kit zoom lens. And the 2nd lens they should get should be a prime. Once you get good at using prime, you can't justify going back to a zoom unless you paying alot of money for a red ring.

      • It's hilarious that you think someone buying a dslr makes them 'serious'.

90% of dslrs are kit lensed, auto-mode, wielded by retirees, soccer mums and guys 'into tech'.

    • This beginner didn't. I shot exclusively with 50mm 1.8 at the start. Upgraded to a Sigma 30mm and then eventually went full frame.
4 years and thousands on gear later and I still don't own any zooms.

I get asked all the time for recommendations for SLRs from friends. Most insist on getting a DSLR because 'they want to learn.' Most stick with lens kit zooms and lose interest. The occasional few who actually do usually experiment with primes because they do something that smaller cameras struggle with (low light, bokeh etc) and they get into it.

If you want to "zoom" in and take a close up of just someone's head, how do you do that with primes?

        • +1

          You move your legs.

        • -1

You cannot 'zoom' in with a 50mm lens onto someone's face by moving your legs, as it will substantially distort the face. Try googling it. Please explain your neg.

        • Use a portrait length prime?

          Duh?

        • -1

So if you want the whole body you use the 50 mm lens, and if you want to zoom in on a face you say, hang on a sec, while I swap to a 90mm lens? And then if another person somes into the picture you take off the 90mm lens and put on a 24mm lens? I am saying to beginners to forget the primes and get one good zoom. If you want to be arty and have all the time in the world you can get by with three or four primes. Or just get a zoom.

I do not need more lenses.
I do not need more lenses.
I do not need more lenses.

Damn you, why do you do this?

    • +5

True. You need a new camera ;)

    • Wait .. Eneloop deal coming soon .. :)..

    • True, you need to take better pictures!!:P

  • I have the old version and this was without doubt the best value lens on the market at the time so I'd say this too would be great value due to the improvements….

  • I cant find it anywhere but can i use this on my 500d?

    • Yes. 500d and this lens both use the EF mount.

    • They have reduced the price from $170 to $145 and are also the cheapest according to shopbot. Plus it will be Australian stock.

Perhaps it's not an outrageous bargain, but it's a good deal based on the above points.

I think it serves the community better when we post facts and less opinion, I assume you have a reason for your 'no deal', care to elaborate?

  • Seems like a bargain for a full frame lens. Besides the STM motor, it looks like the focus ring seems to have gotten wider, making it more usable.

  • Will this fit the Canon 600D ?
    Thanks

    • Yes. The lens and body both have an EF mount.

      • Thanks. Got one.

  • FYI for those doing pickup, since the store pickup option on website doesn't really show stock - I got a call from my local store (3124) saying that they've run out of stock but there's more coming in the next couple weeks so they will let me know when it arrives.

  • so confirm racv 5% works?

  • +3

For those continually asking "Will this fit my camera?"

If you look at your camera body without the lens attached you will see a RED DOT and a WHITE SQUARE

The red dot is for EF lenses and the white square is for EF-S lenses

So if your camera has both the red and the white, it supports EF and EF-S lenses.

If it only has one or the other then it only supports one or the other.

  • Just purchased one at Chadstone!

Unfortunately you can't use the $10 Voucher right away if you have just signed up for CludTed's. Maybe you can join online and then use it another day. Or just come back another time and purchase a UV Filter.

Speaking of UV Filter, I purchased the 52mm from eBay thinking it was the same filter thread as the ii, it's 49mm now if you're getting one. @_@

  • Follow up, I joined ClubTed earlier but I wasn't given a card or a voucher? Did they forget? :|

    • +1

I signed in at 10am, walked in at 1pm. Said I have joined their club online, gave them my email address, they entered my contact details into their system, and then they accepted my printed out voucher.

      • So did you get it for $135?

        • Yes, correct.

      • +1 - did the same trick yesterday

Noob question, how does this beat my standard kit 18-55 len?

  • Is the EF 24mm lens good?
