4x Telstra 9850 DECT Phones & Answering Machine $46 @ Harvey Norman (Save $116)

600

Just went to Harvey Norman to buy a DECT phone for mum. Saw these on the specials table. A nice sales-lady walked over and told me they were only $46. I almost fell over. That's an incredible 70% off. HN sells the single handset for $37. Anyway, bought a set then felt the need to post as it seems an incredible deal. Mum's happy :)

  • is that only works with telstra phone or can be use for other service provider?

    • +5

Nothing to do with your service provider. Just plug them into your phone socket and away you go.

    • Is will work, these are not mobile phones.

    • +14

Just the branding is Telstra. Works as per normal.

Takes 3rd place in the typing speed challenge

    • I used to ask them if I can use these oversea cause they state on the box it cant be used outside australia. But work perfectly oversea. So i think they just want to trick.

      • Certain features like caller id display may not work on overseas networks

    Hi TA.

You have done a great job posting up many good deals. A+++
Anyway I have also recently done something good for my mum (she's actually my mother in law). I signed up an SIM for her with Vodaphone (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/192739). Since they actually don't use the landline very much, my in laws plan to disconnect their landline. Myself, I haven't use the landline for at least 7-8 years. I think the landlines is getting more and more declined as technology develop. Like many other things in life…

    • +5

Hi Lone star. I tend to agree, but there's no taking the landline away from mum. She too has a mobile on a very old Telstra prepaid plan, and I top that up for her every few months. I've tried to convince her there's no need for the landline, but she's afraid all her family and friends would be hesitant to call her on the mobile. She says I'm the only person that actually calls her on it lol. She loves chatting away on the phone, so I've never really pushed it. If she's happy, I'm happy :)

      • Hihi.. Of course when we do something for our parents and if that makes them happy, we all feel happy.. :)
Well, I never convinced my in laws to cut off their landline. They wanted it themselves. Money saved is money earned, you know. hihi
Anyway, wish you and your family a safe and happy long weekend TA. :)

      • I kept the landline due to the reliability of the landline, under emergency, using mobile phone to call an ambulance or police is a pain, especially u r half panic and try to stay calm, the bad reception of mobile will just make it worse.

bought this just now as current cheap ones bought 4 yrs ago have finally carked it (batteries mainly)

I mainly have my landline (part of a bundle anyway) for my parents to call me on, coz they don't want to call my mobile, because it's "too expensive"

Was happy to spend the $5.95 extra on delivery, rather than go and queue up to buy in a store not close to me only to find that a fellow ozbargainer has just brodened the lot of them

Hi Shmahoo. True, for the oldies to use mobiles will almost always seem to be "too expensive". The deal I got for my in laws was like this: $35mth, but you get UNLIMITED mobiles and landline calls. 300mins to overseas and 3 Gigb of internet download. And there's NO contract. Not often you can find a cheaper deal.

Does anyone sell it at the $160 full price? Looks like 70 bucks is the normal price… Might still be a good deal but not 70% off good deal? http://www.pocketronics.com.au/telstra-9850-quad-1.8ghz-sms-…

    • +2

Your link says "These are MANUFACTURER REFURBISHED to NEAR NEW condition." which explains the cheap pricetag

    Thanks TA. Great job!

I am able to hear frequencies that many others can't hear. It's possible I might be a dog :) One time, I had my hearing tested for a job and the woman tested my hearing 3 times to make sure I wasn't cheating. She told me I had unusually good hearing at the high end of the frequency spectrum and thought I might be watching her press the buttons.

A friend of mine has these Telstra handsets and the sound gives me a headache when I use them. I'd call the sound 'slightly tinny'. I definitely prefer Panasonic to these Telstra handsets. It's possible there may be some setting to improve the sound quality.

If you don't have sensitive hearing (ie. you can't hear the monitor squeal when CRTs are switched on if you're within about 30 metres), then you will most probably be fine with these handsets. For the price, these Telstra handsets are great value.

I'll look out for some Shmackos deals for you

    • It sounds like you do have good high frequency hearing.
However, normal standard hearing test only up to 8kHz. Many people have very good hearing at 4~8kHz, nothing unusual about that if you 've done enough tests not just for hearing loss people

    • I can still hear the old CRT televisions when they're switched on - but nowadays since most are LCDs, it's more of an announcement for "oh wow, someone's old TV still works"

      • I typed this response really softly using a virtual on-screen keyboard out of respect for your hearing

    Thanks TA. Just ordered one

  • Hope the displays are better on Telstra phones these days.. I bought a 5 handset system few years back and all the displays don't work properly any more. My folks had a different set of Telstra handsets and displays also went on those..

Good price on these anyway. I keep wanting to buy a new set, then remember that we pretty much never use them anyway..

Can you use these phones as intercoms? For e.g I'd like to put them all in different bedrooms around the house and allow people to call each other.

    • +1

      Yes looks like it:

◦Conference Call Capability Up to 4-way
      ◦Intercom Handset to Handset
      ◦Speakerphone On Handset
      ◦Call Features Call Transfer

      •Phone Memory ◦Phone Directory Memory 100 Names & Numbers
      ◦Caller ID Memory 30 Names & Numbers

      •Battery ◦Talk Time (hrs) Up to 12
◦Standby Time (hrs) Up to 160

      • Heck yes, I'm getting one. Thanks.

  • Hmmm…I bought this Panasonic from Dick Smith and still hasn't picked it up yet. Beside from extra hand set, just wondering which one is better. I don't care much about $7 different in price.

  • Do these use AAA batteries or specific ones? That's the most critical decisive thing for me

  • Ordered one set, thanks.

  • Can anyone tell me what the ear piece speaker is like? I have a Panasonic one similar, but be blowed if I can barely hear anyone on the other end, even after turning it up to max! Also, the ringing tone is not loud either, so I miss many calls!

  • Am I correct in understanding that the quad set means that the main base requires an RJ11/12 connection + power, while all the others just require power as they talk to the main base? ie Only one RJ11/12 jack is required between four phones?

Will be getting NBN soon which apparently means that all my phone sockets around the house will become useless as the phone has to plug into the NBN NTD.

    • -3

if you are getting NBN don't even worry about these antiques!

This deal is like getting a great deal on VHS cassette recorders. lol

      • +1

Not sure I really understand you there mate.
Why wouldn't I need a phone once I have NBN? As far as I've been informed, our current phones will still work except for the fact that there will only be one place to plug them in (the NTD) rather than the 3 or 4 I have scattered around the house now.

  • +1

Picked these up today. I can confirm that voice calls are clear. Loudspeaker is good on them. Intercom works on all of them, and is clear. Also good distance range from base station also. Over all. Pleased. Got one in shed. I'll be using them for intercom between shed and house

    • Thanks for the feedback. Are you able to tell me the answer to my question above as well - does each base need a to plug into a phone jack, or just the main base and the other three just connect to the main base?

      • +3

only the base needs to plug into the phone jack
the other 3 just need a power point to keep the handsets recharged, and they work without even being connected to powered dock as long as there is charge in them.

  • Looks like the deal has expired online. Theres only the triple and single handsets available now and they are too expensive.

  • Mine hasn't shipped yet. Has anyone got a delivery notification?

  • Two days ago, a lady from Harvey Norman rang to me, informed that they haven't got stock at Dandenong branch and asked my address for shipping. I provided and still waiting for my order.
