Vodafone Red SIM Only— $35/Mth Unlimited Calls/Text, 3GB, Forever (Add This to Existing Account)

1160

This is the Vodafone $50 Red SIM only plan, but costing $35/month indefinitely for a new personal mobile service, if:

  1. You have an existing Vodafone post-paid account; and
  2. You sign up this new service in addition to your existing service(s)

The plan gives you:

You need only commit to one month (ie $35), with no cancellation fee. You get the plan for $35 (discounted from $50) for as long as you keep it connected. Other selected fine print in footnote1.

This flyer came from a Vodafone store2, so suggest you could trek in and visit one if you want to sign up.

This is not the same as this (for business accounts, and discounted only for 12 months); or this (only from selected stores, and discount applies only for 12 months).

  1. Selected fine print: Offer ends 02.06.15 (unless extended). Data for use in Australia. Excludes Business and 24 month plans. For personal use by approved customers. Inclusions expire after 1 month. Offer available to existing Vodafone post-pay customers who sign up to a month-to-month $50 Red SIM Only voice plan or $50 Shared plan. Discount is applied as a recurring monthly credit as long as you remain connected. Min monthly spend is $35. Must connect for a minimum one month.

  2. Hat-tip to David on WP :)

Any workarounds for non-vodafone customers OP? Sounds like an amazing deal

    • +2

I suppose you could sign up for a $20 mobile broadband plan (useful to bung in your iPad/tablet) first. This gives you a Vodafone post-pay service.

Then sign up for the Vodafone Red SIM only plan, getting the discounted monthly fee. Then, at some later stage (I'd suggest after at least a month), if you don't need the mobile broadband service, get rid of it.

      • +1

Removing one of the services will result in the loss of the 30% off for the $50 Sim Only. You'll need to have both services connected.

        • Did this policy come in recently?

I took up a similar "additional service" offer last year, which gave 50% off the $50 Red SIM only. I cancelled the primary service in October, but the 50% off discount on the "additional" service continued while it was the only service on the account, up until I ported it out in March.

        • +1

@giles: I have a mate that did the exact thing earlier this year. He signed up for a second service offer the beginning of this year with the intention of cancelling his existing number once he had the second sim with the discount. He kept the both sims active for a month then cancelled the first sim. The next bill came around and the second sim no longer had the discount. He called up to confirm and they said that the offer was only triggered as long as there was another service on the account to 'attach it to'. Perhaps it has something to do with the recent system upgrade?

The only other workaround is flying out of Australia - at the International Departures area (past customs) the Vodafone Kiosk had this Red SIM deal for $35 also with no contract for new customers. I know this because I just purchased it on the spot and took it overseas for 10 days with the $5 roaming (just got back home today). Worked really well in The Netherlands and Germany, but not the best in France. Hope this helps :)

      • Which airport? Was at Melbourne Intl last week and didn't see this around anywhere…..

        • +2

Was at Sydney International Airport. As far as I understood it was forever, however my intention was just to purchase it for the month to take overseas for data usage.

      • Does it have any expiration date for 35$ to go back to 50$? And interesting if obe can get one being a customer already…

        • +1

          "indefinitely"

          That should last a while.

        • @Utopian: I mean for the one you get at the airport terminal… I.e. it has the same "non-expiring " condition.

        • +1

          @Utopian:

Indefinite boss, its a great deal

        • @Jeffummer:
Is this a standalone plan or similar to OP, I need a original red plan with voda and get the additional one at airport?
Thanks!! Hope someone knows since I'm flying out this week!!!

      • +1

I've seen those but can't help think that $5 a day roaming is rather expensive if you're going for more than a few days, especially if the SIM cards only being purchased with the intention of being used overseas.

It won't work in every country (this won't in Netherlands for example), but if you travel to the 'friendly' regions on the following SIM card, you get 25GB of roaming data which I assume should work well when coupled with some Skype credit for making calls over a data connection and bypassing any roaming call charges - http://www.simcorner.com/uk-prepaid-simcard.html

Alternatively apparently most airports will sell you a local SIM.

As a local SIM, then yeah, $35 for that SIM card looks pretty good.

      • what can you do with $5 roaming?1 email per day?

    • +2

Quick update for anyone interested - I managed to get the $35/month plan with 3GB data (not as successful as some others)
Went to the local Voda store and they wouldn't budge up to 4GB but were happy to sign me up to a $20 data plan (2.5GB) as my initial plan and then port my number over from Virgin onto the $50 red plan. 20mins from saying hi and everything including data was working flawlessly.
$35 month-to-month contract and the guy says that I can cancel the data plan after one full month's billing.
Also you get billed pro-rata so since there's only two days until the next billing cycle, looks like I've got 5.5GB data to get through :D

      • +1

Hey jsjc, that's great info - exactly what I was wanting to know, and what I will have a go at later today. Thank you.

  • +1

Sounds great but how do you get this? link doesnt show this offer

    • Thanks — have added text to the description saying this was an in-store flyer, so suggest your best bet for signing up is in a Vodafone store.

      • +1

Vodafone call centre on 1555 are also aware of this deal and can sort it out for you. Note that they wouldn't let me convert my wife's existing month-to-month Vodafone service to this one but YMMV.

Edit: and cheers for the hat tip @giles!

        • as in if i'm using a month to month currently I cant get this deal? still dont quit get it

        • @tm87: You need two people both on Vodafone. One person is on an existing Red post-paid plan, and the other person needs to be on a network other than Vodafone (or port out and port back in). You then add this $35 Red service to the existing Red post-paid plan as a second service, and port your other non-Vodafone number to it.

        • @davechan:

So the existing number/customer on Vodafone MUST have a RED plan? I am currently on a post-paid deal with voda but it is not a red plan, does that mean my friend cannot get this deal?

        • @zxreth:

          That I don't know., sorry.

  • So let me get this straight. If you are already with VF post-paid, you can get the $35 deal, however you have to at least hold onto both the two for the one month and only after the one month can you potentially cancel the first?

    • +1

I think the offer's intended to encourage existing customers to bring additional services (like family members) onto the same account. That is, take up the offer if you ultimately want two or more services on your account.

If you only want the one service, and you're not currently in a fixed contract, you could maybe try this.

  • Good work!

  • +1

This would be great for your kid if you trust them not to go over the 3GB and if you're already on Vodafone!

    • good way to get ripped by your kids, unless there is a way to block international calls!!!

      • +1

Why would the kids be calling overseas? They would most likely be using mobile data on apps..

    • +2

I'd rather put the kid on the prepaid cap and steal their phone every weekend to hotspot unlimited data for netflix…My daughter hates the weekends :)

  • nice.

  • How to get this offer if you are already a $50 red sim only customer?

    • +7

You could maybe port your number out to another carrier first. I'd suggest amaysim Unlimited + 7 GB, currently $19.90 for the first month. You could even try stacking that with CashRewards $56 cashback.

Then sign up for a (temporary) Vodafone service, like perhaps a $20 mobile broadband one (as in step one here), then port your number back to Vodafone on the discounted $35 deal.

      • +5

Before you do that, try calling retentions and "asking for your account number"
(used to port your number). There's a good chance retentions will give you this offer to stick around - save you some hassle.

      • According to what I was told by the sales person, you have to keep the existing account ongoing to get the discount so if you cancel the existing account the discount goes away as well. So in the pretend scenario you will have to keep your 'temporary' account permanent, won't be worth it unless you need 2 accounts :(

Has anyone manage to get it for just one account?

  • +1

why do i need another cap ????

  • Hi, I am in a VF 24 month contract now so can I get this deal? My contract will be expired in September I think.

    • iam on the same boat as you, but my contract is end next thurs. I think you will not able to transfer your current contract to this deal, as it only for a post-paid customer (month to month deal {use first and pay at the end of the month}) and different providers.

      • You will need to finish the whole contract before jumping onto a sim only!

  • I have no clear idea about this offer,
I already have $40 12 month contract left, what would be the benefit of getting this for me?

  • As per title 3gb data isn't unlimited. Perhaps needs rewording.

    • Now fixed…
      "$35/mth unlimited calls/text, 3GB"

  • +4

Titles seems OK for me, I'm sure most people wouldnt expect to see an unlimited Data service , especially for $30pm

  • Offer available to existing Vodafone post-pay customers who sign up to a month-to-month $50 Red SIM Only voice plan or $50 Shared plan.

    What is a $50 Shared Plan ???

It doesn't seem to exist under the "Shared Plan" information on their website…

I'm assuming maybe they mean the $50 Red SIM Only plan (purchased after 2 July 2014) which is being used as a "compatible with Vodafone Shared" option.

    • A $50 shared plan has the same inclusions as the $50 M2M red sim only.
The difference is that if you already have a RED plan ($70, $80, $100 RED 24/12 month plan or $50, $60, $100 RED Sim Only), once you connect this $50 SHARED plan to your account, you can share the inclusions between both plans.
Meaning - the 300 international minutes and 3GB of data of the $50 Shared plan will be added to the pool of inclusions your current RED plan already has.

  • I am currently on month to month $45 with 1 more gb of data seriously considering jumping on this $35 instead of $45. will give them a call tomorrow and then after the first month port my number from the $45 to optus for a day or so and then transfer it back to the $35

    • Remember you need to have an existing service so if you port out your a new customer unless you have more than one VF service.

    • +1
      1. You have an existing Vodafone post-paid account; and
      2. You sign up this new service in addition to your existing service(s)

As jlogic says, it's an additional service to your $45, not instead of it…

  • My contract with VF end on 3rd of June and wondering what could be best way to get this deal. My father is also in VF post paid if that will help (different account).

    • +1

Call up and ask for the date when your contract ends. They will ask why so say that you want to go with a cheaper provider. They will transfer you to a sales guy to give you offers to keep you on board, say you want about 3gb data/month and they will offer you this.

Happened a few days ago for me, contract also ending early June.

Maybe even try to haggle for a few more dollars off if this is an advertised offer now

  • In the past Vodafone would let me keep my Business on Vodafone plan (previously business on 3) and move that to a different service number.

With some kids needing numbers and cheap plans soon, I wonder if I can connect a new number for one of my kids on this plan then swap the plans around???

    • You wont be able to swap the plans around boss :) Your kids will have to enjoy the amazing inclusions

    • In theory - Sign up one of your kids on a low cost vodafone plan then you can make a new connection on the $35 plan and port your number to it (since your kids plan will count as an active service). You can then change your kids plan to whatever you want. Being kids though I imagine you want them on prepaid not on the plan, amaysim offer great deals for prepaid autorenewals.

  • So can prepaid vodafone customers get this

    • +1

No but IMO they get a much better deal with unlimited data every weekend on the prepaid cap plans.

  • -3

    Is the network still Vodafail?

    • +1
      • +3

To be fair speed doesn't mean coverage, and the less people on the network the faster it would be.

        • +1

Good point, this is in the northern suburbs of Melbourne. I have noticed that I am getting better coverage in country Victoria the past few years, but obviously this is anecdotal evidence and I could just be lucky.

  • Does the red plan have unlimited weekend data?

    • No it does not. Only on prepaid at the moment

  • +4
    • +1

… but it adds a 24-month contract AFAIK, and there's even talk there is no extra data.

      • +1

You are right about the 24 months.. :/ But I went to Deick Smith and the guy confirmed the plan exists (6GB) but I dint sign up yet, so not sure if he was 100% sure..

  • Does the additional account have to be in the same address and invoice?

  • It says "Discount is applied as a recurring monthly credit"

This is confusing me. Does this mean that they still charge you $50 each month, but you get $15 of Vodafone credit or something…dunno.

However, it does say "Min monthly spend is $35".

    • The amount for the plan is $50 so this will appear on the bill. But each month on the bill it would say $15 credit applied which will bring the total down to $35.

      • Thanks, but credit applied to what? Do you get that $15 back as cash in your bank account?

        • +1

          Pre-bill credit:
$50 bill - $15 credit = you pay $35. Note this works as it is a post-paid (not pre-paid) service

        • I currently receive $4 discount on my bill for my contract. This is how it appears (exc GST):

          http://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/59216/30230/ozb.jpg

And that amount comes off the bill total

    • Yeah its same as my telstra cable I pay 20$ for super speed upgrade but they said it was free. Further down the bill there's a $20 loyalty credit which I will lose if I cancel the speed lol so it is free. So your Voda bill will say 50 red plan but have a -15$ on the itemised section

  • Just did it, and you can add the $35 plan to the SHARED PLAN!!

    • which shared plan are you using?

  • I'm already on a 70 red plan with phone - 4gb. so add this one to a shared 7gb to be shared between 2 sim users

    • I am on the same plan, 1postpaid with phone $70, second one $35 monthly. Total $105, including 7gb + 600 min international calls. All shared plus $5 international roaming on both numbers.

      • How do you get them to activate sharing? I too have the $70 red with the current promo $35 for $50 m2m and would like to be able to share data between them.

        • I sign up for $35 mtm with shared at the same time. Not sure in your case but call customer care or port out and sign up again mtm with shared plan.

  • I wonder if its better to go with the other deal

  • I'm not quite understanding how this can be stacked with the shared plan? I just spoke to a rep and the shared plan is an entirely different thing to this $50 m2m that we're getting for $35.

on the $50 red sim only m2m, you can't share data. It won't work either with my $70 post paid red plan.

How are people stacking the shared feature onto the $50 red sim only m2m?

    • I also spoke to vodka again initially she was happy to share the 50$ plan with mine 70$ one but once I told I am getting discount of 15$ she said she can't help and it won't happen

      • Hello.

You can add this onto a 70 red. This is a 50 sim only with a indefinite credit of 15 dollars. So technically you are adding a 50 sim only but paying 35.

  • well, i just shared the $35 plan with my existing red plan. your rep probably didn't get the correct info.

  • +1

I have 70$ red plan and 50$ red fir my wife. After calling 1555 they signed me to this 35$ sim only plan also I got 800 international minutes and 13gb data to use before this billing cycle ends which is 8tj of this month

    • So you have 3 sims now or did your wife plan reduced to 35?

      • Nothing changed from allowance & 2 simcards only price is reduced by 15$°

  • Did anyone else sign up for Vodafone's recent 'double data' promo with $5 off and double data that was on whistleout.com.au in March?

I switched from my contract (which had ended in February) to a $50 red sim plan. The promo was $5 off the $50 so $45 a month with 6gb instead of 3gb.

I've gotten my bill and noticed that there is no additional data and I'm paying $45 a month for 3 gb.

I then rang up to query but they said there was no such thing. Didn't argue and said fine, please put me on the $35 a month $50 red sim plan and they said that because I received the $45 version and it was after the 29th of March, I can't have the $35 plan.

Anyone know what my options are here? I'm super pissed with VF as I feel I was completely swindled off the
'double data' deal which was posted on whistleout in March.

*My wife is still on a contract with Vodafone till August, so if I cancel my monthly $45 red sim plan and she's still under contract, can I sign up for the $35 a month red sim plan?

    Gotta love the telcos!

    • +1

Yes u can sign up after cancelling but u won't have that number. If u want to keep same number then better port ur number once to another provider (amaysim 19$ for first month with 7gb data or get 2$ sim from Coles port ur Vodafone number to that and after a week or month sign up with Vodafone for 35$ plan. Make sure the number stays on the same name bcoz amaysim charged 15$ to change the name from my wife's name to mine as I had main account with voda

  • I signed up today I only got 3gb data as its not a contract I'll keep it for a while and then cancel it

  • +2

Dicksmith double data offer does exist and i don't understand why the other post has been deleted.

Just came back from Dicksmith store With…..

    unlimited calls within Australia
unlimited SMS to Australian and international numbers
    6 GB of data
300 minutes of calls to any foreign country

for $35 / Month for next 24 months. The double data and 30% off of $50 red plan applied on my account for the next 24 months. Its a month to month plan and i can shift to any network anytime. So not bound in a contract….

Only condition is you should have an existing account with Vodafone and get a new number or port in your another number to vodafone existing account.

    • Great news!

Can you please post some receipt or etc so we all can try this?

Which store was this and who did you speak with?

      Thank you.

      Cheers.

    • i don't understand why the other post has been deleted.

It's not deleted, it's here however the majority of users were not able to get the deal this morning/afternoon but it appears some stores (e.g. Perth store) are. Still a bit of confusion around the offer, even for the employees.

    • can you post any paper you got regard this deal please ?

      • Just rang DS store and asked them to send me the copy of the form they filled out for my Sim. Will update here once i receive it shortly.

      • +3
        • Nice work.
Now hopefully someone with even a little common sense will aporove of the offer. As I read it…..
$50 SIM ONLY for 30% off and DOUBLE DATA for (up to) 24 months.
Sim only = Month to Month.
          Easy.
          Shouldn't be this confusing!!

          Edit: Eligibility criteria applies.

        • @alterego13:

Sim only = Month to Month.

Just bear in mind that 'SIM only' doesn't always mean 'month to month', even on Vodafone.

There is such a thing as a Vodafone SIM only 24-month contract

It's not clear from the photo which this is, but according to mady123, the store said it's month to month.

        • In the photo, it showed: discounted to $35 over 24 months. Does it mean after that you will get charged $50 per month while this deal is $35 per month as long as your account is active? …

I read your post again and it answered my question: "…for $35 / Month for next 24 months. The double data and 30% off of $50 red plan applied on my account for the next 24 months…"

        • @giles:
Thank you giles for the correction. One would think 'sim only' meant 'sim only' i.e. NO CONTRACT
If only more Telcos would put it in simple words…one can only hope :)
