        you mean the "linited stock"?

    • Be sure to Order Online (at least, in SA)… or pay $149 each.

Avoid embarrassment: Order BEFORE you leave home, so you won't have to stand in MSY shop ordering it there… ;-)

Why is this tagged as Freebie?

        You mean PAWS my dear..

Thanks for this lovely deal.. Now only if you could find me a good deal on some Bones…

        Sniff sniff..

  • I don't know this one - it's cheap and may be OK. I use a DLink Share Center which is a bit dearer at about $120 It works well for me.

  • the one drive thing is a bummer but its cheap enough to break open and use in a real nas

    • If you buy two (2), you -might- be able to connect 'em in some way…

  • Are they open tomorrow?

$89 is sort of ok for a NAS shell

it sounds like these guys bought the nas, sell off the drives and then sell the shell

      • it sounds like these guys bought the nas, sell off the drives and then sell the shell

Why exactly does it sound like that?

The simplest explanation is usually the correct one and seeing as these come in various configurations from the manufacturer (diskless, partially & fully populated) I think it's probably more likely that they are just selling the diskless model.

      • Too bad these NAS's have only USB 2.0 ports (1 ea);
'could have sped things up, eg in 0-drive config,
if an ext'l HD could send data faster… :-(

So, does the suggested "qualified disk" req't fade
away, eg if there's only 1 of this one's 2 bays?

        Anybody have experience with these?

    • I bought a similar model to that a couple of years ago (EMC9000 Iomega Storcenter Ix2). I think the one you linked is a replacement for that exact model. The performance (of mine) was terrible, 'gigabit' was barely even 100megabits/s. The software was also poor and it would never spin the drives down. With every NAS unit I have a had exposure to, the performance has been terrible. I can't find any reviews for that particular model you linked, which I think is an oldish model too.

      • I have a buffalo single bay NAS (linkstation LS-something ) and it kinda does the job but at 60 bucks plus 90 for a 2tb hdd you are starting to get into microserver territory, which is infinitely more flexible and the chance of running into a bug or quirk that becomes a deal breaker is much lower. I am by no means an expert on NAS' but that's my initial experience with that NAS

I only got it because I got sick of running a laptop as a server 24/7 for the odd times I used it and the NAS probably uses less power (if something isn't hideously wrong with it)

      • The 1-bay counterpart has slower CPU speed & half the RAM (128 KB).

  • how much is the int drive worth?

    • assuming it's these:

      Seagate 7200 Barracuda/Grenada 2TB, Model ST2000DM001
      Hitachi 5400rpm CoolSpin (Mariner) 2TB, Model HDS5C3020ALA632

      at least $99!

      plus 3yrs warranty

its an ok deal for the drive itself.. as i said they throw in the nas box for free

      • Thanks m8, already got a qnap, was thinking about just ripping out the hdd.

  • Was just having a look at MSY price list and the Lenovo Iomega EZ Media & Backup NAS 3TB is $149
    http://www.msy.com.au/peripherals/15043-lenovo-iomega-3tb-70…

    • Even MSY must have [list / RRP] prices greater than "street" in amount.

When they want to sell, they discount, like all the rest. :-)

    • AP-ver (or same?):

Eg: 128 MB RAM, proprietary OS… deal-breaker(s)? up to 25 users? apps for iOS & Android, but no WiFi in the box… Bluetooth in lieu:

"The only protocols supported are Apple File Sharing using AFP, Bluetooth, FTP, TFTP, WebDAV and Samba / CIFS.

Bluetooth seems to be an interesting addition (and I haven't seen other NAS units officially claiming file transfer support over Bluetooth either), but we didn't have a USB Bluetooth adapter handy to test this out."

I'd be careful about using this box in a hot (un-aircon'd) room:

"After putting the unit through the paces, we observed that the SoC temperature settled down to around 75 C and the motherboard to 54 C. Iomega indicated that these temperatures are normal (and, given the complete absence of any cooling mechanism for the SoC on-board, it is not surprising)."

"Power: 15 Watts (max), 5 Watts (min), 25 Watts for 5sec (peak)
NOTE: These values represent a device with the highest
capacity HDD. Values may vary with other HDDs."

Need a special cable for non-RJ-45 "GbE" right?

(I must have blinked while they introduced GbE standard… details? Compatable w/ Ethernet, except for connector? Is there a simple+cheap GbE-to-RJ-45 cable?)

PS What I'd like is something like this WITH WiFi access for Android, iOS, etc.
(& maybe an RJ45, too), with a bay (maybe w/ 2 GB or more drive, in place),…

      Any Suggestions?

  • Wow, I wish you could buy a Synology NAS at his price.

Can this nas box be used to record home camera surveillance? I got a few cameras from the prev Kmart sale…

  • I think this review is the for unit in question: http://www.anandtech.com/print/6481/iomega-ez-media-backup-c…

I've got the 2 bay version, and it is excellent, get about 45MB/s transfer JBOD.

  • Sorry for my ignorance, I have read all comments clicked link and I'm still not sure, is there a hard drive in here or is this just a shell?!

    • +2

      Shell with a HDD inside.

      • +2

Thanks, man this a great deal then hard drive is worth alone, ive been looking for new HDD but might get this instead

  • No dnla right? My sony tv won't see this, will it?

    • +3
      • What does that mean though? Doesn't it actually need a DNLA server on it to work? Doesn't this imply that you need to run a DNLA server on a PC then target that drive on a network to find the drive.

        • +2

"This feature-rich drive has a built in UPnP™ AV Media Server (DLNA compatible)"

thats all you need to know, your tv will work with it assuming its not like my sony tv which supports DLNA but can only play images lol

  • Good for PLEX server?

    • I don't know if you can run Plex on it?

  • It looks like this iomega unit - infoadvertisement on youtube (2012!!)

Unless there was a way to know beforehand which drive you get, I'm not going to risk getting a seagate dud.

  • +3
    • For anyone interested mine came with a Seagate ST2000DM001-1CH1 (SATA-3, 7200RPM, 64MB buffer)
    • The unit gets hot (50c-70c) with high(er) usage however its case is made out of metal (except the front and the back). This helps with cooling given that there is no fan
    • WOL is not supported with the latest firmware by the look of it, not sure if the original firmware did support it (flashed it too soon)
    • You can get a full Linux SSH root access through hidden diagnostics http://iomega.nas-central.org/wiki/Root_access_enabling_%28H…
    • SSH does support port tunneling
    • /etc/debian_version reports 7.1
    • The stock was manufactured late 2013
    • Surprisingly there is a lot of community information about this unit, probably given that it's been around for a while now…
    • Turn OFF media indexing (Twonky) if you don't need DLNA in order to gain speed
    • There are a few apps available @ http://www.lifelineapps.com/?user_lang=en&device=ezmedia&ver…

This unit is fine for anyone looking for an entry level NAS. Note however that the disk is a single point of failure, so sync your data if you need redundancy (the unit can do the sync in many ways).
