  • Since the butane ones got banned, this is a good alternative.

I got my friend to bring me a few butane stoves from the USA.

Wow I didn't realise this. My aldi butane cooker must be worth millions now

      • Ep! Didn't realise these were banned

        • +4

Banned from sale, due to idiots who cannot read and follow simple instructions.
You can still use them and buy fuel.

    • They are coming back, rep told me at Anaconda, safer apparently

      • its going to be a while before they come back, if they ever do.

  • this is actually normally everyday price for this.

you realise these stoves are LPG not butane? you need an LPG bottle etc

Butane is a kind of LPG, and will work in this cooker. The problem of course is finding or making an adapter.
And there is a safety issue, as the butane cartridge must be kept notch-side up, or upright.
Though it is probably not a totally bad idea.

        http://www.originenergy.com.au/blog/about-energy/what-is-lpg…

        But what’s in it?
In Australia, LPG is propane gas, but overseas it can also be a mix of propane and butane gas.

lpg = propane, it is slightly different when it comes to vehicle lpg which is often a mix of more suitable propane with lower quality butane filler. i can get more into the specifics of why this is done if you really wish…

as for adapting a butane cartridge to an LPG stove…. no, just no.

Liquid Petroleum Gas. Butane burns near enough the same as propane. There is about 1% difference in energy per kg.
The mix varies by location as to what is available. Pure butane is no good in cold conditions, but otherwise is great. Where do you get this "lower quality filler" nonsense?
I know in northern WA, the 45kg cylinders always used to be butane.
The pure-butane disposable canisters are cheaper as they do not need to be as strong.

Not that I'd do this. Seems a bit silly to put such small cylinders on a big stove. But it could be done.

Ebay has plenty of adapters for hiking stoves.

          /me sighs
here we go, another internet expert…

propane is much more expensive than butane, hence its used as a "filler" in automotive lpg. they literally pack as much as conceivable into it to make the largest profits.

the only up side is that butane is a much lower octane than propane so in "duel fuel" cars it can make them run better. butane is 93ron vs propanes 110ron iirc.

there is alos a huge difference in its liquid to gas transfer temps, which off the top of my head i cant remember any more for each, but this will cause significant issues specially in a "gas withdraw" bottle as is used in BBQ's, not so much in liquid withdraw setups as in a vehicle LPG system.

I know in northern WA, the 45kg cylinders always used to be butane.

          i call bullshit.

The pure-butane disposable canisters are cheaper as they do not need to be as strong.

again i call bullshit, its cheaper simply because the gas inside is virtually worthless. hence why its used as a filler in auto lpg

Ebay has plenty of adapters for hiking stoves.

you mean something like http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Camping-Stove-Burner-Converter-Co… right?
what sort of halfwit does it take to not realise the adapters are to convert one type of
butane cartridge to another type of butane cartridge and nothing to do with propane? aka http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Kovea-Moonwalker-Hiking-Gas-Stove…

care to stop making yourself look stupid now and admit you are wrong?

    • Also curious why you bother mentioning the price of butane cartridges for an LPG stove?

If you're using a wok to steam food - this would be fine. It isn't going to cut the mustard for any sort of high heat work - you won't get enough energy out of those burners.

You'd need to look at a ring-style burner for that sort of portable energy output.

  • Does this include a hose? Probably with 3/8"LH connector.
Masters is $50 (or 45 with the regular 10% off)

Since the only prudent way to buy propane these days is the 8.5kg POL cylinders, you either need to do your own refills on the small cylinders, or get a POL-> 3/8 adapter.

  • This is good for … wok cooking

What wok are you using that will fit on that with the wind deflectors in place?

  • Been looking for one too.. was thinking of getting the Coleman eventemp.. waiting for it to go 150 again.

  • 6500 btu seems pretty less..

  • Gotta be careful with these stoves - the output can vary wildly and some of the cheap ones are just pathetic - takes 20 minutes to boil water!

One camping trip we had two of these and it was a stark difference between how quick one stove boiled a saucepan of water compared to the same saucepan on another one.
