      Intel Core i5-3337U

The Intel Core i5-3337U is an ULV-processor for laptops based on the Ivy Bridge architecture released in Q1 2013. Due to Hyperthreading, the two cores can handle up to four threads in parallel leading to better utilization of the CPU. Each core offers a base speed of 1.8 GHz but can dynamically increase clock rates with Turbo Boost up to 2.5 GHz (for 2 active cores) and 2.7 GHz (for 1 active core). As its Sandy-Bridge-based predecessors, it offers a 3 MB L3-Cache.

Ivy Bridge is an enhanced die shrink of the Sandy Bridge architecture with improvements on both GPU and CPU performance. The CPUs are produced in 22nm (versus 32nm Sandy Bridge CPUs) and are the first to introduce 3D transistors for increased energy efficiency when compared to similarly clocked Sandy Bridge processors. Other new features are integrated PCI Express 3.0 and DDR3(L)-1600 support.

The performance of the Core i5-3337U is slightly above a similarly clocked Sandy Bridge processor due to some architectural improvements. Therefore, overall performance is similar to the former Core i7-2677M or a Core i3-2330M.

    • Ivy Bridge (2012-era), not Sandy Bridge (early 2011).

      Easy way to know:

The number after the i3/5/7-X… (x) determines its generation.

So, the one in question is an i5-3337U. The number after the i5 is a 3… so, this is a 3rd generation.

Currently if I'm correct, we are 'up to' he 5th generation (so i3/5/7-5…). So, this one is 2 generations behind.

      • +1

Great, clear, easy to understand explanation.

      • So i5-760 is series 7? Even though its not

        • +1

          It is 3 digits

        • @t2do2dm:
but it is series 1 lynfield

  • So… Acer Aspire ES whatever it was (the $253.30 JB Hi-Fi one) upgraded with SSD & RAM or this?

    • +4

Different animals ,the acer is good for general stuff but this is better for heavier apps and games.

      • Is there any chance of adding an SSD inside?

        • +1
        • @Davo1111: sorry I meant as a second drive. Awesome link BTW, looks like there's no space for one.

        • @turna: ahh ok, i misread what you wrote.

It would be a straight replacement of the current sata hard drive only.

      • But I'm just thinking that if this is better at the "hard" stuff surely it'll be equal if not better at the "easier" stuff? Or am I mistaken?

As an example, you can't walk (Microsoft Word) if you can't run (video editing), but you could possibly walk and not be able to run. Am I making any sense?

        • +2

Have you been drinking ,if you can afford the I5 i think its the way to go but still put an ssd in it.

        • @paulaus: LOL no..
Wait, do you understand my analogy? Just realised I said it the wrong way round too.

I'm basically asking if this one is better at the general stuff too, given that it is stronger.

  • How would this go running roms? My gf's bro wants a laptop, specifically for N64 stuff and I guess mame etc

    • Shouldn't be a problem. Phones have been emulating n64 for a while now

    • +8

You could run ROMs on a Pentium4, Integrated Graphics and 2GB RAM. Just saying.

      • Lol..
To be honest I recall playing Gameboy colour and SNES roms on a Pentium 2, 256mb RAM computer. It would struggle a bit with N64 though, but Pentium 3 would've been fine (sufficient).

      • +2

        66Mhz Turbo mode ftw. amirite?

        • <3 486.

    • +1

      Overkill

    • Aah sorry its got nvidia graphics. I thought it was Intel HD4000 or something.. which I wasn't sure would work with N64 emulators

  • +2

    I don't give a shit if it's a touch screen…

Is this an HD or a FHD screen?

BTW, this is a very good deal regardless.

    • +11

      Woahhh easy there

      • +1

Sorry, long day at work and this weather isn't helping.

Also on the internet I become a wild animal :D

    • There's no way this is FHD.

      • If that's the case… I really cannot understand how ordinary consumers put up with HD rsolution on a 15.6 inch screen.

        • Yeah it's a terrible, awful existence for those ordinary er … laptop owners. Wait wut?

        • I have a 900p screen on a 15.6" laptop, and my 11.6" chromebook is 720p

I don't really mind the resolutions as anything i errr acquire is either in SD, or 720p. I have a 1080p external screen if I need that resolution.

        • @Diji1: oh the humanity!

        • @Davo1111:

          Yeah that's cool.

It's just that 720p on a 15.6 inch screen… You clearly see the pixels! I can't live with that.

          That's my only gripe.

        • @inose:
get an xps 13 with a 4k display. you will love it.

      • Likely 1366 x 768 pixel resolution.

  • +6

I wish more laptops are at least 1080p, it's amazing that while phones have their resolution improved so fast… laptops have pretty much stayed with 1366x768, unless you go quite high-end (usually at least like $900+).

    • +3

      That's because a 5" 1080p screen is a lot cheaper than a 15" 1080p screen.

      • +1

Plus every plonker and his/her dog owns a 1080p smartie these days, I'm guessing that leads to cheaper components.

  • Hi Rep, is there any offer on i7 3rd or 4th gen i am looking for a speed for multiple use, but not for games.

  • Thanks Rep. It will be ideal for my son for the start of high school. Ordered one.

    That looks like it..detailed specs.

Unsure if its that great a deal…looking around JBHIFI seems like plenty of options in that price range very similar.

its impossible to find info on this exact model…battery life…gaming performance etc.

  • How does this compare with an i7 3740qm? I had the laptop for 3 years. Has the i5 caught up to the older i7?

Would it be better to buy 3 of the JB HIFI Celeron machines to run work stuff, where I run 3 VM? I would effectively get 3 monitors this way.

    • +2

      i5-3337U - dual core
      i7 3740qm - quad core

both are in the same generation and therefore yours is much higher end than this laptop. Looking at Geekbench the i7 is 30% faster in single core performance and 120% faster in multi core performance

The performance gap is also because of two factors
the "U" in the processor model name means 'ultra low voltage' so the processor is not made for fast performance — it trades horsepower with lower clock speed and power efficiency

The "QM" denotes "quad / mobile" and does what it says on the tin… it's a quad core model. These will guzzle battery life and run pretty hot.

      • Spot on, could not have said it better myself :-)

This toshiba with more ram and bigger HDD is $449.07 delivered with their current 12℅ off code.

How does the CPU and VGA compare?

    • +1

That's a refurb by the looks of things.

Very similar'ish specs though… but the Acer has the bonus of being touchscreen.

    • How does the CPU and VGA compare?

      CPU: i5-3337U > A8-5545M
VGA: 720M > 8510G (but they're both very weak VGA cards anyway)

but yeah it has 8GB ram (~$40 if you buy another stick of 4GB) and 1TB (extra 500GB should be roughly ~$30 in terms of value which is better spent on an SSD anyway)

this refurbished Toshiba C50T-A005 is another and cheaper alternative to consider:

      • i5-4200M > i5-3337U
      • 1GB 710M
      • 4GB
      • 500GB
      • touchscreen
      • $425.92 + $6.95 = $432.87 delivered with 12DDJUNE 12% off coupon

ps nothing wrong with refurbished as it comes with 1 year warranty

  • +1

Bought this computer for my brother for his birthday last year (572PG and all, checked - purchased from DSE). Beware, as he has had 2 total hard drive failures in that time, with Acer being very reluctant to replace either, and in both instances returning the unit with some pretty gnarly chassis damage.

Otherwise great PC for the money!

    • I own one of these laptops. I added 256GB SSD and a 8GB stick (total 12GB). Works well I have been able to play most games on high settings. The only game I struggled with was Shadow of Mordor which was on medium. The only issue has been with the touch pad, is really buggy until you update the factory driver, only then is it ok.

  • Rep : how much to upgrade to 8 GB Ram?

  • -2

why am i not able to order and pick it up from my local store, and what is the meaning of Handling fee(Delivery Order Only) in addition to shipping cost this add up to $523.62. You might as well sell it as normal price. As once you factor all of theses additional cost not much of a bargain.

  • +1

    Hey rep,

Any chance of getting a deal on a FHD laptop, 8GB ram, 15/17" ?

    Cheers.

  • Is it good for gaming?

    • probably not the games that you'd want to play. It's a 2 generations old ultrabook.

  • +1

irrelevant to the post, but since you work at MSY, are you able to tell us why all the staff are so rude? i've been to a few stores, all the same. But your prices are low… so….

    • +1

never had issues with rude staff.

      • +2

That's because they are all trying to crack onto you!

        • that's true, but I've never met a female MSY worker :(

There were a few girls working at 9289 though. :)

  • did anyone buy this laptop today like me and get this screen when turning it on? such a shitty experience!

    • Maybe the hard drive has some corrupted sectors. I highly recommend running some HDD diagnostics on that one.

Try a trial version of HD Sentinel and see what it reports.

or perhaps there was a Secure Boot and UEFI setting in the Bios that needed to be changed since Windows 8 isn't liking it.

      • Can't even get to start menu. I know it could probably be fixed but that's not what I expect from a brand new laptop.

    • That's an expired Windows preview version message.

      • good to know. I ended up returning it the following Monday and exchanging it for a new one. no issues so far

  • Wait why is this expired.. the weekend doesn't end for another 23 hours and 11 minutes.
And the stores probably don't close for another 14 hours at least.

    • probably OP is near a store that isn't open on sun?

    • not sure but still available online so called Auburn branch but their phone system is so bad that calls terminated after 30 second when no one pick up the call.

  • Looks like these are on special for $499 once more.
