Correct me if i am wrong , the only difference between this one and the previos r400 is the hspda 3g option ?

  • correct only difference from the spec sheet i can see is the 3g

    • awesome , also are the r400 elegible for the free windows 7 upgrade ?

  • i dont think so, i would say that is why they are clearing them out, ready for new win 7 stock

    • thanks think i will call and ask, nice work finding the bargain :)

  • 1300 13 9999

    • Might be best to call the branches on the weekend ;) called my local and they say you will be able to get win7 upgrade for free

  • 800 bucks seems a pretty good price for an ultra portable tablet, but considering this machine is a model of three years age (from Jan/2007), with 80G IDE HD, using 945 chipset and not a Centrino2, I'll think it twice.

  • I just picked one up at Ryde.
:D nice.. been thinking about getting it when it first released but no way with the 4K price tag.. and so tempted last time it was around $1400~ but for $800!?!?! it's a bargain, yes it's not the most powerful notebook but if you need a tabletpc like me than it's an awesome deal. I asked about windows 7 upgrade twice and was told both time, on the phone and in person that it is free upgrade to windows 7. Just gotta call up toshiba for it apparently.

I bought m200 which was previous model for 2.8k 4 years ago. :S

try that and let us know if it works i still havent bought one, trying to stop myself

Edit sorry try this link for australia
      http://www.teckwah-windows7.upgrade-sw.com/

      • Thanks!! says eligible for free upgrade.. although it's $29.95 shipping and handling fee. No dead/bright pixels, runs really quite.. wish the bottom bezel was thinner, it's rather huge… otherwise not bad for $800.. not bad at all..

        • Whats the windwos rating or exp index ? ie the score it gives the machine in vista

glad your happy cause i want one, but good to check some things first as per mily said it has some down sides but looks good for the price though

          • @Mikinoz: funny! I was just checking a review with the exp index! 3.1!
            http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=3592&review…
but I am sure that will change once I get me windows 7.. turn everything off and uninstall all but few apps.

Unless you really need a tabletpc, I wouldn't buy it.. it sure has its cool factor! built quality is miles ahead of my m200 and m300.. :S (I am not a toshiba fan.. nor do I like their notebooks but I seem to own 3 of them.. I swear I was going to either get a dell or an macbook this time..)
But then again I was looking at getting the asus 8.9" for $500~600 so.. compared to that this is an absolute steal, and it's equipped with wacom digitiser with 512 sensitivity. Perfect for my needs. :)

r400 must have been the biggest flop.. as they were 4k-ish on release but have come crashing down in price.. I am not complaining though..

how does the performance of this compare to a netbook (eg. asus 1000H or samsung n110) and the toshiba a600?

i notice the HD is also only 4200rpm…will this slow the machine considerably (compared to standard 5400rpm in laptops and 7200rpm in PCs)?

    • something i have been wondering aswell, also if upping it to 4gb and getting a decent 5400rpm will make it good with windows 7, and if that in itself makes it not as good as getting a current asus or dell with windows 7 already as sata will give the option of ssd

The major buying factor for me would be the 3g/hspda option ie if i am able to say get the sim out of my optus usb stick and insert it in the notebook and use the internet connection that way

must admit i have only come across 2 people who owned this notebook as it was pretty un popular with the high price tag ie up to 4k but the owners have been happy, except of course when they see the current price

i am using a u2500 processor notebook right now, that i bought of ebay 2 weeks ago and its a pretty good processor although i only paid 250.00(Dell 420)
