Optus Prepaid $30 Unlimited Calls and SMS, 1.5GB Data, Monthly Data Rollover up to 10GB

1310

For those presently jaded by the "targeted" $45 per month "go mobile" from Telstra, if you have a compatible handset this prepaid may suit.
I like the look of the $30 plan with unlimited calls/sms and 1.5 gigabytes of data, with an option for 500MB extra for $5.
The best part is you can roll over unused data allowance, up to 10GB.
The deal starts on 5 July.

Dam carriers are becoming more competitive everyday….

    • +3

One day they'll offer unlimited data plan.

      • +2

        Amen! #netflixonmobile

      • +3

Optus did up until a year or so ago with their '$2 days 3G ready' offer. I'm still on that now, and am still downloading upwards of 50-100GB a month. I see that these SIMs are selling for heaps on Gumtree.

        • Can you access to their 4G network?

edit: never mind, they do offer "Optus $2 Days 4G Ready" which you can access to their 4G network (500Mb / day)

      • +1

In america its already there! Aussie telcos are bunch of looters

        • +2

In America they slow down your speed to like dial up speeds after you exceed your limit. American plans are expensive too.

      • +1

You mean, like the ones already exist in many other western countries?

      • Porn on phone, can't wait.

    • Sure if you forget about the past few years where they seem to have by my (admittedly probably jaded and incorrect) estimation halved the amount of data they give per dollar.

Like you know, at one point not so long ago this many banana skins was getting me 5GB on Telstra 3G.

Edit: … *********it wasn't Pennytel doing 7GB Optus for $25? Maybe I recall that wrong …

      • +1

All three telcos made infrastructure investments costing in the billions - gotta pay for that somehow, so mobile rates went up for a couple of years. Good to see them coming down again, though we seem to have lost the super cheap MVNO plans - no more $11/m SIMs.

  • +1

    kb billing. nice.

  • Can you continuously roll over data month after month accumulating until 10GB reached or only 1 month at a time like Vodafone?

    • All I know is what they say here: http://ausdroid.net/2015/07/03/optus-launches-data-rollover-…
      i.e.:
Tim Cowan, Director of Mobile Marketing, Optus, said
Customers hate losing their data and that’s why Optus is launching data rollover, so customers can have what they paid for and use that data whenever they want.

Also, note you need to activate before 12 July (for some reason)

      • +1

Can't find where it says you need to activate before 12/7.

    • +4

How would you get to 10GB if you only had 2 months at 1.5GB?

      • Good point :)

      • +3

You mean unused data can only be rollover for a max of 2 months? Where did you see that?

      • If you recharge $60, then you can have 12Gb for 2 months.

  • +1

close, but still not good enough for my like. currently on virgin $20/m for 1.3gb data and $200 credit (not sure about this, i dont talk much on phone). im after something under $25 with significantly more data.

    • Could look at a cheap Aldi plan with data add on.

    • I'm in the same boat as you. Low use phone and sms with a decent data plan.

AMAYSIM PAYG for Calls/SMS combined with a AmaySIM 365day data plan. Rates: 12c/SMS and 12c/min. I don't think you can find a cheaper plan.

Good tools for keeping track of usage as well.

    • +2

Maybe try Yatango, I just recently switched to it and no problems so far. Uses optus as a carrier and adjustable plans. I'm currently on the $15 for 2gb of credit and PAYG for calls and text as I don't use them much. Credit lasts for 3 months? I think and if you refer someone you both get $20 credit.
kb data and 19cents per min no flagfall for calls

    • i think i stay with virgin for the time being. yatongo seems ok, for $22 i can get 2 gb +100 mins.

    • Where is this plan? I can't seem to find it on the Virgin website. I'm currently with TPG on their grandfathered Super Value plan and 1 gb just isn't enough. I don't call or text much though.

      • @AlisonP - The plan he's referring to (incidentally the same one I'm on) was during their promotional period whereby they offered an extra GB of data for the $30 (or $20 BYO) plan. 200/300mb + 1GB = 1.2 / 1.3. It's decent value but I too find that 1GB of data isn't enough. I'm still hanging around for something that's around 25-30 dollars a month for like 3/4GB and above.

  • I dont see unlimited calls on the $30 option.
    Only 350 minutes!

    Edit:
    Gotcha, plans not released yet!
Sounds good, might switch over from Telechoice :)

  • +1

In the right location with new 700MHz LTE handsets, optus 4G offers pretty good performance.
e.g. (from whirlpool) http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/a/1086572383 (although typical speed will be 20-40 mbps I imagine)

  • +1

    If this was $25 - and 1.5gb - i'd sign up IMMEDIATELY

  • +2

not the best deal compare to the old woolsworth-optus plan.. i am currently paying 26$ for 500$ credit and 5gb of data plan for 45days !

    • +3

Perhaps, but this is suitable for those after unlimited calls and sms, and not some $worth of calls.

    • +1

It was a good deal but only on 3G. And also that plan is gone now, people can't even get it anymore so it can't really be compared to this.
At the moment, this new optus prepaid is pretty good. especially with the data roll-over.

    • I am also in the same plan but pays $30 per month. How do you get recharge for $26?

      • i upload my credit through optus website

    • +4

As I commented above telcos seem to have halved the unit of data per dollar over the past couple of years and still managed to have people exclaiming about the competition and the amazing value it's creating ;)

They are exceptional manipulators I think.

    • I'm still rocking this plan! Effectively $10pm. Will only switch when I really want 4G

  • Thnx

  • I cant wait to see the day when Australian carriers start to offer unlimited monthly data for under $200 which i will be more than happy to cancel my ADSL2+ and subscribe with them.

  • -5

My $50/m optus plan comes with 16GB data.

    • How did you get $50/m for 16gb? Cheers

  • +1

Can't wait till the day they have unlimited data like in America, what's up with these telcos they still haven't got unlimited for mobile data cause it congest their network?

    • +3

Bluntly they would rather sell you as little as possible for as much as possible.

    • Yeah, can't wait until they offer unlimited data plan. In Japan, they offer unlimited data for years.

      • Japan has a much larger population in a much smaller area

  • -2

Yes…20$pm for those with optus bundle plan!!!! (10 off pm when combining )

    • +1

      Prepaid service - can't bundle

  • so how do we get this deal? rock up to optus shop, buy a prepaid sim and then recharge under this plan? or do I need to call the optus hotline?

  • +1

Or switch on VodaAU $32 \ *700 mins* given Telstra Optus won't likely budge.

8/28 days is a start^ free weekend, ime, best in class provisioning data. '4G ∞'

  • Nowhere as good as the Optus $4 per GB with unlimited calls/SMS.

  • Pretty decent deal, excellent for those looking to switch to an unlimited calls and text service.

  • +1

Wonder if they're gonna sweeten their post pay plans too.

  • -1

The monthly rollover adds very little value for me, I already "budget" my data use to as much as I have.

Can anyone make a case for it adding any value at all though? If you don't use all your data all you are doing is paying the same amount (unless you wish to go without a voice/sms service for some period I'm assuming) and having some amount of data left.

If you do recharge the data that has rolled over what you have now is something to "lose" (even though you may not use it) when you evaluate another plan. It wouldn't surprise me if this was the reason this was implemented.

    • +2

Not sure about your situation, but it allows you to work/study when the net is out as you can tether is to your laptop. On 1.5gb no roll over, I tend not to because I'm concerned it might blow the data usage.

I generally use 1gb to 1.2gb or so. a roll over of 300mb twice would give me some comfort to and guts to tether when my net is out.

      P.S TPG…here. goes out once every 2 - 3 months for several hours. :(

  • +3

I just want kogan back. 300 bucks a year, unlimited phone calls and 6g data per month. nowhere near there yet.

  • Bring on Monday! Surely they will have some good deal on postpaid too. Currently on $50 + $30 for husband, less $10 discount. So 2 sims with unlimited sms/calls and 9gb of Internet @70 a month. Would be even better if they knocked off some more bucks, even though I think for a new plan is decent data allowance for what we pay.

  • Couple of (probably dumb) questions:

    1) Can I buy a SIM from a store, put it in my mobile and sign up for this plan? After signing up I need to activate it online on Optus website and it will give me the option to port-in my number from my existing carrier. Is that correct?

    2) How many days will it take for the number port-in to be complete? While the number is ported in, can I use my phone with the 'temporary' mobile number that the SIM comes with?

    • Answers

      1. Some of these offers Optus asked customers to sign up by online. So wait until they advertise or you can change plan anytime if you sign up now.

      2. 24 hours to 5 business days depends upon your current carrier. My postpaid plan taken 24 hours to port to Optus from Virgin. You have to call them to make it quick. When I called them they made it with in 15 minutes. When you sign up if you mark as port required then they won't issue any new number but they will issue sim card. Until that you can use your current number. This is what happened to me 2 days before.

  • I have flaky reception with tpg. Would optus be the same given tpg uses the optus network?

    • Maybe it's ur phone

      • Nexus 5

    • Yes

  • do i get the same recharge options post the offer is withdrawn or will I have to move to a new plan (may be a expensive one?)

  • Ok, so whats best for lowcalls medium data (1gb.. heck, maybe 500mb if kb billing)? I'm stuck on prepaid amaysim and living without data as >$20/mo is a sick joke for how little I do.

  • may be optus has realised that most of their customers can barely use up their data quota by the end of the month and start using this roll-over trick, which will mean nothing with the current state of their network.

    • +2

Nothing wrong with the optus network. I get 4G plus speeds and coverage is great around my area. Little difference with Telstra. Inner Sydney.

  • Can someone please tell me why the prepaid $30 optus plan has better value than the postpaid $30 Optus sim only plan?

    • At a guess, because it is harder to retain a prepaid customer. A bank of stored data credit keeps you with them longer.
As a postpaid customer, they have probably worked out you are less likely to port away than a prepaid customer.

    • The advantages in postpaid can only be $10 off if you have broadband and data sharing. We have a $50 and $30 sims in my family, we also get $10 off and share 9gb. So basically all unlimited and 4.5gb each, plus 300 international minutes on one sim @$35 each. If we went prepaid we would need two $45, no discount and less data.

  • Does anyone know if you can set up your mobile as a wifi hotspot with this plan? I am with the original "TurboCap" from the early 2000's and you cant do it with that one

    • +1

From Optus webpage its a bit unclear. It sounds like they generally do except for 3G iPhones:

it would be best to clarify this with Optus on 1800 780 219 to be certain

from https://optus.intelliresponse.com/index.jsp search for tethering prepaid:
      "
      WHICH PLANS OFFER TETHERING?

      POSTPAID MOBILE PHONE PLANS
All of our current smartphone Postpaid plans include tethering as a feature, regardless of the type of handset you're using.

      PREPAID MOBILE PHONE PLANS
Most of our Prepaid plans include tethering as a feature. Prepaid iPhone users need to ensure they've had 4G enabled on their plan to use Personal Hotspot.
      "

      • I have an iphone 5s and optus claim that since I am on such an old plan it doesn't have the ability to be used as a tethering hotspot, but if I want to change plans it would magically work.

I'll give them a ring tomorrow and find out if I can do it with this new plan. If not, im going to stay with the plan they have been trying to get me off for the past 7 years or so.

Hope that this deal will shake up the market. Makes Vodafone and Telstra's $30 pre-paid call inclusions look rather pitiful.

  • is it really "unlimited calls"? what about the 'fair use' policy? LOL

  • Thanks op got this and $29 lumia530 from Kmart. Cheers

    • Hoping the $30 starter packs for $5 from the previous everyday rewards deal will work with this new plan…they should, bu the look of them.

      • +1

        @ pete2
        Yeah they work :)

  • hi guys, it's a 30days plan, how to recharge automatically every 30days? thanks

    • Optus say you can auto-recharge on your credit card

      • thanks, so it will be recharging every 30 days automatically?

        • +1

Yes, if you choose that option.
          From their web page FAQ:
          http://www.optus.com.au/shop/mobile/prepaid/recharge-options…

Q WHEN WILL THE FIRST AUTORECHARGE BE APPLIED?

A When you set up AutoRecharge, you’ll be asked to provide how often you’d like your recharges to be applied. The first recharge happens immediately as part of the set up process. The next recharge (the first AutoRecharge) will occur depending on the frequency you’ve chosen. For example if you’ve chosen an AutoRecharge every 30 days, your next recharge will be applied 30 days from when you’ve set up your AutoRecharge.

        • @pete2: Does recharging every 30 days qualify you for the days rollover or does it need to be every 29 days?

        • @Love a bargain: Thats a really good question, which I dont know the answer for. I imagine their auto recharge would support their offer of data rollover, however hopefully someone will contact Optus and shed some light on this. You certainly dont want to lose your bank of data on day 30, but this would need to be confirmed with Optus.

        • @pete2: thanks heaps

  • can we recharge thru woolworth?

  • 35 dollar? can i use it to paid premium sms services?

  • Can I keep my existing number and port over or do I need to get a new number?

    • Can't see why you can't port your own number across

  • the unlimited calls? does it include calls to telstra, vodaphone sims?

  • I just called Optus and they told me I can't change from my 24 month contract plan (I have 3 months left) to a Sim-Only plan. You can only change to another 24 months contract plan with a phone. Ah well…

    • +1

Just gotta wait till your contact is up.

  • I've been using postpaid plans. It might sound silly but what's the difference between prepaid and postpaid regarding this particular deal? Can they send you bill monthly and just direct debit for prepaid plan?
